(1) i was driving my 2000 bmw 323i on a feeder road, at about 40 mph.the car has approximately 69,000 miles.(2) the side airbags (driver's side) unexpectedly deployed with no apparent reason (no collision, no road bumps).the engine automatically cut off and emergency lights automatically went on.i was able to restart the car, drive it home, and avoid being hit by other cars.(3) i checked the nhtsa website and apparently there had been a recall in 2002 on 2000 bmw 323i for this very reason.however, i never received a recall notice from the maker despite the fact that i have always religiously taken the car to bmw dealers for oil change and repairs, and despite bmw has my address since it regularly mails advertisements to my residence. The next day i took the car at the local bmw dealer for repairs and asked about the recall. They told me that based on the vin, my car was not among those involved in the 2002 recall.they also told me that they were unsure as to weather bmw would own the defect and pay for repairs since the car is out of warranty.thus, i got my insurance involved to get a second opinion on the problem. I am still waiting on a solution of this issue.

I received a vehicle recall from bmw in september 2014 for my driver side airbag. My vehicle was purchased from momentum bmw of houston ( 713-5963400). I heard nothing further and in nov 2014 called momentum bmw. I was told they knew nothing of the recall but they took my name, vin and data.on december 12th i stopped by their dealership and went to the service department.i was now told that no parts were available for my repair because i had not come in to have them ordered.so i went through this process -providing once again, address, vin contact information etc.i was told i would be notified when i could come in and have the airbag replaced. Now on march 6th i have still not been contacted and after 4 telephone call attempts have been unable to talk to anyone in their service department. I left a voice message for their service manager to contact me. So in short, 6 months after being notified by bmw (in writing) that my car needs a passenger side air bag replacement the responsible bmw service department has never contacted me.i am sending in this notification as instructed on my written letter -"if your bmw center is unable to remedy the defect without charge or within a reasonable period of time, notify the administrator, national highway traffic safety administration.
Takata recalldriving around 25 mph car hit a pothole going straight on a city street. Side passenger airbag deployed hitting my cousin just as described in this recall 02v223000.the car is also affected by the takata inflators airbag recall which thankfully didn't deploy at the time of hitting the pothole.bmw does not want to take responsibility for the deployed air bags because, according to them, the car's vin number was not affected by side air bag deployment, even though year and model matches the effected vehicle.they are, however, willing to repair the takata airbag.

After having the control arm bushings replaced and a 4 wheel alignment completed at a bmw service dealership in tyler, tx, apparently the steering angle sensor (located at the bottom of the steering column) failed which caused the dynamic stability control (dsc), brake and abs lights to illuminate.when the incident occurred, i was driving 70 mph on a dry highway using the cruise control.when this sensor failed, all three lights illuminated and the cruise control ceased to work.according to the bmw service department, there is no requirement to re-calibrate the steering angle sensor after an alignment is completed.additionally, per the service manager at the bmw service department, they are replacing steering angle sensors in a variety of bmw automobiles at "3 to 4 per week".estimated cost to repair is between $500 - $1000.

The doors do not unlock if they are parked in the sun in temp. In excess of 80-85 degrees. The door central locking does not work with either the keys (twice clicks to unlock all the doors).once the drivers side is opened it takes 1/2 hour of air conditioning blast to have the system cool down and allow the unlocking with the button or the remote.
The door locks of my car are electronically controlled via remote and a button on my center console. The gm5 door locking module has intermittent issues, one of which will not allow you to lock or unlock the doors while you are in the vehicle. In an emergency or accident one would not be able to exit the vehicle using the unlock button or remote.

Deck lid wiring harness had to be replace due to worn/cut wires.the car is a 2000 bmw 323cic with 28,000 miles on it.the car has been operated since new only by my wife.the car is kept in a garage and has been service by bmw only.a back up light was not working and instrument lights were not working properly.it appears evident that the deck lid harness was either improperly installed at the factory or was of a defective design.i was concerned that cut wires could have produced a fire if not corrected in a timely fashion.i had the car repaired at our local bmw dealer.
Ltr from (ca) re 2000 bmw 323i, defective engine wiring harness and throttle body malfunction cause computer failure with sudden loss of power & deceleration at high speeds.the vehicle lost power shortly after the emi, check engine soon, and dsc lights illuminated.the vehicle was towed to a bmw dealer.
I was unaware of the previous defect notices about the frame / body having a weak spot and was driving at 40 mph when my rear shock and the part that holds the shock in place went through the metal frame ripping the metal away and allowing the shock to puncture through the frame just below the trunk area and the car was then inoperable. I was quoted a price for repair of 6500 and was informed of the 2005/2006 lawsuit where bmw was sued for this defect and repaired some cars for a year after the lawsuit ended but this was prior to my purchase of the vehicle and when i contacted bmw of no america headquarters, they asked me to take the car to the nearest bmw dealer and have them do a diagnosis which i immediately did and that cost was over $10k of which bmw offered to pay only 20%. I then took it to another bmw mechanic who repaired it for $3000 and bmw will not pay any part of the bill because it was not done at a dealership, i do not understand how bmw can get away with a defect like this and so many cars affected by it and not have to repair it at their cost? it is their defect.
Bought my 2000 bmw 323i brand new, i'm the first and only owner.i have had it only dealer serviced with all records kept. At 67k miles the reverse went out.dealer told me it was the transmission.being that it would be in the thousands to fix i continued driving it with no reverse.meaning i push it.i contacted bmw on several occasions and i was told it was regular wear and tear on the car that caused it.yet there are thousands of people out there who have reported the same problem on online forums.shame on bmw for not taking responsibility for this problem.

Subject: intermittent ihka blower operation on bmw e46 produced prior to 06/2000.situation: the ihka blower will intermittently cut out. The ihka lcd display will indicate that the blower is operating even though the blower is not functioning.cause: ihka final stage resistor (blower regulator).
In late march,2007, my bmw 323i blew a head gasket after only 82,000 miles.this was after the car being babied with service etc.the dealer i took the car to, presstige imports in santa rosa,ca. Found that the cooling system was running at over 300 degrees and warped the block, ruining the engine. They were as confused about this as i was because they had performed all of the service and had just serviced the car 2 months before, with no indication of any problem. They asked bmw for some help in the repair cost since this was so unusual.they also gave me a loaner car at no charge, and have been unbelievably wonderful throughout this whole experience. Bmw came back and announced that they don't care about the problem and won't intervene at all, causing me to have to pay about $6000 for a " used" engine to be put in. I have since gone onto google and found hundreds of posted pages about other owners having the same problem.this is obviously a problem that bmw refuses to acknowledge, and i would like to find out what can be done about it or them. Thank you for any assistance that you may be able to provide. Robert lackey

Consumer complained of a brake lamp problem.when applying the brakes, thebrake light in the interior of the vehicle illuminated, but only the rear right lamp illuminated when the brakes were applied. Owner contacted the manufacturer.however, this vehicle was not included in the current recall due to vin. Also, warranty expired.
A year ago, my gas gauge sensor went out. The car had less than 100,000 miles on it. Today, my 2000 bmw 323i has 111,000 miles on it and the vehicle will not drive in any gear without a grinding sound. I almost got killed by a car behind me because i could suddenly not accelerate at a stop light and i had to get out to push the vehicle to safety. Within the past few months the car would drive, but only when it was warm. Now it is completely inop. This car has been well maintained! it would cost me over $4000 to get a new transmission and i still over $6000 on the car. Despite thousands of complaints regarding the 2000 bmw 323i transmission failure, bmw refuses to do anything. I currently have no operable vehicle and i still have to maintain my auto loan payments and find alternate transportation to work. I have spent over $3500 in additional repairs to this vehicle on brakes, new catalytic converter sensors, trailing arm, ball bearings, etc.
Transmission problem, unable to put manual stick in 1st, 3rd and 4th gear; 2nd manual shift pops out of gear.braking system, brakes squeeking during breaking.dsc/eml - according to manual, its an system malfunction and a problem with the traction control; light stays on when driving.fuel injection - lights stays on when driving.exterior mirror -would not tilt when in reverse.brakes light - instrument light stays on when driving.(other)service engine - instrument light stays on when driving and beeps.other problems: trunk lock - intrument light stays on, navigation system - data disappers when starting car and when driving.cd/radio manual different from the sound system in the car, seat memory - settings won't keep when entering the car, key memory - setting won't keep, exterior body - leaning to the right was reported to me by another driver, engine - hesitates, or trottles.
While driving at 30 mph the fuel tank disconnected from vehicle because one of the straps separated due to improper welding.dealer has inspected vehicle.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i the car suddenly de accelerate in highway speed this already happens twice the car is already in the service twice and they replaced the throttle sensor cost $800. This month happen again while driving back from work in the freeway the car suddenly de accelerate and almost got into a accident. I check online and a lot of people having problem in this car. Need help.
Lock/latch mechanism sometimes malfunctions, such that you cannot unlock passenger side door from the inside or outside.when that happens, at least i can use the manual key to open the driver's side door.but bmw has the foresight to not include a key opening on the passenger side.so a few times, i had to ask my passenger to crawl over to her seat by climbing over the driver's side.this is more than inconvenient; it's embarrassing, especially for ladies in dresses.
The locks repeatedly quit working on all passenger doors. The problem is intermittent. This seems to be a general deficiency of the gm5 module on bmw.
We have a safety issue with our bmw 323i year 2000.the electric door locks will actuate and then you cannot get out of the car through 3 or 4 doors.the electric locks will not disengage and you cannot release them with the handle from the inside of the vehicle.passengers are basically trapped inside the car and have to climb over the front seat to exit the vehicle.problem has been recurring frequently.after an extended period of time, we are usually able to get the locks to work.i found 10 complaints filed on this same issue with one death and 3 injuries resulting from this malfunction.there are probably more complaints but i just looked at 3 vehicle years.
The front passenger door on my bmw 323 cic (model year 2000) regularly fails to unlock preventing passengers entry or exit through this door.i replaced the actuator on the passenger door and the door still fails to unlock regularly using all possible means available, i.e. Key fob, interior unlock button, or pulling repeatedly on the door handle to attempt to open the door.they all fail leaving the passenger (front & back since i own a two door) trapped in the car and forced to climb out the driver's door after all other passengers have left the car.this is a safety issue for passengers in my car who are handicapped, recovering from surgery, not in good physical shape to climb over the middle console to exit the vehicle or if there is an accident.this also is a common issue on this model which bmw has not acknowledged and initiated a voluntary recall to fix.given the safety issues that this type of common problem presents, i would like the nhtsa to investigate and determine if bmw needs to be forced to do a recall to address this.
All passenger doors fail to open (even manually) due to a faulty gm5 (computer) or door lock actuator resulting in a hazard if there were to be a fire or accident.
The door locks on my car fail in the middle of the day, now almost every day.it is impossible to open the doors, except the drivers' door, from the inside of the car.this would be very dangerous in an emergency / accident, passengers would be unable to exit the vehicle.this appears to be a common bmw defect, i know many other owners who have suffered this problem.why haven't these cars been recalled?
Door locks cannot be opened from inside the car.
Sometimes the doors on my 2000 bmw 323i will not unlock and when i use the key to unlock thedoor it will only open the driver side door. When this occurs the unlock button doesn't work and pulling the door handle does not work either. Passengers have to climb through the driver side door and in case of an emergency with there being only one escape route this could cause serious injury or death.
Dt: 2000 bmw 323i. The electronic locking systemfailed. When this failed it locked withfamily in the car.went to use the button to unlock the doors and they would not unlock, therefore, went to use the handle to open the door and it would not open.had to getfamily out of the back seat from the windows.took vehicle toa mechanic, and he saidthe electronic locking systemfailed.the car was going into the bmw shop on friday. Cannot drive this car with the doors still locked. E-mailed the manufacturer this morning about the problem.
Owner took vehicle in foremergency parkingbrake problems, emergency parking brake did not hold. Repair still allowsvehicle to roll, even when emergency parking brake is fully engaged.please describe details.
The car got stuck in the driveway. No reverse. Forward still working.
Wastrying to reverse n it wouldn't it periodically won't reverse until car warms up.window won't go up without manually pulling it up.
Picking my son up from school and no reverse. No indications anything wrong put into reverse acts like its in neutral. Absolutely no reverse. Drove home and had vehicle towed to transmission shop. Went online and shocked to see the number of no reverse failure online. The no reverse org in 2009 is no longer up but shocked how many people posted the exact problem! bmw north america or corporate says they can't do a recall and to notify nhtsa. Ethically, we both know they should fix these faulty drums they outsourced to gm and did not tell anyone. Please recall the no reverse failure for the 2000 model, thanks for recalling the sub-frame cracking.bmw service centers are a rip off and never tell the owner what's really going on. I am an original owner, have meticulous service records and feel the us needs to make them stand behind their product. Please help us.getting stuck in a dangerous parking lot at night would not be safe? please ask bmw to fix their faulty drum.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i. The contact stated that while parked the contact placed the vehicle in reverse and depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle would not reverse. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated the reverse drum would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i.the contact placed the gear into reverse to back into the driveway.suddenly, the engine began to rev, but the vehicle did not move.he placed the gear back into drive and the vehicle moved forward.he placed the gear into reverse again and the engine revved.the contact exited the vehicle and pushed it into the driveway.the dealer stated that the snap ring failed out of the clutch drum, preventing the vehicle from moving in reverse.the vehicle has not yet been repaired.through online research, the contact found numerous complaints on the same defect.he believes this should be repaired by the manufacturer.the current and failure mileages were 90,450.updated 6/9/08
The car will not go in reverse
The reverse gear is not working. I cannot reverse... This occurred with no warning and for no apparent reason.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i with zero accidents. There are 88,000 miles on it, and suddenly the reverse gear is not working. After doing some research online, i have found that this is a common occurrence for this very make and model. I contacted bmw immediately and not only did they say that there is no recall for this transmission, but that there was nothing they would do about my situation. This is a ridiculous problem to have at only 88,000 miles. I would like to submit formal notice of bmw's defective transmission.
My bmw 323i was working fine yesterday and i get in it this morning and it refuses to do reverse. When i put it in reverse it just sounds like it's in neutral and i am revving up the engine. I have to get a new transmission or th part repaired but it's still going to cost 2000.
2000 bmw 323i. Consumer states reverse gear does not engage *tgw
Got in car first thing in the morning put it in reverse and nothing happened. It was like it was in neutral. Then car rolled backwards as it was on a slight incline applied breaks and put car in drive and all the forward gears worked fine, tried reverse again and same thing happened didn't move no matter how much throttle was applied. There was no indication/warning that there was a problem, before this the transmission worked great no problems at all.this is a very serious problem as it happens without warningit could seriously injure or kill someone.
My bmw 323i abruptly lost the ability to reverse on saturday, august 3, 2013.the problem is apparently very common to bmw 3-series vehicles that were produced during the late 1990's and early 2000's.there is even a website devoted to it (noreverse.org).bmw should consider doing a recall in order to correct this problem.
The reverse in my 2000 bmw 323i doesn't work as often as it should...my younger sisters had to help me push it or it would of hit another car beside it... There are millions of other people with this same problem so even if the car is maintained correctly it still gets messed up.... Bmw out sourced there transmission to gm and i think they should pay for there mistakes and help out a lot of unhappy customers who didn't buy these cars for cheap.... When you buy a luxury car you expect it to at least reverse or at least if its a know issue get some kind of compensation... Another unfair thing is that most people don't even know that the transmission was outsourced to another company who may have done a [xxx] job on purpose just to screw its competition over..... Bmw in the past has never had these issues so its obvious what happened... Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The transmission will not go in reverse. There are so many bmw's with this problem.
I have a bmw 323i and the reverse went out. Looks like a common problem with this year make and model. I am dumbfounded that there has not been a recall on this piece of s#!% transmission. Bmw has lost me as a customer, since they don't stand behind their product when so many others are having the same problem. Backing out onto a two lane, 55 mph hwy my son and i were nearly killed since the transmission failed. I thought it slipped into neutral. No it failed!
The automatic transmission will not power the car in reverse. Forward gears all work normally. This was a sudden failure and after searching on the web, it appears this is a frequent failure of this gm supplied transmission in post 3/2000 bmws with automatic transmissions.
One day i was leaving target to take my son to his dr. Appt. And my car would not reverse. Reverse acted as a neutral. It was only me and my son i had to ask someone to push me backwards. Embarrassing!!!!! after that i didn't have the problem again until a few weeks later and now it is non stop. Its a major safety hazard. What if someone was to try and rob me when i leave work and i needed to back up quickly. I was told there is a crack in the rear drum and that it is 2,500-3,500 to fix. I am a single mom i cannot afford that. This shouldn't happen there is only 112,000 miles on this car and bmw refuses to acknowledge this problem. Something needs to be done.
Like the hundreds of others on the consumer affairs website, my 2000 bmw 323i wit71k miles failed to go into reverse. I was at church and proceeded to back out of the parking space when the car would not go into reverse. There were no warnings - ever. The car was running smoothly. I decided to check the web and was astounded that there were hundreds of bmw 2000 323i owners with the exact same problem. I contacted bmw of america via email and was given the same response as the other owners of "normal wear and tear." many owners had less than 50,000 and bmw is not owning up to the problem. Bmw had not and will not acknowledge the problem, but interestingly they are no longer using these transmissions. A class action is being discussed and rightly so. This is a rip off of thousands of consumers and definitely is a safety issue. I can see someone not being able to back up off of a train track, etc. Please issue a recall. Thank you.
I was picking up my daughter from school around 4:30pm on april 17, 2012 and when i put the car into reverse to back into a parking spot...the car had no power.the transmission just revved up like it was in neutral.i could not get the car to back up.i thought maybe i had it in the wrong gear but no it was in reverse.i put the car back into drive and went around the corner to wait for her.when i tried to reverse out of the parking spot it still didn't have any power. Thankful the car rolled back far enough to get out of the parking spot.once i got home i had to be pushed into my parking stall because once again the reverse was not working.i haven't had any major problems with my car, the miles are low 125,000 and it gets regular maintenance check ups.
I had no major problems with my 2000 bmw 323ci until today. Went to reverse out of a parking space, car would not move. Put the car in park and tried reversing again, nothing happened. Turned the car off, waited a few minutes, turned it back on, put it in reverse, nothing happened. Had to push it out of the parking spot and drove forward with no problems. Made it back to my work, parked in the spot and tried reversing to see if it worked, and it did. Random, weird. Called my auto mechanic and he said that this is typical of bmws when the transmission is going bad. Researched other similar occurrences and it seems that this a common issue for bmws ranging from late 90s to early 2000s.
I was backing out of a parking space. All of a sudden, there was no reverse gear. I pushed the car, myself. Please recall this car. I read about all of the other owners with the same problem. This is a danger to the owners and everyone around the vehicle. Not to mention, this is extremely expensive to fix.this is my first car.please consider help with this most dangerous situation.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i. While driving approximately 70 mph the contact attempted to accelerate further but the vehicle would not accelerate. The vehicle stopped responding to the accelerator pedal and rolled to a stop. The vehicle was shut off and upon restart the failure continued. The vehicle was towed to the contacts residence. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed and was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 138,000.
The car had been running fine. Went to leave a friends house and it would not go in reverse. Had to be pushed backwards, put into drive and forward gears worked fine. Drove about 11 miles, stopped and put it in reverse, and it worked. Couple days later i went to back out of the driveway, and reverse stopped working again. The reverse works on and off. This is extremely dangerous because a traffic situation could arise where reverse is needed to avoid a serious accident. Research has shown that this is an extremely common problem with these cars, yet bmw has failed issue a recall. Please help with this.
The vehicle has a hard time reversing, i can command it to reverse but sometimes nothing happens like it is in neutral, the car is a 2000 and only has 96k miles. This past month i have spoken with bmw about the issue. I let them know i feel it poses a safety risk but they said they cannot help me. Even though it is clearly a mfg. Defect. Just hoping to have an advocate to help me. The car is stationary on a street.
The vehicle does not go in reverse. It work intermittently randomly. I notice the complaints on line in www.noreverse.org. Thank you for your help
The car has 86,000 miles i am original owner and it will no longer engage in reverse! only solution is a new transmission which costs more than book value of car.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i that all of a. Sudden won't engage reverse. I was reading on pine and saw. I wasn't the only one with this issue. I called north houston bmw and they said i need a new transmission. I was looking at about $6000 for the transmission. I'm very upset and want to know if bmw recalled this issue and could i take my vehicle to them for the repairs at no cost to me.
My bmw is one of possible thousands that received a defective transmission made by zf. The reverse drive d hub breaks leaving pieces rattling around inside the transmission and no reverse. Check www.noreverse.org to see a few that have registered their bmw's with comments.repair cost range from $1800 - $5000 or more depending on particular dealerships and recommendations.i find difficult to believe that bmw has not offered anything in response to this issue that's plaguing so many of their cars with very high repair bills.bmw promoted these cars with "lifetime-no service" transmissions.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i. The contact stated that the transmission would not shift into reverse. On one occasion, the failure occurred and caused a fender bender with another vehicle. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The contact spoke with an unknown bmw dealer and an independent mechanic. The mechanic informed the contact that the reverse drum failed due to defective metal. The dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced because the parts were no longer available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 180,000.
The reverse gear does not work this morning when i tried to back the car from the parking lot. The forward gear is good though. My car has a dual transmission.
2000 bmw 323i. Consumer writes in regards to powertrain safety recall. *ld
I just got home and tried to put my 2000 bmw 323i in reverse to park but nothing happened! it was as if the car was in neutral! i am very upset as i have just recently purchased this vehicle. Something needs to be done as i am not the only one who is having this problem. This is a big safety issue that needs to be fixed!
I purchased a 2000 bmw 323i on tuesday march 14 from a private owner who had meticulous records of maintenance and vehicle only had 97k miles.two days later, the "reverse" went out but the other gears were fine.i took the car to a mechanic and said that i would be needing a new transmission. The bmw dealer is going to charge me $7000 to fix.i have only owned the car for 2 days and now is not drivable. I went online to search if this was a common problem and was astonished to see hundreds if not thousands of complaints about the same exact problem for the same make and model vehicle.bmwna is not doing anything about this.this is clearly a transmission defect and should be recalled.
Automatic transmission on 2000 323i will not go into reverse. Fed up!!! too expensive to repair. Bmw will do nothing. Same failure very wide-spread. Problem is all too well known to bmw. They just don't care.
Reverse gear intermittently goes out in the vehicle causing unsafe driving conditions. This is a widespread problem caused by an engineering defect that bmw refuses to acknowledge.
Reverse gear went out of transmission with no warning.
My 2000 bmw 323i had been working fine.one morning i went to back out of my driveway and it would not go into reverse.there was no warning that it was about to fail.i did some research and found that this problem is common on this year, model and make of car, due to the d-g ring in the transmission.
Reverse gear started not engaging and finally has given out completely.all other gears work fine and engage properly.car has always been properly serviced and maintained.there are currently 93,000 miles on the vehicle, average for its' age.it is very frustrating to have to push this otherwise wonderful car out of our driveway!
I owna 2000 bmw 3.23i that i bought brand new in 2000. I spent a lot of money for that car and had nothing butproblemswith it. I had to replace the window regulators many times, and had a water leak problem.i spend thousands of dollars in other items that wasjust crazy, especially for a car that just had70,000 miles.the bigproblemwhichcaused me write this complaint wasthe transmission problem that a lot of peoplewere having with their cars not wanting to go in reverse.the car just out of nowhere stopped going in reverse.this was just abnormal for a car with this low mileage.bmw did notwant to take responsibility forthis, and it wasjust crazy.iwasvery disappointed by their business tactic of not taking responsibility for this defective transmission.itwasclearly not normal, yet theywere trying to avoid to pay for a replacement, and they didn't care as they weremaking so many enemies.i never cared for mercedes as i liked the way bmw drove, but this experiencewasmaking them lose a customer for life. Please make them issue a recall for the transmissions, and stop this business behavior.
There were no events leading to my cars transmission failure. The reverse failed abruptly and now works intermittently. I have had the car for around three years and it was fine until it hit around 167,000 miles. I have not had the money to fix the problem so nothing has been done to fix it. I have been informed that the only solution is to replace the entire transmission.
Automatic step-tronic transmission reverse gear stopped working. This required a complete overhaul of the transmission. The transmission fluid is lifetime, and there are no service requirements. The transmission is original and was manufactured by zf friedrichshafen for bmw.
I have an issue with my 2000 bmw 323i sedan e46, on multiple occasions the reverse all of a sudden goes out, no noise, no warning, it just doesn't clutch reverse in the clutch box. Luckily i've been only in a park idol position. I would have to push my car to back out and it's really frustrating.and from researching, my bmw 323i transmission is made by gm, who which did a recall on there transmissions and so did cadillac because they have used the same transmissions as bmw 323i. I'm surprised bmw usa hasn't done a safety recall yet. I want to get this fix, but bmw can only swap a transmission which cost $5500.
The car worked just fine, went to put it in reverse and nothing. The car has only 70k miles on it and i have found thousands of people having the same problem.it seems to be a problem with 99-01 bmw i have included some links for you to check.http://www.noreverse.org/complaints.html#scottthis is a wide spread problem!
My 2000 bmw 323i at times will not go into reverse. My car has approximately 155,000 miles. I did take it for repair and was given an estimate of about $5000 to replace my transmission. With all the complaints that i have seen with this particular problem with these cars bmw should definitely do a recall and offer to replace these faulty transmissions.
My car suddenly, without warning has no reverse. As i looked online i noticed thousands of other bmw owners with the same issue. Noreverse.org has been very helpful for me to identifymany owners across the states with the no reverse issue. I can onlyhope the nhtsa will help us hold bmw accountable for such poorly produced craftmenship in their transmissions.
Like the hundreds of others on the consumer affairs website, my 2000 bmw 323i with 84k miles failed to go into reverse.i was at a store and proceeded to back out of the parking space when the car would not go into reverse.there were no warnings - ever.the car was running smoothly.i had the car towed to bmw of arlington and was told that the transmission was shot and the cost will be $5,000 for a remanufactured transmission.i decided to check the web and was astounded that there were hundreds of bmw 2000 323i owners with the exact same problem.i contacted bmw of america via email and was given the same response as the other owners of "normal wear and tear."many owners had less than 50,000 andbmw is not owning up to the problem.many had discovered that the transmission is a gm transmission and that gm issued a recall on its vehicles own vehicles however bmw had not and will not acknowledge the problem, but interestingly they are no longer using these transmissions.a class action is being discussed and rightly so. This is a rip off of thousands of consumers and definitely is a safety issue.i can see someone not being able to back up off of a train track, etc. Please issue a recall.thank you.
The consumer was unable to shift/accelerate in reverse gear. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The cause was not determined. Please provide more information.
I went out to leave the office and started the car put it in reverse...nothing.it sounds like it is in neutral.had the car diagnosed...the transmission is a5s325z.must be replaced.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i, got no reverse. I was on the middle of a busy street when my reverse didn't work!!!!....i had to keep going forward, i would have crashed if it wasn't for a good samaritan who slammed his brakes behind me and helped me push my car into position so i can drive forward.
My well-maintained 2000 bmw 323i (with only 100k miles) has lost the reverse function - i will require a new transmission with an estimated cost of $4000.
Sudden loss of reverse gear.
Several days of sluggish start, burning oil smell, transmission light came on - i took my car to a transmission shop and have been told that i need a new transmission.they referred me to this site because they looked up to see if there were complaints/recalls.
My 2000 bmw 323i automatic transmission had no reverse at 72,000 miles.all the other gears work fine.there was no signs prior to the failure. I had the transmission replaced and cost me $3000. Its been 4 years since and still no recall despite the hundreds of complaints with the same problem and situation. Bmw outsourced this transmission to gm who used the same one on their escalades which also failed.gm replaced their transmissions, but they wouldn't replace bmw's because it was outsourced....it would be real nice if something was done and i get back some of this money some day...
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i.she stated that when the gear shift indicator was shifted into reverse, the vehicle would not move.the failure only occurred while vehicle operated normally in all other gears.the dealer has not inspected the vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 61,850.
When putting vehicle into reverse, there is no power.engine revs as if in neutral.forward gears seem fine.internet search revealed this is a common problem with the transmission.this happened without warning.no warning indicators.estimated cost of replacement of the defective transmission is $6k.
Reverse suddenly stopped working on 2000 bmw 323i. After searching the internet for a solution, i discovered it is a widespread and common problem, thus my complaint. Such a know issue should involve a recall and, bmw, the company responsible should be compelled to remedy the defect in their product.
With no warning,no indication on dash, no previous problem, car would not back up, fortunately, i was in my own driveway and not in a precarious situation. 2000 323i automatic trans 100000+ mi dealer serviced since new,"lifetime fluid" no way to check fluid level, dealer says"fluid low clutches burned"??? lifetime fluid . I suspect and will check to find broken clutch drum so common to this trans as indicated in the many websites dedicated to this transliterally, hundreds perhaps thousands of similar complaintsare on line how many not reported?this is a dangerous defect as well as an obvious engineering failure that has nothing to do with the owners failure to service this vehicle or check the fluid level- in fact -the owner has no way to check the fluid level. Why has nhtsa not forced the manufacturer to address thispotentially deadly defect ? are we waiting for another "'pinto"series ofdisasters?
2000 323i with 92000 miles on it. Backed into garage the night before, left for work next morning and stop at local store. Came out and it wouldn't go into reverse. It just sat there like it was in neutral. No recourse from bmw. Just like other owners of bmw transmission problems, we shouldn't have to front the cost of a defective transmission that bmw installed in there vehicles. There needs to be a directive coming from the feds to have bmw replace these transmissions at no cost theowners.
I was backing into my garage like normal when with no warning my car wouldn't go into reverse, the rpm just revved up. I then called my bmw service center to find out that i need a new transmission for about $5,200. After almost choking i looked online to find out if there is anyone elseexperiencing the same problem thousands of other people are now having the same problem. Why won't bmw fix this potentially dangerous problem?
I have a 2000 bmw 323ci and the reverse gear stopped working all of a sudden. Sometimes it comes back and starts working again, but then it stops working again. I went to a transmission shop and they said it would cost about $3000. Bmw said they did not know about this problem and that i needed a new transmission. Please help!
No reverse in 2000 bmw 323i with 70k miles. Reverse went out suddenly with no prior problems or warnings.fortunately, i just arrived home and tried to park my car in reverse into my garage when i noticed the reverse acted like it was in neutral. Took to auto body shop $3300.00 to replace transmission completely.mechanic promised the car shouldn't have that problem ever again after replacing the transmission.
I've experience the common no reverse in my 323 bmw. The car has been running great and after a weekend away i go to drive my car and it won't reverse. It acts like it is in neutral and coasts. I have only driven my car once since then and it failed the 4 times i tried to reverse. I have contacted my local bmw repair shop and they have informed me that i need to replace the entire transmission. After some researching i have discovered that non bmw repair shops have been able to repair the reverse drum for $4,000 less. This apparently is common defect that needs to be recalled and taken care of by bmw. Or they should at least be able to repair the reverse drum and not make people purchase a new transmission so they make more money. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there paying for $5,000+ to get a new transmission when there are other options available that bmw is not making an option through their dealerships or repair shops.
Reverse gear in my 2000 bmw 323i stopped working without warning. Vehicle had 80k miles on it and has been serviced regularly. Although bmw north america wouldn't acknowledge this was a widespread problem they did offer to pay for half but i was still out over $2k a few weeks before christmas. That was awesome.
Very well maintained 2000 bmw 323i. Suddenly out of the blue "no reverse".
The reverse gear of my 2000 bmw 323i wagon will engage only with no acceleration.other gears work fine.trying to accelerate while in reverse gear just revs the engine.repair shop has told me that my reverse drum needs to be replaced which will require over 17 hours of transmission work - about $2500.i only have 82,000 miles on this car.
Could not back up in the middle of a busy intersection (no reverse and no warning). 323i bmw 2000 transmission failed.
2000 bmw 323it transmission reverse gear failed with no warning. There are hundreds and hundreds of complaints about this defect in bmw automobiles on internet chat rooms and newsgroups (search for "bmw transmission failure"). This failure is also well known by repair shops and owners groups.owners have to replace the transmission at their own cost.
Bmw 323 lost reverse without warning!without warning, my 3000 bmw 323i with 62,300 miles had no reverse. Car was taken to a transmission garage. Problem was identified as a broken reverse drum that shed metallic parts throughout the transmission requiring a overhaul. Cost $2800.
Last week my car quit going in reverse leaving me stranded. This car has 100,000 miles and has been extremely well maintained as i have been the original owner. This is apparently a common problem with 99/00 bmws and the zf automatic transmissions.the transmission has to be completely rebuilt at a cost of over $3000.the fact that this is such a common failure and can put individuals at risk is unconscionable.imagine a transmission going out during a u-turn where reverse is needed to safely move from oncoming traffic?
Well known, yet unacknowledged problem with bmw 3 series' transmissions.the problem began with a failure to engage in reverse.the solution is total replacement of the transmission with a cost of over $5000.
I drive a 2000 bmw 323i.i didn't experience any problems prior to the failure.i pulled out of my drive way and went to work and when i was leaving work my reverse was no longer functioning properly.luckily i could go forward.i took the car to the bmw dealer recommended replacing the transmission (dealer was very courteous).many owners of the 2000 bmw 323i have been reporting this defect, problem is no recall, and the consumer is paying for it.
2000 bmw 318i will not go in reverse.bought new in 2000 from long beach bmw in long beach ca.
2000 bmw 3-series: 63,000 miles the reverse went out on my transmission.
My 323i has the reverse gear is broken..... Found this from noreverse.org.cost me 3k to fix.
I own a 2000 323ci and like so many others my transmission has failed, no reverse. This is a major safety issue and i hope someone within this agency takes some action, like a recall , i mean wtf, r tax dollars in action once again :(
Transmission failure - reverse function no longer working.
I own a 2000 bmw 323 and my reverse just stopped working.i was in a parking lot that was busy and it just happened out of nowhere.there was no warning or build up just whamo it happened.it is very dangerous to lose reverse and is a costly repair.unfortunately i am not the only person this happened to, please refer to www.noreverse.org or http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.html to see others that have had the same thing happen to them.please investigate this because it is dangerous and happening to too many people to be coincidence.thanks
Sudden failure of reverse gear in automatic transmission.the transmission in my 2000 bmw 323ci failed without warning while backing.the car has 93,000 miles on it.apparently this is a well known problem (http://www.noreverse.org) that is being ignored by bmw.
Hello i bought a 200 bmw 323i and the car was working perfectly fine. After one week the car wont go in reverse.this is a very common failure of the transmission in 3 series and the deal wants $5000 for a new tranny or to rebuild it which is crazy considering i just bought the car.
Bmw 323i 2000 at 55tou miles suddenly it will not reverse to my garage. I research the internet and found out there hundreds of people complaining of no reverse in their bmw. I called the bmw executive office in new jersey [xxx]but not willing to do anything. I also mentioned hundreds of unhappy people on the website but still will not give assistance. With many bmw owners complaining no reverse on their car this should been recalled because of defective transmission. Here is the website of unhappy bmw owner's....http://www.noreverse.org/complaints_2009q3.html.. I appreciate it so much and other owners if you help us make bmw recognize 'defective transmission-automatic).information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I proceeded into a parking lot area. I came to a complete stop in front of the open parking spot and began to back into position when i determined that my vehicle would not operate in reverse. I parked the vehicle, turned the vehicle off, turned the vehicle back on and it would still not go in reverse. The vehicle operates normally in forward drive condition. Upon research of this matter, multiple complaints regarding this issue have been previously discussed.
I owned bmw 2000 323i with 79,000 miles and reverse suddenly stopped working.i went online and found that a lot of people are complaining with the same problem as mine.please look into this.
I was finish fill up gas tank, the guy infront of me still pumping, so i engage the reverse gear to move back, then all of a sudden the car just sit there like it is on neutral; it lost its reverse gear.i did some research online, then i found www.noreverse.org exclusive dealing with 2000 323i that all of a sudden the reverse gear is lose.
Car was operating fine.left for lunch at 11:30, backed car out of parking place.came back at 3:45 and vehicle would not go into reverse.zf 5hp19 transmission problems.
My 2000 bmw 323i with steptronic transmission stopped going in to reverse.when placed in reverse it operates as if it is in neutral.after researching this problem on the internet i found an overwhelming number of car owners that have the exact problem.all say that bmw is ignoring the problem since it is too expensive to recall.consumers are left with a bill of anywhere from $4000 -$8000 in transmission replacement.
My reverse stopped working on my 2000 bmw 323i. I have seen this is a common problem with this car. Bmw refuses to take responsability.currently i do not have the money to replace the transmission.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i car.about a week ago i went out to go to work and the car would not back up.i started researching the problem on the internet and there are hundreds of cases of this problem with this car.it seems that the transmission has a defective part and that a high % of these are going bad.it cost $4000+ dollars to repair.there is a website dedicated to the no-reverse problem.there are also many post on a consumer affairs site about the problems people are having. Bmw knows there is a problem but will not do anything.below are a couple of websites about the problem.someone needs to help, i can't afford to pay for this repair.thankshttp://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.htmlhttp://www.noreverse.org/index.htmlthe noreverse site even shows a picture of the defective part.
When leaving work, my car failed to go into reverse so i could pull out. I had to push the car out and took it to my mechanic who told me that this was a very common problem for this make of car.he told me that i would probably need to replace the transmission which i can not afford top do.after driving the car and making sure that i can always pull forward out of parking spots i can sometimes get the reverse transmission to engage and work properly.this seems to happen randomly and then eventually the sme problem will happen again.i have researched this online (noreverse.org) and found that this is a very common problem with these cars (2000 bmw 323i) and that bmw is aware of this and takes no responsibility.the transmissions in these cars is provided by gm, and is installed in cadillacs as well for which a recall has been issued. No recall has been issued for bmw.i feel this is a potentially major safety issue .my car has always been properly maintained and the fact that this could happen with 75,000 miles and having to replace the transmission is appalling!
A few days ago my 2000 bmw 323i would hesitated before going into reverse. It stopped working completely two days ago and i took it into a car mechanic who told me i need a new transmission and that this was the third time he needed to put a new transmission in a 2000 bmwi in the past year including one in august. I have just over 30,000 miles on the car and he said the transmission should not fail with that low mileage. Bmw was of no help at all and said there was nothing they could do since the car was out of warranty.
I have a 2000 bmw 323ci with an automatic transmission.i have owned it from day 1 - mile 0.i had to replace the transmission at 110,000 miles because the reverse gear broke off.now at 194,000 the replaced transmission is vibrating hard and the bmw dealership service department says that i need to replace it again.the first replacement was $ 4,100.today, i was quoted $ 4,918.
The bmw car was parked, when tried to back out the reverse gear did not work. This was a safety hazard as the car was parked down hill and close to a fencing. Car only worked in the forward direction and it was dangerous to move the car in the front direction. Thus causing safety concern. The dealership confirmed that the transmission needed replacement.on contacting several bmw service centres, few of them indicated that the reverse gear safety problem is occuring in several other same model and year car. They indicated this was due to a faulty design in the transmission of the 2000 323i bmw cars.
We brought our daughter a 2000 323i bmw, a few weeks after purchasing the car the car will not shift into reverse. This was a gift and our daughter was so happy, we spent a good amount of money on this car, it is in excellent condition, only has 50k miles and was garage kept and was never drove in the winter, and now it is sitting in the garage and cant be driven. I would like to become a member of a class action, this is a issue that has been going on for years,a dn bmw needs to recall the cars and fix the problem. Our daughter is so disappointed she cant drive her car. The bmw dealer that looked at the car said it was going to be 4800.00 for the transmission and they can not guaranteed that the new transmission will not do the same thing, and i don't want to have it fixed and it do it again and have to keep repairing the car. I know after all of this i will never buy another bmw. If anyone knows a classaction suit please email me at [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
On 8/707 i noticed that i could not shift my 2000bmw323ci into reverse.no prior notice and no engine or check lights came on.it's like being in neutral.the engine revs but there is no movement. In another instance i was on a hill and tried to back up.when i switched into reverse, the car rolled forward!! the problem persists as of today 8/13/07.a quick search of the internet reveals that this problem is widespread (see attached links).bmw recalled the 5 and 7 series for this reason but did not recall the 3 series (perhaps because too many 3 series were sold compared to the 5 and 7 series??).bmw really needs to address this problem before someone is seriously hurt. Http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.htmlhttp://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/01/bmw_transmission.htmlhttp://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=7on_your_side&id=4407296http://www.motortrend.com/cars/1999/bmw/5_series/recalls/http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-recalls/09-int/1999/bmw/7-series/index.html
I purchased a 2000 bmw 323i from carmax in hartford ct. When i purchased the vech it had a little less than 47,000 miles. On sunday 6-28-09 i attempted to back the vech out of a parking space but to my surprise my vehicle wouldnot move, the reverse gear stopped working. Afterwards i contacted the dealer to voice my concern, to no avail they were rude and not helpful at all.i then conducted some research on line and to no avail i found hundreds of complaints about the 3 series bmw model.i am shocked that bmw could make such a faulty product. Please look into this.thanks in advance.
The transmission of my 2000 bmw 323i failed to reverse without any warning even through all the recommended maintenance service have been done.
Bmw 2000 323i. The reverse went out with no warning. What the heck? how does this happen in mass with no recall from bmw. How have they gotten away with this in the usa?
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i.the vehicle failed to move when it was placed into reverse.the vehicle was towed to a private mechanic and he stated that the transmission failed.the transmission was previously replaced in 2006.the current mileage was 57,000 and failure mileage was 48,306.
I have a bmw 323i that i bought new back in 2000.this has been a secondary car that i have taken very good care of.recently, at 43,000 miles as i was trying to reverse, the car just idled as if it were in neutral.once i pushed it out of the parking space it would drive forward only.no warning whatsoever on the dash.upon further review of this issue i found a website called noreverse.org.apparently this is a very frequent occurrence with this car that bmw doesn't want to acknowledge.i took my car to the dealer and they told me that because the car is beyond warranty they can't help me.i told them about the complaint website and they told me that they had never heard of it. I can't believe they aren't willing to make this right.this is a defective part without a doubt.
My 2000 bmw 323i won't go in reverse. The problem occurred with no warning, as the car has been properly maintained and has operated perfectly until today. The present mileage is a little over 60,000. An online search of the problem has revealed this is a very common problem that's specific to my make/model/year, yet bmw disavows any responsibility. Estimated repair is $7,000, which has me feeling totally disgusted with bmw as a company, not to mention its products, which it apparently no longer stands behind. I can only hope the government will take action against bmw and force a recall.
Bmw is not on your list of vehicles! transmission failed on 2000 323i bmw with only 57k.scanning online complaints about 323i transmission failures it seems nhtsa should have recalled the unit by now!
I have a 2000 323i bmw and my reverse gear just randomly gave up.i cannot use the accelerator when reversing.i have seen several complaints and this is a costly issue.there should be a recall on these bmw's looks like the 1999 and 2000 models.
2000 bmw 323i, automatic transmission, reverse just stopped working, i have read all the complaints on 2000 bmw with no reverse and i cannot afford to spend over $5000 to repair it.the transmission is a 5l40e manufactured by gm for bmw.there is a weakness in the reverse clutch housing apparently it is machined to thin for a snap ring groove and it eventually breaks.the new clutch housing is modified to be thicker so someone is aware of the issue but bmw refuses to take responsibility for this engineering failure.
Recently my car quit going in reverse as i was backing out of a parking space. Luckily i was on a slight incline & there were no oncoming cars because i would have been hit as i rolled very slowly into the road like i was in neutral. This car has 85,000 miles and has been extremely well maintained. I have since learned that it is a common problem with 1999-2006 bmws. There are 2 different bmw transmissions made by zf, and both have a part called a drum that is too weak to last very long, and the manufacturer has started making a stronger replacement part. My transmission had to be completely rebuilt in order to replace that part, and the debris from the broken drum has to cleaned out. It took 3 days & cost over $3000 to rebuild.
2000 bmw 323i transmission just stopped going into reverse. Forward gears work fine.
Without warning transmission failed to go into reverse. New transmission needed with only 87,000 miles.
Reverse stopped working in car. Known issue in the same type of vehicle. Bmw does not want to admit to. Check out www.noreverse.org - everyone with the same problem.
After 105,000 miles, the my 2000 bmw 323i sports wagon all of a sudden - and without any warning - "lost" its reverse gear. The car was driven carefully and well-maintained. After researching the problem on the internet, i quickly learned that there are thousands or other consumers with year 2000 3-series bmw experiencing the same transmission problems. Having the transmission replaced by a bmw dealership costs more than $6,000. Apparently, a design flaw with the zf transmission (5hp19) is to blame for the loss of the rear gear, but bmw denies knowledge of a widespread transmission problem, nor do they take responsibility to have the faulty transmissions replaced - under whatever kind of warranty. Since i bought this car used 2.5 years ago, i have no chance to hold bmw or my dealership responsible, or -at least- negotiate a more acceptable resolution of the zf 5hp19 transmission problem.
Bmw 323 ci reverse stopped working. I was told it was a common problem and should stop driving it before the entire transmission blows. I haven't fixed the problem because the cost of repair is more than i can afford so i have it garaged for the time being.
Automatic transmission fails to go into reverse.
'2000 bmw 323i, 108k, transmission would not engage in reverse.engine revved up, but no engagement.this is so far intermittent and has taken place three times within 1 week.all other gears appear to work fine.all instances i had to manually push car out of packing spot.took to repair shop and reverse worked at the time so could not determine fault.i have since seen many identical reports listed on web.
I own a 2000 bmw 323i. Today the transmission stopped going into reverse. There was no prior warning, no prior failures, no slipping, etc. I got to work, attempted to back into a parking spot, and the engine just revved - no movement. Looks like a common problem. The repair will require a new transmission and the dealership quoted me $7000. I'm glad i didn't get into a traffic situation that required me to back up to save my life or someone else's. I called the dealership in roanoke va, they said there is no recalls and i called bmw of north america and they sad the same. 800-831-1117.
My 2000 323i (144k miles) reverse doesn't work anymore. I started noticing problems a few years ago but each time i complained they (northwest bmw in randallstown) never found a problem. I called the dealership and i was quoted a fee of ~$4500 for repair. This is insane, i think i've had this problem all along and no one really ever took the time at the dealership to investigate properly. I am very disheartened about the whole situation. The bmw manufacturers should have recalled this vehicle model several years ago.
Had brakes and suspension replaced and while at dealership the reverse gear went out.this is the same issue i see all over the internet.all other gears work other than reverse, which will cost 4000 to replace.
Bmw 323 cic convertible simply stopped going in reverse this afternoon.
I have a 2000 323i model and just yesterday the car's reverse gear stopped engaging. I researched the internet and see that a lot of folks are experiencing this problem. Bmw needs to stand up and issue a recall.
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle would not go into reverse. The issue was intermittent. The independent repair shop has not been able to determine the how to fix the problem.
Without any warning, my car would not go into reverse.it is a 2000 bmw 323i with only 77,000 miles on it.i did a search on the internet, and found out that there are dozens of other people who have had the same thing happen to them.this should be a recall item, the transmission just going out all of a sudden, but bmw doesn't agree.this is a dangerous situation, and they need to a do a recall, before someone gets hurt.
The transmission on my 2000 bmw 323i seemed to be going out so i took it to my mechanic for maintenance but after 3 weeks it seemed to have the same problem. I looked it up and it seems that bmw cars have the same issue. I don't have 6000 dollars laying around to get a new trans. Now im afraid that mine would go out soon. And im wondering why bmw is not taking responsibility for their product, no recall?, no help?, what's going on?, i need answers.
I drove to work this morning and upon leaving work my car just wouldn't go into reverse. I thought i would take my car to bmw tomorrow and have them check it. After getting home i did some research and found out there are numerous complaints about this same problem and that bmw has done nothing about it. It will cost as much as the car worth to replace the transmission.i lost my full-time job recently because of the bad economy and there is no way i can afford to pay for this repair at this moment. I demand from bmw to put a recall on this defective part and take full responsibility. Customer satisfaction should be their utmost priority.
Transmission failure on a 2000 bmw 323i.the car simply will not engage in reverse.this is a very common problem that bmw knows about but refuses to acknowledge.something must be done.
2000 bmw 323i zf 5hp19 transmission, will not go into reverse all of a sudden. Nothing else to say. Very big problem amongst bmw 323i.
Failure of the vehicle to work in reverse gear.
Auto transmission reverse failedwith no warning at 87,000 miles.bmw says replace transmission at full cost.
I drove my car to the store and upon returning, i was unable to back out of the parking space.the car would not go in reverse.there was no warning or any problems whatsoever prior to this incident. Forward gears continue work fine.my car only has 79,900 miles on it and i have regular maintenance done.the bmw shop wants $5100-$5400 to repair the transmission.it appears that this is a common problem and the consumers have no recourse.this is my only vehicle and i purchased it because i thought bmw was a reputable maker.please help.
1. Events landing up to the failure: none2. Car does not move in reverse when put in reverse gear. This happened without any warning.3. Car is not operational pending repairs.
Ihave a 2000 3.23i bmw . It has been dealer serviced and is in excellent condition . It has 89,000 miles. The other day i tried to back out of my parking space and the car wouldn't go in reverse. It drives fine ,so i took it to princetonl bmw and was in formed i would need another transmission. I am very upset ,the cost for repair -5400.00. . i happened upon this site (www.noreverse.org) while looking for a transmission and can not believe all the people who are having this same exact problem. Bmw needs to recall this transmission as it is defective.
No reverse in 2000 bmw 323i with 92k miles. Reverse went out suddenly with no prior problems or warnings.bmw dealer says hasn't been an issue.the dealers solution is to replace transmission completely, approx. $5,500.from looking at the number of complaints on the web concerning this issue, it seems bmw should recall this problem.i was fortunate enough to be in my garage when it quit working, but that would not have been the case just a few hours prior.
The reverse gear on my 2000 323i bmw stopped working. It goes into neutral instead. All the other gears work except reverse.i only have 65,000 miles on the car and have been told i may need a new transmission. A new transmission at 65,000 miles is ridiculous.i called bmw of north americaand my dealership. They say they have never heard about this, yet if you do a simple web search on bmw reverse transmission problems, it is a very common one. I do not think it's fair to pay for a "lemon" transmission.
My 2000 bmw 323i has had numerous problems since i purchased it back in january of 2001.i have now replaced 6 or 7 window regulators, the sunroof, the radiator, the cv boots and now the entire transmission needs to be replaced to the tune of $5,151.oh and did i mention that this car only has 67,000 miles on it??!!apparently the problems with the window regulators and the transmission is a rampant issue with this car and after many complaints, bmw refuses to acknowledge or address the problem.they should not be allowed to get away with this type of negligence.
I got into my 2000 bmw 323i, andput the car into reverse but the did nothing but idle.i've bought the car used about 6 months ago with 92k mi, and i now has 100k. The car clearly has been maintenance meticulously and there was no warning of any kind prior to this.
My 2000 bmw 323i abruptly stopped going in reverse.like many dissatisfied 323i owners, i took it to a local dealership only to find out it needs a new transmission.i searched online and many other bmw owners are dealing with this frustration.the complaints are being logged on the following website: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.html
No reverse, transmission does not engage reverse gear.
As has been the case with many other owners, my reverse gear is essentially gone. My car will roll if i have a slight grade, but there is no power in reverse. Depressing the accelerator does nothing but rev the engine when in reverse. All forward gears in transmission work smoothly and flawlessly.
I have a 2000 323i bmw with about 120k miles.i have never had a problem with the transmission before.i had driven about 40 miles on the highway and then pulled into a parking lot.i parked my car and when i tried to reverse to straighten my parking my car would not reverse. When i put it in reverse the car idled like it was in neutral.luckily i had a friend nearby that could steer my car while i pushed it out of the parking spot.the forward gears work so i was able to go forward. Now the reverse works off and on, but i am afraid that it is going to go for good soon.i have been unable to fix the failure yet because i don't know exactly what is causing the problem (atf fluid, transmission, etc.).
I have a 2000 bmw 323i.this is my family's only source of transportation.a few days ago- it quit going in reverse.i took it to the dealership.they wanted just under $6,000.00 usd to replace it.the car is only work about $9,000.00.the tech said that this is a very common problem with this car with this transmission.after doing some research- i found out i wasn't alone.this is the number one issue among many.i normally don't complain- but i have a family of 4, a wife, 7 year old son, and a 8 month old daughter- and can not afford to basically pay what would be almost what the car is worth (i could buy another car for $6000).the car drives perfect.it just will not go into reverse.i have to push it in reverse-which i can do- however my wife with an eight month old can not.i would like the nhtsa to do something about this please.we have no money to fix this.the is an obvious problem that many have.
Reverse transmission on my 2000 bmw went out with only 65k miles.i asked bmw if there was any record of this and they said none.i then found noreverse.org.this is a web site with over 1000 complaints of the same issue for the same part on the same cars make and model.bmw charged me $100 to look at the problem.then gave me an est of $6k to $8k to repair it.they game me no other option.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i.while driving 2 mph, the vehicle would not move when shifted into reverse only moving forward.the mechanic stated that the transmission failed.as of october 5, 2007, the dealer and mechanic had not repaired the vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 58,900.updated 12/12/2007 the consumer stated car lurched forward into another vehicle. The consumer stated the amount of repairs would be $5,000. Updated 12/12/07
Started my bmw 323i 2000 one day (132,000 miles on it) and it wouldn't go in reverse.drives forward ok, but will not go in reverse. Brought it to the bmw dealer and they want $7000 to replace the transmission.
Last week oct 1 park my car at work, after work i tried to back up the car and no reverse.forward gears all work.had to ask two of the coworks to push the car out of the stall.since that incident i lost the reverse gear on three occasions on a total of 6 short driving trips.one time of the three occasions i hit another car when i shifted to reverse but it didn't engage and rolled down the hill hitting the car that's 20 feet behind me.
Out of no were transmission stop working in reverse, this seems to be a very common problem due to very poor cast part in the transmission .cost to fix mine@$2200.
In the middle of a 3-point turn, vehicle was shifted into reverse. Vehicle shuddered and the reverse gear failed. Given that my car would no longer operate in reverse, i was trapped in the middle of oncoming traffic. Of course, i was involved in a collision because i was unable to move my car from the roadway.this is a common and widespread issue regarding reverse gear failure. Bmw is aware of the problem. This transmission is produced by gm, and is installed in cadillac cars as well (for which a recall was issued). No recall has been issued by bmw.
The car is a 2000 bmw 323i with 34,000 miles. There were no problems with the car/transmission prior to the reverse gear suddenly failing to engage while the car was in traffic and needed to be reversed to get out of the way of oncoming cars. The reverse gear continues to fail, although there are no problems driving forward. Dealer states the transmission must be completely replaced to fix the problem. Similar reports of transmission & reverse gear failure specific to 2000 bmw 323i listed here and other forums.
Transmission would suddenly not go into reverse.seems to be a known problem.i've heardthere is a tsb613552 on this problem but can't get my hands on it.vehicle always serviced by bmw.only has 68,000 miles and taken care of like a baby.bmw totally uncooperative and arrogant.web site www.noreverse.org shows how widespread the problem is.
2000 bmw 323i series failed to go into reverse.numerous complaints involving this year only found on consumeraffairs.com leading me to believe a recall wasappropriate.all incidents were identical and happened with as low as 30000 miles.
Suddenly and without warning, reverse gear on my 2000 bmw 323i would not work - no noise, no warning. Forwards gears all work fine.
On 7/23/08 my 2000 bmw 323i with 78,000 miles in excellent condition refuse to move in reverse.i had a mechanic across the street from my office take a look at it and said the transmission needed to be replace.i have well maintained my car and was shocked that there were no problems leading up to this.it just refused to move.i did call bmw at the request of my mechanic to see what they could do for me without the warranty.i googled my information and was shocked to find that this was an ongoing problem with my year and make of the car....even some people put the date of purchase such as 7/2000 which was my exact date.odd that there are so many 323i's with the same problem......won't move in reverse.the gentleman at bmw said he heard nothing of this problem and would do some research and get back to me.he did within the hour and said no such problem existed and told me it would cost me $5800 for a new transmission.there has to be some justice done here.these companies can not be supplying faulty materials and be expecting the consumer to pick up the tab because of their sloppiness.i feel very ripped off by bmw whom i have said numerous times that this is one of the best cars i have ever owned.......i now know they are not fair players.they should fess up to their mistakes.
2000 bmw 323i will not move when in reverse gear.the car behaved as if it was in neutral. There was absolutely no other trouble, warning light, etc. Leading up to this failure. The car wasvery well maintained and serviced by bmw authorized dealers, has 66000 miles and wasvery gently driven.this problem has been faced by literally hundreds of 2000 bmw 323i owners in the last year on cars between 60,000 and 70,000 miles; please see attached link: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.html.i requestedyou to investigate thisproblemwith bmw with the objective of determining if a manufacturer'srecall waswarranted.
My 2000 bmw 323ci no longer shifts into 'reverse". Almost 93,000 miles.
My 2000 323ci transmission no longer works in reverse.after searching the internet i realized this is a very common.my car only has 80k miles and has always been maintained.i'll be speaking to a lawyer next week after i compile as much information as possible.will this transmission ever receive a recall?
I parked to go inside of a bmw service center to buy a window regulator. When i came back out to leave i put my car in reverse and the car would not back up. I pushed my so called luxury car out of my parking space and drove home. I still have no reverse gear, guess i should start looking for a new transmission like the other hundreds of upset bmw customers with this problem.
I own a 2000 bmw 323i and have encountered the infamous "no reverse" issue as has been experienced and reported by many folks now (see http://noreverse.org).this stems from a faulty reverse drum in the transmission and should be fixed by bmw as it really does appear to be a common failure.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i with 132k miles on it. Like everyone else who's reported this issue, my reverse gear suddenly stopped working when i was trying to back out of my parking spot. No dash warning lights or any other audible indicators of failure. It was like the car was in neutral when i tried to go into reverse. Drive works just fine, but i am very disappointed in this sudden failure of the transmission.
I've owned my 2000 bmw 323i for over 5 years now (bought it used) and it's been a superb car.i maintained it perfectly with oil changes on time, and it was in pristine condition.despite my attention to detail, a few days ago, the reverse simply stopped working.we took it to shop and they said it was internal transmission and it happened a lot with bmws between 1999 and 2001, and bmw didn't admit there was a problem.i now have to pay a lot of money to get this fixed and am very upset with bmw right now.i visited several sites where people all over the world have had the same problem as i, and bmw doesn't admit the problem.i'm writing this so that bmw can persuade me to buy another bmw in the future as i definitely will not ever buy another one after this incident.i"m very let down with bmw and it's ultimate driving machine.
No reverse gear.no warning.
My 2000 bmw 323i (95,000 miles) would not shift into reverse. Took it to bmw dealership to find out what the problem was. The dealership said it was the transmission and it would have to be replaced, costing $6000. Did some research on the internet and was surprise to find out that the reverse gear failure is a common problem with the bmw cars during my year. Read thousands of complaints from bmw customers with the same reverse failure problem. The company, bmw, is aware that this is a common problem, possibly a defect, and offers no alternate solution other than to replace the entire transmission at a very costly price when the only problem is the reverse gear and everything else works fine. Knowing that i am not the only one suffering with this expensive problem i feel that the bmw should stand by the quality of their product. It does not make sense to purchase a new transmission, as this is our only recourse according to the dealership, when the reverse failure will more than likely happen again! thank you very much.
The reverse gear in my 2000 bmw 323i has failed.
Automatic transmission failed to engage in reverse on a hill within 2 feet of another car.
The automatic transmission failed on my 2000 bmw 323 wagon, after having traveled only 66,151 miles. The transmission will not go into reverse. I purchased the car as a certified pre-owned bmw in 2002 from winlsow bmw of colorado springs, co.the car has always been garaged and professionally serviced.following the reverse transmission failure, gault bmw of endicott ny (nearest to me now) offered that there were no "open campaigns" to fix the defective transmission and estimated (over the phone) that the repair would cost between $4,000-6,000 at their dealership.gault bmw's service manager recommended a specific local independent transmission repair shop as a cheaper alternative. The repair cost me $3,246.18.i was without the use of the car from 13 dec 08 to 14 jan 09.
For no apparent reason, my 2000 bmw 323i, which had about 35,000 miles on it, suddenly could not go into reverse.i took it to a repair shop which specializes in bmws and they told me this was a common problem and that i had to replace the transmission.so i did; it cost almost $5,000.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i.when the contact shifted the vehicle into reverse, it failed to move.the vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the transmission failed.a local mechanic made the repair.the powertrain was unknown.the current mileage is 29,000 and failure mileage was 28,000.the consumer questioned would like to know why bmw will not admit to the defect with this specific vehicle that has been on the road for the last 4 years? updated 08/07/07
Transmission will not go into reverse.
Automatic transmission failure when attempting to move in reverse.automobiledoes not respond to reverse, however, vehicle has no problem in forward gears.
I own a 2000 bmw 323i and it has a little over 100k miles.the automatic transmission will not go in reverse.i have read reviews all over the internet.there are thousands of people having this same problem.apparently because bmw produced their 3 serious car with a gm transmission and didn't have the right lasting materials.this should be fraud and bmw should be held liable for this problem.
Without warning reverse gear failed on my 2000 bmw 323i.
2000 bmw 323i transmission reverse gear failed.attempted to put in reverse but no gear.a quick search of internet reveals literally dozens if not hundreds of e46 model series bmw owners complaining of the same thing.no reverse or total transmission failure.repair facility recommends complete transmission replacement or rebuild.
One day in the month of october 2008 my 2000 bmw 3 series with over 100k miles would not reverse, although it would go into drive and move forward. Later that day i was able to put the car in reverse and it moved backwards, then hours later when i put the car in reverse again it did not work. This occurred intermittently until a week later it would not go in to reverse at all. The vehicle was evaluated by a bmw specialist, who stated that it needed a new transmission because the reverse gear did not work. There's no known reason why this happens, it just does. This is a defect in the design. I was quoted over $6000 to replace my transmission, and i have parked my car since then, yet i make a car payment every month.
Just yesterday my reverse went out on my wife's 2000 bmw 323i without warning.after doing a bit of research i am shocked to find that this is a common problem for bmw's of this era.this car only has 62,000 miles on it and has been cared for extremely well.i was also shocked by the amount of complaints associated with this problem and that bmw chooses to do nothing about it in the form of a recall.i have been a proud bmw owner and was a huge fan of the product.lexus/infiniti here i come.let's hope that bmw does the right thing and helps those of us suffering from a sub-standard product.
2000 bmw 323i with 93,000 miles. Without warning the reverse stopped engaging (like it is neutral).the vehicle continues to be fine in the forward gears. After checking with several friends and the bmw enthusiast website i have found this is a pervasive problem with this years model. This transmission and the cars it is installed in should be recalled.
The reverse on my 2000 bmw 323ci went out yesterday. The 1st 2nd and 3rd forward gears all work perfect but the reverse gear won't engage.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323ci(na). The contact stated the gear shift selector would not shift into reverse. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired and the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 147,000.
I am the original owner of a 2000 bmw 323i with 93k miles. My car has never missed a servicing. Yesterday, while parked, it would not go in reverse. There was not warning that anything was failing. I took it to an authorized bmw specialist, and they told me the transmission failed. They quoted me a price of $5,520 to install a rebuilt transmission from bmw. I have read online of hundreds of very similar complaints, especially with bmw 2000 323i. I am seeking information on the class action lawsuit settled in nj in 10/08, mdl 1922. Bmw has known about this problem. Apparently, the transmission was built by gm. The same transmission was installed in the cadillac. When the same problem occurred, gm recalled all the cadillac's. Bmw should do the same thing. A transmission not going in reverse is a major safety issue. Please help!
2000 323ci has 94,000 on the dot (less than 10k per year put on it), all maintenance done as required/scheduled. Yesterday, 12/05/09, i drove the car all day without any indication of a problem and last night i got in the car, put it in reverse, and it tried to back up then acted like it was in neutral. Managed to get the car out of the parking spot and it drove forward just fine. I got the car home, attempted to back up again and it tried to back up 2 or 3 times then acted like it was in neutral again! repairs will be between $2000-$5000 for a car that was immaculately kept. Apparently this is a known concern by bmw and they refuse to offer assistance to vehicle owners.
2000 bmw 323 csi with 81,000 miles. Sudden and complete failure of reverse gear no warnings.other gears appear unaffected. Car appears to be in neutral when in reverse, engine revs with no effect.suggested repair: replace entire transmission for a cost of $6,700.
My daughter has an 2000 bmw 323i, she got into it to go to class and it will not go in reverse.i know this is not new, just that the nhtsa and bmw are acting as though it has never happened before.it is shocking how many times this has been reported and nothing is being done about it.
Please site noreverse.org for a full list of complaints.right before my car hit the 100,000 mile mark my reverse went out. It will still go into reverse however the car will not move.
We bought a 2000 bmw 323i which currently only has about 66,000 miles on it. The car will shift into reverse, but will not actually move backwards. It just sits there revving. The car will drive forward, but not backwards. We were told that the transmission and the transmission thermometer needs to be replaced for a cost of $4500.00. We've done all the necessary maintenance on this vehicle. I've searched the web and found many other complaints about the same issue. I filed a complaint with bmw, but of course, they're not taking responsibility. These cars should have been recalled to replace the transmission.i was stranded at work when the car broke down. Now, i'm without my car and also don't have the extra money to put towards a repair of $4500.00. For a high end car, this is unacceptable. This will most be my first and last bmw purchase.
The transmission failed to perform in reverse.it simply acted as if it were in neutral.it was very scary and upsetting to have this happen, especially where and when it did.i was stuck and had to have reverse to leave the location where i had taken my daughter.only with the assistance of two (2) men was i able to get the car where i could use the forward gear to move ahead.this manual maneuvering of this car put the men helping me, it put me, and it put others on the roadway at risk while this maneuvering was being done at, obviously, very low speeds.bmw has not offered any substantial help with my plight, nor do they confirm all of the other complaints about the problems with the bmw 3 series, 2000 and later.part of the litany of the same complaint can be found on the consumeraffairs.com blog site.i'm confident bmw is aware of these complaints.they simply try to look away and ignore us all.
Bought a used 200 323i bmw with a steptronic transmission about a moth or two ago which would be in the time from of about may to june of 2008.it was in immaculate condition everything ran fine perfect well taken care of, drove to work one day tried to put my car in reverse and it just acted like it was in neutral.i have red a lot of complaints online about the same identical problem that everyone else is having with their 200 323 bmw's.i was referred here by a forum that had over a hundred complaints about my problem so i am sending one to you guys in hope of making a difference and helping push a recall for the 2000 323 bmw transmissions.
My 2000 323i bmw won't go into reverse.
Backing into parking spot found that i could not go into reverse. Was stuck in the middle of a street! just got told that they need to replace the entire transmission for $6000. Bmw no reverse problem.
2000 year model bmw 323i reverse went out at 79,000 miles.no warning, drive still operates fine.no help from bmw. I have had numerous vehicles over 33 years of driving and only one failed before 100,000 miles, a dodge grand caravan and dodge took care of it.this is sad - there should be recourse. I am not asking for a free replacement since the vehicle is 9 years old but there should be some type of support from bmw.this is supposed to be a sealed unit with "german engineering" no wonder they lost the war.
I am the original owner of 2000 bmw 323i with 109k miles. One fine day the reverse gear on the car just stopped working without any warning or noise. I took the car to the bmw dealership who did the diagnostic and told me there's a transmission failure and that the new transmission will cost $5,880. I then went online and found a site "noreverse.org" and was shocked to see numerous bmw owners reporting the same issue. I called bmw customer relations and they refused to offer any assistance nor did they own up to the problem, stating that it's out of warranty. Given the number of complaints received by nhtsa (175 as of september 5th, 2010 for "2000 323i" under the category of "power train automatic transmission")and a huge number of complaints listed on "noreverse.org" and other consumer sites, bmw ought to have done a recall of these defective transmissions (zf5hp19) and set an example for a responsible global brand they stand for.
I own a 2000 bmw 323i with 160,000 miles on it. I just purchased the vehicle 1 1/2 ago. Since my purchase i have had several issues with it . First the alternator went-cost 520.00, then leak in radiator, replaced several hoses plus repairs $ 500.00 and now on 01-29-2010, i was doing errands , came out turned my car on , put the car in reverse and noticed that it wouldn't , it just acted like it was in neutral.... Now i towed car and called several repair shops cost in the range of $2500-6000 for either rebuilt, new or from a salvagedcar yard. I had no indication, no noise or sound out of the ordinary. The car did drive forward. I need help.
I have a yr 2000 bmw 323i sedan. At approximately 103,000 my car has failed to go into reverse. As i have done my research about this failure on the internet, i've noticed that this is a common problem with a lot of people who's owned or currently own this make, model, and year of this car.
Problems; no torque at low revs; erratic acceleration; smell of hot oil; whine from front of car; car rolls downhill as no torque unless revved to 3000+. Car undriveable - dealer replaced transmission, o-rings and etl
Reverse stops working without warning.
I own a 2000 bmw 323i with only 21,500 miles on it. The car is kept in an interior garage and driven mostly within the city. Until two days ago, i had no problems with the car and never had any indication that there was a problem with the transmission (or anything else for that matter).i backed out of my garage, drove to a store, did my shopping and returned to the parking lot.i turned the ignition on as normal, put my foot on the break and shifted the gear into reverse and tried to back out, but the car would not move.it acted as if it were in neutral but the dashboard clearly read that i was in reverse.there was no warning, no indicator light went on, no noise or sound out of the ordinary. The car did drive forward, so i waited until the cars in front of me left and drove my car to the bmw dealership where i got the car.they refused to give me an estimate of a transmission repair or replacement until i gave them $300 to perform a diagnostic test.i declined and brought it to a local transmission shop near my home.the mechanic removed a pan and showed me the liquid which was blackish in color.he said that it had aluminum powder in it, indicating that something inside probably broke and caused burning.i am currently in the process of deciding what to do next: either get the transmission replaced or have it rebuilt.bmw of north america and the bmw dealership i got the car from refuse any financial responsibility for the repair.
Bmw 2000 year 323 does not go in reverse. Global imports bmw in atlanta says that the repair will cost $5800. This is a know defect by bmw but they will not recall this defective car or repair this transmission.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i. On february 2010, one morning i work up to go to work. I tried to back my car put from my drive way but my car did not want to reverse. The car just stayed like if it was on neutral. I gave it some gas and all i head was just the engine revving, but the car would not reverse. My dad later looked in to it and found out that when the car drove forward it had no issues what so ever. It was only when the car reversed. I looked in to repairs for this issue and every where i go i get quoted in the range of 4000-6000 for a new transition. I am a college student i don't have the money to repair this issues. Specially after i found out that thousands of other bmw owners have the same issue. I strongly believe that a recall should be made for these transmissions. It is very dangerous and not safe at all. I rarely try to drive my car but in many occasions i have no choice. In one occasion where i was on a down hill street i was stuck because my car would not reverse. I had to call a tow truck to help me. I strongly encourage you to look at other testimonies from other bmw drivers on the website of noreverse.org i hope that you really look in to this issue. I am really disappointed that bmw has not taken the responsibility to take care of this matter. I hope you can help me.
I currently own a 2000 bmw 323i with 49,000 miles and was just told today that my transmission needs to be replaced, to the tune of $5200. I took my car to the dealership because i was unable to reverse. It appears that this is a recurring problem with several owners of this very make and model based on other complaints filed on different website. Naturally, my warranty ran out last summer at 36,000 miles so i am unable to do anything there. I believe there is definitely a manufacturing problem here when a transmission is failing at less than 50,000 miles. I plan on contacting bmw n.a. To discuss the outrageous price that i have been quoted to see if they can help intervene or offer a solution.
Reverse went out on car @ 104,000 miles.told by repair shop that the car would need a $5,000.00+ replacement transmission.unacceptable.i eagerly await the pending class-action lawsuit!
Failure to go in reverse. No warning. 49,000 miles. Faulty transmission.
There were 50 documented transmission failures for the 2000 bmw 3 series automobiles. There are undoubtedly more, but the people just paid the $3000 to $5000 repair bill.there is no coincidence that these transmissions are failing and bmw knows about the problem, but won't do anything about it.
I had dropped my wife off at work after lunch and was backing out of a parking stall.i put the car in reverse, let off the brake and was watching for cars behind me.i went to give it a little gas to continue backing up and it revved up as if it was in neutral.i stopped, put the car in neutral, then back in reverse and still nothing.no gear or nothing.i drove home in drive just fine.i put it in the garage.i have tested it since and it does nothing in reverse, but drives just fine in drive.
Car fail to engage to reverse while stuck in an situation. With the zf transmission on the 2000 3 series, the reverse drum is made of aluminum and very easy to crack, each time it cracks, you are not able to engage the car in reverse at all. To have this problem fixed, you either need new transmission or i heard there is a new reinforced drum that fixed the issue, my concern is over thousands of people have the same issue and each time it costs 4 or 5 thousand to fix because of the faulty part inside the transmission, why are there still no recalls yet? this is a pretty dangerous situation when your car can't move backwards and you are stuck in the lot, please read my reference link, as this is my 3rd transmission. Thanks.http://www.noreverse.orghttp://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.html.
I have a bmw 323ci, year 2000.it has around 42000 miles on it.a few days ago, i was parked in my garage.i put the car into reverse and hit the accelerator, and the car went nowhere.it didn't shift into reverse at all.i pushed the car out of the garage, and put the car in drive gear.it went forward fine.i drove it to the shop and they look at it and said i need a new transmission.this will cost thousands.on a bmw with only 42,000 miles on it!my research indicates that this is a problem that is happening to a lot of people with the same car and model year.it is clearly a manufacturer's defect which ought to be the subject of a recall.
Reverse went out in my transmission on my 2000 323i yesterday, had it diagnosed at a repair shop and said that it would need to be replaced, i only have 52,000 miles on it. After reading on the internet i see that this is a common problem that bmw denies. Why isn't there a recall?
I own a 2000 bmw 323ci for a little over a year now and i've had to put about $6,000.00 in repairs into it but all in small problems.last week, with no warning my car would not go into reverse. I went online to see how much a transmission would cost and to my surprise i found thousands of people with the exact same problem and in all cases bmw never admits to a faulty part and a recall on there transmission.i have always taken my car to the bmw dealer and have gotten my work done there but not this time.it would cost me nearly $8,000.00 to fix it there.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i. On about august 29, 2007, i was trying to back out of a parking spot, but i could not. The reverse gear in my car was not working.i took it to an independent mechanic and had to replace transmission with a used unit, costing me $2595. I understand this is a very common problem for bmw 323i.
"no reverse" bmw transmission zf shp19.
2000 bmw 323i sedan - cannot reverse.meticulously maintained car.no warning light came on.the car cannot reverse and i was stuck in a parking garage.was told by the repair shop that i need a new transmission.there are thousands of complaints on the internet complaining about the same issue for the same year and model.bmw needs to do a recall!
I own a 2000 323i w/140k miles.i pulled into a convenience store (head in).upon leaving, i put my car into reverse and nothing happened.i thought maybe i accidentally put it in neutral, but no.so i put it back into park, turned the car off and removed the key.i tried again with the same result.it would not go into reverse.drive worked just fine.there was no warning whatsoever.no lights, sounds, or indication that anything was wrong.i am really ticked off.i had to get pushed back and then i could drive off.recall please.
There is an intermittent skreech when in "d" mode on automatic transmission. From a stop, when accelerating moderately, there is a loud skreech when car shifts from first gear to second gear.car has been inspected 3 times & problem has been duplicated at 2 different dealers.bmw rep. Also acknowledges problem & has seen it before. Claims it is the "intake system" but no fixes are available!also said if a fix comes out, i might not be able to get it unless i am still under warranty!please help, i have also contacted bmwna & they have taken no action.also contacted 3 dealers, 2 of which have seen the car & duplicated the horrible noise.yet no action to fix it.your help is greatly appreciated.
2000 bmw 323i 54000 km's. Reverse clutch does not work.bmw won't acknowledge the reverse clutch issue and insists on replacing the whole transmission.
No reverse 2000 bmw 323i ... Hundreds of owners have had this problem with no help from bmw except to charge full price for a new transmission.
Transmission reverse no longer operational on 2000 323i bmw sedan.reverse acts as if in neutral.repair required:replace drum in transmission.cost over $1,900.
I was parked facing downhill in my 2000 bmw 323ci when i selected reverse to back out of my parking spot.the reverse gear did not engage and the car rolled forward unexpectedly striking the car in front of me.fortunately, damage was inconsequential (a few scratches/scuffs), but had there been a person in front of me, that person would have been seriously injured.the reverse gear has failed completely and without any warning.my bmw dealer says the car needs a new transmission at 60k miles!
Car was running fine then reverse just stopped working. Car can go forward but no longer has reverse. My mechanic diagnosed the car and i was told it has transmission failure. Also he made me aware that there are numerous of complaints and lawsuits on bmw due to this same problem.bmw should have a recall regarding this issue.
Bmw 323i sports wagon is not going to revere.this car has infamous zf5hp-19 transmission fail on the way to college.the car is 2 month old.
I bought a 2000 bmw 323i in 2004 that had been maintained immaculately. At 72,000 miles, the car simply would not go into reverse. My father took the car to bmw dealership closest to my home and they said it was a transmission problem and repairs were going to be about $5000 for a new transmission. Fortunately, he is mechanically savvy, and found a mechanic to repair the transmission for about $2000. After reading online that bmw will do nothing to help replace/repair the thousands of cars that this problem has occurred in, i have to say i am severely disappointed. What once was my "dream car" has turned into a nightmare.
As reported by many, many, other bmw 323i car owners, i too, have lost the ability to go in reverse.just like the complaints from people all over the internet say, the car just sits there when you put it in reverse, as if it's in neutral.you can rev the engine, but you go nowhere.and like the others mentioned, i've called bmw, but customer relations says they're not aware of any problem, and won't assume any responsibility since the car is out of warranty.it only had 69,600 miles on it when the problem occurred.a local dealership said it would cost thousands to fix it, and would be happy to make those repairs after i bring it in, and pay them $100 for the diagnosis.i've called 3 different auto repair shops and each one is very, very, familiar with the problem.one shop owner said the 1999 and 2000 model 323i's had the same bad transmission, and that he's repaired the same problem in every one that has crossed his path.plus, mechanics have told me that bmw has come up with an updated part to make the repair.so why would bmw make a new part if there is no such problem?plus, this is becoming a safety issue.i had to push my car to get out of a parking space, and it nearly ran over me.a recall should be issued before someone gets hurt if they haven't already!
Hello-i have a 2000 bmw 323ci. Recently, the reverse function simply failed to respond. There was no event that led up to this failure. I have read numerous (hundreds) of articles/comments on the net of other individuals experiences difficulties with the reverse function of this model car - related to the zf5hp19 transmission build. There must be some help to be provided for what is obviously a recall-worthy malfunction.please help. Andr bearfield
I purchased a 2000used bmw 323i with the sports package and steptronic.the reverse went out at 132k miles last night.i have seen a great deal of complaints and would like to recommend a recall.http://www.noreverse.org/complaints.html.
The reverse gear of my vehicle became inoperative without warning. The vehicle was always serviced in accordance with manufacturer recommendations at the dealership. There were no indications or warning prior to the failure.
I have a 2000 bmw 323i automatic. The reverse gear just stopped working. This seems to be a common complaint seen on many places by many people on the internet. Check http://www.noreverse.orgi had gone to work and when i reached there, i had to reverse the car into the parking at this is when i found out that my reverse no longer works.nhtsa: please ask bmw to do a recall as this is affecting hundreds of consumers who purchased bmw between 1999 and 2002. Bmw knew about these issue and chose to continue selling these vehicles without correcting the known issue. This is a serious flaw and an unethical conduct by bmw na.
My 2000 bmw 323i has 98.5k miles on it.after working perfectly fine it has now failed to go in the reverse gear.it uses an automatic zf 5hp19 transmission.upon taking it to a repair shop and talking to other bmw owners it seems this is a common mechanical failure in the transmission due to faulty workmanship.i service this car on a regular basis and take extreme care with it in all aspects.my complaint is in regards to bmw not issuing a recall on this product when it is common knowledge the transmission is faulty.the cost quoted to me from bmw is $5500.bmw has lost my business forever.
At 75,000 miles, the vehicle failed to operate in reverse gear.a search of the internet revealed many other bmw owners that have experienced this same failure.the solution was a >$3,000 charge to rebuild the transmission.
The car won't back up at all in the reverse gear. All the forward gears work great, but the reverse gear is pretty much like a neutral gear. The car just revs without any movement.
2000 bmw 323i transmission will not go in reverse.
Faulty transmission.
1.i attempted to put my car in reverse in a parking lot that was completely flat.2.the bmw 323i refused to go into the reverse gear, instead changing the car into the neutral gear.this is repeated every time i attempt to reverse.i must now push my car out of parking spots and avoid situations that would get me stuck.3.i chose to replace the transmission with a rebuilt transmission.otherwise i could have had the transmission rebuilt, replacing the broken clutch drum with a new clutch drum.
2000 bmw 323ci transmission just stopped going into reverse.forward gears work fine.vehicle has less than 75000 miles.
I own a 2000 323i bmw and it has stopped to go into reverse.apparently the transmission is to be blamed for it and the whole transmission needs to be replaced.apparently there are 60 pages of complaints posted on the consumer affair website that same year and model of car has had this continuing issue.
The shift plate indicator has been replaced once and it is again faulty.it gives a false indication of the actual position of the transmission.for example, the car can be in drive, but the neutral light will be on.
Out of nowhere my 2000 bmw 323i stopped going in reverse. Prior to that it worked just fine, just stopped one day. Drive works just fine, but reverse is gone.i took the car to my local bmw dealership and when i dropped it off on a saturday at 4:00pm they told me they'd look at it on monday and call me.the advisor told me based on the reverse failing it would likely be a transmission replacement needed. When asked how much that would cost he said another customer with my exact same year/make/model in the week prior paid $8k for his.we then came home and did research which has revealed thousands of other owners with the same year/make/model have the same issue and apparently this is something bmw has known about but is doing nothing about at all.i emailed the gm of my dealership the same sat evening i dropped the car off and attached many articles and websites highlighting the issue and telling them i planned to move forward with my own complaints with bmw na and online forums and local news outlets.today (monday) i initially got a call from an advisor telling me the car does in fact need a new tranny and that it would be $6500.later in the afternoon the head of the service dept. Called saying the gm had forwarded my email and that he would like to offer to reduce the cost to $4k for me. I told him i had to talk to my fiance and called him back telling him they'd have to offer more than that to get me to not move forward sharing my issues.i have not heard back yet (it is now monday evening) but i imagine someone will call me tomorrow.regardless of how my local dealer chooses to deal with me i do feel this is a very significant issue in that 2 service advisors at my local dealership acknowledge the problem and clearly the gm does too or she never would've forwarded my emails on. I hope someone forces them to do a recall (and reimburse those of us who have to fix our cars now) and/or a class action lawsuit!
Manual transmision won't go into 2nd intermittently, pops out of 2nd intermittently and grinds going into 2nd.have had it independently check and verified to be a serious safety issue.
My bmw 323i no longer goes into reverse.i read online this is a common problem with certain bmws and i'm wondering why bmw hasn't issued a recall since this is a safety issue as well as an identified common problem.the website i found other complaints on is:http://www.noreverse.org/complaints.htmlthe problem presently is constant - the car just has no reverse function any longer.i have not had it looked at by a shop as they want $550 to take the transmission out to evaluate (and that cost goes toward expense of repair but if the repair is unaffordable - it is too risky to have them do the evaluation and spend $550 for nothing).so now i'm in a position where i can't easily sell the car either since i can't exactly determine easily what is wrong.from what i read it is a problem with the d-g clutch drum that causes this problem and the only way to fix it is to rebuild the transmission.this same car about 4-5 years ago had faulty wires with the fan which would not stop running.this caused an electrical fire and $5000 worth of damage.
I am an owner of 2000 bmw 323i.it currently has ~115k miles on it.today (friday, july 13, 2007), i entered the parking garage at work and attempted to back into a parking space --- as i always do.i drove forward, then put my car in the reverse gear, but it would not move.when i pressed on the accelerator, it would only make an idling sound like it was in the neutral gear --- even though the lcd showed "r" (reverse).after a few attempts of trying to go in reverse, i realized that all my efforts came to naught.luckily, i had just enough room to "drive" forward and clear the car in front of me so that i could take my car to get repaired.come to find out, i need a new transmission.i find it very odd that my transmission would go out this early and it wouldn't give any type of warning.also, i find it very frustrating that there are cars that cost 1/3 of the price and provide better utility.this experience definitely has me questioning my brand loyalty.bmw surely isn't living up to its' branding message as "the ultimate driving machine" --- unless it specifically excludes going in reverse.
I have a 2000 323 bmw and all of sudden my reverse stop working for no reason at all i been up to date with my taking care of it and one day it just stop working, even though sometimes it does go reverse and sometimes it just doesn't do nothing, i haven't done anything to try to correct it because simply is to much for me the cost for it is 4,000 dollars and i just don't have the money to do it, i feel its not fair what bmw has done, with this problem that bmw 3 series are suspect on doing.
2000 bmw 323i reverse gear does not work. I started my car and shifted into reverse gear, and nothing happened. I had just parked the car approximately 1 hour earlier. There was no indication prior to this incident that there was a problem with the transmission.in anticipation of a costly and lengthy repair process, i began to explore the internet for options, and it is only then that i realized that this is a widespread problem that has occurred to numerous other bmw owners.i am not alone and bmw of na is doing nothing to address the manufacturer's defect. I consider this a safety issue.bmw has no maintenance requirement for this transmission. I am assuming that they think it is replace upon failure. Unacceptable, the part that failed is called the drum. A band beaks and the reverse gear is broken. They have modified the materials in the newer drums to alleviate the problem . That tells me that they are aware that the material they installed in my vehicle was inadequate. I have not repaired the vehicle at this time still shopping around for options. This is a safety issue and a recall is warranted.
2000 bmw 323i no reverse, no power steering.
Dealer has repaired this defect three times previously to this incident.replaced seat belt mechanism, wiring harness and module.
Mrs belt tensioner driver fault.online forums suggest a universal wire defect where the wiring is pinched and breaks from moving the seat.
Airbag light permanently illuminated - dealer replaced right front seat belt tensioner to fix?!
Seat belt light permanently illuminated - seat belt tensioner right front and left front both repaired/replaced twice
Contacted manufacturer, couldn't properly correct problems, car is defective, attorney general notified as well as bbb, attorney general's office recommended contacting private attorney.dt
The seatbelt does not retract properly and gets squeezed between the seat and door upon closing the door. We are concerned that this affects the integrity of the seatbelt safety clasp. Bmw saw the car on jan 11, 2000 and said they would discuss it with their technical engineers and reply to us. They also noted that the problem is evident on all the "new" convertibles. Bmw never responded after faxes and voicemails. On jan 24, 2001 we were promised by bmw executive customer service rep mr. Ray castro that he would arrange an appointment with a field engineer to view the problem. Bmw has never set the appointment and appears to be playing a game where we call and complain and they tell us they will get back to us --- and then never do. This gives us the impression that this is a huge problem for them and they are trying to escape addressing this seatbelt issue with the new convertible containing the "seat integrated belt systems".
A sharp metal bracket underneathfront of passenger's seat causessevere cut on consumer arm by reaching fromfront of seat. Problem was reported todealer and the manufacturer. Dealer removedseat and rapped the sharp edge with black electrical tape, and replacedseat. Asking nhtsa to look into this problem.feel free to provide any further information concerning this matter.

The drivers seat is a heated seat. The heater became so hot that it melted a hole into the seat, which is fake leather or vinyl. This could have caused a fire, distracted the driver, or caused a burn to exposed skin with direct contact. The seat also shows discoloration in other areas where it has heated too hot.
Dt: the contact's vehiclestruck a pot hole that resulted in deployment ofboth sides airbags, and the driver's head restraint.he took the vehicle to a dealership, whoreplaced the airbags.afterwards, vehicleexperienced a blowout of the driver's side front tire which resulted in deployment of the same airbags.no repairs have been made at this time.
2000 bmw 323i brakes made a weird noise and when in a collision the airbags failed to deploy. The air condition made a noise. Updated 12/27/06.

I brought my vehicle in to have a problem fixed with the sun roof and mentioned that i had a problem with steering the vehicle during braking at slow speeds. When i got the repair list back from the dealer i noticed that they had replaced a major portion of the braking and steering system. The service seemed rather familiar with the problem and didn't hesitate to replace all of the componets which leads me to believe that they are aware of a signifigant problem with these vehicles and have not reported it. I have been checking the bmw websites on the 3 series and have found that a large number of these cars have the same defect in their vehicles. The manufacturer is paying for the full replacement of the defective systems, but, only if you ask about the problem. They are not currently notifying individual owners of this problem to have this condition corrected prior to the complaint.
When applying the brakes in wet conditions pedal becomes stiff andvehicle makes a loud noise, causingextended stopping distance. Dealer has vehicle currently.

Car type - 2000 bmw 323cimiles when purchased new - 23miles when first incident occured 29,725 miles sept 13th, 2002miles when service call opened 31,018 - october 23, 2002i noticed a swooshing noise close to my steering column and subsequently turning my car became more difficult.this lead to substantial grinding/winding noise when i turned the vehicle.power steering then went out altogether and vehicle was towed to the nearest bmw service center (san antonio, tx 180 miles away).bmw center- san antonio replaced the power steering pump and other related components under warranty.this issues has reoccured four times, approximately 1 once a year and again on tuesday october 24th.the power steering pump has been replaced 4 times and it needs to be replaced again according to the service write up.now from the reoccuring damage, i have to replace other related components at my expense - $1846, since my car's warranty is expired.please help.joe ugarte .
Dealer claims bmw working on a fix for 4 months to magnesium alloy control arms and steering dampers. Cannot verify bmw is on top of problem.
Drivers side rear subframe is tearing away from body.this has been noted several times on this website already.
While jacking up the car on the front-drivers-side the jack point on the vehicle failed. The metal where the jack goes bent inwards into the vehicle due to rust. This part of the car may have rusted due to a water leak possibly from the sunroof.
2000 bmw 323 4 door sedan inside fabric separating from windshieldcolumn frame, front and back windshields. Glue is defective and bmw will not cover the repair. If fabric continues to lift off will obstruct view when driving causing a hazardous situation.
Rear subframe beginning to tear. Common problem that has been noted here before.
2000 323i bmw body failure at left rear subframe mount point.the following is a few other ppl who had same problem:http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=195602&page=23&pp=20.
Heard loud noises coming from rear end of vehicle. Upon inspection by repair facility it was determined that the rear drivers side subframe mount had pulled away from the body, a large tear is present in the body panel on either side of the subframe mount.repair facility indicated the risk is that the car may notrespond as expected in an emergency or evasive action.form would not allow me to complete vin, last character is a 2.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i. The contact stated that while accelerating, an abnormal sound came from the rear of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic, who advised the contact that the sub frame was damaged. The contact did not call the manufacturer or take the vehicle to the dealer for repairs. The failure mileage was 200,000.
Rear subframe body has separated from subframe mounting support.the chassis is no longer properly attached to the frame.the tied down bolts have sheared off.this is a major safety defect.
All passenger doors fail to open (even manually) due to a faulty gm5 (computer) or door lock actuator resulting in a hazard if there were to be a fire or accident.
Takata recall. There has been numerous issues with the integrity of the subframe of this particular model and year of bmw. It experiences rust issues frequently. I need to replace subframe do to this and will not pass inspection because of this issue. This has happened over the years, it has not been stationary or anything of that matter. It has been used as a daily driver, as that should not happen to a daily driver subframe, specially from a bmw.
My 2000 bmw 323i has sub frame fractures as defined in a class action lawsuit against bmw. In the settlement, bmw has agreed to inspect and repair all effected vehicles. The dealer told me my car was unrepairable and offered me a cash settlement well below avg trade-in value. I want my car fixed.
Both front doors leak water into the cabin when it rains or gets washed.both front floor mats get damp along with the floor board.water damage to inside carpet, floor mats, and any other components in the area. (electrical)
1) there were no events out of the ordinary leading up to the failure of the rear subframe.all driving was normal in normal conditions.2)cracked/separated rear subframe, failed due to engineering flaws in design and use of materials.consequences of this failure could be catastrophic and result in severe injury and or death.3)i had my car inspected by bmw na at my local bmw dealer.bmwna agreed that the rear subframe was in fact broken and they would not be willing to participate in the repair of this.bmwag (germany) has acknowledge this compliant and problem and had ordered a recall for this year the car was manufactured.problem is currently being corrected with a combination of welding and metal reinforcement plates.
My subframe is damage underneath the rear carrier. I noticed when i was driving i heard a loud knock in the back. It sounded so bad i went into an auto shop to have it checked out. They said it was a recall and to take it to the dealer. So i went to the dealer and they said it was not a recall but a class action suit. Meaning they would repair it but i had to come up with a vehicle for 2 weeks while they repaired it. I can't afford the rental, so they let me drive off with my vehicle in very very poor condition. I have heard of the subframe being an issue with my car and was wondering if it were a problem, why haven't it made the recall list. It will end up killing someone if it's not taken care of. Specially if a dealer is letting me take it back because they can't afford to give me a loaner car for two weeks while it is getting fixed (because it isn't a recall they implied). So here i'm complaining to you, were i hope god somehow touches you enough to make a few 100,000 people much safer by making this a recall. For it surly is unsafe as said by many mechanics (even the dealer ships mechanic said it was unsafe to drive it). But because i can't afford a rental with a new baby, and many bills... I'm still driving this 2000 bmw 323i and i will until i can either afford the two week rental or someone helps my situation. All parts are available, and would be replaced by the dealer at their expense (in other words. A big cover-up). But because it isn't a recall, they let me drive away because they wouldn't give me a rental in replace of the failed bmw.... I have the inspection copy from dealer stating below;campaignsubframe recall is duedamage found underneath rear carrier, requires bodyshop attention.if they are calling it a recall then why isn't it on the recall list? and if it went to a class action lawsuit, and lost... Why is it still not a recall if its happening to many of these cars, and a very big danger while driving? something needs to be done!
2000 bmw 323i.consumer writes in regards to vehicle sub-frame issues.the consumer stated it was a known defect. Bmw offered to pay 25% of the cost. However, the consumer requested they pay 50% of the cost.
Have been informed by my mechanic that my subframe is failing on the rear end of my bmw.he pulled a report saying that a lawsuit has been filed against bmw but no recall had been issued (i.e, a 'silent' recall).his words: "man you're totally screwed."my reading of the lawsuit is that there was a limited time to seek redress from bmw; having just found out about the problem, i'm having a hard time imagining how something that apparently is epidemic in 3-series bmws and can cause catastrophic failure (in one case, apparently locking up the brakes and causing the car to come to a screeching halt) has not resulted in a recall of model with mandatory repairs!again, i'm not a lawyer but my reading of the document my mechanic showed me seems to reveal an enormous dodge by bmw in limiting the time frame during which one can have them repair the problem!my internet search this weekend shows that there are many others with the same complaint, people describing loss of control of their cars, etc., and of course i'm not in the drive this thing anymore.it seems the serious nature of potential problems and obvious defect in manufacturing should warrant some sort of mandatory redress by the manufacturer.(my car has never been used in racing or extreme activities, just highway driving, mostly for commute.)had i not asked him to check the cause of the squeaking in the rear, my 1st notice of this could well have been a loss of control of the vehicle.
Bmw e46 subframes are made with a defective material.over time the subframe cracks.mine has cracked.
1: the rear of the car felt loose and sloppy while driving. But didn't perform to unusually.2: the rear subframe ripped out of the sheet metal it was attached to leaving a gaping hole in the underbody of the car, and rendering the car undrivable. The passenger side of the car sat about 1.5" lower than the drivers side in the rear. Also the rear sway bar was hitting on the rear passenger lower control arm, and also in the center on the rear differential mount.3: nothing has been done to resolve this issue yet.
My 2000 bmw 323 cic was shuddering when i drove it.i took it in for repair and they told me that the rear differential had broken away from the subframe.my car has less than 70,000 miles on it and has never been in an accident.the only cause appears to be a defect in the design or manufacturer of this particular car.bmw has recalled this vehicle in germany because of this problem but has not done so here.it will cost me $3,300 to repair the problem and bmw has not agreed to cover it under the warranty.

1999-2005 bmw 3 series has defective rear subframe mounts.my rear sub frame mount of the driver side rear has torn out completely causing the car to constantly clunk and creak.
Dt: 2000 bmw 323 ci - the rear sub frame mount tore loose from the car.took vehicle to a mechanic and he said this was a common problem for this year, make and model.while driving, it was making a popping noise from the rear of the vehicle, and that was why the consumertook it to the mechanic.this was the first time that had any problem like this with this car.the cost will be $2500-$3000. Too vehicle to dealer to have it repaired.the consumerdid research and there were no recalls on this car.
Clunking noise from left rear underside of vehicle. Has to do with subframe and members, i.e., mounting point where subframe is attached to tears away from the rest of the sheet metal that forms the underside of the vehicle.

While driving 30 mph consumer heard a loud squeaking noise coming from the front. Vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. Itwas taken to the dealer for inspection.
On my 2000 bmw 323i with about 100k miles i noticed a creaking noise coming from the rear suspension. Upon inspection, the drivers side rear differential mount has separated at the point where the mount is welded to the uni-body. This situation is very dangerous and requires immediate attention. The suspension should never separate from the body because offorces from the trans/diff. It is clear that this is a design flaw. I personally have a list of over 150 names with documented subframe cracking/failure of the e46 body years 1999-2000. The overwhelming majority of these have subframe damage at the same rear drivers side diff mount, in other words, out of four possible failure points, the rear drivers side is nearly always the failure point !!i urge the nhtsa to address this issue immediately somebody gets hurt or dies!
Consumer states the rear suspension cradle is breaking away from the frame.manufacturerhas been advised and sent out 2 different investigators to check vehicle.
Tire. No other details were provided.
Both left tires, front and back failed after hitting a minor pothole at 35-40 miles per hour. Both tires experienced sidewall failure with approximately a 1/2inch break in the side wall. The split was parallel to the circumfrence of the tire. (tiresize: 225/45zr17)( dot number:tire size: 225/45zr17 )
Vehiclehada flat tire while moving at 10 mph or less, causing bothdriver's sideoverhead andside door air bags to inadvertently deploy.dealer and manufacturerwere not notified at this time. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i. The contact stated that while traveling 65 mph, the vehicle traveled over a pot hole and the side air bags deployed haphazardly. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 02v223000 (air bags: side window) but was told by the manufacturer that the recall was closed and that the vehicle was never included in the recall campaign. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 198,000.updated 12/21/12*ljthe consumerstated that upon hitting the pot hole chunks were taken out of both left side alloy wheels. Also the two left side tires were blown out. Updated 1/7/2013
Having problems locking and unlocking doors! key will not unlock driver's door, manually or with remote. In order to enter car i have to leave one door unlocked. Can't even lock nor unlock doors from inside either. This is pathetic! there's a severe problem with this issue regarding the locks on the car this should definitely be a recall!
Takata recall i'm filling a complaint do to the letter i received in the mail stating that my vechicle make be part of a law suit
Vehicle appears to be stolen and abandon in front of my house. It has not moved in 2 weeks.there is no license plate and the vehicle is empty of personal property.
I own a bmw 323i sedan 2000.all of 4 window regulators have broken and required replacement.once the window shattered and glass fell into the car b/c the regulator broke.when i had the regulators replaced i thought they were being replaced with a non-defective part.however, today one of the replacement window regulators broke.i am concerned b/c of the history of the glass breaking.i have a child that often rides in the back seat and i am worried that she may get hurt if the window breaks on her.
The reverse gear is not working. I cannot reverse... This occurred with no warning and for no apparent reason.
Rear subframe body has separated from subframe mounting support.the chassis is no longer properly attached to the frame.the tied down bolts have sheared off.this is a major safety defect.

Bmw not honoring full term of new car warranty. Although i bought the car new at a dealer in august 25 2000 and the car had under the mileage limit, the dealers computers list the car as being retailed in april 2000 not august 2000. However i have and was given the bill of sale listing the car as new and retailed on august 25 2000. When i went in for service on august 7 2003, a dealer, prestige bmw in ramsey told me the information bmw has lists the car as retailing to me in april. Even when told i had paperwork proving otherwise, the service rep was unfazed. I have the documents to prove i purchased the car, as new from the dealer, the dealer being difeo bmw. The car did not even wholesale until april 2000 per the deliver invoice to the dealer. *ph

Throttle will stick irregularly without warning . Dealer has attempted to fix defect 3 times, but couldn't determine cause. Also factory representative came out to look at vehicle, but did not determine cause.

The contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i.the contact stated that the front driver and front passenger side power windows failed to close. The contact also stated that the engine rpms increased abnormally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis and the repairs were unknown. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 500.
Throttle control linkages broke while driving 75 mph. This caused lost of power to the engine/brakes and steering.
I drive a 2000 bmw 323i and at times due to a faulty center control module (most likely) i can not get out of my car.it will not unlock from the outside or inside, but thankfully i can roll down the windows if i need to get out.this is extremely dangerous if i needed to get out in a hurry.the bmw dealerships want to charge an arm and a leg to just possibly fix a problem.there are many others out there with similar problems.
Air bags deployed while vehicle was in motion. Recall for vehicle airbags in effect, however my situation was found to be unrelated to the recall. I advise the recall be re-investigated to include spontaneous air bag deployment.
In spite of hardly ever using the windows, i have had to replace 2 window regulators at my cost.dealer states that the regulators are not covered by the cpo and also states that the window regulators is a known problem in the 3 series and also in the 5 series.very unsatisfied with quality of vehicle.
Consumer states molding inside the windowswas falling down. Dealer fixedit twice, and problemstill recurring.

Window regulator broke, causingwindows to beinoperative.regulator has broken 6 times. Consumersaidit was amanufacturer'sdefect.
Window regulators have been replaced two to three times on all four windows.all repairs complete by south motors bmw service department except third repair on front passenger window completed by braman bmw.service advisor admits that this is a known problem on this model due to a bad supplier.the vehicle has been serviced 5 times for this problem.
Window regulator.left rear went out, and had to be replaced.window was scratched when assembly broke.
(1) there have been no events that have lead up to the failure.(2) the window regulators are failing on all windows.the repair shops who have fixed the regulators thus far have both claimed that all of the regulators for the bmw e46 will fail, that they've had dozens of visitors for this reason.--a) driver's side, front window - failed and fixed--b) driver's side, back window - failed and fixed--c) passenger's side, front window - failed (3) fixed 2 of the 3 that have broken so far.the fourth window (passenger's side, rear) is beginning to make the cracking noises associated with a broken regulator, as well.(3)
323i bmw 4 door, 2000.major problem with all my power windows going out.the service rep at the dealer just shrugs his shoulders and says "it happens".i said that four power windows to go out in six years is excessive.three of which are hardly ever used since i am the only one ever in the car.he replied that you don't buy a bmw to be easy on the checkbook.i said i bought one because i thought they were reliable.he acted like this happens all the time.6/20/06 right rearwindow regulator went out $394.16, 9/2/04 drivers window regulator went out $340.43, 10/27/03 passenger window regulator went out approx. $350, 10/27/03 sunroof window failed and they did a temporary fix at a cost of $264.54 and said it was not guaranteed.it would cost an additional $1665!apparently all the sliders were broken.i probably only opened the sunroof a dozen times in the three year period, this should not have gone out with such little use.none of these were covered under warranty since they all occurred three years after i bought the car new.i have had many other things go out in this car costing close to $10,000 to repair in the past six years.seems excessive to me.last time i commented on this the customer service rep said quote "it will only get worse from here".i will not be buying another bmw.
Wastrying to reverse n it wouldn't it periodically won't reverse until car warms up.window won't go up without manually pulling it up.

I am very concerned that the new bmw 323ci convertible has a dangerous design defect that could potentially put consumers in jeopardy.specifically, the reinforced window frame is slanted dramatically downward and the blunt top corners of the window frame are pointed inward, dangerously close to the heads of the passengers.despite other excellent safety features of the bmw, it wouldn't take much of an impact to hit the corner of the blunt window frame with your head (only a few inches)!the downward slant of the window also hinders an optimal driving view.this is a new design for 2000, and the previous bmw convertibles did not have this slant issue or the placement of blunt corners near the heads of the passengers.time is of the essence on this defect.bmw will begin releasing these models to the public in the may timeframe.demos are now available at the dealerships.i love bmw automobiles, and i ordered this particular convertible.i'm writing with the hopes that your office will look into this issue asap and help/advise bmw to take corrective action if a true problem exists before they release these vehicles in the united states in mass.i would appreciate any information you can provide.thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.i look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
