The tail, rear brake and tag light became intermittent.upon dis-assembly, it is discovered that the plastic reflector that holds the two light bulbs that perform these functions is heat-cracked to such an extent that the tag light bulb, (halogen), is no longer contacting it's power source and is melted into the reflector so that it cannot be removed.the plastic that holds the tail/brake light bulb, (incandescent), is cracked and causing intermittent function of that bulb.when researching this problem with other owners of this make and model, it is discovered that it is pervasive on this model of motorcycle, does not occur for a number of years after manufacture, has caused extensive frustration and endangerment of riders, and cannot be solved simply.replacing the plastic reflector would solve the problem, but bmw doesn't list or sell the part.the owner is forced to redesign the reflector in metal to accept an led or lower wattage bulb, or buy an entire rear lighting assembly for over $400.led's can be a problem because they can interfere with the electronics on the abs brake system causing it to become disabled.lower wattage is a problem because the purpose of illumination is to be seen.$400 for a light bulb socket is a problem, especially when the problem will simply re-occur somewhere down the road and cause a rear-end collision.i don't see the upside of bmw's under-handed attempt to save euro's by using cheap parts at the risk of their constituent's lives.
