I was driving the vehicle to work in long island city, new york and when i was stopped at a traffic light waiting for the light to turn green. The airbag light came on with a beep/chime to let me know it was on and about 2 seconds later my driver side air bag deployed from the side of the seat. There was no collision involved. I had to go to the hospital for treatment to cuts on my arm and shoulder. The vehicle had to be towed home and has not been driven since then. The manufacturer of the car has not returned any of my calls, the vehicle is out of warranty, and my insurance company said it is a defect so they do not cover the repair.since then i had the car looked at by a private licensed mechanic and he told me that there was an electrical short due to the design. The airbag harness runs in the seat and through wear of getting in and out of the vehicle the harness wore away and shorted it' s self out and caused it to deploy. With no warning this happened and now as a student and full time employee (my school is 17 miles and my job is 45 miles away) i really need this fixed asap.
A frontal collision with another vehicle at 50 mph. Upon impact, driver's air bag did not deploy, and the steering wheel came off the steering column. Neither the driver nor the one passenger was injured. Both parties were wearingseat belts.
Hit icy patch on freeway and crashed into concrete median barrier. Air bags for my wife and myself failed to depoly. My audi 2000, model s4 was totalled.

I own a 2000 audi s4, and i am complaining about the inadequacy of the anti-theft system.please see the following link:http://www.nicb.org/public/newsroom/whereismycar/top25bystate.cfm#njthe audi s4 is #25 on the most-stolen-car list in nj, based on quantity alone.to show the severity of the situation, let me put this into perspective:total annual production quantities:audi s4: ~6000toyota camry: ~300,000honda accord: ~250,000ford escort: ~150,000there are less than 4% the number of s4's on the road than camrys, accords, and escorts!yet, based on quantity (not percentage) of stolen cars, the s4 is #25.if the list portrayed # of stolen vehicles as a percentage of # of vehicles produced, then surely the s4 would be at the top of this list and probably atop the list of several other states as well!this is a serious situation that must be dealt with.keep in mind that audi/vw decided to not place an immobilizer in these cars due to cost savings purposes.they had the technology, as it is available in the 99-up vw jetta.this car is simply a high risk automobile to own because of audi's blatant disregard for the inadequacy of the anti-theft system.it literally only requires two tools and 2 minutes to break into the car, disable the alarm, and engage the ignition switch....done.scary!
Instrument cluster problem in 2000 audi s4the instrument cluster digital screen has all of its pixels missing or messed up. It is especially worse when the heat increases. This problem is dangerous to me because this screen tells me what problems my car is having, weather my coolant is low, headlights working, etc. It warns me of nothing if i cannot see it. I find this dangerous to me and could also cause mechanical failure in the car.
The pixels in the cluster are gone.the cluster displays vital safety information and i can't see them because the pixels are dead.i see this as a major safety hazard, because i don't know when there is something wrong with the vehicle.
The instrument cluster on all the audi s4s and also on vw loose pixels on the dash and it goes out, it is a hazard because this is a gauge that does a system check every time you start the vehicle, the car tells the driver if there are brake problems, engine problems, also if lights are out i.e. Brake lights turn signals, and also fluid status of the car. When this instrument cluster goes out or as audi calls it loses pixels, the driver does not know the status of the car which could cause safety and harm to the operator. It has been documented many times and has been replaced on my car over 4 times and is a common occurrence with other audi owners. Also the window regulator clip that holds the window breaks as well, audi and vw did a recall vin specific models of the beetle jetta and a4 but not the s4, the clip is the same design that is used in my vehicle. It also has been documented many times of failing and causes another safety issue, if the clip breaks the window will roll down unexpectedly, i.e. Causing the window to break which throws glass all over the occupants in the car and also exposes limbs to objects outside of the vehicle without knowledge. Many complaints have been made about this design flaw. I have tried to resolve these issues with audi multiple times and phone calls and multiple emails, regardless of the age and miles on my car, it is the same things that keep breaking, causing these safety issues. Both of these issues have been an ongoing problem from day one when these designs were put on the market. And replacing these items is necessary to ensure the safety of my occupants and myself. They need to be redesigned and revamped to solve these issues. Replacing them every single year is not acceptable. And even more so when someone's life is at risk, due to a bad and careless design.
I drive a 2000 audi s4.today the instrument cluster stopped working while i was driving.due to this i was unable to know how fast i was going or read any of the vehicle safety warnings, which my vehicle's diagnostic system displays on the instrument cluster.while speaking with the audi dealership i was informed that this is not an uncommon problem.i believe this to be an unsafe vehicle flaw that must be corrected.
Instrument cluster has pixel lines not showing.this is a safety hazard because it is difficult and sometimes impossible to see important safety information displayed by the instrument cluster.
My gauge cluster, the center display ismissing a thousand pixels and you cant read the important safety information on the center display and my radiokeeps cutting in and out and i feel it could cause a fire.
My information display in my instrument cluster have totally blacked out. It use to warning me if brakes are worn, if any lights are not working. Fluids need refill and so on...
Abs sensor failure on 2000 audi s4 quattro. Light came on at 114,213. Leading to the brake light to flash along side of it and beep every other minute when your driving down the road. Haven't corrected the problem because i've heard it cost 1,700. Some people don't have that kind of money. Many other people are experiencing the same problem on vw's as well as the audi in years from 1996-2001.
2000 audi s4 has problems with the gauge cluster .**nar*ccthe consumer indicated that the manufacturer has been aware of the gauge cluster problem for several years.the consumer request that the dealer replace the part at no charge.
Pixels on my instrument cluster began to get scrambled the car was serviced last month and because i could not read the warning light indicating low oil my motor was nearly blown. All warning lights come across that part of the cluster and no warning is viewable.
Instrument cluster failure.i have no way to view the important vehicle information on my cluster as the pixels in the display have failed and are now unreadable, temp, engine issues etc all appear on this screen and are unreadable.
The instrument cluster displaying the dashboard is unreadable preventing the owner from reading vital safety alerts or possible hazardous failures of the vehicle and/or engine parts/components.also rearview mirror has tinting defects causing obstruction of view.
There were no events leading up to failure.failure is center display in instrument cluster has lost lines, and goes so dim at times that i can't read anything on it. The display gives important info for failures in system, like brakes, headlights, oil pressure loss, etc. And if i cannot read/see it i wont know what's going on.
2000 audi s4 customer states that after about 3 months he developed gauge cluster problems*ccthe failure of the instrument cluster, resulted in the consumer not being able to read the fuel, temperature or engine speed.
Center display on car is badly faded with several pixels missing.most of thetime there are so many pixels missing it is impossible to readinformation.this is potentially dangerous as the display shows vital info about the car.
The contact owns a 2000 audi s4.while driving approximately 25 mph, the led indicators dimmed on the instrument panel.the contact managed to drive to his residence.the dealer informed him to purchase a new control panel.the vehicle was not repaired at the time, but the failure persisted for the past four years.recently, the contact noticed that the led indicators were too dim to assist with the warning indicators notifying him of a failure with the vehicle.the manufacturer and dealer were not notified.the current mileage was 90,000 and failure mileage was 45,000. Updated 03-06-09 updated 03/10/09.
The contact owns a 2000 audi s4.the contact stated that the instrumental cluster does not work in his vehicle.occasionally, he is unable to read the display panel.the dealer quoted him a cost for the repair, but did not provide any other assistance.the failure mileage was 100,000.
The events leading up to the failure were normal day to day conditions that go hand and hand with normal car use. The display in the center of the gauge cluster now has missing or dead pixel rows preventing the display of messages such as, coolant level, brake lamp malfunction, and engine oil level.
Screen in gauge cluster is going bad and is a safety hazard since i can not read important information for my vehicle.
2000 audi s4 purchased used and center trip odometer in instrument cluster.trip odometer is supposed to give you vehicle information so when it doesn't work you may not get valuable info that could help you avoid an accident or just a major car problem which could cost a lot to fix.
Bad instrument cluster display going bad..can't see any warning symbols if they were to show.
(1)events leading up to the failure:a.time.this has been an ongoing problem that continues to get progressively worse over time as pixels fail on the lcd drivers information display in the gauge cluster.(2) failure and its consequences:a.presently, the cluster is unreadable and thus information vital to the safe operation of the vehicle is not available to me.(3) what was done to correct the failure; i.e, parts repaired or replaced (and if old part is available)a.nothing yet.to repair the item a completely new gauge cluster must be purchased.
The 2000-2002 audi s4s have a very large problem with the informational gauge cluster screen failing. This is a safety issue as well an extremely common problem. It fails to alert you of things wrong with the vehicle like brake pad wear, taillight malfunctions, engine issues, vehicle speed, temperate (issue when its gets freezing). This is mostly due to relying on this screen for so many years. Manual checks can be done obviously but it fails without warning and that can be to late in many cases.
Information display is illegible...dead pixels.
Drivers information display failure. No way to display safety information, vehicle monitoring etc.
2000 audi s4 with gauge cluster problems**nar**ccthe problem developed in 2003 just after the warranty period expired.the problem has gotten progressively worse causing a serious safety issue.audi has been aware of the problem for several years.audi uk chose to replace the cluster free of charge in the united kingdom.the consumer is requesting that audi replaced the cluster in his vehicle free of charge.
The contact owns a 2000 audi s4.the center pixel display on the instrument panel does not properly display all of its features.the display began malfunctioning at approximately 30,000 miles and has been occurring ever since.the vehicle was out of warranty and the contact never notified the dealer of the failure.the current mileage was 76,000 and failure mileage was 46,000.
2000 audi s4instrument display failure. Dead pixels or lines do not show up making in hard to read display information.
Instrument cluster lcd screen that displays safety information (brake pad replacement notification, low coolant, etc.) has been gradually losing functionality making it harder and harder to read.
The center display on my 2000 audi s4 started having missing pixels several years ago.now it has gotten so bad that i cant even read the auto-check system.9 out of the 10 people that i know with this exact same make and model vehicle have this same problem.i really think that something should be done about this.
My gauge cluster, the center display ismissing a thousand pixels and you cant read the important safety information on the center display and my radiokeeps cutting in and out and i feel it could cause a fire.
Instrument cluster warning system is missing pixels and i can't see certain warnings to tell me if my car is having a serious problem or not.
2000 audi s4 with unreadable gauge and warning lights on the instrument cluster. Consumer states this has gotten worse and they are not readable at all. His brake pedal was soft and the warning light was unreadable.while driving, there was a loud beep followed by a constant flashing of a blurry display which the consumer could not read. The consumer later discovered the flashing light was suppose to show the brake level signal/pad signal level. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was determined that the abs pump had failed.
Dashboard/instrument cluster information screen has more then half of it pixels missing. I can not read any information form the car, for example( check engine, brake pads are low, temp warnings, door ajar. Push in clutch to start, etc. It started as just a couple of pixels missing a couple of years ago and just keeps getting worse to the point there will be nothing just a beep and i won't know why the car is beeping at me.
The contact owns a 2000 audi s4.the contact stated that he was unable to view the warning indicators on the instrument panel.the dealer stated that the heat from the vehicle caused the failure.as of september 28, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle.the failure mileage was 92,000 and current mileage was 105,000.
My 2000 audi s4 has many bad pixels on the instrument cluster that warns me about safety related items. Audi will not fix the item without charge.updated 02/15/11the consumer stated he had to 70% of the repair which cost $ 1,894.99 and it should have been fixed for free. Updated ivoq 02/23/11
Center instrument cluster display does not function.pixels which display critical vehicle warning information are out and illegible.problem is permanent and entire cluster has to be replaced to fix problem.
The display cluster in my 2000 audi s4 is losing visible lines: as time goes on, less and less of my display is readable as more pixels stop functioning.
The car was purchased on may of 2007. The cars instrument panel was working fine when purchased. All the cars critical information is displayed on the panel. A month after purchased i noticed that the panel intermittently fails. The car was running low on coolant but since i could not read the deploy i had no idea until the car overheated and the water pump blew. The repair alone cost me $800.00.mechanic stated that the instrument cluster should have displayed that the coolant was low. So i also believe this would be dangerous because all warning information is displayed on the cluster; brakes, temperature and oil.
The contact owns a 2000 audi s4.the contact stated that the digital instrumental panel display has lines across it, which prevent him from reading the screen.this is a persistent failure.when he took the vehicle to the dealer to be repaired, he was informed that he needed to purchase a new cluster for the instrumental panel.the current and failure mileages were 65,000.
Like many other people who own an audi s4 with 50,000 miles, i am having brake light issues. Only mine are much more severe that what i have read thus far. I took my car in for it's 60000, and had the mechanic check the brake light. Leading up to the repair, i had been *losing brake fluid* almost monthly. This should never happen, for any reason. But, my mechanic took three hours and discovered that the battery was leaking sulfuric acid onto my brake line, my power steering line, and my clutch line. He stated, "only a mechanical moron would house the metal and steal cables underneath sulfuric acid." consequently, i cannot drive my car any more and the repairs inlcude the taking out of the entire engine to get to the source, which may/may not be able to be fixed. Mechanic stated that this should be a recall issue, and that the safety issue on this type of design-flaw is obvious and certain. I expect audi will not cover this defect, causing me to shell out, are you ready for this, 2-3,000 bucks to get it replaced. [xxx] the man. I'll post more when i know more.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Posted comment earlier about battery acid leaking onto clutch line and brake line causing severe damage to both lines... Spoke with audi and they stated that the engine does not have to be removed for the brake line to be fixed... The most likely culprit of this leak is due an overcharged battery due to a jump or manual re-charge (note: according to audi, never replace the s4 battery with anything other than with an audi battery... Of course they would say this, but he was pretty convincing... 2nd note: i do have an audi battery in my s4, and i'm still having the issue... Audi may help pay for this b/c of that fact, but they haven't committed to it until further investigation). The total, according to over-the-phone diagnosing, was going to be b/n 1 and 2 thousand bucks at the dealer.
The anti-theft system on my 2000 audi s4 has no engine immobilizer, therefore making it not nearly as effective as it could be.there are many many thefts (especially in the ny,nj area) of s4s, and it is my belief that a lot of these thefts would have been prevented if audi had made the alarm in the s4 worthwhile (after all, we did pay for an anti-theft system in the car).i know that i would worry a lot less about my investment if i had a proper factory installed alarm system in the car.
Audi s4 auto alarm/immobilizer can be easily deactivated. Deactivation through punching a screwdriver through the drivers side door key lock, will automatically disengage the both the car's alarm and its immobilizer. So far, i personally know of more than 30 vehicles being stolen whilst using this method in the state of new jersey alone in the past year. I have personally had to take action through installing additional security modifications, risking nullification of the manufacturers warranty, in order to prevent and avoid vehicle theft.
The audi s4 from 2000-2002 lacks an alarm capable of preventing easy theft. There is no immobilizer and the cars alarm can be easily bypassed and started with a simple screwdriver. S4 thefts are high, compared to the number of these cars actually made the thefts are grossly unproportional. Personally i have had to get an aftermarket alarm out of the fear that my high-performance automobile can be stolen by some kid with a flathead screwdriver.
The alarm system on the 1999-2002 audi s$ is defective and useless when the door lock is simply punched out with a screwdriver.
My audi s4 was almost stolen in nj right by route 9 in fort lee. The drivers side door handle was drilled out to try and circumvent the alarm. Luckily, something sppoked them or the club was a deterrent. Still, it should not be this easy to steal this car like this. I've heard of many stolen this way. Audi put in a crappy alarm that does not work under some circumstances like this...
Too many audi s4s are being stolen around the boston, new jersey, new york, philly area.there was a special on the news in boston about just how easy it is to steal the xenon headlights (1 minute).no immobilizer was added to the s4 although other audi models received one as well as lower priced sister company volkswagen's jetta starting in 1999.there is not enough security for a 40,000 plus dollar car.i have heard of many many people having their s4s stolen or being robbed of their almost 1000 dollar xenon headlights-not to mention people hurting the car (1000s of dollars damage) trying to get the headlights.audi needs to issue a recall and retrofit the vehicle with more security.
All audi s4's produced from mid 1999 to 2002 suffer from an ineffective alarm system.the model years are 2000, 2001, and 2002.due this defect these vehicles are being stolen at an alarming rate off of every street corner in the nyc metro area.the audi s4 was a limited production run vehicle. Less then 15000 were imported into the united states for sale by audi of north america. For this vehicle to be number 25 of the top 25 cars stolen in new jersey shows complete negligence on the part of audi. (nicb-- http://www.nicb.org/public/newsroom/whereismycar/top25bystate.cfm#nj )the other vehicles on that list have yearly production numbers that go well over 25000 units per year. The audi a8 received an immobilizer for 2000+ models. To save a few bucks audi skipped fitting s4's with immobilizers.for this reason i cannot park my car anywhere in new jersey because i know it will not be there when i come back. Audi needs to recall these vehicles and add immobilizer systems or else none will exist in the nyc metro area. They also need to strengthen the door area around the doors lock cylinder. Almost all s4s that were stolen in new jersey, had a screw driver taken to the door near the handle. They punch and hole lift/push the lock plunger bar up and the alarm is disabled!!!!! this is unacceptable for any car let alone one that is this expensive. Thieves will often drive these vehicles at speeds in excess of 140 mph on public highways joy riding, and creating a potential for loss of human life.
The problem is the safety of the engine cooling fan which is right inside the grille. When the hood is unlatched and you reach in the normal place for the safety release, if the engine is running, the fan slices open the end of your finger. I do not own the car, but have the sliced finger!
Drive by wire (dbw) throttle body system failure.ecu throws epc code and engine power is compromised. Car may be unable to exceed 40 mph and car may buck uncontrollably.restarting car may clear condition for a short time.traffic negotiationwas quite dangerous, as dbw system may error at any time.dbw throttle body seems to be an answer to a problem that does not exist.
I just did an oil change myself on the car and i noticed. (before the change) that the whole bottom of the engine was covered by oil. So that is there was an oil leak.i think is it from the head cylinder gasket, this should not be happening in this early stage of the car since my last inspection was only 8000 miles ago.i just hope it's not worse since the car has lost some power. The total cost was an insane $1500 because the head cylinder and bottom was send to be resurfaced, if you need it or not.dt
Much of this information is from www.audiworld.com.there have been numerous turbo failures on the earlier 2000 audi s4.for the people that have had turbo failures, some have indicated an abnormal 'siren' sound when accelerating.there have been a few turbos that have also been replaced (without failure) because of complains of this sound.my car started exhibiting this sound from 2k miles onward.initially, this sound occured only when the engine was cold.it is however now more apparent most of the time.i have brought this to the attention of the audi service department but have insisted that sound is normal and is apparent even on new cars.since then i have test driven a new s4 and the sound is not present.the theory to the current failure is that there is an insufficient oil supply to the turbos and because of this the internal bearings are damaged and hence start whining ('siren sound')and eventually failing.a few changes by audi also supports this theory.1)they haverevised the turbos on the newer s4s.the oil inlet to the new turbos are now larger.also,2) they have revised the recommended oil weight from a 5-40w to 0-30w which ensures better oil flow and lubrication at lower temperatures.the reason of my concern is that the turbos cost more than $5000 dollars to replace and i intend to keep my car for 5 years or 90k miles (whichever comes first).fyi the 'siren' sound is sometimes loud enough that passengers in my car think that there is a emergency vehicle in the vicinity.i would be more than happy to assist you in any way, or provide you with contacts, literature on individuals that have experienced turbo failures.
The radio had really bad reception, cd and tape were fine. The reception only work for some reason ( but not that great) in the area where the audi dealer was. The first owner had audi put a new radio, but it took them 16 monthsto received the new radio. That is 2 months after i bought the car form the first owner. The radio was changed but with the same result.the dealer said something it happen that the radio does not work in some area, and that it was normal. ( as if i didn't know how a radio worked) i even talked to the manager of the audi dealer, and he said the samething, so until now i'm driving a 40.000 dollars car with no radio, how funny is that!dt
The cup holder in the dash board is very badly located, just on the top of the radio and other equipement.if any liquid spills from the cup holder, as it did on my car, the liquid would directly fall on the radio and the other equipement, and could cause a shortcircuit ( as i did). The radio blew up and the heat and a/c works when they wants to. So for me the cup holder has no use since the location is too dangerous. And i think vw has the same cup holder location problem.dt

The problem i am experiencing is analogous to a recall already announced for the audi a6: nhtsa recall no. 00v-147, vw recall no. Ur **lai have a 2000 audi s4 with 64,000 miles.i recently received my car back from a 64,000 mile service. My gas gauge had indicated i had at least a quarter tank of gas left, and my trip computer indicated i had more than 60 miles until empty. I was on the highway when the car started sputtering. At first, i didn't know what the problem was. Luckily, i was able to turn through 3 lanes of traffic with no power and get into the emergency lane. I checked my car, and there were no obvious signs of the problem. I happened to notice that my trip computer miles counter (which i reset on every fill-up), was reading higher than would be typical. It was at that point that i suspected i had run out of gas. I called aaa, requesting a gallon of gas. Indeed, this solved the problem.i was fortunate in my situation. I doubt others who also experience this problem would be as lucky. I've already heard many stories on car forums, etc. Of owners having 'close calls' because they've run out of gas when they don't expect to.this problem has been linked to the sending unit audi uses in these models. There have been many failures, and it is all too common a problem that needs to be addressed. It is absolutely identical to the sending unit failures on the 2000 a6, so i don't understand why it wouldn't be addressed on the 2000 a4/s4 (b5 platform) or any other model that uses the same unit. *la

Experienced a grinding noise and vibration in the transmission while accelerating onto highway from a stop, shifting from 1st to 2nd gear at approx. 4500 rpm. After this incident, the transmisison grinded when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear all the time above 3500 rpm. I contacted the dealer and had to wait a week for them to see my car. They kept the car for a day to "diagnose the problem." they told me that 2nd gear was "shot" due to "shifting at high rpms" or from "hard shifting" and that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. I said that this was ridiculous and that i wanted a new transmission. They said that audi would only authorize them to rebuild my unit.they also informed me that if this happened again, i would have to pay for the repairs myself and that i would no longer be covered under warranty. It disturbs me how a car manufacturer's transmission could not hold up to the power output of the engine and that the car should not be shifted "high" or "hard". When the repairs are completed, must i then baby this performance automobile and fear shifting above 3500 rpm (half of the engine's redline rpm)? also, i cannot understand how my warranty will not cover a component if it breaks twice. To me, that sounds like a defect. I am now waiting for the dealer to contact me when the necessary parts arrive.

The contact owns a 2000 audi s4. The contact stated that the vehicle was not equipped with the latch system and therefore was unable to install a car seat. The manufacturer informed the contact that the latch system kit was no longer available with the revised technical service bulletin 690803. The latch system was not installed. The failure and current mileage was 99,705.
Drivers seat is rocking. When you shift gears or brake you will feel the rocking motion. Its continuosly gotten worse over the past year. I've just taken it in to the dealer and they "could reproduce the problem &it is within specs." i feel that this is getting worse and is even unsafe. I have spoke with many other owners about this and they have gotten the same response from the dealers.
Abs computer module failure.on the instrument panel, the abs light came on whle the brake light was flashing and beeping.took it ot the dealer and the abs pump with controller was/is bad.the part with labor is $1600.00.after some research, this part goes bad alot and is a major safty issue.if you brake hard the rear wheels will lock up and the car could spin out of control.
Abs failure on 2000 s4 with only 60,000 miles.the abs failure light comes on randomly while driving.i had this problem checked out with a certified audi mechanic.he states the actual pump is not the problem, but the circuitry that controls the pump is defective, and also states this problem is very common in my model vehicle.abs failures should be considered as dangerous as a broken seat belt, and should be repaired at the cost of the manufacturer (audi)
Out of the blue, with 64,000 miles on the car, the abs warning light and brake warning light come on, followed by 3 loud beeps. When the beeps stop, the abs warning light stays on, the brake warning light blinks continually. Since the first incident, this now happens every time i drive the car. Sometimes the lights will go out and stay out for 5-10 minutes, for the whole thing to start over again.when these lights are on, the abs does not work. I had a panic stop to avoid a deer and the rear wheels locked up. The car skidded but i did not crash.dealer says that the abs controller computer must be replaced, at a cost of $1300. This is apparently very common on 2000 s4 and a4 audi's. I contacted audi of america, they refuse to fix the problem, denying that it is a safey issue and saying that the car is out of warranty.
Abs control module needed to be replaced in 2000 audi s4 after numerous false dashboard warning light indications were intermittently displayed will driving.

Abs ( anitlock brake system ) failure, will cuase brake lock-up and will result in a accident. Abs has not been repaired due to the amount of money that it would take to fix ( $ 1200-1600 ). Abs pump module needs to be replaced. I haved researced than many other audi owners have the same exact problem.
Abs warning light began flashing.diagnosed by dealer as abs controller unit; price to fix $1287.have not fixed yet.
Failure of abs?ecu control module...no abs brakes, possible loss of control of vehicle. Car has only 50,000 miles.
I just had my rotors and pads replaced on all four wheels of my 2000 audi s4. Less than three weeks after that repair, the abs computer failed. I don't know if the two incidents are related but i am worried about the failure of the abs controller at such a young age. Computer parts do not take wear and tear and should be designed for the expected life of the car- not four years like for me. I have read on the internet of many other similar failures and i am concerned of a general safety issue, particularly for such a critical part like an abs controller.
Just driving one evening and the abs/brake light came on.the abs controller was at fault.did some research ,and a significant number of people w/ the same car has the same problem.
Purchased my 2000 audi s4 from the original owner- the car had 10k miles on it and yes, it was out of warranty. At about 13.5k miles i noticed that i had trouble stopping one evening- almost rear ending someone in the process because my brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Parked the car that night-and then about 4 hours later, on my way home...same symptoms as mentioned before, except now my abs light was on. Ext mourning...moved car out of driveway and noticed a oil puddle from the left front drivers side engine area. I began to search for the leak with the help from a local friend and he suggested-last resort-to check the abs control unit...i did, and sure enough, my whole hand was covered in oil when i reached underneath the abs unit.called local audi dealer...and also called audi of america...dropped car off at dealer...they confirmed that the unit (abs) had indeed failed. Audi of america denied any help at all with a unit that failed at 13.5k miles!!!!!!!i ended up paying $1,500.00 to have it fixed.
Communication failure from the abs module, it causes the abs light to stay lit and the brake light flashes, when this happens the abs does not work on the car, it's a very common problem with these units but audi hasn't done a recall. This will be the second time i have to replace this unit out of pocket since i've owned my 2000 audi s4.
Abs brake module has failed on my 2000 audi s4.dash indicator began flashing on 10/9.on 10/10 dealer checked computer and the diagnosis was that module had failed.
While applying the brakes pedal went to the floor. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it home. Abs braking light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.consumer contacted thedealership, and will make appointment tobring the vehicle in for inspection.consumer contacted manufacturer but refused to assist repair of vehicle.*la
Audi usa has engineering control and were contacted and present during repair. Under very icy conditions on straight road, during acceleration from very slow speed, vehicle pitched into oversteer condition. Not entirely unexpected, but after a difficult recovery, when all seemed ok, it oversteered again quite violently. This was again recovered, but it appeared that there was an abs brake input , certainly not of my doing.the third cycle was more severe, and i left the road. Neither the brake nor throttle were touched during the whole cycle, but steering inputs were powerful as i attempted to save the day.the separateness of the cycles alerted me to the possibility that the wheel speed sensors had detected a differential speed and applied the brakes.audi refuses to release any data on the operation of their abs system, and the volatile computer data has gone..it is noteworthy that some of the control functions previously identified, electronic stability control, etc, are now embedded in the abs .the s4 did not have a stability control mechanism, it now does.this is a very powerful vehicle system, and if it should fail, the consumer should be able to know the criteria under which it should, could operate and/or fail. A years worth of communication has produced zero data from audi.
The abs and brake lights on my dashboard initially flashed and beeped intermittently, but now are on constantly. Upon researching the issue, i've discovered that this is a problem experienced my many other my2000 s4 owners. This is a significant safety issue, as there is the risk that brakes may lock up (even when releasing the pedal) under braking when experiencing these symptoms. Please take action on this issue. I know many owners who have no choice but to hold off on the repair due to the amount being charged by dealers to replace the part (~$1700.00), even though the most likely culprit of the problem is wiring between the controller and the ecu (<$1.00).
Abs controller module failure - bosch 5.3 system - 2000 audi s4.
Problems with abs controller on 2000 audi s4.*mrabs warning light was intermittently on.*la
Abs warning light on dash, accompanied with a flashing brake warning and three beeps.this occurred intermittently and with increasing frequency.based on some invcestigationg, this appears to be a very common problem with the abs controller modules on volkswagen and audi vehicles.when the module fails, it renders the abs system inoperative and can lead to rear wheel lockup in emergency stopping manouvers or in slippery road conditions.i have removed the module and had it repaired.this service at an audi dealer would cost in excess of $1000.
Failed abs controller unit.abs is nonfunctional. In poor weather, my brakes will lock up.
My abs and brake lights come on irractly while driving. I have checked the and filled the brake fluid resivor like the manual states. But still get the lights. Apparently this is a very common problem from audi. The saftey of many people are at stake here. I will not and have not driven my car since the lights came on, and my local audi dealership want $1,400. To replace!thas ridiculous for a car that has barely 54k miles.you would think something as important and life saving as the brake system would have a better design and lower failure rate. Im positive that i am not the only audi owner that has filed a complaint and postive i will not be the last.thank you for you timeluis castellanos
While driving the brake and abs lights came on. The owner took the vehicle to the dealer and was told by the dealer that this defect can cause the other controllers todo damage and effect the instrument cluster. It can also effect the engine controller.the owner also contacted the manufacturer who did not think that this problem was of needed interest.provide further details.
On or about 11/20/00 i applied brakes while driving down hill. Car accelerated out of control. Brakes would not stop car, which eventually crashed into telephone pole. I injured my left leg. Audi advised me they knew of no "defect" that could cause this accident. On 13/21/01 as i applied brakes to turn into a parking space contiguous to a building the vehicle accelerated. When i both heard to engine racing and the car accelerating i fortunately shifted into neutral and stopped the vehice. My foot was not on the accelerator! i refuse to drive this vehicle. Audi's response is that if the dealer finds a problem audi will take appropriate action. There is a problem whether audi finds it or not. I am not risking a fatal accident to establish this fact!
My abs controller appears to be failing.abs warning light will come on and go out at random times.i have 48,000 miles on this vehicle.since the abs system acts as a proportioning valve between the front and rear wheels, the rear wheels will lock up under moderate braking when the light comes on.i cannot diagnose the problem properly due to the random nature of the warning light.many similar reports on audiworld.com on this failure.
I was going down the street and my abs light and brake light came on and beeped 3 times.i got over as soon as i could to make an appointment to go to audi.i went up there and they said that they have never seen that code before so they just erased the code.i left and was going about 10mph and lightly put my brakes on and my front brakes locked up, i came to a screeching halt.i immediately went back to audi and they said that my abs module is not working.imagine if i was on the highway and my brakes locked up.this product should be recalled.since this is a safety product can you replace the part.it seems like every time i go to audi just for an oil change that i never leave without spending more money, because they find things that are wrong.i have talked to other audi owners and they say that they probably sabotage our cars just so they can make more money.as i just went in for a oil change and they said that my secondary water pump was not working.there was no cel (check engine light) i would imagine that it would come on if that failed.i hope that this abs control module does not happen to anyone on the highway due to this non working safety part. The part number is:8eo 614 111e or 8eo 614 111asince i could not find audi under manufacturer but i have a 2000 audi s4.thank you and have a great day.
Abs failure: bosch 5.3 abs module found in vw, audi & porsche fail within the first 60k miles.abs modules typically last for well over 100k & generally for the life of a car.audi charges ~$1300 to replace. 3rd party repair is ~$300. Abs becomes disabled & can create unexpected situations especially during inclimate weather.replacement or repair of the module resolves the issue & abs functions as expected.

Complaint received via e-mail." i purchased a 2000 audi s4 quattro with 39k miles on it from a non-audi dealer in march of 2002. At approximately 50,600 miles my abs controller failed. This is indicated by a diagnostic trouble code (dtc) in the vehicle's ecu (computer) as well as 3 loud beeps when you start the car and the abs light staying lit and the red brake light flashing constantly. This part has failed on multiple audi s4's of the same model year that i know of. Audi would not warranty my part as my factory warranty had expired at 50,000 miles. The parts alone cost approximately $1200 plus the additional cost of the labor to install the part. The results of the abs controller's malfunction is that essentially, i do not have anti-lock braking in the car, causing under hard braking the possibility of locking the brakes. This happened on numerous occasions. Audi of america has been notified by numerous individuals of this particularly common problem on the 2000 s4s, however, to date, no recalls have been made."
Abs controller on a 2000 audi s4 failed after 58k miles.the brake fluid pump and abs controller unit are all in one, and the cost for repairs is about $1700.it is my belief that this unit should not fail after such low mileage.the car is under full warranty up to 50k miles or 4 years, whichever comes first, but these units are known to fail within the first 60k miles, and in other vehicles they last much longer.
I own a model year 2000 audi s4. The car has approx. 80k miles and the abs control unit has recently started malfunctioning. There are numerous reports of failures of abs units on audi a4 & s4s. These failures occur as early as 30k miles. Upon contacting an audi dealership in my local area, i was told that they see these failures at least once a week.with this kind of failure rate & at such early mileage, i believe this is a defective part. I'm aware of other audi owners also having filed complaints about this part. I would like to request a recall of the affected audi models.
This is a serious issue requiring attention immediately. There are numerous failures of the abs control module in 2000 audi s4's primarily, along with similar makes. This poses a significant safety hazard. Failures are due to a defective design of the control unit portion of the abs module. The following link indicates how many failures are occurring:http://www.usedpartslive.com/live/2/year/audi/model/abs_control_module/there is a mass market for this item primarily because it is very expensive for owners to replace at the dealer. Recently, dealers have been replacing the control unit separately for ~600-700, but there is no assurance that the new unit is not also defective and prone to failure. It's only a matter of time before this becomes the cause of more potentially fatal accidents.

Driving on the on-ramp, about 40 mph. I was cut off fairly aggressively and had to apply the brakes hard. My brake light lit-up and beeped a few times. My car then began to spin out of control across the freeway (i-40, a major trucking artery). Luckily i did not hit anyone and was able to control the spin. I found out later that my abs control unit (what a surprise) failed, of course at the most critical time of need for it. Total cost to replace was $800. Audi , in spite of numerous complaints about this part on this car, will not take any responsibility for recalling or reimbursing.
After having my front brake pads and rotors replaced on my 2000 audi s4 at 92,671 miles, my abs and brake lights continued to come on intermittently, but each time i drove the vehicle.after having the diagnostic system scanned, it was determined that my abs control module needed replaced with parts and labor costing $742.58.i've done research to find that this has been a common problem with audi.i contacted audi, but they declined responsibility.
While driving along ca-35 (skyline boulevard) at approximately 45 mph on saturday, april 2, 2005 during light to moderate braking around a curve, both the abs and brake warning lights on my 2000 audi s4 came on, along with 3 warning tones. Simultaneously, a sudden change in brake feel was detected along with a "thunk" noise from the front region of the vehicle.the following week, i had the car inspected by two independent service and repair organizations, both of which confirmed an intermittent electronic failure in the vehicle's abs control module (a $1000+ part). Since then, the vehicle experiences 3-4 of these intermittent failures during the course of a driving day. When the failure occurs when the vehicle is not braking, it's annoying but somewhat inconsequential. However, when the problem happens during braking, there is definitely a marked change in braking behavior as the abs controller goes offline. Under emergency braking situations, i imagine such a failure could be a substantial safety and risk issue.somewhat taken aback by the total estimated repair costs of $1600+, i decided to do some investigation into the problem at sites such as this (nhtsa odi), audiworld.com and the web at large. What i found is a consistent pattern of this sort of failure across a wide swath of audi models during 1999 to 2000. Further, i have also learned that the original part installed on the vehicle was rev. A and replacement parts being installed are rev. E.conveying this information to audi's client services through two written letters resulted in no action on their part beyond a confirmation of "your vehicle is out of warranty, you must bear the cost of this repair." that'd be fine were this a wear or maintenance item or due to my own negligence; however, i believe the evidence strong that this is a design and/or quality control problem on a critical vehicle safety system.
While driving 65 mph the brake and abs lights on the consumer's 2000 audi s4 began to flash.the consumer ran a diagnostic check which indicated that the abs module had failed.the consumer found many reports of this failure.the unit was replaced with a new part from audi (8e0 614 111 e). *sc

It seems that there is a manufacturing defect among b5 platform audi a4 vehicles, where either the abs controller is apt to fail prematurely, or the connection between the controller and the instrument cluster fails.due to the high frequency of failures, it seems highly unlikely that the abs controller is at fault and prone to such a high failure rate. Wiring to the instrument cluster seem to be the more likely cause, yet dealers almost exclusively decide to point to the controller, which costs upwards of $1200.this condition is undoubtedly risky and dangerous. A malfunctioning abs controller can cause the rear wheels of the vehicle to lock up under hard braking, even when releasing the brake.
Many audi and vw models manufactured starting in the later '90s and continuing to present, use the bosch 5.3 abs controller, which is prone to catastrophic failure, ostensibly due to defective design.this module controls multiple brake-related functions including the abs which is important for winter driving, but the most critical function of this module is probably the electronic brake force distribution, or ebd.these vehicles are designed such that if the ebd is inoperative, the proportion of hydraulic force applied to the rear brakes during emergency braking is as great as it is during moderate braking effort when there is minimal transfer of vehicle weight to the front wheels.the ebd is supposed to adjust the front/rear braking distribution dynamically according to the measure of the deceleration, so that the rear wheels will not lock up during emergency braking.if this module should fail during emergency braking on dry pavement, the rear wheels could lock up and cause an accident which could easily include fatalities.this is an expensive repair for owners, costing roughly $2000, and many owners have probably put off the repair indefinitely.evidence which can be found through a simple web search, suggests that the problem is widespread, and that if it has not already led to serious accidents, it is only a question of time.this problem is genuine, and vw/audi should be compelled to take immediate corrective action.
A frontal collision with another vehicle at 50 mph. Upon impact, driver's air bag did not deploy, and the steering wheel came off the steering column. Neither the driver nor the one passenger was injured. Both parties were wearingseat belts.
The door locks and alarm system failed when my car was stolen from the ikea parking lot in elizabeth, new jersey. Thieves punched or drilled a hole in the driver door between the door handle and door lock and were able to open the door and disable the alarm system at the same time. After breaking the steering column, starting the car, and outrunning police, the car was recovered via lojack with all my personal belongings gone. Audi should adress this issue by making new cars with an improved security system and by doing something for existing owners to fix this costly and dangerous problem. Other audi owners need to be made aware of this problem.

Thunking noise in front suspension for last two years when i get on the gas or on the brakes. Two separate dealers took the car for a road test and said it was fine. It has gotten progressively louder and more noticeable. I am worried that this could be leading up to a failure of the suspension or steering.
While travelling at 35-40 mph, i hit a small bump and tire blew, also these tires were sold as an all weather tire, i was assured by several audi sales people that they were and at aproximately 200 miles i had to purchase snow tires as these tires are dangerous in even a light dusting of snow.ipurchased michelin alpines for snow, but, have not replaced the bridgestones for normal driving as competitive tires would be at least $800 due to the size and speed rating.( dot number: )
Sidewall of front passenger tire has bubbled in two locations without a catalyst of any kind. (tiresize: 225/45r17)( dot number: tire size: 225/45r17 )
Tire had a big bubble.did not know it had one until i had read about it on the audi user web-site and then checked my car.probably happened on the bumpy cross bronx expressway on a cold day.i have not had another problem with the other tires.( dot number: tire size: 225/45 r17 )

While detailing my car, i noticed a small crack in the sidewall of the left rear tire.it begins where the tread meets the sidewall and extends 1.5" toward the center of the wheel.the crack is about 1/4" deep.i can supply a photo if you wish, please email me if you'd like one.this tire has been removed from the vehicle, and none of the other tires had similar cracks.the tires have not been abused in any way.thank you!( dot number: ejh8cfe429 tire size: 225/45r17 )

I discovered a sidewall buldge while washing the car. I changed the one affected tire with the spare and i am monitoring the other tires. I don't know if this is a safety concern or not. However on a high performance car i don't wish to take any risks with my tires.( dot number: tire size: 245/45/17 )
The tire did not 'fail' but rather causes a pull to the right that the dealer refuses to correct. They claim bridgestone needs to do this. For a $45k car i expect tires that last a while and if not then audi should replace them. The listed cost is estimated replacement cost for decent tires. (dot number: ejn8tiresize: 225/45r17)
Each of the tires have bubbles all occuring at different milages.2 replaced and both bubbled again after only 3000 miles.live in the chicago area roads are not the best but other cars don't have this problem.other 2000 audi s4's and audi tt's are experiencing the same problem.www.audiworld.com is a good place to gather information on other defects.( dot number: tire size: 225/45/17 )
Bubble in tire sidewall after hitting pothole. (tiresize: 225/45-17)( dot number:tire size: 225/45-17 )
This is the third tire failure since i received my s4. A fellow motorist noticed a large bubble in the sidewall of the right front tire. This tire is a replacement tire that was installed after the original failed. There is obviously some problem or defect with these tires. I have been in touch with other s4 owners and many of them complain about these sidewall bulges. The fact that bridgestone denies any problem and will not replace the tires free of charge is ridiculous. I do not feel safe driving this car with these tires. Pressure needs to be put on audi and bridgestone to either reimburse us for the tires and replace them free of charge, or to supply us with a new improved or different tire. These tires should be recalled immediately because they are unreliable and unsafe. A blowout in the sidewall of a tire at highway speed can cause a serious accident after which a serious lawsuit would follow.( dot number: ejh8cfe279 tire size: p225/45r17 )
After washing my car and detailing the tires (there were no abnormalities at this time), i made a trip on the highway for approximately 20 miles. When i reached my destination, i noticed a golf ball-sized bulge in the sidewall of my right front tire. Upon inspection, it appeared to be a defect of some sort since there were no marks on the tire and i had not hit any significant pot holes on my trip. I replaced the rim and tire with the spare. The next day, i went to the audi dealer and they said that they do not cover warranties or service on tires. They directed me to the bridgestone dealer (king bear, 3907 4th avenue, brooklyn, new york, (718)836-6501). The tire dealer said that i had "impact damage. You must have hit something." i informed the dealer that i did not hit anything and he said that there was nothing i could do and that i would have to buy a new tire. I told him that this was ridiculous that a $250 tire on a $42,000+ new car would fail at less than 2000 miles. He said that there was nothing he could do. Upon further arguing, he called bridgestone and they agreed to let me pay half the price of the tire. I reluctantly agreed to pay. They had to order the tire and i am now waiting for it to come in. I am very disturbed that a brand new $250 tire would fail from normal driving at less than 2000 miles. I am worried about the safety of these tires. Does this mean that i will have to replace tires on a regular basis? i wish to let you and other s4 owners know that there may be a problem with these tires, though the dealer said that there is no problem and that this is a common occurrence.( dot number: tire size: p225/45r17 )
2 inch bubble in exterior sidewall of front driver's side tire noticed while cleaning wheels.bridgestone dealer said bubble was due to "road hazzard damage" but none hadoccurred. Researched problem on "audi world" website and found numerous similar low( dot number: tire size: 225/45r17 )
Car was delivered on june 4th 2000.from the time i drove off the lot the vehicle slightly steered towards the right.i was told by different dealer service departments it was either the tire pressure or the crowning in the roads.i asked ogner motors in woodland hills to rotate the tires and perform further evaluation.they found one of my tires to be defective.apparently the sidewall of the tire in question failed.they are awaiting a replacement tire form the manufacturer...i am concerned about the other three tires on the vehicle considering i have heard numerous report via audiworld.com that these tires are extremely sucseptible to sidewall (bubbles) failure. Large bubbles on sidewall of l front tire (2 bubbles, one larger than 5 inches in diameter) and l rear tire (1 bubble); no obvious injury to outside of tire (eg nail or cut); no known trauma to tire (eg hitting curb); i took picture with digital camera and can email them to you!!!( dot number: tire size: 225/45r17 )

Vibration while driving due to soft sidewall after just less than 800 miles. Replaced all tires at that time, march 24, 2000, kept the 3 remaing tires, scraped the defective tire. I still have the three tires with the 800 miles on them in storage. You can have them for your investagation. ( dot number: tire size: 225/45zr17 )

This is the third tire i have had to replace since getting the car, one had a bubble and the other two had a sidewall blowout will driving the car.audi has sent their customers a letter stating that if certain condition are met they will pay for the replacement. (tiresize: 225/45yr17)
This is the second tire failure in less than 4000 miles. Once again while washing my car, i discovered a bulge in the sidewall. This problem seems to occur approximately every 1900 miles. I contacted bridgestone and the representative said that since these tires have a low profile sidewall, they are prone to damage from driving on "rough" roads. I told him that i understand that i live in new york city where the roads may be "rough"but that low profile tires are supposed to be engineered with a stronger sidewall to absorb any "roughness" in the road. This is why they cost significantly more than tires with a larger sidewall. As an engineer, i know that the sidewall should be strengthened on a low profile tire to prevent damage and reduce the risk of a failure or an accident. I believe that these tires are unsafe unless they are used only on perfectly smooth roads. I still had to pay $125, half price for a new tire, and i am not satisfied with the answers i received at all. I am very disappointed in the quality of these tires as well as concerened for my safety while driving with these tires. It is ridiculous that normal everyday driving would cause two identical tire failures in less than 4000 miles on a brand new car. The manufacturer insists thatthere is no defect and that there is no problem with the tires. How can this be? my family and i have been driving on the same roads for years with various different cars equipped with various types of tires and have never encountered tire problems before. One more point of interest is that on the bridgestone website, the potenza re-040 tires are not even listed in the catalog. This seems strange to me. Perhaps there is a problem or a recall and the manufacturer just does not want to stay. I will be keeping my fingers crossed and will regularly check the condition of these tires, though it may be in my best interest to change all the tires to another brand altogether.
I don't know the dot #'s on the tires.first tire i paid for myself.due to many complaints on audiworld.com forums, i purchased road hazard warranty for all tires.second tire would have been covered under road hazard warranty, but there was a national shartage of re040's at this time.i then obtained a used replacement from another s4 owner that already switched to another tire.i'm moving soon, so phone# and address will change.the phone# and address are my parents.my parents should give you my new phone# if needed.mail sent to my parents should also get to me without problem. Pe00 020; consumer was traveling about 55mph on highway and noticed a tremble of vibration. He was able to pull over.noticed thatrear passenger tire tread separated fromrim.firestone, bridgestone re040, potenca, p225 r15/dealership was aware of the problem.
