Hid lamps are a nuisance to other drivers.most specifically, they are quite sensitive to changes in vertical angle.when someone with hid lamps is following me on the freeway, the lamps often appear to be flashing, but in reality the vehicle is just pitching forward and back while driving over the road.the change in vertical viewing angle is enough to create a flashing effect that does not occur on standard headlamps.while i accept that these beams are far superior for the driver of that vehicle, the effect on other drivers is detrimental.is there a net gain or a net loss?i don't know, but neither does anyone else.thank you.

My front passenger seat occupant detection mat has cracks in it and does not function properly. My front airbag may not deploy in case of an accident. There has been a recall for that part for my make model and year but bmw north america claims that my vin number is not on the list even thought my make model and year is a part of the recall. There are also several other recalls for this particular car and again my vin is not on the list but i have the issues listed in the recall.

I own a 2004 bmw 530i. As i was pulling out of my drive-way, the passenger restraint malfunction light appeared and has not gone off. I took it to the dealer, before i became aware of the recall, and he told me it was because i placed my purse in the passenger seat. After searching his database, he told me it was not under warranty and therefore, i would have to pay the total cost to repair it. I would believe this if my vehicle wasn't a 2004 and i have been placing my purse in the passenger seat since i first purchased it brand new in 2004!

Deactivation of the passenger air bag and the illumination of both the air bag warning light and the passenger air bag light.

I had my 2004 bmw 525i in the dealer for the air bag seat mat recall in march '09 and had no problems before with the air bag system before this recall was performed. On december 23, 2009 the vehicle was parked at a local mall while we were doing some christmas shopping. Come out from shopping and start the vehicle to find the passenger air bag off light illuminated, air bag light illuminated on cluster, and then the i-drive stated fault in passenger side air bag system. I contacted the dealer as the previous repairs were only completed 9 months and 4k miles ago, vehicle has 62k on it now. Dealer states front crash sensors are bag and the bill will be $700. The repairs required the removal of the bumper, remove and replace air bag sensors, and programming. Under the recall nhtsa states bmw will extend the warranty for 10yrs unlimited mileage, think again because i had to pay this bill out of pocket. The extended recall only covers the seat mat i'm told. I contacted bmw customer service who was no help at all with this problem. I did some investigating myself and found many complaints about the front crash sensors failing in these vehicles and wondering when this will be looked into by nhtsa? if you have experienced this same problem email me.

Bmw recalled 2004 bmw 525i and others for the seat mat sensor. I had called them (2012-13) and they told me that my vehicle (based on vin) wasn't part of the recall. I informed them that my vehicle's mat sensor was also defective and should be replaced by them. They, bmw usa told me that mine was not defective. I still cant understand if the rest are defective, how come mine is considered not defective when its inoperative and same problem as thousands of other 2004 525i.

Bmw 5 2004:when the passenger seat is vacant awarning message (that the passenger airbag is off) is continuously displayed at eye level in the roof console. This is very distracting, especially when driving at night. The message should only come on when the passenger seat is occupied and the airbag is not functioning.

I own a 2004 545i and the airbag light came on.i have never had an accident or anything in this car.i took it to a local auto shop to have it diagnosed and it showed that the passenger airbag light was faulty.when i researched it on the internet, i found a recall for the passenger airbag sensor which specifically fit my 2004 545i bmw.when i called the bmw dealership they claimed that my car was not included in the recall and it would cost me about $1200.00 to fix!how can this be when the recall specifically fits the description of my vehicle? please help!!

The problem started about half a year ago when the passenger air bag on/off lamp illuminated for a couple of minutes and then went off, all with the passenger present in the car with the seat belt on.a few days ago the air bag warning lamp and the passenger air bag on/off lamp illuminated while there was no passenger in the car.the message indicated that the air bag may not work...these symptoms look very similar to the problem identified in one of the recalls for this car; however when i called bmw, they indicated that my car is not part of this recall and i will have to pay to fix this.

Bmw refused to fix the nhtsa action number: ea08001 and nhtsa campaign id number : 08v384000front passenger air bag warning.

Passenger side seat belt and airbag light stays on.

Dt: 2004 bmw 530 i.the consumer complained about several electrical problems, such as air bag warning light coming on/windows rolling down and then malfunctioning/trunk opening, and halo lights staying on.the onstar or sos systems wasnot working.took the vehicle to the dealership.the manufacturer considered this vehicle a lemon.the dealership and manufacturer were not complying with the lemon law.this process was to buy back the vehicle.they were takingtoo long to resolve this matter.

Restraint system fault.

In march passenger side seat belt air bag light turn on for no reason. I have searched on the internet and come to know that there was a recall on this issue from bmw for 2004 525i series. I call local dealership bmw of plano texas and provide them my vin number and other information and they said it is not covered. Even though it is noted on nhtsa site that 100k or 10 yrs this recall is covered.not sure what can i do as this is real serious issue where air bag will not be enabled even if a passenger sit in the seat

The front passenger seat sensor triggers the safety warning light on all the time. It may affect the airbag operable. This is a known issue and was subject of a voluntary recall program in 2008 by bmw. My car has the passenger restraint system malfunction message on the navigation screen and also the seatbelt light and the airbag light are illuminated on the dashboard.there is a recall for seat occupancy sensor below and as you can see my car falls within the criteria as the cars affected by the recall but a visit to my local bmw dealer revealed that there was no active recalls under my vin number. This is an obvious safety issue as airbags will not deploy and the risk of being seriously hurt or killed. This is something that bmw should replace in my carunder the recall as it has the same malfunctioning part such as the cars listed below.recall id # 57362 - air bags:frontal recall date aug 05, 2008recall date:aug 05, 2008model affected:2006 bmw 3-seriessummary:bmw is recalling 200,000 my 2006 3 series sport seat, my 2004-2006 5 series standard and sport seat, and my 2004-2006 x3 passenger vehicles. If this occurs, the front passenger air bags, with the exception of the head protection system, will be deactivated and the air bag warning lamp as well as the passenger air bag "on-off" lamp will be illuminated.consequences:in this situation the front passenger air bags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system would not be possible.remedy:dealers will rework the front passenger seat sensor mat so that external force application to the seat does not cause a crack to the mat. The recall began on november 6, 2008. Bmw will also extend the warranty on these vehicles to 10 years from first registration without any mileage limit. Passenger seat/airbag warning malfunction.this warning has been on since i purchased vehicle.it is obviously the common seat mat sensor failure.and it would appear that either my vin isn't on the previous recall or it has expired for my year and model.but my wife sits in that seat and if we have an accident and her airbags do not deploy whose fault will that be?

Failure of the "vehicle center satellite module".

While traveling and slowing down to make a turn into a business, the car beside me (left of me) makes a quick fast u turn and ends up hitting my car. Airbags deployed, hitting me into my face/head very hard. I have been in treatment since. I have had to have major surgery on my neck, still have problems and may need more surgery.my neck will not be the same and always in pain.i have loud ringing in my ears that is permanent.i have headaches with sinus problems. I believe i would have been fine with my seat belt on. I feel like the airbags should have not deployed under these conditions. I now suffer from depression, can't work doing what i have done for over 20 years now and anything else very long with out being in pain in my neck. I am very upset over this.

The contact owns a 2004 bmw 5 series. The contact stated that the air bag and passenger restraint lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the front passenger seat occupant detection map needed to be replaced. The approximate failure and current mileage was 79,000.

Passenger restraint malfunction illuminated on the dash.it indicates that the seat belt lock and/or airbags may not work in an event of an accident.when i called bmw, they told me that my car is not covered under this recall and it will depend on my local dealership if i will have to pay for the repair.

Within the past 6 months of driving, my airbag for the passenger side had tripped three times.the third time i brought it in, i researched on a recall for the passenger sensor.i printed out the page from safercar.gov, and they told me that my vin# does not fall under the category.the recall specifically stated for my bmw 545i 2004.i am not happy due to the fact that you buy a car and for something that cannot wear out brakes...

The malfunction continued until the engine was shut off. The failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. I own a 2004 bmw 545i sedan and the passenger airbag light came on for a while already, and i read about the recall on your website and called bmw na and they told me that my car was not under the recall. And told me to bring it to one of the bmw dealers to get it fix which i will have to pay for. I checked at one of the bmw dealerships and they told me it will cost me more than $1000.00 to fix the passenger\'s seat airbag sensor. I just don't understand why my car is not under their recall list when my car matches the exact description of the recall they are having?! please help. Thank you!

Wire rot deterioration at the headlight assembly. Concern electrical fire due to bare exposed wires. Notified the dealer and manufacture without resolution. Personally had to pay over $500 to he dealership just to wrapped with electrical tape. After 3 months, currently experiencing high beam failure (hid adoptive passenger side) which the dealer to replacement cost of $2599.

The contact would like to use his submitted email as the actual complaint. Our 2004 bmw 530i had the driver's heated seat catch fire. I am not getting much help from bmw on this matter. To me, this is one helluva of an easy way to cause a major accident. Only because of my partner's quick thinking and turning off the heater was she able to stop the fire. It was hot enough that it melted the foam (toxic i am sure) in the seat. Something like this happening while you are going down the road is right up there with toyota and their acceleration problems. Either way a major accident can happen. Not to mention that a person could be severely burned. While the car is out of warranty this seat has never been abused. The driver of the car weighs in at about 120 pounds. From checking the internet there seems to be a quite a number of such instances. Thank you scott the failure mileage was 60,000.

The contact owns a 2004 bmw 545i. The contact stated that he noticed that there were various warning lights that illuminated on the instrumental panel. He stated that the vehicles i-drive would malfunction causing the radio to fail, gps, and he was unable to make phone calls from the vehicle.the speedometer also displayed0 instead of the actual mph that was being driven. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer and they were unable to diagnose the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000. The vin was unavailable.

About 3 weeks ago we noticed in the front passenger seat "a mark" that looks like a burnt - we thought that it was just a mark or somebody put a hot bottle o cup on the seat - but this morning we turn the heating in both seat to warm up a little bit then smell and smoke start to come out the burnt mark. We turned it off both sides and open the window - now our conclusion is the heating element caused that burn in the seat.

Warning notice on "i drive" system that there was an emergency with the lighting system and the car should be stopped immediately. Directional signals no longer worked, emergency flashers were inoperative and headlights not operating properly. Brought car to dealer the next day and the problem was corrected with an update to the "i drive" software leading me to believe that bmw is aware of this very serious safety issue but has chosen to ignore it until owners experience the problem and then the owner has to pay for the update to correct the software glitch. My cost was $320.92.

Active steering fault light and the passenger restraining system lights come on after car parked for over a week during a trip out. Several forums have indicated similar failure with excessive repair costs from dealer.

Engine tapping/knocking on first drive of day. 8 service visits. Service by bmw confirmed "noise is not normal." escalated to bmw na 3 times. First serviced under bmw original warranty. Bmw claims just a noisy engine by design. Even though bmw claimed it was normal, bmw could not tell me what it was or coming from. Bmw is not compliant in performing under the new car warranty.

My wife started the car and the headlights and hazard lights began flashing and turn signals did not work. Shut off and restarted the car multiple times with same effect. Drove car to bmw dealer. Wire insulation deterioration causing short, potential fire hazard, 5 separate lighting components all wiring insulation severely deteriorated causing short circuiting and inoperable headlights. Bare copper wires making contact i have an extensive history in electronics and firefighting. This issue was found while changing a bulb. Transmission slams into gear when taking off from an almost stopped position causing the vehicle to jump forward violently.this has launched me into intersections and caused me to almost rear-end several vehicles.this happens on a weekly basis of daily driving.the dealership wants to reprogram the transmission computer at a cost to me(vehicle out of warranty) even though this is a known problem.

1.i identified a problem with the 2004 bmw 545i which i have.i researched the issue, which i will explain below (in section 2 as requested), online, and found that hundreds of people have had the same issue.i found that in some instances, bmw correctly diagnosed the issue, however in many instances, they did not (in section 3, as requested).2."the car would shift into 5th gear & then between 35-40mph at a very low 1200rpm or so i would get the surging or slipping of the transmission. It was a very light repetitive hesitation. It almost felt like the electronics were trying to decide whether it should stay in 5th or shift back to 4th because of low rpm's. It would happen with an extremely light accelerator pressure. If you gave it a little more gas it would go away. A couple times i'd get a really harsh surge almost like the "slam".the manner that the car behaves can really cause an accident with the surge in the transmission, & the distraction that it causes to the driver.it has become a distraction to me, being the driver, & also noticed by passengers in the vehicle, when they feel the car surge, & their is another vehicle in front of me.3.i took the car to a bmw dealership, & described the issue. The service advisor (representative) stated that they would look at the vehicle, as they had other complaints about this, as well. He said that they would probably need to do a software upgrade, or replace the transmission. I received the car back, & was told that the software was upgraded, & to take the vehicle and see how it drove. I drove the vehicle home, & the issue was still there. The repair invoice says the software was not updated. It already had the latest version. I took the car back, and they stated the operation of the car is normal. It is not normal. You may reference http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=401524 for other who have had the issue. The mechatronics unit was replaced on some, and always resolved the issue.

The contact owns a 2004 bmw 545. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph when the accelerator pedal was engaged, the vehicle began to shudder. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who recommended that the transmission be replaced; and offered to pay for half of the repair cost. The vehicle had not been repaired when the complaint was filed. Additionally, prior to the transmission failure the vehicle was taken to the dealer in regards to a burning odor and a transmission fluid leak in which the vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 73,000. The current mileage was 74,100.

Vehicle lunges forward at low speeds such as parking; 4 times in the last month, when i am pulling out of a parking space, the vehicle has lunged forward.2 of those 4 times, i almost hit the vehicle in front of me.i had shifted from reverse, to drive, and just taken my foot off of the brake, and the vehicle jumped forward.the dealer has continued to say that things are ok and normal.they are not normal.additionally, i have other shifting issues below:--35mph (5th to 6th hesitation) 5-6 hard shift (sport mode going 45-55 mph) slow to engage reverse-- gear shifting in general is just sloppy (the loaner that the dealer provided, shifted great).

Car suddenly and violently lunges forward from a stop, slow speeds or when at low rpms. It occurs several times per day and it feels as if being rear ended.

Had my car 2004 545i (78,250 miles) serviced at bmw dealership in long island for a defective transmission pan leaking at fluid. Dealership replaced and test drove before i picked it up but also denoted that there was an oil leak attributed to vacuum pump/vanos seals which needed to be replaced soon.as i was driving it back to nj from long island dealership i noticed a transmission 'kick/jerk/surge' as car decelerated several times. Drove the car to the market on sunday (7/25/2010) and on the way back warning engine malfunction stating 'engine operating at reduced output'. Emailed the bmw sa in long island that replaced defective transmission pan/at fluid and he felt it may be attributed to oil leak and bad vacuum pump/seals and have it looked at asap. My local bmw sa in nj just emailed me today (7/28/2010) stating:"looks like the trans is bad waiting for bmwna to get back to us we sent them all the faults sorry for the bad news" reports of these type of transmission 'surge' is not isolated to 2004 545i model but to many 5-series up to 2008 as noted in the following forum:http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=401524this issue needs to be addressed not on a local dealership but on a corporate, with government oversight, level as it poses serious risks to all drivers.

Depending on the manner and frequency of the front passenger's entry and exit, small cracks have developed in the mat.

Seat-warmer overheated, burning holes through the leather driver's seat, causing minor skin burns before terminating use of unit.over the past two months, i had noticed a burning odor in the car periodically, but neither i nor my mechanic had been able to determine the source of the odor.on 1/27/12, i felt the extreme heat in my seat while driving, and found two charred holes in the leather seat.it is important to note that there was not a fire per se, but in order to register the fact that there was (minor) injury attributed to one person, this form required stating "yes" to the question regarding fire.i have no doubt that this failure could certainly lead to fire if continued use of the unit had occurred.

Fire:the contact owns a 2004 bmw 545i. While driving approximately 40 mph with the driver side seat heater engaged, the contact began to smell an abnormal burning odor and the seat began smoking. The contact shut off the heater and noticed a burned hole in the seat. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the contact was advised of nhtsa campaign id number: 04v575000 (seats: front assembly: seat heater/cooler) he then contacted the manufacturer and was advised that his vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle the vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000 and the current mileage was 66,600.

In may of this year i leased a brand new 530i bmw.while driving to work this morning using the heated seat, the seat along with my jacket and sweater caught fire.thankfully i was not hurt but shaken up.the car has been towed to the dealer and they have been notified.i am concerned for the safety of others especially for those people how would not know what to do or how to react.my wife could have been driving the car with kids and who knows what could have happened.any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.thank you!

The drivers side seat warmer caused a fire in my 2003 bmw 545. I was real lucky that i smelled a strange odor and was able to put the fire out after shutting off the seat warmer.

We just purchased our bmw 545i in mid october.on november 13th while driving home from our son's home we smelled something burning.my husband soon realized that the driver's seat and his pants were on fire.we immediately turned off the seat heaters and was able to put the fire out.we were fortunate that no one was injured, and while a pair of pants were ruined, my husband did not sustain any burns.our dealer immediately took the car back to the dealership and furnished me with another car to drive.i am now being told that the seat heaters are on national back order and do not know when my car will be fixed.i do not blame the dealer, but have to question if bmw is aware of a problem.

The contact owns a 2004 bmw 5 series. The contact stated that he smelled smoke while driving approximately 25-35 mph. The vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic where they advised him that the driver's side heated seat warmer burned a hole through the seat. The manufacturer was later contacted and they offered no assistance. The mechanic advised the contact that the seat warmer was defective and needed to be replaced. The contact did not receive any injuries. The heated seat warmer was disengaged as a temporary repair. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The contact owns a bmw 2004 545.the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v446000 (service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:vacuum) yet the vacuum pump was still leaking.the dealer advised that the entire vacuum pump would need replacing. The contact called the manufacturer regarding the recall repair and they advised that they were unable to assist.the contact was not satisfied with the recall remedy and stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive.the failure mileage was 93,570.

It was a recall for brake fluid pump check valve oil leak, and they replaced vacuum hose, did not fixed fluid leak . Fluid is still leaking a small amount.

While driving at speeds of 45 mph and depressing the brake pedal, the brakes would not fully engage. The vehicle decreased in speed but would not stop. She was able to move the vehicle from the highway and engaged the emergency brake to stop the vehicle.mechanic advised the brake booster and vacuum had failed.mileage 60,000.

Active steering fault light and the passenger restraining system lights come on after car parked for over a week during a trip out. Several forums have indicated similar failure with excessive repair costs from dealer.

I owned a 2004 bmw 525i e60 had "active steering fault came on at all time .the dealer wants 4000usdto fix the problem but the steering control is fine . I believe this issue had related to steering angle sensor defective from bmw factory and dealers in us did not want to fix this manufacturing defects. This problems had happened to all bmw's .all over the blogs .customers had filed a complaint about this issue. Please looking into this problem(s).

Bmw 2004 545iactive steering problem. My steering wheel suddenly shifted to the right. The active steeringlight went on.now the car drives straight with the steering wheel tilted to the right. This is caused by the battery voltage drop. Car starts to shut down major componentsactive steering, transmission, navigation, and i-drive system which controls the whole cars electronics. Scary when you have a 8 month old kid in a car.

The active steering malfuntion light came on and the steering wheel turned aprox. 30 deg off center. The car drives fine but the wheel is stuck 30 deg off center.

Today i realized for the first time that both my rear tires were worn beyond the tread on the inside of each tire. I could see the threads! i just came back from a long trip with my family and am thanksful that our tire(s) did not blow out on the freeway.i took it to the dealship today (irvine bmw) and this particular service manager stated that this is about the 6th, bmw 530i that he has seen this on. He pointed to the rear wheel from the back section, where you can visibly see that both rear tires are not even. They both tilt inwards, causing the excess wear on the inside of the tire. The outside of the tires are almost as good as new. He sted that this would be warrantied and replaced. I shall see tomorrow when i take the car in. Nevertheless, this problem can have some serious consequences. I also noticed that my front tires were wearing excessively on the inside, but not nearly as bad as the rear. I have 16,000 on my car.
