My 2014 certified pre-own bmw 535d caught on fire while i was driving home from work last week, fortunately a driver next to me alerted me that my car was on fire. I pulled over within 30 seconds, got out and within another 30 seconds my entire car was engulfed in flames.
The driver's door lock cannot be opened manually due a known problem with the electrical door actuator failure. This is a design flaw in a critical component where the driver should be able to open the door in case of an electrical failure or in an emergency when its critical that the driver is able to manually open the door even if there is an electrical failure, battery dies, the car is involved in an accident or the car falls into a body of water - in any of these cases the driver should be able to unlock and open the door manually. The failure of this door actuator also prevents the door to be unlocked and opened manually. I think this is a design flaw and a potential death trap. This has happened many times and there are multiple bmw owners that have complained about this on the internet and to bmw, without any recourse.
On 12/03/2016, my 2014 bmw 535d abruptly stalled in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. It had spontaneously locked itself into 'park' without warning. The engine would not start, and there was no way to overcome the electronic lock on the transmission and put the transmission into 'neutral' to push the car out of traffic. It had to be towed. Fortunately this happened on a slow moving road. On a fast highway, this event would have posed a mortal hazard. I am concerned about the safety of a vehicle that becomes dysfunctional in that way. One of the passing drivers stopped and informed me that exactly the same happened with his bmw 535d and that bmw of north america is aware of this problem. It seems to me that this situation should be a serious concern of the nhtsa.
2014 bmw 535. Consumer stated that bmw failed to perform nhtsa's safety recall 18v-755 in a timely manner. *ldthe consumer stated the vehicle stalled while being driven. The manufacturer was contacted prior to the failure and advised the vehicle was safe to drive.

Message comes on the console indicating drivetrain fault and about 2 seconds laterlooses all engine power while driving on a highway. Was able to pull over to the shoulder as the traffic was very limited on the road. Diagnosis by bmw repair shop is that the high pressure fuel pump has failed.
The contact owns a 2014 bmw 535d. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and was unable to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump failed. The vehicle was later taken to herrin-gear bmw of jackson (located at 1685 high st, jackson, ms 39202, (601) 354-2269) where it was diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer also informed the contact that the timing chain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired for the timing chain failure due to the repair fees. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided case number: 1-4011097971. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

I have 2014 535d and the fill reservoir light came on after christmas . I dipped drive home. On thirsday january 3 it did it again. I had sent bmw an email that check engine light was on which has been happening since o bought the car. Intake manifold, nox, oxygen had all been replaced. Received the recall notice on friday jam 4,2019. We already knew it had this recall issues well now i have to replace a $625 hose to diagnose the car issue that's been recalled. I believe the recall caused the issue but now i have to pay for part and labor before they can work on it and this part is several weeks wait. I believe the egr leak can melt the hose and leave stranded . Once the egr fails it's doing extensive damage very quicklyand leaving even more repairs bmw is notcovering. This issue has been worked on for months now and the fix doesn't last but couple months at best.
The contact owns a 2014 bmw 535d. The contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle rode roughly. Occasionally, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v755000 (engine and engine cooling). Century bmw (2934 laurens rd, greenville, sc 29607, (864) 214-3449) diagnosed that the egr cooler failed, but the part was not available for the repair. The contact was provided a loaner vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
I owned a 2014 535d with about 54,000 miles.bmw has issued egr recall due to risk of fire since oct 2018.as of march 2019, there is no remedy or part replacement.what is the point of recall especially the vehicle is used to carry children.nthsa needs to do something about this.
Don't have an accurate answer as to what component failed, but all indicators point to the egr/agr flap valve failing. Smoke was coming out of the front end of the intake manifold, after careful visual inspection i noticed a hole was made from the internal fire melting the plastic intake. This could've been a lot worse and the car could have burned. Thank god i reacted quickly and pulled into a non crowded area away from the road and turned the car off.
The contact owns a 2014 bmw 535d. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v755000 (engine and engine cooling). The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. Crevier bmw (1500 auto mall dr, santa ana, ca 92705, (657) 213-3493) was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
I received several safety recall notices from bmw over the last 2 years, every time i call bmw, i am told "the necessaryparts are not available". I have an engine check light on my dashboard most likely caused by egr cooler malfunction. Really frustrated about not being able to get this issue resolved by bmw.
2014 bmw 535d. Consumer writes in regards to safety recall 18v-755. *ldthe consumer stated the part necessary to repair the vehicle was unavailable. At the end of january, the consumer noticed an abnormal noise and reduction of power. The vehicle stalled in high speed traffic. The consumer waited 30 minutes before being rescued from the traffic by police. The dealer charged the consumer for the repair. The manufacturer was notified but, did not offer any assistance.

The fuel delivery system in my car failed at 70mph on a crowded highway on 8/24/2017. The dashboard engine light went on. The car coasted to a stop in a dangerous location. There was no way for the car to be put into neutral so that it could be pushed to a safe location.someone is going to get killed in one of these cars if bmw isn't made to fix the problem
The car's engineer light came on, so it was sent to the dealership for repair.the indicated repair item was a control sensor.i picked up the car after repair in the morning of 11/7.the car was driving fine.around lunch time the same day, just as i was getting on the highway, the engine started to sputter violently.luckily, i was still on the right lane.i quickly turned towards the shoulder before the car died completely.all of this happened within less than a minute.the car can not be put to neutral to be moved.the emergency light only came on for around 10 minutes before it was totally shut off.the shoulder was very narrow, so my car was still partially on the right lane.many cars came from behind at >60mph speed.i feel that i was in a very dangerous situation until high patrol came to secure the lane, which was about 40 minutes later.if this happened after i switched to the middle lane, without even emergency light to warn the cars behind, i think i would be dead by now.the car is in the dealership.they are saying it is the high pressure fuel pump failure.
The contact owns a 2014 bmw 535d. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning and could not be moved off the road. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home and then to the dealer (pacific bmw, 800 s brand blvd, glendale, ca 91204, (818) 246-5600). The dealer stated that the entire fuel system had to be replaced due to a faulty high pressure fuel pump, which released metal fragments through the system. The total repair cost would be between $14,000 and $16,000. The manufacturer sent a notice to the contact stating that the faulty fuel pump was a known failure and that a special item specific warranty would be issued for seven years or 100,000 miles. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and stated that he no longer wanted the vehicle. A case manager was assigned, but had not yet called the contact. The failure mileage was 78,869.

I hit a piece of truck tire debris on i-495n in marlboro ma at night and i was unable to stop and inspect for damage due to heavy traffic. All seemed ok. 15 minutes later in chelmsford ma, the car gave "drivetrain malfunction, reduced power, drive gently" message and continued to lose power and slow down.i pulled over safely to the breakdown lane and then the engine stopped and could not be restarted again. Tire debris from earlier ruptured part of the fuel system and caused the car to dump diesel fuel on the highway and the engine eventually stopped due to running out of fuel.given that the car has all-wheel drive (awd), a flatbed truck is required for towing. No other tow method is allowed.this requires being able to put the transmission in neutral (n) while the car is disabled and release the parking brake in order to move the vehicle.the parking brake (electric control) was able to be released but there is no easy way and no documentation readily available to override the electronic shift interlock for the transmission.the car is unable to be pushed, towed, or rolled without being able to get the car into neutral while the car is disabled.placing the transmission into neutral normally requires starting the engine first which was not possible due to no fuel and there is no manual override or documented procedure available to override the interlock so that the car can be moved while disabled.the flatbed truck operator had to get creative and skid the car onto the flatbed in order to pick it up.the disturbing thing about this incident is that the electronic shift control for the transmission has no override for the interlock for moving the vehicle when disabled.older cars had a mechanical link between the shift lever and transmission so a manual override was easy to do. New cars now have all electronic controls instead of a mechanical linkage.
When accelerating from a stop (e.g., from a stop sign, red light, or merging onto a highway), the car accelerates normally for a second or so and then acts as if the fuel supply was cut off (or as if it runs only on one cylinder) and slows down to almost a standstill. Several seconds thereafter it picks up speed again and then the message 'drive moderately. Maximum drivetrain output not available. Consult service center.' appears. This happened initially twice in may 2017 (once to me, another time to my wife). The car was for 10 days at the dealership for repair and regional specialists stopped by and helped the local dealership locating the problem. They could reproduce the 'stalling' and returned the car to us with the hope that they indeed had found the source of the problem (electronic governor of automatic transmission). The same malfunction (sudden stalling after initial normal acceleration) happened again in october to my wife. Additionally, a new problem occurred (three times): when driving off from a stop, the drive mode 'd' switched spontaneously to 'n', resulting obviously in a lack of propulsion. Instead of 'stalling' i could use the words 'sudden deceleration to almost a standstill' 1-2 seconds after an initially normal pick-up.these drivetrain malfunctions created scary life-threatening situations to me and my wife: any 'stalling' after initially pulling onto a busy highway could easily lead to the driver being hit from the side (t-boning) or, if the car was moving in the direction of the traffic, to rear-ending. The fact that the same (and additional) malfunctions re-occurred after an unusually lengthy repair attempt represents in our view a huge safety issue.
The contact owns a 2014 bmw 535d. The contact stated while driving 25 mph, driveshaft detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to bmw of milwaukee north (5990 n. Green bay ave, glendale, wi 53209, (414) 290-4200) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the u-joint, transmission, drive shaft, transfer case, propeller shaft, underbody plate and shield needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 20v185000 (power train) however, the vin was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.
I was driving on a freeway in ca, the engine stalled suddenly, and transmission went into to park whilei was in traffic.there is no way to override the electronic transmission from in the car; only way to get it into neutral is from underneath the vehicle (not accessible unless on a lift and not possible on a busy freeway).this is a shockingly bad design and extremely dangerous.i was a "dead duck" in traffic.finally found a flatbed who could place the rear wheels on a dolly and put the car up on a flatbed (this was the 4th towing company...the first three declined and/or didn't have the capability to move it).ultimately bmw replaced the entire diesel fuel system in the car, a known issue i understand, but i am still haunted by the dangerous predicament that i found myself in on a sunday evening 75 miles from home.i am a car buff and knew to look for the transmission override.manufacturers typically place it in and around the shifter.i was shocked to discover that bmw didn't have one inside the car.this left me as a real sitting duck.it was dangerous for me; it was dangerous for everyone else on the road that evening with me.

I was driving on the highway at around 65-70mph when all of a sudden my sunroof exploded into the vehicle all over me.i swerved as a result of the shock but thankfully was able to regain control of the vehicle before hitting anyone.i was thankfully in the vehicle alone and suffered cuts to my face and scalp.there was no evidence of any cracks on the sunroof and there was no foreign body impact noted.glass flew into the vehicle as well as gouging the roof and and trunk of the vehicle with glass shards.
