Takata recall.bmw is not doing enough to rectify the situation.i received a notice in march & 5 months later bmw dealers still do not have the parts to repair the airbags.how is it that this is acceptable?

I was driving and bumped up against a sidewalk curve and my airbags deployed as well as my car shut off. It will not start another more and the hood underneath was on fire. (smoke was present).

Electrical wiring insulation/sheathing within the headlight unit/housing is showing signs of and or outright deterioration which in turn exposes bare wires within the headlight housing.at this point, the daytime running lamps have been the only effected lights but the wires for the headlights are also noticeably troubled.the issue is not speed, movement or area dependent.for further reference, i will provide a link to an owner's forum detailing other's dilemmas due to this exact issue:http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=798640i look forward to a response.

2008 bmw 535i has an engine malfunction and a problem with the fuel valves.*njthe consumer stated the engine had very little power. Two months later, the consumer had to take the vehicle back to the dealer due to the same problem previously. The dealer informed the consumer again it was the fuel valves. The consumer experienced the problem for a third time, in he lost virtually all power in the engine. So far, the dealer has been unable to determine the cause of the failure.

Just bought a used 2008 528i (e60) w/94k miles, in otherwise perfect condition.went to change the angel eyes from drab yellow to lux led's.noticed bare wires on both sides of the bulb connectors, on both sides of the car.tried to use electrical tape, just made more bare wire.the more i touched the wires, the more insulation flaked off, almost like a powder.i've never seen anything like it.can't possibly be safe. Definitely a fire hazard.neighbor brought over a bottle of liquid tape, and i re-coated all the bare wire i could see, making sure each wire was separated so a short would not occur.that is a good temporary fix.will have to stay on top of this problem, since most, if not all, of the headlight wiring is made with bad, quickly degrading wire insulation.a real disappointment in otherwise good german quality and engineering.i guess the source procurer at the factory saved bmw some big bucks on that wire!!this is definitely a nhtsa safety recall issue.tort lawyers should have a field day on this one.photos of this problem are available at:http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?2132684-headlight-wire-jackets-just-flake-off

Our 2007 bmw 530xi developed a steering wheel lock malfunction warning.a red steering wheel with a padlock appears on the dash screen with a warning on the computer.the steering wheel locks and unlocks perfectly every time.the car is drivable.the dealer says the steering lock module must be replaced for $600.i found that this is a rampant problem on bmws and that bmw corporation is aware of the problem.there should be a recall for this problem.

Vehicle is 2008 bmw 535xi wagon. Blocked sunroof drains meant that water drained into the vehicle, gathering in the trunk where the electronics sit. Car had multiple engine failures and warnings of transmission failure, electrical failure, sunroof error and tpm failure. Cause per bmw was blockage of rear sunroof drain. This is a common fault caused by poor design ofthe sunroof drains (too narrow and prone to blocking). A recall on the sedan 5 series moves the electronics to a higher position in the vehicle to prevent the electronics damage but bmw state there is no similar move possible for the wagon., also it impossible to diagnose the problem before it occurs and bmw has no suggested service steps t p[revent occurrence. When this happens its very dangerous and v expensive to remediate. Bmw occasionally covers a goodwill repair but won't cover under warranty. Advice from bmw is not park the vehicle under trees! dealer indicates when this re-occurs bmw will not cover the cost again.

( i am the original owner this vehicle)while replacing a burnt out headlight, i noticed that the insulation in the sealed headlight was missing. When i checked the opposite side, i found the same thing, the insulation was broken and missing. Being that this is a sealed headlight housing, i am unable to remove and repair the problem. Bmw parts stated that the wiring harness is not sold for those lights. One has to purchase a completely new headlight assembly at a average cost of $700.00+.

All 6 fuel injectors failed.car lost power while driving on 3 separate occasions.

On or about may 2013 i was traveling at 60mph on the freeway when suddenly i heard a loud bang sound and my vehicle came to an automatic stop. Scared as vehicle behind me screeched and turn away avoiding me. I remained in the middle of the road for approximately 30 minutes before the vehicle restarted and i traveled fearfully to complete my assignment.same day on my return home vehicle stopped about 3 times but i drove straight to dealership. Without inspecting my vehicle i was told my alternator and battery was gone. I was quoted very high amount but something told me a bad alternator and battery would not start a vehicle so i offered to take my vehicle home. My vehicle stayed home for about 4 months without use only warm ups reverse and park. I did extensive research to avoid the frivolous amount the dealers quoted and found that the integrated module (ivm) was bad. I got it for $144 and replaced it and problem was fixed after 4 months. Until april 2014 i drove the out to work and barely two miles away from home i stopped at a traffic light and when released the vehicle sounded a huge banged sound this with transmission malfunction light active brake lights and several other lights on dash board. Once again i survived being ran over in the early morning rush. Took vehicle to bmw dealership. Told gear shifter was bad and replaced for $915 and thereafter i received a call the transmission was out. I was advised cost will be $15000 then later that it cannot be fixed and advice to sale it as is to some guy. I owe $17900 on vehicle.called bmw north america to complain was told new transmission cost $9200 and i'm asked to pay $7400 best deal. There's no reason for transmission on 2008 to go out. Since dealers took my car they gave me a rental for 4 days and took it from me but kept my vehicle for additional 2 weeks and are still holding it calling to accept deal.

1. Rough riding - loss of power on highway2. Dozens of times over the last few months. Car has been in shop for two months out of last 12 for the same issue.3. Bmw keeps trying different things but no final fixes as yet.

Malfunction of left headlight. Dealer inspection revealed"headlight wires leading to bulb socket have corrosion on them and casing around the wires is coming off".there was a recent vehicle safety recall for this model car for similar issues with rear lamp bulbcarrier: recall campaign no. 13v-407potentially serious safety issue with malfunction of headlights leading to dangerous driving conditions or crash can occur especially at night or in bad/inclement weather.

Our 2008 bmw 528i has an electrical problem in which the vehicle does not have the capability of charging the battery if the vehicle is driven short distances or multiple stops. This causes the battery to run down and the vehicle to become inoperative. The vehicle will stop and not start.after four (4) trips to the dealer (trucked twice) the dealer has determined that it is an operator problem and the vehicle should be plugged into and electrical battery charger when not in use.additionally, they indicated the vehicle should be taken daily for drives of more than 20 miles to hopefully charge the battery.the issue has us in fear of the vehicle stalling in traffic and creating a serious safety issue.

The grounding wire in the connector to the tail light bulb holder melted and melted parts of the connector. This resulted in no signal, brake and running rear lights. A recall has been called for bmw e46 3 series for this exact problem. The recall should be expanded to cover the 5 series as well.

I was driving and bumped up against a sidewalk curve and my airbags deployed as well as my car shut off. It will not start another more and the hood underneath was on fire. (smoke was present).

Ground wire for passenger side tail light burned up.ground wire, both sides of electrical connector, and tail light bulb holder all burned up.passenger side brake light, tail light, turn signal and back up light do not function at all.improperly rated fuse did not blow before circuit burned up and melted.this circuit is not designed correctly.this is a safety hazard to myself and anyone driving behind me.car model is a 2008 528xi.

Have had 3 separate instances in the past 9 months where my car stalled or sputtered with loss of power , and once i had no steering or braking ability.dangerous situation in freeway traffic.

Vehicle is 2008 528i sedan. The tire monitor pressure indicator was displayed. I took the car to a bmw dealership to check the tire pressure. They said the tire pressure was ok on all 4 tires. However, it continued to display the tmp indicator. Then for the next couple of days, when the vehicle was started, various alert indicators would display briefly and the date and time were not set. I took the car back to the dealership and they determined fluid (referred to by bmw as 'an outside influence') leaked from inside the trunk of vehicle into the rdc (communication) module, which is located under the trunk. The service advisor stated the submerged fluid shorted out the module and melted the harness. The rdc module and the harness were replaced. The trunk was not wet so i did not realize anything had leaked nor was i aware there were critical electrical components located directly under the trunk, which were not properly protected. To place the rdc module in an area where liquids can penetrate (i.e. Open drunk while raining, groceries spilling'), is extremely poor vehicle design. Since the problem was a result of 'an outside influence' it was not covered under warranty and it cost almost $1000 to fix.

I was driving and bumped up against a sidewalk curve and my airbags deployed as well as my car shut off. It will not start another more and the hood underneath was on fire. (smoke was present).

Water pump failure with less than 50k miles, repair cost $1200, ridiculous! see nhtsa id number: 10472497, this gentleman had the same complaint and just like him, my car was out of warranty by 1.5 months.

I took my car to the dealership for regular maintenance (oil change etc). They found right side engine mount bolt broken which can cause additional damage to the car. This was reported as a safety concern. I am the sole driver and have never had any issues or unusual road conditions. I searched on internet and i found a lot of complaints with 2008 bmws (5 series as well as 3 series). Definitely should be asafety recall !!!

We bought a certified pre-owned 2008 535xi in november 2010.it had 36,000 miles.at 59,000 miles while driving approximately 75 mph on a majory highway in long island after sitting in traffic for an hour and a half on a 70 degree day, the car just shut down.it would barely steer and would not accelerate.we were lucky that the brakes worked and were able to glide over to the shoulder.computer said engine overheated and it was the red indicator which is the worst.we got towed to a dealership and are told its the water pump.we did have the car serviced at a different dealership 4 days before this happened and told them about a clicking noise from the engine but they didn't hear it so nothing was done.the incident was very scary and makes me not want to drive the car anymore.

2008 bmw 535i.engine start-up takes longer than normal.the engine idles rough and hesitant to accelerate and check engine light comes on.bmw claims to have fixed the problem under a recall, but the problem came back again 3 days later.

The contact owns a 2008 bmw 535xi. While driving approximately 65 mph, the accelerator pedal was engaged and the engine began to sputter with an extensive reduction in power. The contact continued with caution and the vehicle was taken to a dealer where they replaced the fuel pressure sensor, spark plugs and performed an oil change. The failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer three times in which there were no resolutions. The high pressure pump was replaced on a different occasion. In addition, when encountering a bump in the road and down-shifting from third to second gear, an abnormal clicking noise would occur. Recently, the engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was in the process of being diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.updated 01/28/11 updated 02/07/11

2008 bmw 535i-engine power failure, engine shuts down and loss of power steering and maneuvering ability.

Engine malfunction warning.

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 bmw 535.the contact was driving 60 mph when the vehicle overheated and stalled. The vehicle was towedto the dealer for diagnostic testing where the dealer advised the contact that the electrical water pump and thermostat malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. There were no recalls for the failure of the vehicle.the failure mileage was 59,500. Kmj

Engine failed without warning at highway speed.

Car loses power2008 bmw.535i*we had just gotten it out of the shop(new plugs and new brakes ,changed the oil air filter full service) and the next day we had gone out for supper when the car would barrly run it was like it had 2 cyclinders. Had the bmw place pick up and they said it was low fuel pump and they had to order. When they got that in it did not fix it so the put another set of plugs and new coils and high pressure fuel pump in also. They ended up covering the whole bill. But it seems not to run like it use to. Not as much power. I would like to find more info on problem and how they extended warranty.* tr

Engine malfunction light comes on and there is loss of power. This is the second episode. After the first episode i had taken it to bmw dealer, they had it inspected it and said it was a software glitch and fixed it. I happened today again and had taken my car to bmw dealer and they say it is fuel pump problem and gave a thursday appointment to look into the problem and told me it was safe to drive. Currently i am facing atleast a 40% power reduction.

Reduced power from engine. Pressed accelerator and engine did not respond with regular power. Reduced power in traffic at 40mph. Pulled over shut off engine and restarted with full return of power. One repeat of problem 3 months later with similar results. Dealer replaced fuel injection auxiliary parts. Too soon to know if problem will recur.

2008 bmw 535i - car has had 3 fuel pumps, 3 separate visits for plugs / injectors, last visit for replaced fuel pump created large fuel leak in car which resulted in tow to dealer. Engine malfunction light problem. Hpfp, repeated engine program.

My check engine light, reduced power came on, brought car into shop. They "repaired" car for 10 minutes.. Car would not go over 30 mph when it ran. It shook violently. Car stopped and had to be flat bedded. Danger! bmw bought me out of my lease..these cars should not be sold!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2008 535 bmw fuel pump went out for the second time. This time my wife was driving. She was making a left hand turn. The car did not have power. Thank god the on coming traffic stoped.bmw is not taking this seriously. This is very dangerous situation

Engine malfunction light comes on and is combined with a slight loss of power.have had bmw dealer troubleshoot but no resolution after 7 attempts.

Three wks ago my 08 528i was making a rattling sound in the engine, tin-can sounding. Took the car for service & they replaced my lifters and related parts. They said that the lifters are "known" for going bad on the 5 series and it's typically due to seasonal changes. When my husband brought the car home to me i was very upset because the noise was still there, not as loud as before. I called bmw and made another appointment, citing that this problem had not been resolved and it needed to be looked at again. The appointment with a loaner could not be scheduled for another 10 days, so we waited. During those 10 days the vehicle started to take longer to turnover at start up. I would also feel the engine lightly shuttering as i drove at speeds averaging 35-50 miles per hour. Monday 05/23/11 was my requested appointment; however because my 15 mo. Old baby was ill we had to cancel. Thank goodness we did because my car would not have made it the 20 miles of freeway to the dealership. Today, 05/25/11, i made a left out of my neighborhood and as i accelerated approx. 50 yards, my engine bucked (felt like the bottom fell out), i lost speed dramatically. Suddenly, steering became nearly impossible and i was forced to "turn" into a small shopping center. However, i lost ability to steer upon entering the parking lot. My car would respond to nothing but the brakes (thank god those atleast worked). I looked down at my gear shift to attempt to reverse away from the curb and maneuver into a parking space, though my car was thrown into neutral & would not respond to anything but "park". I attempted to startup again but engine wouldn't turn over. It was dead. Within moments my abs, check eng, and battery lights illuminated & corresponding msgs came onto my communication screen. Car was towed. Awaiting dealership response in the am. After seeing prior complaints, i see someone needs to be fired. The us government needs to step in before people die! thank god my baby wasn't with me!

1. Vehicle loses power 2. Engine malfunction light comes one.11/2008, 2/2009 & 4/20103. Gas fuel pump replaced 3 times in 18 months.

2008 bmw 528i. Consumer states unexplained engine shut down *tgwthe navigation screen flashed overheating; reduce speed; and pull over, then the engine shut down when the third message was received. The shut down was traced to a faulty electronic water pump.

I purchased a certified, pre-owned 2008 bmw 535xi with approx. 22,000 miles on 10/23/10.subsequent to my purchase, i discovered the high-pressure fuel pump in the vehicle had earlier failed and been replaced.on 10/28/10, just 5 days after purchasing - i was driving on a surface street when the car began violently shaking and rocking, the engine lost substantial power and nearly stalled, and the engine malfunction indicator lit. I took the vehicle in for service on 10/28/10 and the vehicle was returned 10/30/10.3 of 4 fuel injectors were replaced along with all sparkplugs.at high speeds, this type of engine malfunction would pose an extreme safety risk in my opinion.i have contacted bmw usa and the dealership where i purchased the vehicle and i have not been satisfied with the response to-date.

1. Rough riding - loss of power on highway2. Dozens of times over the last few months. Car has been in shop for two months out of last 12 for the same issue.3. Bmw keeps trying different things but no final fixes as yet.

2008 bmw 535i "engine malfunction - reduced power!" message on 06/07/10.it has around 30k miles.i took it to the dealer, and they diagnosed the problem as a wastegate malfunction.i picked it up from the dealer on 06/08/10 and drove it to florida on 06/09/10.after being in florida for 4 days, the problem returned.the i-drive system froze and eventually powered off and came right back on.the car sat overnight, and i made it back to atlanta the next day without any issues (no error on the display).took it to the dealer on monday, 06/14 and this time a low pressure sensor was diagnosed as the problem.picked it up from the dealer yesterday (06/16) and drove home without incident.drove to work today (06/17), no problem.on the way home today, the problem resurfaced.the car will be going back to the dealer tomorrow.this will be the 3rd time in less than 2 weeks.these cars appear to be defective.this is really frustrating!

1) starting/driving car2) engine malfunction, loss of power, rear end collision possible when driving.

Engine malfunction -- reduced power and then the car either reduces power or dies completely.also, cold engine rough start and rough idle.to date, fuel injectors were replaced, where upon it was recommended that i no longer buy sam's club 93 octane gas but a "name brand."i did -- problem re-occurred on july 24, 2010, out of the blue without warning, this time with my 6 year old in the car on a highway.i was able to get over to the right shoulder of the road without incident, and turn off the engine, wait a few moments and restart.the bmw dealer has had my car since late july, and have now replaced one of the turbos in the engine. I am hoping nobody has to die before bmw is asked to recall n54 engine bmw's or buy back the ones they have sold.the dealership has recommended that i write a complaint to bmw north america.i will.there is also a petition going -- http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?fixpump which i think will give you some idea about the scope of the problem.i do not have the old parts.thank you. '

The car showed engine malfunction sign without warning in middle of busy street. All power, steering, everything went dead without warning. I couldn't move the whatsoever.i was lucky enough to make a right turn before this happened and avoid potential accidents.

2008 bmw 535xi- engine failures and reduced power at high speeds- very dangerous.

Car in for service for the third time.the first two times, high-pressure fuel pump was replaced.this time, 2 fuel injectors and plugs will be replaced.symptoms have been the same each time - engine light comes on, low power message is displayed and car runs extremely rough.one incident required the vehicle to be towed to the shop as it stalled while driving and would not re-start.based on information on this site and in the bmw forums, i am concerned that the car is not being adequately repaired, but just patched.i do not feel comfortable driving a car that might stall or lose significant power while driving in highway conditions.

Purchased new 535i 8/22/08. With less than 400 mile, received engine malfunction-power reduced warning while driving at interstate speed. Limped to dealer, who had car for 4.5 days. 1st question: what type of fuel? shell. Response: may have to much ethanol. Service found an engine mis-fire code; replaced injector and swapped coils to validate inj. Replacement. 2nd occurrence at 3200 miles, again at hi-way speeds. Mis-fire code again found by dealer service. Injectors were "swapped"; i'm not sure to what end. The car was also "reprogrammed".i get the impression that service people do not know what is truly causing the problem. Or else that they are trying not to commit. Now have approx. 4100 miles w/o any recurrence.apparently this is an issue that is not just with the 5 series, but the 3 series also, both types with the n54 turbo charged 3 liter engine. First fixes involved the high pressure fuel pump, now they are appear to be swapping/replacing injectors and reprogramming the ecu. It is also a common point of discussion in on-line bmw forums when searched under engine malfunction.

We purchased a 2008 bmw 528xi as a demo. It was said to be certified. It ticked from the day we purchased it. Bmw said all it needed was an engine bleed-down. This was done 4 times. The vehicle still ticked and we took it to our trusted bmw dealership and wa stold it needs a new cylinder-head due to a manufacturer defect. The car only has 3,000 miles on it. This is unacceptable. The car has been in the shop since march 2nd, not even begun to start the work. I feel the car should be replaced as it is a lemon , and we desire a 2009 528xi with the same options.

Car check engine light came on, reduced power on dash, and sluggish.towed car to dealer, replaced spark plugs and high pressure fuel pump.check engine light came on again, took to dealer, needed pressure sensor. This has occurred 4 times now, dealer states this is ongoing problem with this engine, and have i would have to bring the vehicle in whenever this occurred, no loaner car available.i do not feel safe in the vehicle when this occurs.

Driving on the highway and the engine started to run rough. This is the second time this has occurred. The first time this happened was in july and brought it to dealer and could not find problem. Second time i had car towed and said it was faulty ignition coil. Replaced and seems ok now, but every so often it runs rough for a few moment.

I purchased a new bmw 535i on may 26, 2008 and on aug 8, 2008 while i was driving my car at 70 miles and hour the car started was shaking as if running on 3 cylinders.there was a message from the car stating engine malfunction reduced power!i waited 3 hours for a tow truck and after a few days i received a call from richmond bmw stating i needed a new high pressurefuel injection system.i said fine and then received a call the next day saying my car was ready.when i picked it up they didn't repair anything they said they were told by munich to just reset the light and claim atmospheric conditions!!on friday september 5th while trying to cross an intersection i was almost t-boned when my car again lost power.then on saturday september 6th the engine lost power again and same message popped up on the idrive screen.when i went back to the dealer i was told that the high pressure fuel injection was a "high profile" part in munich and therefore they were told to just reset the light to see if it happened again.needless to say i am outraged that bmw put my family in such danger so as to not have to replace high profile parts.please investigate what is going on with bmw this is very dangerous as it comes on without notice or warning power just is gone.i have asked bmw to refund my money but they have had my car since september 6th and i am getting nothing but the run around.

Was driving at highway speeds when car began to "sputter" causing rough ride.after another 5 miles, the engine warning light came on.i pulled over to the side of the road, stopped the car, then restarted it.the light disappeared, but reappeared after another mile of driving.contacted bmw who said the car was safe to drive.service center found that it was stored fault codes, which a previous service bulletin had advised.these fault codes were cleared and the car functioned properly.please note: this is for a 2009 bmw 535i.the choices available for 2009 bmw's do not include the 5 series.

2008 535i bmw repeated engine malfunction warning lights and numerous visits to the dealership, problem has been hpfp, software programming and injectors. Still not 100% resolved.

I have a 2008 bmw 535i with sport package and premium package. I have had an "engine malfunction/reducing horsepower" issue with this car 3 times since purchasing it in august 2008. The first incident occurred within 3 weeks of delivery and only 600 miles. The second incident happened about a month later with approx 1500 miles; and the third incident occurred on 11/3/08 with approximately 2200 miles. Bmw says each time that it's a misfire in one of the cylinders - but that they do not know how to fix it. So each time they reset the computer and send me away. This is a very dangerous situation. I drive on california freeways most of the time and when this engine malfunction occurs, the car starts "limping" and missing and i have to slow and pull to the side of busy, busy freeways that are very dangerous. Bimmerfest forum shows that there are lots of owners of the bmw 535i having this same problem - but bmw will not address the issue...... Each time the problem occurs, the bmw dealer asks me what kind of gas i'm using - and it's always been 91 octane. Then they ask me what brand - which is chevron, though i didn't realize the brand of gas would be a problem in modern day cars. This is a very dangerous situation to be occurring on the california freeway system, not to mention any freeway system given the speeds at which people drive and the danger of power loss in the middle of traffic and having to pull over on very small shoulders where other cars pass at high rates of speed within only a foot or two of my car when the engine malfunctions.

Car has sudden reduced power.check engine light and engine malfunction warning and "reduced power" warning sign come on.happened 4 times.bmw has "repaired" three time (reprogrammed car, replaced fuel injectors) to no avail.almost got in an accident this morning.when i tried to hit the gas, power dropped precipitously and i nearly got rear ended and hit in an intersection.

Rattle from engine compartment that dissipates once engine warms up.advised that the turbo chargers are failing and need to be replaced, only 66kmiles!estimated $3k in repair cost!

When engine start in the morning, car is shaking and reduce power warning light come up.every morning (went to service right away)dealer performed the service-replaced the fuel injectornext day-same happen again very badlycall dealer- bring the car again..waste my time and , feel very unsafe, because car is shaking.i am going to dealer again, but my question is ,what if same problems occurs several time, is there any law to protect the consumer against to bmw auto ?

Malfunction of left headlight. Dealer inspection revealed"headlight wires leading to bulb socket have corrosion on them and casing around the wires is coming off".there was a recent vehicle safety recall for this model car for similar issues with rear lamp bulbcarrier: recall campaign no. 13v-407potentially serious safety issue with malfunction of headlights leading to dangerous driving conditions or crash can occur especially at night or in bad/inclement weather.

The rear back-up lamp outage warning light came on my dashboard.i attempted to replace the bulb and saw that the wiring harness had been burnt around the brown wire.i searched online and saw that this has happened many times to other with the same yr make and model vehicle.i reported it to the deal who in turn referred me to contact bmw north america.i received an e-mail response from them saying that there is a recall in process and to wait 4-6 weeks.the problem, is that my tail light is not working.it is unfortunate this cannot be fixed immediately.i want to ensure that i am included in this recall.

2008 bmw 535i.engine start-up takes longer than normal.the engine idles rough and hesitant to accelerate and check engine light comes on.bmw claims to have fixed the problem under a recall, but the problem came back again 3 days later.

The car showed engine malfunction sign without warning in middle of busy street. All power, steering, everything went dead without warning. I couldn't move the whatsoever.i was lucky enough to make a right turn before this happened and avoid potential accidents.

I am reporting known failures and an "unofficial recall" (see web link to bms service report) of high pressure fuel pumps for 2008/2009 bmw cars with the 3 liter twin turbo engines. When these fuel pumps fail there is an immediate reduction of power and the car goes into "limp mode".bmw has recently extended the warranty on the fuel pumps to over 100k miles and 10 years, but i am concerned that there has not been a formal safety investigation by the us government (that i know of) or a formal recall by bmw since this is a potentially dangerous situation if cars suddenly slow at highway speeds.i am the owner of a 2008 bmw 535, it is now having problems starting in the morning and i am now concerned about when/if my fuel pump will fail - to the point i will no longer let my wife drive the car.www.bmwblog.com/2009/03/.../more-bmw-fuel-pump-news/http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181600.

I have a 2008 bmw 535 xi that has shown the reduced engine power/engine malfunction while on the highway twice.the car refused to accelerate and became very hard to maneuver. Thankfully, both times i was within a mile of the highway exit.i am hesitant to drive this car on long travels because a reduced engine power malfunction could endanger me and my family.bmw attempted to fix these problems first by replacing the high pressure fuel pump and then by replacing all of the fuel injectors.thus far the problem has been better but i am still leery of the car.

I am reporting two failures of the high-pressure fuel pump on a 2008 bmw 535i. The first occurred about one yr after delivery resulting in the car having to be returned to the dealer in limp mode. A year after the hpfp was replaced, the exact same failure occurred, and the pump was replaced for a second time. Imo, this represents a serious safety defect that bmw seems incapable of correcting.

We were driving on a 55 mph speed limit road. We were going up a slope, our car ( bmw 5 series) suddenly lost power and we were unable to drive the car beyond 30 mph. We had to pull to the side of the road. After contacting bmw, they informed us that they can not take it to the dealer as all the dealers are closed on sundays. So we drove the car slowly to the house ( 3 miles away). The car was towed to the dealer next day, were told that it is a high pressure fuel pump failure. The pump was replaced. Now we have the car back.bmw dealer mentioned that there is nothing we can do to prevent this from happening again, bmw is aware of the problem. Also mentioned that such a failure is an acceptable price for the car's great engine.my wife stopped driving the car because the engine may fail with the children with her in the car, it will be dangerous.every time i take the car to and from work i am worried that the engine may fail and truly can not trust the "great engine" that the dealer is so proud of.

While driving at highway speed, the car began to run very roughly.a warning light and warning message appeared, indicating that there was an engine problem.we pulled off the highway and into a parking lot.we stopped the engine, waited a few minutes and restarted the car.the car continued to run roughly but there was no warning light or message.we continued on to our destination (shopping).when we finished our shopping, i started the car and it continued to runroughly and the same warning light and message appeared.i wanted to drive the car to the dealer for service but when i pulled out of the parking space the car stalled.i restarted the car, drove it about 100 feet into another parking lot and had the car towed to the dealer. When i described the problem at the dealership, a service rep indicated that they thought it was the fuel pump.i heard that this has been a recurring problem.the dealer was not able to replace the pump without getting authorization from bmw because bmw had has so many fuel pump problems. A failure at highway speed that would cause the car to stall is a dangerous condition.

High pressure fuel pump went out on me on the highway. The car stopped real fast (not to a completion), could have caused a major accident. Thankfullynobody was behind me.

2008 bmw 535xi wagon.engine misfiring/losing power at highway speeds.dealer first reset computer..happened again.dealer replaced fuel pump..happened again.dealer replaced a cylinder injector....good so far.

Engine malfunction! reduced power was the message i received on my dash display.i took photos of the displayed message.car went from 65 mph down to 18 mph in a matter of seconds in the far left lane of the interstate highway.could have been killed.had to chug and lurch over three lanes of speeding traffic to get to the right shoulder of the road.i've already had the fuel pump replaced by bmw recall (a recall that i was never notified by bmw that the recall existed).apparently the fuel pump recall was not all of the problem as this same engine malfunction still occurs and the car still behaves the same as before the fuel pump recall.took the car to the dealer the very next day.he cleared a code in my onboard computer and did nothing to fix this problem.this problem with my bmw 535xi wagon is going to get someone in my family killed or seriously injured.i've read multiple complaints online from bloggers regarding this same problem.why is bmw not fixing the problem.at the time the fuel pump was replaced the dealer also reprogrammed my car's onboard computer and checked the fuel in the tank which, according to the dealer appeared to be fine.

I had my car in for routine service two weeks ago, and i mentioned that the car had been slow to start in the morning, and idled roughly. I was told that the car was 'reprogrammed" and that should take care of the issue.yesterday, while i was driving on the highway, the engine malfunction light came on, and the car lost acceleration, and i had to pull over on the right, through 3 lanes of rush hour traffic with a car that barely accelerated.i took the car to the dealer who said it was a bad sensor.this morning, my wife was driving the car with my 3 month old daughter and the engine malfunction light came on again.my wife tried to find a safe place to pull over, but the engine died at the light.she started the car again, and made it halfway into the intersection, and the car died again.she was very worried that she was going to get hit while stuck in the intersection.finally, after a few more cycles of starting the car, going a few feet, and the car dying, she was able to get the car into a parking lot.the car was taken to the dealer again, and now they are changing the high pressure fuel pump.

This car was purchase brand new on 12/12/2008. So far the fuel system has failed four time. Fuel pump twice and injectors twice. The car suddenly looses power due to this issues. My car has 36k miles. Having looked at news groups, a lot of people are having similar problems with this model.

I bought a brand new bmw 525i m sport which has done 1000 miles. It is just 6 weeks old and the high pressure pump (hpp) went bust. I just can't believe it. I buy a car with my hard earned money and this happens. Bmw should realize the impact it has on someone who expects a lot from his car since he is paying out of his nose.

Failure of the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp)in my 2008 bmw 535i.car lost power on the highway and caused a unsafe reduction of speed being the car by design will reduce power during the failure to save the engine.

I have a 2008 bmw 535i and received the dreaded "engine malfunction - reduced power" readout.the car would not develop more than 1,500 rpms.i took it to the local dealer and the service advisor stated immediately that it was a failed high pressure fuel pump, a rather common occurrence on this particular engine.the hpfp was replaced and the car has performed fine now for about six months, although the aforementioned readout did appear one more time, but i turned off the engine and restarted it immediately and everything was fine.

The n54 engine in the bmw is a hazard-i almost got killed when my car stalled on the road-bmw replaced the hp fuel pump 3x already and the car is less than 3 years old. These engines need to be replaced as there is a design flaw. Do people have to die to fix the problem?

While accelerating, the engine lost power and went into neutral.i was able to put it back into drive and the car very slowly regained momentum. A few minutes later, after the car had been turned off, i restarted it, put it into reverse to back out of a parking place, put it into drive to move forward, tried to accelerate, the car went into neutral again and would not move forward. I tried to put it into drive again but with no success. The car was dead andmessage flashed on "reduced engine power." fortunately i was in a parking lot and not on a highway. The car had to be towed to the dealer. The rmfd high-pressure pump had to be replaced. Bmw told me that this was a common problem and that the warranty on this part had been extended to 10 years, 120,000 miles. The old part is not available.

High pressure fuel pump keeps failing. Loss of power.

Purchased a 2008 bmw 535i in june 2008.vehicle has 30,000 miles on it.about six months after purchasing the vehicle, started to have the "engine malfunction/reduced power" light come on about every three months.two months ago, the same thing happened but the vehicle shut off at a stop light.had the vehicle towed and the fuel pump was replaced.had the vehicle back for approx two weeks and same thing happened again.had the vehicle towed.they replace some fuel injectors and spark plugs.had the vehicle back approx 3 weeks. Happened again.luckily still not on the freeway.drove the vehicle in to the dealer.they replaced more fuel injectors.had the vehicle back a week and the vehicle shut off on the freeway in traffic in los angeles going 65 mph and almost was in a major traffice accident.called the dealer today (saturday) and the service dept is not in on weekends.sales manager said "take the vehicle somewhere else" and "it won't affect us if someone is killed or injured and a lawsuit is filed". Afraid to drive the vehicle at this point.

Have had 3 separate instances in the past 9 months where my car stalled or sputtered with loss of power , and once i had no steering or braking ability.dangerous situation in freeway traffic.

On 5/20/10, my 2008 bmw 535xi suddenly lost power while driving on a single lane, resulting in a near rear-end collision. This happened once previously. Both times the car was towed and the dealer said they replaced the high pressure fuel pump. I complained about the latest incidence to bmw customer relations and services department, case # [xxx] ???. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2008 bmw 535i, with sport package with 3.0 ltr twin turbo engine.twice since purchasing new on 1 august 2008 the "engine malfunction-reduced power" warning appeared.in both cases warning light disappeared after driving between 25 and 40 miles as did the lack of power.car also occasionally starts with rough idle that disappears within less than a minute.car is in the shop now for the first time and initial reports show record of "misfire" event.issue could be very dangerous if it happens at a very inopportune time such as when acceleration is required to safely blend into traffic.needs definitive fix immediately!multiple complaints on line in many forums suggest that fix is not yet available from bmw.perhaps a redesigned high pressure fuel pump is required vice a replacement with one of the current design.

1. Rough riding - loss of power on highway2. Dozens of times over the last few months. Car has been in shop for two months out of last 12 for the same issue.3. Bmw keeps trying different things but no final fixes as yet.

Loss of power to car:1 turbocharger replacedloss of power to car:fuel pump replacedloss of power to car:3 fuel injectors and 3 spark plugs replaced.

Second high pressure fuel pump failure in less than 2 months ( first one replaced the 2nd week of december 2008 had another fail today on the way to work 1/14/2009). The high pressure fuel pump (hpfp from now on ) on the n54 motors from bmw has become a major issue spreading across 3 different lines ( 1,3,5 series) , some thing need to be done quickly, since buying low content ethanol fuel is nearly impossible. This was the excuse i was given, failures due to "high" ethanol content ( above 10%), drivers have no way of testing at the pump how high the content is except for the labels on the pump.

I want to voice my utmost dissatisfaction with my 535i(customer #113894) thus far based on following details. Service date: 5/22/08, mileage: 7592, vehicle experienced difficulty starting ignition.your service department replaced "high pressure fuel pump."service date: 1/17/09, mileage: 16495, vehicle displayed message, "engine malfunction, reduced speed" then engine stalled during driving in 5 freeway.your service department replaced "high pressure fuel pump." latest episode happened driving in 5 freeway with my two kids in back seat.car stalled in the middle of freeway and i've had close call with semi truck coming right behind me.i thought he was going to slam right into me!needless to this experience have given me a scare and fear for my kids' safety, which prompted me to file a complain with nhtsa.this 535i is my first bmw and it will probably be my last one.i've had acuras before this vehicle and had not had this type of life threatening vehicle malfunction.

2008 bmw 535itook my car into dealership due to car running rough.they couldn't find anything and sent me on my merry way.took my car in on monday, may 4 due to car running rough and ticking noise in engine...told them we were going on a 1,000 mile road trip the end of the week.they couldn't find anything but did replace some brake items.driving home at the end of our trip, on acceleration my car 'skipped' three times....a couple of minutes later i tested it and accelerated again (on fl turnpike) it 'skipped' hard again three times.got off at the next exit...at the light i got a 'engine malfunction' light and limped into the 7-11.put gas in car, called bmw concierge.we were close enough to home to have it towed to the dealership, get a driver to help us transfer all our luggage etc, and take us home.next day called dealership...they had car day and a half and said it was the fuel injector pump.i understand from tons of bmw owner blogs that this is very common occurrence...we were fortunate enough not to be going 65 miles an hour in front of a semi like many other family's have the misfortune of.i also understand that people have had to have this replace not one, two, or three times but continuous...four!this is absurd.where's bmw's integrity to do the right thing, address the situation, and not put their consumers in harms way.do we near a near death experience or our family's filing lawsuits once we're six feet in the grave for them to stand up and take care of these problems once and for all????

Added exxonmobil gas 9/2/2008.car dead by 9/7/2008, after driving approx. 50 miles.the fuel pump on this very new car has failed.the dealer claims the gas was bad (says alcohol level tested to 15%), while exxonmobil insists the fuel was fine at 10% alcohol, from the ethanol.i believe the real problem is that the 2008 bmw 535xi's can't handle even 10% ethanol, so the fuel pumps are failing.

The contact owns a 2008 bmw 535xi (na). While driving approximately 35 mph, the engine began smoking. The dealer made three attempts to diagnose the failure. The high pressure fuel pump was replaced but it cracked again. The vehicle was being repaired by the dealer. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was 30,100. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000.

The contact owns a 2008 bmw 528i 5 series. The contact stated while driving 25 mph and coming to a traffic light the brakes were applied and it automatically slowed down the vehicle. There was no warning light at the time of the failure. The vehicle continued to hesitate and accelerate, before the contact reached his destination. The dealer towed the vehicle to the dealership for inspection. The manufacturer was contacted and stated they wouldcontact the dealer regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 8,900. Updated 07/08/11the consumer was informed the fuel pump was clogged for the second time, which was causing the vehicle hesitate when the consumer was attempting to accelerate. Updated 10/12/11

The contact owns a 2008 bmw 535xi. The contact was drivingapproximately 65 mph. There was a sudden reduction in the engine power for 30 seconds. The engine shuttered and stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and the fuel pump was replaced. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on a separate occasion and the computerized system software was updated. The vehicle was being diagnosed by the dealer when the complaint was filed. The manufacturer has not addressed the fuel pump failure. The failure and current mileages were 37,500.

The contact owns a 2008 bmw 535i. The contact stated that the preowned vehicle was purchased in april 2010. The fuel pump failed.the owner was driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle cut off .the vehicle was restarted and taken to the dealer and the fuel pump was replaced. On june 2, 2010 the fuel pump failed again.the dealer replaced that fuel pump with a "new" pump.the dealer was delivering the vehicle back to the owner and the mechanic experience the same failure and returned the vehicle to the dealership. Bmw decided to take a fuel sample from the tank to determine if the fuel was the correct.they also advised they had found debris in the fuel system.bmw stated that that they would have to take the fuel tank off and clean it at the owners expense of about $3,000.00 as this was not covered under warranty.the vehicle is at the dealership at the time of the complaint waiting for repairs.the current and failure mileages were approximately 44,000.

My bmw 535xi started having fuel pump issues starting around 14 months after purchase, at 12,000 miles.the first time it went into safety mode, casing it to slow down to a snails pace. A new fuel pump was installed. The second time it would not start in a parking lot after turning it off for 10 minutes after a 20 minute drive.i called road side assist and they sent a technician who was able to get it started.he told me to take to the dealer but it should be fine to drive home.i left the lot and within 3 minutes it completely seized and lost all power while accelerating in the left lane.my 11 year old daughter and i were in the car.i am thankful we survived.i called the technician back and he convinced me to drive the car with him following to the dealer (approx 3 miles).when i complained to bmw they did not showed noconcern that we were put in harms way.in this instance the fuel temperature sensor/pressure sensor had a permanent failure.at 19,000 miles, the check engine light went on and i took it in to the service department.they suspected the fuel pump but could not replicate the check engine light, so corporate would not allow replacement.again at 20,370 mile, check engine plus "cold start not running on all cylinders" no action because not tripping corporate specifications. At, 21,092,high pressure pump permanent malfunction. Engine was flooded with fuel.five daysand 100 miles later, the engine flooded again.this time the fuel injector was leaking and all the spark plugs were soaked with gas and half were not working.at that time (nov. 2010) i asked bmw to take the car back.bmw agreed to a "trade assist" that will cost us an additional $33,000 to be get a new car.we do no understand how after almost killing us we cannot get out of this car without spending more money. We refuse to sell our problem to someone else.

2008 bmw 535i - car has had 3 fuel pumps, 3 separate visits for plugs / injectors, last visit for replaced fuel pump created large fuel leak in car which resulted in tow to dealer. Engine malfunction light problem. Hpfp, repeated engine program.

The vehicle has been hard starting; most recently the engine stopped completelyandsuddenly while driving at high speeds during morning traffic from new hampshire to boston, ma. Andhad to be towed. There waspossiblysome indication ofgasoline odor inside the vehicle. The bmw dealership reports numerous complaints about the fuel delivery system in its late model vehicles yet i have had no warnings or recall notice from the factory. Two attempts were made to correct this condition but the problem still exists . The wagon will visit the shop for a third time tomorrow attempting to correct the malfunction.

1. Vehicle loses power 2. Engine malfunction light comes one.11/2008, 2/2009 & 4/20103. Gas fuel pump replaced 3 times in 18 months.

All 6 fuel injectors failed.car lost power while driving on 3 separate occasions.

Gasoline is leaking from the fuel level sensor, which is accessed beneath the left rear passenger seat, due to a crack in the plastic housing. My independent mechanic who specializes in bmw repair, tells me this is a common problem with bmw and mercedes vehicles.

Trunk has unexpectadely opened when the release button was accidentally bumped wile driving down the road. Apparently there is no lock out on the button preventing trunk opening while vehicle is in gear and moving.

Bmw 535xi sport wagon 2008- .. Driving on highway, icon came on above speedometer - orange engine/half black and on dashboard below navi readout "engine malfunction-reduced power."from then on we had no thrust with gas pedal. Car went in for service and was supposedly repaired. This then happened four more times. Each time the car was in the shop and parts were thrown at it and each time we were told the issue was probably fixed but they really did not know what the problem was. The car was in the shop about 30 days since the original incident. Parts replaced werevacuum hose black, vacuum pump, pressure sensor, removed and reinstalled throttle, replaced all vaccuum hoses on 7/14/10, charged battery 7/27.

Transmission locked in parked and vehicle blocking movingtruck. Unable to tow auto because dealership was unable to provide assistance for unlocking mechanism. Necessary to contact bmw directly for assistance to unlock transmission and vehicle subsequent towed to dealership.

When engine is cold, car will not shift into reverse. It must be shifted into drive before it will shift into reverse. The first time this happened was in august-september 2007. The gear shift was replaced by the dealer.it happened again in october or november, 2008. The dealer downloaded all the software related to gear shifting and re-loaded it. The shift worked about one month until it happened again. As soon as i can get the car back to the dealer, they will have a third opportunity to fix the same problem.

My 2008 bmw 528i has now shifted into neutral, and then down-shifted, at high speed (60mph) without warning 4 times.three of these incidents occurred on the freeways of los angeles.this latest incident almost caused me to be hit by multiple cars as i coasted to a gorepoint at a freeway offramp.

On april 6, 2010 while pulling into a parking space at a shopping center, i applied the brakes on our bmw 528i and instead of stopping, the rear wheels started spinning, burning rubber on the pavement apx. 25 ft. Before i could stop by pressing the stop/start switch.fortunately no cars were parked in front of my parking space so i was able to stop without hitting anyone or other cars.when i got over the shock, i started the motor and it was still under full throttle.again, i pressed the stop switch.i was blocking traffic so again, i pressed the start switch and the motor was running normally.i backed up into my original space and called the bmw dealer who sent a tow-truck to deliver the car to their shop.bmw sent a field technician to inspect the car on 4/20/2010.i received an email stating no mechanical faults were identified by anyone and the car was ready to be picked upor a $25/day storage fee would be charged to us.i told them i would never take the moral or financial responsibility to drive the car again so they agreed to deliver it to our home.i sent an email to the dealer's mgr. And called him several times to ask for a repurchase of the car.we received no response.we were forced to hire an attorney who contacted the dealer and bmw regional office.the regional office reviewed the service record and refused to buy back the vehicle.the dealer said the decision by bmw regional office could not be changed.this left us with no alternative but to pay off the lease one year early and get the car out of our possession.a cashier's check for $5,694.87 was mailed to bmw on 8/23/2010 and the car was picked up on 8/30/2010 with 7,299 miles on it.bmw now has a car worth apx. $5,000 more than it will be at the end of the lease on september 5, 2011.it angers us that bmw would force us to keepa car that could put us & others in harm's way if we drove it, with a risk of unlimited liability!

Left side of the center dash trim continues to pop off.occurs every 4 months at $40 a repair.repaired 3 times; once under warranty and twice out of warranty.the trim pops out on its own, however the bmw dealership continues to state that excessive force is causing the problem.that is not the case.this is not a characteristic to expect on this class of vehicle. An owner should not expect to maintain the dash trim.

I was routinely emptying the trunk of my 2008 bmw 528i on august 1, 2009.i had to return to the cab and my right calf brushed against the exposed chrome tailpipes for no more than a second.the tailpipe was so hot, i got a second degree burn about 5 inches long.i went to the emergency room to have the wound dressed as it was blistering and i was concerned about infection.i have contacted bmw but they deny there is any danger.this injury could happen again to me or another party.see photos of injuries at bmwtailpipeburn.blogspot.com.

While traveling down the highway, i heard a loud noise - very loud - on the top of my car. It sounded like something fell or landed on the sunroof. I safely brought the car to a stop and then saw the huge hole in my sunroof!

The contact owns a 2008 bmw 535i. The contact stated that the driver side rear wheel was cracking. After purchasing a new tire he then noticed the cracked wheel in two different places. The dealer was contacted who declined to warrant the wheels. The manufacturer was contacted who also stated that they would not warrant the failure. The wheels were repaired at a cost of $484 by the contact. They offered no other assistance. The failure mileage was 27,000.

While driving down the road, the rim separated causing the tire to go flat. Had we been traveling at a high rate of speed the results could have been much worse. Bmw, as i have come to find out, declines any responsibility. Do your job!
