I received a safety recall notice - remedy unavailable from bmw. The airbag warning light has been activated on the dashboard since december 19, 2019.the notice read that "it is also possible that the airbag housing may explode and could cause metal fragments to pass through the air bag cushion material, striking the driver or other occupants which may result in injury or death." i spoke with bmw customer relations and was told that i could continue to drive the vehicle.i will not drive the vehicle until this problem is remedied nor should i be expected to. It has been more than five months since i received the original notice and there is still no date given for the expected remedy.i believe that bmw should provide me with a replacement vehicle until such time as a remedy is available.why hasn't a stop driving order been issued by bmw if this problem could result in the death of the driver? what recourse do i have?

Upon reading a wall street journal article dated september 4, 2002 concerning an nhtsa investigation into 1999 through 2001 3-series bmw's, i felt that my incident fell into this problem category.upon running over a pothole that inflicted damage to the front driver's side wheel, both side impact airbags deployed on driver's side resulting in significant costs to repair in terms of both dollars (insurance deductible) and only partially covered rental car costs for the one month it took to repair.no injuries occurred however.
While driving approximately 35 mph consumer ran over a pothole. This caused the passenger side frontal and side air bags to deploy, but not inflate. The cause of why this happened wasundetermined.the curtain and side air bags, headliner and seat belts had to be replaced.

Ever since i have bought the car, i have always had problems with the engine control module (ecm) on the instrument cluster. The ecm has been replaced twice already and on many occasions the dealer would just reset the computer so that the malfunction lights would go off. I am positive that this is a problem with many such e46 bmw 323i 4 door cars. The ecm is extremely sensitive to heat or cold and it goes off only after driving for a few miles. It can sometime take days for the lights to go off. Second failure in the e46 323i bmw's is the air-bag sensor under the passenger seat (passenger occupancy sensor). This has to be checked by the nhtsa as i am facing the same problem as many other owners of the car are. Bmw owner forums on the internet have many complaints about dealers trying to rip them off on such part replacements.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 30mph the airbag warning light illuminated.upon inspection, the dealership determined the airbag sensor needed to be replaced again.the sensor was replaced three times before by the dealer.
1999 bmw 323i problems with the air bag light coming on around 75k miles.computer for airbag was declared malfuction.air bags won't deploy in an accident if this problem persists.other problems include engine hesitation due to faulty oxygen sensors. Bmwna willnot assist in air bag problem.
Airbag sensor mat was replaced 3 times on passenger side (2/9/01, 12/20/01 and 10/31/02) as a result of the airbag warning light being on.currently 4/10/03 the same problem is occurring resulting in fourth time there has been a problem with this item.*nlm

We were driving down sepulveda blvd. In los angeles, ca at 7:30 pm. We believe we hit a pothole at 35 mph. There was no damage to the tires or wheels, but the side impact curtain airbag on our 1999 bmw 323i suddenly deployed. We researched recalls on our vehicle. We found the following:nhtsa campaign id number: 02v223000summary:on certain 4-door passenger vehicles, the side air bag system could deploy in certain non-crash impacts, such as when contacting large potholes or curbs at substantial speeds.consequence:this could cause the side air bag and head protection system to deploy without an actual side crash or impact severe enough to cause significant visible damage to the vehicle. Unexpected deployment of the side air bag could cause serious injury if the occupant's head is resting near the side air bag.remedy:dealers will recalibrate the central air bag control module to reduce the possibility of such a non-crash deployment. Owner notification began october 25, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact bmw at 1-800-831-1117.we contacted bmw at the above 800 number. We were told that based on our vin # that we were not a part of the recall. Being that our car is the same year, make and model of the car in the recall, and that the exact consequence did occur, it seems odd that bmw is saying that we are not a part of the recall.now, bmw wants thousands of dollars to fix the problem, which in all appearances is a manufacturer fault.
Vehicle was involved in a side collision, and side air bags did not deploy.feel free to provide any further information.

Side air bags inadvertently deployed, vehicle was repaired under recall 99v063000, dealer has been notified.
The contact owns a 1999 bmw 323i.while driving, the drivers side (door panel and curtain) air bags deployed without any warning. The dealer was not notified and the manufacturer made the contact aware of the nhtsa campaign id number: 02v223000 (air bags:side/window) recall, but the vin was not a part of the recall.the failure mileage was 140,970 and the current mileage was 141,000.
My central door locking system does not work, resulting in none of the passenger doors will not open when locked. So all passengers are trapped in the back seat and front passenger seat. The driver door can be opened from the inside and with a key from the outside.i have reached out to bmw and they wrote a report but said the 1999 year model would probably not be covered. In no way should passengers not be able to exit an automobile during an emergency. I can not drive the car with passengers. To repair this problem is estimated at $550.00. This happens when it is parked and motor on or off
The contact owns a 1999 bmw 323i. Approximately four hours after the vehicle was parked, flames appeared inside the vehicle near the driver's side dashboard. The flames were extinguished by the contact before the fire department that was called to the scene. A fire report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined as of yet but the contact believed that the failure was due to a defective light control module. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 182,000.

I am the original owner of a 1999 bmw 323i, purchased new and which today has a little more than 72,000 miles on it. 1. No specific event(s) other than normal driving conditions seem to lead up to the failure;2. The failure is that the right rear tail light bulb repeatedly burns out, requiring replacement, a failure that has occurred at least twice each year over the last 11 years. The consequences are that i have been received warnings and/or citations, some costly, when i have been unable to have the bulb immediately replaced. Other consequences of a financial nature include paying much more than i should have over the years to repeatedly have the bulb replaced. In addition, i have actually purchased this specific type of bulb, which i keep in my car in the event a repair shop doesn't have one on hand; and, 3. What was done to, temporarily (since, for the past 3 days, the bulb is burned out again), correct the failure: the tail light bulb has been replaced countless times over the years, at least twice a year, by different mechanics including those at the bmw dealership. I would like to add that in the last 11 years, not one of the other bulbs has ever needed to be replaced, and that where asked for "approximate incident date", i am listing this year's date rather than the first year i owned the car since this is the time of the report.
I have had a recurring problem with my 1999 323i since 4/30/2003 that the bmw service technicians cannot resolve at two separate bmw dealers in maryland, tischer bmw (where i bought the car), and towson bmw.the problem is that the check engine, eml and dsc (traction) lights all come on at the same time, and the car loses power not able to go above 40 mph (apparently goes into a fail safe mode). The lights then go out one by one after turning the car on and off about four times, and power is restored to the car. All is well seemingly until it starts all over again! note: i have noticed that it occurs when going down a steep decline section of road, coasting at about 40 mph.i can reproduce the problem at will, and usually when you can reproduce a problem, it is fixable.they charged me over $500.00 and did not resolve the problem (they put a new idle sensor on). They have since reimbursed me for this two months later the same exact problem happened again.this time i took it to bmw of kenilworth towson, they have had it on five separate occasions.the first time they reset some default settings and charged me $90.00, not certain if this would fix it or not. The technician stated that it may be a software programming issue, and a recall may be in the works.two days later the same exact problem happened again. They put a new mass air flow sensor on and charged me another $400.00 (they said that they were 99% certain that this would fix it) it did not!the very next morning while riding to work, the same exact problem happened again!towson bmw also supposedly sent the dme module up to home office to have it reprogrammed.this did not help either.towson bmw finally reimbursed me as well for the part that they put on which did not repair it.manager at towson bmw, have told me that they are baffled and cannot fix my car!*la

I own a 1999 bmw 323i. Recently, the check engine light keeps coming on along with the sign for the transmission (the exclamation in the circle). Then the power was significantly reduced which didn't allow me to drive over 40 mph. I took it to the bmw dealer near my home and after they ran the expensive diagnostic test they still weren't sure what the problem was. However, they said they received a bulletin from bmw telling them that resetting the computer for the torque and transmission would fix the problem. However, this was only a temporary fix, as it only lasted for one week. The light still came on and they still don't know what the problem is. This frustrates me that the bmw dealer doesn't know what the problem is. I know of several other bmw owners and they have the same problem. They all have traded their cars in for a honda or some other japanese made car, which i am considering too! however, i shouldn't have to resort to this, as i have spent a lot of money for this luxury car and would like to keep it. Nevertheless, i believe this is a manufacturing problem, as many electrical problems among others have been reported by bmw owners and dealers. A co-worker's had a '98 325 and had only about 70k miles on it and she had major engine problems and spent about $3500 dollars and the problem still wasn't fixed. So, she trade hers in for a honda.i spent about $400.00 and my problem is still not fixed. I am hesitant to pour any more money into fixing my car especially, after my friend spent much more and hers wasn't fixed, and when the mechanics aren't sure what the fix is. I believe this is an across the board type of problem with many if not all bmw's and the manufacturer doesn't want to admit it. Just go to bmwcomplaints.com to see for yourself. I would like an investigation into this problem and a recall to fix these serious problems.

While consumerhas been inside of vehicle trying to turn headlights to high beam vehicle caught on fire without prior warning. *ml
On the morning of march 22 my bmw model 323i caught fire immediatly after turning on the high beams. Black smoke started coming into the cabin through the dash and the air conditioner. Immediately after fire started coming in through the front part of the dash, giving me hardly enough time to come out of the car. Fortunately the car was not running at the time. My life was put in danger and it has been 5 weeks and i have not received any written information regarding what caused the fire.
My 1999 323i caught fire immediately after turning off the ignition switch once parked.there was a loud "snap", followed by large flames coming from around the hood and front wheel wells. The police and fire department arrived within 5-7 minutes (fortunately they are both located less than 1 mile away). Once the fire was put out, my car's front 1/2 was melted into my parking space. It was a complete loss and i am expecting that my auto insurance will pay very little; regardless that the car was in very good condition prior to this incident.
Numerous ball joint replacements.*ph the clock bulb, thermostat, convertible top tensioner and power steering intake were replaced.
Cracked sub-frame at 104,000 miles.dealership stated that it was caused by pot holes, i do not drive over potholes and take care of my vehicle very much so.i am not wreckless, and i have every maintenance record available as well as other warranties.i have had numerous issues with this vehicle including transmission and clutch at 75,000 miles, electrical issues and light indicators turning on for no reason, airbag lights light up at least twice a year, engine light coming on at least once a year, and finally a cracked sub frame.this vehicle has been nothing but cost and is dangerous to drive at this point.
At approximately 64,000 miles the engine began running poorly.engine would quit when accelerating from a stop unless the clutch was slipped and would misfire intermittently during acceleration.after a hundred plus miles of driving the engine warning light illuminated.a check of the fault codes indicated misfires on cylinders no.1, 2, & 6.a check of the ignition system revealed vertical cracks in the insulators of all six, 100,000 mile, factory bmw ngk r5 spark plugs.this problem was reported to service departments at both bmw northwest & bmw seattle.i was told by both that bmw would not help.*la
While driving headlights intermittently come on and off, and at times will not illuminate at all. Cause unknown.please give any further details.

The dash lights do not illuminate when the vehicle is turned on.nlm
1999 bmw 3 series and later has a defect that causes the rear and passenger doors to lock and they are unable to be opened either from the outside or inside.only the driver's door can be opened manually.remote key will not open doors or the gas tank flap.doors are locked and can't be opened in any way, either by the inside or outside handles, by the power lock button, or manually with key.passengers are locked inside can only get out by climbing over the seats and out the driver's door. This is caused by a faulty component on the circuit board that in hot weather malfunctions and locks all doors.problem will go away in cooler weather.apparently heat related, circuit board is located behind the glove box, under the dashboard and overheats in the sun.in the event of an accident or other situation, passengers cannot exit the vehiclewhen this situation occurs.this problem is well known by dealers and bmw car owners.
1999 bmw 323i doors will not unlock with keyless entry remote or unlock button inside the car. Passengers (90% of the time) and sometimes drivers side door (10%) will not unlock trapping occupants inside. Problem usually occurs when temperatures are above 75 degrees. After researching the problem i will be replacing the general module 5. If problem is not recognized by car owners, occupants of the car may be trapped inside during an accident resulting in possible injury or death.
Auto accident results in death of a passenger due to the inability to unlock car doors in an attempt to exit auto which caught fire short after an intersection accident, the passengers were unable to open door latch, unable to pull on door lock knobs that are flush to door panels and unable to press on main door lock switch which would otherwise have allowed them to exit vehicle quickly and safely. Three passengers exited through a broken window but unfortunately one was not so lucky. Bmw choseto ignore all requests for a recall on a "general module 5 - door relays" for 1999 bmw 323i's due to unwanted costs to the auto maker, unfortunately this time the cost was paid by a family who had to endure the loss of a loved one. Many complaints have been filed in regards to this door lock module yet no action has been taken to correct this default. Hopefully a police report, a death certificate, and letters from the victims family members will be enough to shed light to this deadly issue.
My bmw 323i door locks don't open. Once we are inside the car, doors don't open using the door handle.
On may 20, 2004, i went out to my 1999 323i bmw, parked inside a garage, where it is parked every night and most days, and the driver's side door handle is stuck in such a way that no one is able to open the door from the outside. If i want to get into the car to drive it, i have to get into the back seat or in on the passenger side and open the door from inside the vehicle, making sure that the door does not swing back even a little; otherwise, the door locks. This could be dangerous in an accident. Thus far, i have not had this corrected as the dealership would like me to drive there and cannot tell me how to fix this problem myself or send me anywhere nearby. The dealership is 30 miles one-way and i don't have the gasoline or the time. Another problem i've had with the car is that it will suddenly accelerate on its own without my doing anything, and i find it very difficult to control, usually having to apply the brake full-force. This is intermittent, so i haven't alerted the dealership.
My 323's door locks are experiencing occasional locking problems. The key will not remotely open the door locks. I can insert the key into the driver's door and open the driver's door only. Pushing the door unlock button inside the car does nothing (but you can hear a clicking sound). The passenger doors would open only by pulling on the interior levers twice. But sometimes that doesn't work which can be a potential safety problem.i can still open the trunk with the key remote and lock all the doors without any problems.i've noticed the problem happening more frequently during warmer days.i've checked bulletins with other bmw owners have same problem but with no solution.i've called the na bmw support number and they have never heard of this problem before.
Driver's side door will not open at all. Dealership is aware ofproblem.
Bmw 323i 1999i purchased this bmw today. Upon arriving home i shifted into reverse, nothing happened. Shut off vehicle with several attempts as stated in manual no change. Vehicle was test driven all day from meeting up of seller to lending institution. Upon arrival at home vehicle would no shift into reverse.
Car does not move in reverse (at).no prior warning signs.forward operation continues as good as ever.
I have been driving my 1999 bmw 323i for the past year with few problems. Today i got up to go on a road trip, and my car will not go into reverse. It has been serviced regularly, but there was indication of a transmission problem existing. According to the dealership, it will cost about $3,000.00 to correct the failure. A quick web search revealed that this is a fairly common occurrence.
The contact owns a 1999 bmw 323 i.while moving the gear shift lever from park to reverse, the vehicle would not shift gears.she had to manually push the vehicle into drive in order to switch gears. She was advised that the transmission was failing. However, no repairs were made.the failure and current mileages were 135000.
The reverse gear in my bmw 323i failed without any prior warning. It seems to be a common problem, as a drum in the transmission assembly is cast from weak metal and comes apart until it fails to compress the plates for the reverse gear.
My bmw 323i 1999 has a defective transmission.bmw says that we shouldn't change the transmission oil as it's a lifetime oil.... But i think this is what lead to having this problem.my car doesn't go into reverse and i've looked in several sites about this problem and have discovered that i"m not the only one that has this problem...http://noreverse.org/complaints_2007q3.htmlplease email me back as to what i should do...thx,alex
Entire transmission for 1999 bmw 323 ic needs to be replaced (estimated charge is $4600.00) - after only 60,000 miles. The onboard computer did not alert me of the problem soon enough.
I just read about the person who had the 1999 that had the engine light and transmission light go on. I have had the same thing. A mechanic friend of mine said that we should change the "lifetime" fluid and it might clear it out. When put on the computer it showed a problem with the 5th gear. We went ahead and paid to have the fluid changed. It was extremely dirty and definitely a good idea to change it....well it didn't rectify the problem. I have been told by bmw that i will need to probably have the entire transmission replaced...bmw is part pushers only, not mechanics.....my car is a 1999 and has only 70k miles on it...i have never had a transmission problem with a car with that little of miles on it. I had someone suggest not using the 5th gear so i am driving in s4 instead of "d". So far it is working just fine, however my engine light still comes on periodically. I agree that bmw should have a long warranty when it comes to transmission especially with all of the complaints i have read and price of this "most wonderful car". At this point i will never buy another bmw. I too plan to go into a toyota or honda.
My reverse on my 1999 323i automatic does not go into reverse. It initially worked then it would not reverse.
Drove into a parking spot a work and could not back out of the parking space once on reverse, the car would not move! after having spent $2,500 just 3 weeks prior on other repairs.
My 1999 bmw 323i would occasionally not engage in reverse. This happened initially without warning. After driving the car around for awhile, low and behold, reverse would engage. The dealer told me thatthe shift plate was not aligned and the car was thinking it was in neutral. After having that replaced at $700, the next day, same problem. Then the dealer said that it has to be thatthe transmission was gone. After having the transmission rebuilt at $2000, low and behold, 2 days later, the same exact thing starting happening. The car is in excellent condition and well maintained with 132,000. All of this started to happen on 10/22/2009. Bmw needs to recall the vehicle because this has happened with several owners.
Transmission locked to "limp home" mode. Can be reset by turn off and on the ignition, but it wont solve the problem and will occur again. If you run at 75/80 mph, and the "limp" mode is on.. The gear will be shift down suddenly and it will dangerously impact the speed of the car behind me. Luckily the car behind me have enough time to reduce the speed before it hits me.
I was driving my 1999 bmw 323i on hwy 101 in santa clara, ca. The car sundenly feels "weak". I immediately pull off the next exit. At the traffic light after the exit ramp the car stalls. I restarted the car and was able to move it, slowly, to a parking lot. There i found that a). I lost the reverse gear b). The transimission program light was on. I attempted to start the car again to see if it moves but the engine keeps stalling - i noticed that the transimission does not appears to be shifting. It is like starting a manual shift car from the 3rd gear.there was no warning sign of all these. It happen all in a sudden. The car had just gone through the bmw 60k mile service (major service) a couple of months ago.i have the car towed to my bmw dealer and there they pronounce the transimission dead - transmission locked-up.i am scared! i could have been killed that day!
I have a '99 bmw 323i. My car recently reached 100,000 miles and have started experiencing transmission problems. The car will shift to reverse but with no effect. I have spoke with other bmw owners and have found this is a recurring problem and cost 5000 dollars to fix. Im in the united states marine corps and cant afford to fix a problem like this. I i am being deployed and am worried that transmission failure while im gone will be dangerous for my wife. I feel like bmw should pay for the transmission repair because its their bad choice for choosing faulty engines. They vehicle is extremely unsafe and should be recalled.
1999 bmw 3-series transmission failure at 108k miles due to faulty transmission.
I drive a 1999 bmw 323i, today the reverse stopped working for no reason at all. Drove fine this morning, i pulled into a store to run an errand and when i came out the reverse was no longer working. I now read this is a common issue with this model but that bmw refuses to acknowledge this, this is unfortunate as i've always liked bmws but now i'm stuck with a car that is unsafe and expensive to repair.
Reverse does not work.the same complaint from hundreds of others can be found at noreverse.org.there is a service bulletin put out to the service technicians about the transmission but bmw will not do anything about it.
I discovered one morning that my car wouldn't go in reverse. It seemed like it would "catch", but it wouldn't actually go anywhere. I towed it to my regular repair shop, and they quoted me $6000 to replace the transmission.i found a transmission shop who quoted me $1600-$3500 to actually fix the problem instead of replace, so i had the car towed a second time over to them.shop called back and said neither bmw or gm will sell him all the parts he needs to do fix it. Bmw doesn't offer them (only whole transmissions), and gm won't warranty the parts if they're installed on a bmw. He also said he'd done some research on my concerns with the 1999 transmission, and that there were no technical service bulletins from bmw on it. There was a bulletin on the 2000 zl model transmission but not on mine (which he said was a 5l40-e model), so he doesn't think there's a widespread problem with this transmission.bmw started using the 5l40-e transmission halfway through 1999 when they changed the 323 over from the e36 to the e46 chassis. And although there is a new complaint on the consumer affairs page almost daily regarding failure to go in reverse, bmw has not issued a single service bulletin. This same transmission, however, was also used in the 2003 cadillac cts, of which there are over 30 technical service bulletins regarding the transmission. Two of these specifically mention failure in reverse.why will cadillac at least admit to the problem, but bmw makes no mention of it in a vehicle that's been on the road four years longer? i know a bulletin won't have any effect on my now $5000 repair bill, but i thought i had done my due diligence in researching the 1999 323i, e46's, and bmw in general before i bought the [xxx] thing.if i'd have known the transmission in this car was both non-serviceable and prone to failure, i'd have bought a kia. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Owner of a 1999 bmw 323i and the reverse gear failed.it occurs intermittently and continues.no action or accountability is being taken by bmw to correct the problem.this is a safety concern for owners faced with this situation.
Reverse mysteriously not working. Goes in and out.
I own a 1999 323i bmw. The car will not go into reverse.1.) the car's transmission worked fine. Then without warning or indication after parking the transmission would not go into reverse.2.)the transmission will not go into reverse. This problem comes and goes. The car cannot reverse.3.) no corrective action has been taken yet, i am just not driving it - too dangerous.
My husband was driving my 1999 bmw 323i, he pulled forward at a 45 degree angle on our street in order to back into our driveway.after putting it in reverse and trying to back up, the engine revved and acted as if it were in neutral, the reverse gear failed.it started working again the next day and worked fine for about 10 days.i was parked at a shopping center and when i tried to back out of my parking space, the reverse again failed.after a long wait, the person who was parked in front of me left and i was able to pull forward and drive home.the reverse was working again by the time i got home.it began failing more frequently, but usually will come back sooner or later.we took it to our bmw mechanic, he said the seal appeared to be broken and fluid had leaked out.he refilled the fluid and ordered a new seal.the reverse worked fine for 2 days, then started failing again.the mechanic informed us that since the reverse failed so quickly, the seal would not do anything to solve the problem and we would need to replace the transmission.after doing research on my own online, i see this is a problem that is widespread and unresolved.check the following website for countless testimonials on this defective transmission, they even named a website for the problem specific to bmw: www.noreverse.org.
The contact owns a 1999 bmw 323i. While the vehicle was parked the gear shift slipped into reverse on its own and the rpms increased. The gear shift indicator lights would not illuminate. The contact was able to engage the emergency brake in order to avoid a crash and stated she looked at the instrument panel to see what gear the vehicle was in. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 73,000.
I own a 1999 bmw 323i.recently, the automatic transmission warning light started to go on when i would drive my car on the highway.i took it into the local bmw dealership and it took about 3 diagnostic visits to determine that i needed a new transmission for $6k.my car had less than 80,000 miles on it.i then took it to several bmw specialist auto shops who explained to me in full detail the issue that this gm transmission is known to have.apparently the transmission fails in 5th gear and defaults to 4th gear, which not only causes it to drive differently, but can cause other expensive issues.after reading similar complaints about this transmission, i am extremely disappointed that bmw has let this go and has not issued a recall.i am disappointed w/ the poor quality of the american made transmission, and will never buy another bmw again.
1999 bmw 323i not going into revers at 90k miles
On november 1, 2000, i had a u.s. Air force appointment in the u.s. Pentagon in washington, dc. I proceeded to leave in my bmw 323i, which i lease through passport bmw in marlow heights, maryland.it was a dreary day, thus, i turned on the vehicle's headlights after starting the ignition.i placed the vehicle's gear in reverse and proceeded to back out of my parking space.however, the vehicle suddenly, and with great velocity, sped backwards.i immediately pressed the brakes preventing an accident. I tried this time to go forward and the car sped forwards back into the space i originally backed out of.i was quite shaken-up and completely analyzed the vehicle and my operation of it ensuring.
Sporadically and without warning since i have owned the car, new, the reverse gear fails in my 1999 bmw 323i. In addition, the car seems to, intermittently and without warning, rapidly accelerate on its own. When the car accelerates, i have to apply all the pressure i can to the brake pedal, and even with that i can feel the acceleration for a few minutes before it stops. As for the reverse gear failure, i have to shift to each gear once or twice before i can get the car into reverse, and/or i just have to take the key out of the ignition and wait for a while before trying again, and/or i have to shift to and from reverse to drive several times while in a parking lot, street, etc., holding up drivers behind me. In 11 years, no mechanic has ever been able to determine why the car has these issues, and most mechanics have been unable to duplicate the problems while driving the car. Thus, nothing has been repaired and the issues remain.
I own a 1999 bmw 323i. Sometimes the reverse does not work at all and on somedays there are no problems what so ever. I took the care into the bmw dealership and was told that i need a new transmission that would cost about $7,000. I am disabled and cannot afford this type of repair.i thought buying a bmw would be a great retirement car.i am very upset, especially reading on the internet how many people have the same problem and bmw does nothing to help. I have a 1997 381i that is down also. Have taken it to the dealership and my local mechanic.bmw has changed..i really need help ...
I bought a 1999 bmw 323i in january of 2000.it was a certified bmw.i haven't had much trouble with it.i have done typical maintenance, brakes, oil changes, new plugs, wires, etc.last year i noticed while driving at speeds more than 65 miles per hour that the rpms would move from 2500 to 3000, and a light showed up on the dash.i got to work and check my manual and it is telling me the light is a service transmission light.if you see this light, pull over, put it in park, pull the emergency brake, wait and restart the engine to reset trans.i took it to my repair tech and he plugged my car into his computer and it states that the transmission is slipping out of 5th gear.estimate for new trans is $4,000.for a rebuilt trans is $2,500.00.i don't have that kind of money for a 10 year old car.i have noticed in the winter months (cold keeps trans fluid thicker??) that it doesn't slip as often, and in the summer months, if i keep my speed under 65 mph, it doesn't slip as much.but it is a hassle, and i am just waiting for it to get worse.it slips outof 5th gear while on the expressways making it extremely dangerous to pull over and reset the car so that it will go into 5th gear.i don't especially like to drive it when the rpms are so high, it seems to be putting a strain on the engine, and my gas mileage has got to be decreasing tremendously, when it slips out of 5th gear.
1999 bmw 323i (e46)i didn't know my german car came with a crappy transmission made by gm in france.it failed after 89,000 miles and required a total replacement because parts are unavailable.this costs $4500.this is unacceptable and i'm sure others have the same problem because i've been reading about them on various bmw message boards.this should be considered a known defect and bmw is responsible for fixing this.they haven't taken any action to rectify this.

The subframe has ripped away from the floorpan. Through investigation this has been determined to be a very common failure on e46 bmw 3 series. This should be a mandatory recall by bmw to fix this issue. The subframe should last the life of any car.

I'm reporting the manufacturer problem with bmw on the subframes of the 1999 e46 323i.there have been many reports on this matter.

To have an inspector check the car on 3/21/07 and was told to get the car to the dealer.the dealer said we have to make an appointment, and to date, despite numerous phone calls, we still do not have an appointment.apparently, this is a common problem with 1999-2005 323i models.the car has been modified by thickening the metal on newer models.there should be a recall since this is a manufacturing defect.

After 6 months of squeaking & rattling sounds coming from the rear of my vehicle, i was driving on ca route 10 when i noticed the sounds were becoming more prevalent, as the car's handling began to feel loose. I reduced speed for the remainder of the trip, fearing loss of control of the vehicle, and upon arriving home had my vehicle inspected by beverly hills bmw, where they told me that my vehicle's subframe was damaged to the extent that the car was "not road worthy" ([xxx]) and i was advised to have the vehicle towed out of the shop.i contacted bmw customer service agent [xxx], who informed me that bmw had a program (that i believe is part of a settlement agreement of a class action lawsuit), in which they recognized there was a problem with some of the early e46 bmw models' sub-frames and offered to have them inspected & in some cases would pay for the cost of the repair. Bmw chose to deny me repair, citing that they had mailed me a letter about the program previously (that i had never received) & that the program had now ended. After having my vehicle repaired by an independent party, i contacted[xxx]to see if bmw would reimburse me for some of my costs of repair and car rental, seeing as how they were a fraction of the quote from bmw. She told me to forward my invoices ($2207.70 in total) to her email, which i did. Despite 3 follow-up emails, 3 voice mails, and one certified letter, i have received no further communication from bmw. The mechanical / structural integrity of a vehicle's frame, or sub-frame, should never be compromised by regular use. Having a defective sub-frame in a car manufactured in the last 80 years is wholly unacceptable and constitutes a need for investigation concerning a potential recall, rather than some manufacturer-controlled program with time limits that affect the safety of its customers.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The speedometer continues to malfunction and bmw has yet to fix that problem.

Consumer called complaining about rear passenger window problems . Manufacturer was contacted, and didn't want to do anything about it.
All door windows make a rattleing sound since around 10,000 miles.they have changed the motors but those also work for 2-4 months and the same sound comes back .the motors are over pressurised and if i let it down very very slighyly, the sound cuts down to almost 75%.the lining is also defective as it needs constant special german lubrication, which works about 2 weeks and that makes the doors glass quite.it"s very annouying.bmw has still not come up with a permanant fix for this.last week i test drove 4of the x3 2.5 as well as the 3.0 and 3 of the 4 already are making this noise with the cars having from 80 to 200 miles on them.i had theirmechanic and the sales people drive these car with me and they also aknowledgethe noise along with the moon roof defective sound for which i was told they have an open campaine.

On several occasions my windshield wipers have ceased working after i have come to a stop and then started moving again. This only seems to happen after the wipers have been in use for at least 30 minutes. The consequences are extremely limited visibility and difficulty even pulling off the road. In one case i had to drive over a quarter mile before finding a safe place to pull over. It was dark and mywas very poor. The wipers will start working if i turn the vehicle off and restart. I have reported the problem to the dealer on two occasions and they have not identified or corrected the problem. At this point i am reluctant to drive the vehicle if it is raining and cannot use it for any extended trip. I am no longer certain of the exact dates of the incidents. The date i have entered is approximate.
