The bike as developed a low speed low rpm hesitation and stalling, it is a real danger when it suddenly clears and the bike will accelerate hard, making rear wheel traction a concern. The bike runs well and higher rpm and speeds with good ,normal fuel consumption around 40 mpg, in town low speed stumbling mpg is from a low of 27 to 32 mpg. The local dealer has the bike for the 4th week and seem to think all is well," they all seem to do it ". Was one statement made on the phone. I feel they are waiting for the warranty to expire and suddenly have a fix.

In early sept my 2008 bmw k1200gt began to experience a high idle. It would stay at 1800 to 2000 rpm's when the throttle was released. In turns or heavy traffic this can create a hazard. The bike had approx. 10,160 miles at the time. I notified the dealer who promptly replaced the airbox, idle control valve and reset the software for the bike. The seemed to run fine for approx. 300 miles. The high idle returned only now it would surge to about 3,000 rpm's when stopped or slowing and then eventually drop to normal idle. Again this created a safety hazard at times. The bike is currently in the shop awaiting repairs. This is being reported to create a record of a possible safety issue with this vehicle. There are a number of k1200gt's with this problem.
6/21/2008upon start up, idle jumps to 2000-3000rpm before returning to normal idle of 1000rpm.dealer; re-adjust idle actuator. Engine idle actuator not adjusting idle properly but still in spec.(malfunctioning but still in spec. How do you figure??)7/26/08idle is erratic at start-up. (revs to 2000+ rpm then back down to 1000). Same complaint as last service. (even more erratic at high altitudes).dealer; idle valve plunger sticking in the air box, r&r intake muffler/air intake box. 10/11/08idle actuator or idle valve plunger erratic again and affecting idle and low-end throttle response. Dealer; no faults found11/8/08 rode into a small town (elevation 7000ft) somewhere in the range of 1500-2000 rpm and noticed a lack of throttle response. The throttle suddenly drops a few hundred rpm, stumbles, spits and sputters to the point it died in the middle of the street. Other times it has accelerated back up to 2000+ rpm on it's own instead of dieing.11/22/08picked up the bike from the dealer again and still have the same throttle issue. Dealer; i was told this is a minor issue and bmw doesn't have a fix.
At aprox. 600 miles after taking delivery of this new vehicle there occurred to be a problem with the idle. Example: when letting off the accelerator vehicle will not slow down. This can be a problem when approaching a curve, intersection, or any instance that requires a slowdown or stop. Vehicle returned to dealer for repair and some parts were replaced, specifically the airbox. Vehicle ran fine for approx. 600 miles when problem returned. Sometimes the idle will drop off to zero and the engine dies, stops, etc. Engine will restart after cooldown but runs rough. It is my understanding, after talking to other owners and dealers, that this is a known problem with this particular model.i have also learned that the manufacturer ( bmw ) is on its third redesign of the above mentioned airbox. As with any motor vehicle, when you let off the gas you expect the vehicle to slow down and when this does not occur ( slow down ) it is cause for concern and therefore unsafe ! ! !today while cautiously driving vehicle to dealer for further diagnosis of this problem another safety related dilemma occurred, see odi number 10245019. Vehicle is now totally out of service.this vehicle is totally unsafe ! ! ! ! !
Motorcycle was delivered with a defective airbox.as vehicle temperature and ambient temperature got hotter, the throttle would stick.the hotter it got, the worse it stuck.this would result in loss of engine braking and unintended acceleration.on the third day i rode it the throttle stuck at 3,000 rpm in heavy traffic and i almost rear-ended the car in front of me as a result.i rode the rest of the way home with the engine stuck at 3,000 rpm.bmw has a service bulletin #13 003 07(056) that deals with this - they knew the bike was likely to be defective before they delivered it.when i called to complain they immediately took the bike in and replaced the airbox and engine operating software per the bulletin.the bike was unsafe to ride as delivered and they knew it.
Cracks developed in the plastic fuel pump assembly on my motorcycle.i started smelling raw fuel in my garage.i pulled the panel and then the tank seeking the source of the fuel smell and found raw fuel was spraying in a mist through cracks that formed in the base of the fuel pump assembly. Specifically, the cracks formed where the female side of the quick disconnect screws into the pump assembly.a fine fuel mist is present when the key is turned on and the fuel lines are pressurized.in my view, this is a dangerous condition, given that the assembly sits directly over the hot engine.
Fuel level sensor failure. Ran out of fuel while driving at highway speeds on interstate 90 westbound near mitchell, sd. Fuel gauge showed 1/8 tank of fuel. No warning issued by motorcycle to rider. Bike just suddenly slowed in traffic. This is 3rd time for this failure.
Fuel level sensor failure. Ran out of fuel while driving at highway speeds on interstate 90 eastbound in ny milepost 460.5. Fuel gauge showed 1/4 tank of fuel. No warning issued by motorcycle to rider. Bike just suddenly slowed in traffic. This is 4th time for this failure (had it repaired by bmw on aug 5, 2015)
7/19/11 single vehicle accident, 5-10 mph, when gas cap came open and fuel dumped all over victim and motorcycle. Rider 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 40% of his body, ultimately resulted in amputation of both legs.previous to the accident, driver took the motorcycle to dealership multiple times to report gas cap would come open while driving bike down the road.dealership never fixed gas cap.
Final drive failure 2008 bmw k1200lt motorcycle. Bearing bad in final drive.this model/year not listed as a choice so i put k1200gt as the closest one.found large oil leak from drive while parked overnight, dealer stated drive bearing is shot needs new bearing and seals.first time, almost new bike, 7600 miles.2008 model.dealer is repairing drive under warranty.if it happened while riding could have caused crash.
The final drive failed causing oil to be thrown on the rear tire without warning nearly causing a crash.i am a long time motorcycle rider and bmw owner.i inspected my motorcycle before my ride that morning.i left on a one hundred mile ride.about 70 miles into the ride in a left hand corner the rear tire slid without warning.i was able to keep the bike upright.i stopped and inspected the machine.i found that the final drive (differential) was leaking oil heavily.this oil has spread to the rear tire surface.the issue here is that bmw knows about this problem and has not recalled the motorcycle.they of course refuse to do anything financially about this known issue.the main issue with me is that i would never put my wife on the back of it again.if she had been riding with me i would have certainly crashed.i am a member of bmwmoa, i have read complaint after complaint about bmw final drive failures.it is a safety issue.i hope that you will look into this.i would sue the factory but i am sure no attorney would represent me because i wasn't hurt.i wonder how many bmw riders have been killed because this failure was overlooked or not noticed as a cause of loss of control.the repair will cost around one thousand dollars.but again the money isn't the issue with me.my complaint is that the vehicle is defective.the design causes oil to be thrown on the rear tire.this could be a fatal error.i have to believe people have been killed by this failure.feel free to contact me if you would like any more information.updated 5/7/2015
Driving my bmw k1200lt to pa. Only 6,500 miles on odometer. I stopped in w. Va and noticed oil on the rear tire, indicating a final drive seal failure.
Bmw motorcycles 2008 k1200gt and 2000 r110rt. Consumer writes in regards to power train final drive failure. *tgwthe consumer stated gear oil leaked onto the rear tire.
Rear drive bearings and wheel side seal failed gear lube on rear brake pads and rear brakes quit working.tire tread contaminated with lube making greatly reduced traction.nearly lost control of vehicle on stopping due to change in the vehicle dynamics and loss of rear wheel traction as the failure did not cause any indication that this had happened until stopping.the rear drive was serviced by the dealer within the last 4 months march 2015 at 11,400 miles or so.i have never had a failure on such a major safety related component such as this on any vehicle i have owned at such a relatively low total vehicle mileage level.
Abs failed with no warnings, total loss of braking power.i beleive this was a significant failiure.happend on my brothers bike as well 2 months later.less then 30k miles and just past 3 years... Happened during ride on freeway on first use of brake.i had to pay to replace. Bmw claimed it is not significant and not a problem.
Driving on freeway, when had car pull in front of me. He did not see me. Using brakes had almost no breaking power, and locking rear wheel.abs had failed.after researching found that this is a very common problem with bmw. Bikes loose abs all the time, but abs is not considered a safety option.on a motorcycle abs can be the difference between life and death.
The abs brake warning light came on. I took the motorcycle to my authorized bmw dealer in long beach, ca. They said that the abs brake module had failed; however they refused to repair or replace the faulty unit. I sent it out to an independent repair facility and they repaired the unit at my cost. I then had the unit reinstalled by my bmw dealer at my cost.
My bike placed in service for routine recall as suggested by bmw america. The recall will be initiated on the 8th 2012.as indicated by recall, brake lines were replaced & suspension part was replaced as well. August 8th 2012on august 9th 2012 i rode bike to work 12 miles, after stopping for gas and continuing to head home; while driving on the highway at a speed of 62 mph a brake failure red light appeared on the dash.i called bmw spoke with [xxx] of issue since brake repairs were just done on bike day before. [xxx] stated that he didn't know why this happened. He also stated how do we know you didn't do it?? i returned to the dealership and spoke to the manager, [xxx]?.. He stated that he believed my brake abs pump was failing as indicated in the diagnosis. I questioned: how did this happen? how can you expect me to assume repairs since you just repaired recalls on brake issues yesterday? [xxx] stated that these things happen. 8,000 miles without a scratch was back in service after a repair recall and none of any these issues were caused by they just worked on my brakes the day before. After spending over 30 minutes with bob and manager they felt that they would at least contact bmw and get them to pay for the repairs. [xxx] stated the repairs were about $ 2200.00. I learned august 17, 2012 that bmw would not stand behind the proper repairs of my bike . After further research i also learned that this is a known safety issue for bmw k bikes and the recall was issued to correct this problem. I now have a motorcycle that is unsafe to ride do to "brake failures" and bmw service as well as their manufacturer are willing to make good on the repairs. I am requesting that bmw of the dealership bob's bmw correct the issue on the bike as prior to their recall or repairs. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Rear brake seized and would not release.situation:rolling up to a stoplight, i applied both front and rear brakes.as the vehicle approached very low speeds, i released the brakes and engaged the clutch to creep forward, closer to stopped traffic.at that point the vehicle stopped abruptly (not typical).when i tried to engage first gear to ride forward, the rear brake was still seized, even though my foot was on the ground and not touching the brake pedal.there was squealing noise from the rear brakes.after struggling to get underway, i applied the brake pedal a few times, and it finally seemed to release after riding for a short distance (less than 1 mile).
Rear brake locked up while driving, even though the brakes had not been applied for several miles prior to this happening. Brake lock-up caused caliper to overheat which in turn melted the rear brake hose resulting in total loss of brake fluid in the rear brakes. Fortunately this occurred while driving on a rural country 2 lane highway at low speeds and i was able to pull off the road immediately. Had this happened while on an interstate at high speeds, in traffic, i would probably not be here to make this report. A very dangerous situation to be in ! ! ! dealer will replace all damaged brake components under warranty but is at a loss as to what caused the malfunction to occur. I am now afraid to drive vehicle, as this could occur again and with life threatening results. Vehicle is new, less than one month since purchased. 69 total miles on vehicle at time of purchase.
Bmw motorcycle k1200gt,2008, red emergency warning light notifying the rider of unsafe brake pads comes on in error, causing an emergency stop, bmw denies any knowledge of prob. But dealers, some have dealt repeatedly with the problem, acknowledge, dealer refused to treat as a serious problem advising, "could not duplicate" it's a safety issue.
Bmw k1200gt (motorcycle) - surging idle - potential hazard - bike will be running fine and then, for no apparent reason, begin idling around 3000 rpm.failure occurrence is very inconsistent.air box has been replaced but did not resolve issue.after some research, this seems to be a very common failure. 1000 miles on a new bike and four trips to the dealer without the problem being resolved.
