Heated steering wheel burns hands, smokes. Doesn't vary with settings. Did not allow it to get to a fire condition.

As the car was driving normal, light smoke began coming out of the air vents.nothing was on, such as the ac or the heater.there were no signals or any alarms lit on the dashboard. In terms of minutes, without any warning, the light smoke turned into pitch black smoke, immediately turning into flames. In a matter of a minute, there was an explosion that completely destroyed the entire interior as well as the exterior of the vehicle. However, the vehicle was left with no visible fire damage to the engine or front end.*nlm

The central dash cluster, drivers information display fades to illegible after a few minutes of operation.

Transmission and computer broke while sitting in driveway.shop which repaired car tried to find a used computer out of 3 other audis and all were rusty.mechanic informed me that water seeped behind dashboard and under driver's floorboard, rusting out computer ,and ruining transmission.evidently, all other audis showed the same water damage in the same area.computer failed to send a signal to the dashboard that there was a problem.fortunately, the transmission locked while the car was in park and not while we were on the road.we installed a rebuilt transmission and new computer. I am concerned because i drove a vehicle once when the transmission lockedwhile in the middle of a road, coming to a dead stop.i believe this could be a dangerous situation.

During normal use and driving abs, brake light and the air bag light comes on. Erratic at first then steady. Diagnosis: abs controller failure. During period of failure vehicle operates but without automatic braking system.this appears to be a common concern after conducting a quick internet search. Mechanic states this is common.

Dt:the contact stated while driving vehicle she smelled melted plastic, maybe an electrical odor. When she pulled over fire and smoke was coming from the dashboard vents.there were no prior warnings orprior problems with the vehicle.the vehicle was completely destroyed by the fire.the insurance companyinspected the vehicle to determine the cause of the fire.

On may 2nd, 2007 i brought my vehicle for repair to beverly hills audi service. Specifically i informed him that there was a burning smell coming from the vehicle that penetrated my sinuses like sulfur. Beverly hills audi service department was able to duplicate the same smell and burning sensation during that week. They advised me that certain parts needed to be changed and i authorized the repair totaling almost $2,000.00. On may 10th, 2007 i picked up my vehicle and drove it for a couple of days. On may 16th, 2007 i contacted beverly hills audi service department and advised my service adviser that i could still smell the burning in the car and that it was unbearable. I proceeded to drive the car to the service department and on the way the car began to burn a horrible smell and within a few moments there were flames coming out of the dashboard from the ac vents. I immediately shut down the car and proceeded to the left of the 405 north freeway and put the car to a stop. At that time the car was completely in flames and i was fortunate to get the door open. I ran away and watched the car blow up and go into complete flames. The fire department and police arrived minutes later. The fire department determined it was an electrical fire from the dashboard.i researched on the internet (nhtsa) if their had been issues with audi a6 vehicles catching on fire and found that their had been a recall campaign initiated in july 26th, 2004. It stated that in certain passenger vehicles a fire could originate in the left dashboard area. I contacted the beverly hills service department and was advised that the recall had not been performed on my vehicle. My vehicle had been serviced ten times since the recall was initiated. Recall for the audi 1999 a6 - recall 04v133000. I can provide additional information, if needed. At this time i have filed a complaint against vw of america, audi of america, and beverly hills service department.

Smoke erupted through vent system. Pulled car to side of road and family of 4 evacuated. Within 90 seconds, the dash erupted into flames. Interior/dash etc. Was totally destroyed. Motor compartment untouched by fire. Seems to have occurred in electrical system. Have pictures of fire and fire dept response.

The contact owns a 1999 audi a6.while driving 65 mph, the contact smelled a toxic odor from the driver's side of the vehicle.he noticed green smoke coming from the vents and pulled the vehicle over.the smoke from all four of the vents turned into flames.the contact exited the vehicle and the fire department was called and filed a report.the vehicle was towed to a salvage yard and the vehicle was inspected to determine the cause of the fire.the vehicle was destroyed.the contact sustained minor injuries and had to go to the hospital.the failure and current mileages were 9,000.

Takata recalli've had to replace a wheel bearing and axel 2x @ $550 each time. Car wouldn't align right, so i replaced the tires several times due to the wearing on one side. The calipers won't come off when changing the brakes and rotors. The automatic windows would randomly roll down sometimesafter it would rain, and wouldn't roll back up for several days. I fixed the turn signal and cruise control, but the problems with those returned after a couple weeks, and while i was driving the under cover/protector plastic broke off all over the road because the audi dealership apparently forgot to put it back on properly. This possibly allowed for the oil pan to hit the ground and crack, which a suspension problem was clearly part of that problem too. I took it in to see about a crack in the oil pan. They couldn't find it, but shortly thereafter, i drove to the movie store and when i got back to my car, it was no longer running. A puddle of oil was spilling out of it, and the the engine was shot. I had the car for about 2 years. I'm guessing that the problems stemmed from the what the car was recalled for.

Instrument panel is faded to unreadable.an alarm is going off and i can't read what it says.a known problem with audi's.can't believe they didn't do a recall.

I parked and shut off my car to go in a store leaving a friend in there to wait. I was in the store for 2 mins and my friend came in and said there was smoke coming from the vents, an abundance of smoke. I went outside to see and witnessed what was happening and proceeded to open the hood of the car to see if the engine was causing the smoke. I opened the hood to realize that the smoke in fact was not coming from the engine. I walked back around to the driver side door and saw flames coming from the vent and a man walked up to say get away. Immediately i called 911 and tried to explain as i was hysterically crying. I went back into the store, which was rite aid and they proceeded to move any persons to the back of the store. The car continued to engulf in flames and continued to burn. The fire department finally showed up. There was a car parked next to me and was also damaged.

While driving my 1999 audi a6 on the expressway with my 3 year old son in his booster seat, the driver side of the dashboard starts to smoke . Then in less than a minute flames were coming out, by the time i was able to pull over, my dashboard was completely on fire, while taking my son out the airbag blew, scaring him even more, and not to mention all the toxic fumes we inhaled. The insurance tells me the car is a total loss, and if that airbag was activatedwhile i was still driving, it could have been fatal.

Audi a6 customer states that after receiving a recall notice she took her car in for repairs and was given a larger bill for other things that need to be repaired**ccthe consumer stated the dealer made repairs to the steering and engine. Update

1999 audi a-6 had a recall on headlight switch wires and dealer refuse to fix problem**ccthe consumer was told by the dealer that they could not perform the recall due to the vehicle havingan after market device installed. The after market accessories were wired into the headlights system.

While driving my audi a6 avant quattro, smoke began coming out of the drivers side dash vent.i stopped the car as soon as i safely could and called 911, as soon as i was out of the vehicle the smoke became worse and flames began rolling out of the dash area.the fire was extinguished almost immediately with a fire extinguisher which a nearby resident luckily had handy.by viewing this fire at close range i am certain that the vehicle would have been completely engulfed within minutes.the fire department used a heat sensing tool to determine that the source of the fire or hotspot was very near the fuse box behind the headlight switch.they cut the dash apart to be sure the fire was completely out.i had no warning of this malfunction and am just thankful that i was able to get away from the vehicle as quickly as i did.

The ignition system has a flaw allowing the ignition/auto-transmission to be switched off in drive.without knowing that had happened, the driver started the vehicle which immediately began rolling.the owner tried to stop the vehicle and was injured in the process.please describe details.

My 1999 audi a6 avant ignition switch failed causing the lack of turn signals, windshield wipers, heater and horn.the bernardsville audi dealers claims it "fried some wires" which to me sounds like a safety and fire hazard.

Ignition switch failure we caused the lights, turnsignla, horn, windshield wipers and washers and heat in the car to no work.very dangerous.this was caused by ignition switch melted wires from the heated steering wheel.

Consumer states red panel lighting is visible at night, mechanic discovered a short at cigar lighter housing and repaired.

December 13, 2007audi of rochester hills45441 dequindre roadrochester hills, michigan 48307attention: service managersubject: safety concern1999 audi a6 avantto whom it may concern:this evening, shortly after turning on the seat heater (which automatically turns on the steering wheel heater) i noticed a strong odor (burning plastic) & smoke being emitted from the steering wheel. The smoke was coming from behind the horn/airbag module. I turned off the seat heater, but that did not stop the steering wheel from continuing to heat-up and emit smoke. I had to roll down the windows and open the sunroof (very enjoyable in 30 degree temperature!) in order to be able to ventilate the cabin & be able to drive the vehicle home. After arriving home, i located the fuse related to the steering wheel heater and removed it so that i could drive the vehicle to your shop. (the fuse is in the center console.)this obviously poses the following safety risks:fire hazardemission of toxic fumes in the cabinrisk of inadvertent airbag deploymentplease have the problem investigated and contact me with the findings, as soon as possible.sincerely, ken guity

While traveling home on the atlantic city expressway, my wife and i noticed a peculiar smell coming from the vents.as the odor got stronger, we decided to pull over and check underneath the hood.when i looked underneath the hood, i saw nothing out of the ordinary.a few seconds later, i heard my wife exiting the vehicle because the cabin began to fill with smoke.upon closer review, i saw a small flame inside the drivers side vent.we worked frantically to put the small flame out however, we had no idea that the flame was much more intense than what was visible.seconds later, the entire dash was completely on fire.due to traffic conditions, it took the fire department 22 minutes to reach the fire consequently; the vehicle was completely demolished by the time they arrived.after spending an hour or so giving the state police the details of what happened, we finally realized that our cell phone, house keys and other important items were lost in the fire.we had to walk home- (3 miles) and wait for my parents to bring our spare key so we could get into our house.it took us more than a week to get all of the paperwork submitted to have our drivers license, social security card, etc. Replaced.my personal computer that had more than 100 sensitive work-related documents (worth more than the pc) was lost.these documents are completely unrecoverable and i havent begun to evaluate the amount of time it will take to replicate them.

I was pouring windshield fluid into my audi a6 one day. I sat down in the car to move it onto the street because i wanted to wash it,i turned the ignition on, as i got in i smelled burning plastic. I thought nothing of it so i drove it to the street.smoke started pouring out of the vents on the drivers side of the cabin.i rolled down the windows and the sunroof because i thought the air-conditioning or heater was having a problem. I turned the car off and got out and watched the smoke for a minute. The smoke then turned a black-dark grey color. Then came flames pouring out of the vent on the drivers side. Just then i hear this piercing screech and pop, the car was completely ruined inside and soot spewed everywhere around the car i then turned the hose on which i already had out from when i was going to wash my car. I puta majority of the fireout, so i walked over to my garage and got a fire extinguisher and sprayed it all over to make sure it was out. I hosed my car out and around, surprisingly the interior was still intact but just a tad bit dirty, so i took it to my friend who owns a dealer/body shop and he got the car fixed and its just like new again. He was saying something about wiring and headlights but i was just happy that my car was back. Please fix this audi because i would hate to see someone get hurt over this problem and be less fortunate than i was. Out of the whole mess i had to get a new dashboard, steering wheel, windshield and wiring also a paint kit. The car looks stunning i also had to get it detailed after so the total cost to repair was $1967.34 i love this car otherwise and i hope this does not happen again.

Center display faded out at 55000 miles and needed to be replaced for $900.

I own a 1999 audi a-6 sedan. Today it had a fire in the dashboard near the driver's side. Fortunately it occurred while it was at home where i had access to fir extinguishers and tools to disconnect the battery. It took 3 extinguishers to put out the blaze. Just moments earlier, my wife and 5 year old son returned home from church complaining of a toxic smell in the car! we were very fortunate the situation was not worse!

My husband and i were driving our 1999 audi a-6 sedan on a limited access highway, we noticed an acrid smell in the car. Suddenly smoke began pouring out the ac vents then flames began coming out the vents on the drivers side. I called the audiof america help line on the 16th of july, gave a report and on july 19, spoke to anette johnson who took a full feeling very unsatisfied by ms. Johnsons unhelpful, though sympathetic response, i did a web search using the terms audi, fire, dashboard and discovered that on march 23, 2004 it was announced that audi was recalling 172,888 vehicles because a wiring problem could cause a fire on the drivers side. Exactly what happened to us!i then went to the site www.intellichoice.com/reports/vehiclereport.efm/vehicle_nmb/11642/section/recallsthere i discovered that they disiplay all current information provided by the nhtsa in their recall database and you had noted that 22 reports had been filed on fires on this vehicle. Are we the 23rd or the 85th?i called ms. Johnson back and asked her why, when i described exactly what audi was recalling cars for she had not told me about the recall and offered to repair our car since it fell under that problem. She said that audi has not released this iformation that it was pending.yet i told her you had assigned a recall number to it (according to the above site). That number is 04v133000.i am appalled that news of this problem hit the media on march 24, 2004 and we were not notified.a fire just like the ones described in intellichoices site occurred to us and we certainly could have been seriously injured. Yet, the audi representative told us that owners still had not been notified.my husband and i still are having horrific flashbacks to that terrifying moment when flames lept into the passenger compartment.we strongly urge you to take action to make audi notify all owners of cars like ours immediately.

1999 audi a6 avant with serious safety issues. Consumer would like audi to pay for the last 4 repairs that needed to be done. Consumer has had some serious safety issues with this vehicle and states that it is a lemon.there was a rumbling noise coming from the engine, there was an oil leak coming from the engine, the engine light illuminated due to a bad pipe, the front rotors and pads were replaced, the transmission was leaking, the back wheels were dragging so the pads would not release, the brake and abs light illuminated, the cruise control was inoperative, t he sunroof was inoperative, the tie rods needed to be replaced, the timing belt, water pump, gasket oil cooler and serpentine belt were all replaced.

Water pump failed suddenly at 56,000 miles while on vacation trip.car immediately overheated, and was not drivable without risk of serious damage to engine. Occurred several hundred miles from nearest audi dealer. Cost to replace over $600 plus $400 for hotel & food for two nights (work performed by local vw dealer becuase nearest audi dealer several hundred miles away; had to wait overnight for parts to come from audi dealer; audi usa will not warrany vw's canada's work, only parts, even though audi is a subsidiary of vw).numerous reports of same problem (water pump failure at low miles) at audi owners site www.audiworld.com; audi owners manual suggest water pump service at 90,000 miles.car serviced per audi's recommended schedule & usually by dealer.

Cam seals and main seal both failed and cost over $2000 to repair out of warranty. Very upset since the car only had 58000 miles on it.

Engine oil leaks. Wife (main driver of vehicle) reported strong smell of burning oil. Dealer mentioned that this is a common problem and that manufacturer has covered repair for other owners. Manufacturer declined assistance for our model year (1999 with 37,000 miles) even though they would approve a 2000 model year with up to 62,000 miles.

Consumer smelled a burning odor while driving. Upon inspection of vehicle they noticed that oil was leaking onto the exhaust system, and the oil pressureescalated.

Consumer states has had an oil leak between engine and transmission for the last 3 years.inspected by dealer who replaced head gasket, but problem reoccured. Ts

I had a leak in the cam seal and it seems that a lot of others have experienced it in the audi forum.

Engine oil leak:driver side valve cover leaks after cam seals, water pump, and timing belt replaced.vehicle now has 95,000 miles.valve cover gasket on that side replaced 2 times each time only lasts one week before oil leak develops.worse leak each time.

Unintended acceleration -- car accelerated rapidly.would not slow even when driver's foot was not on the gas.engine revved rapidly and would not return to normal idle speed.

Engine has leaks in the crank seal housing, cam seal and the transmission seal. The seals seem to fail at a high rate.

1999 audi a6 2.8 liter catalytic converter failed at 93,000 miles november 2003.interior of catalytic converter is loose and rattles very loudly, the check engine light is on, meaning the the emissions component is ineffective. Dealer states out of warranty.

1996 audi a6 customer states that the catalytic converter has been replaced twice and still having problems**ccthe consumer was informed that the after market muffler he purchased didn't work well with audi's and it was recommended that the consumer only use a factory catalytic converter.

I have recently experience the exact same sudden acceleration with my audi a6 quattro. The temperature outdoors was very cold and i was traveling up a hill when the car kept accelerating on its own. While applying pressure to the brakes the car continued to accelerate. Luckily i was able to pull the car off the road and shifted into park. Upon placing the car in park the tachometer red lined. After taking it to the garage the technician determined he could not find anything wrong the automobile. The following week my husband drove the car and experienced the exact same thing. Again our car is in the garage and the technicians are trying to determine a cause. To date, they have been unsuccessful in finding the problem.

Vehicle fully accelerated on it own, resulting in very high speeds in traffic and on downhill drive.very difficult to stop vehicle when careening down steep hill toward an intersection.reportedly can happen in cold weather at any time.dangerous!!

When filling the gas tank in my 99 audi a6 quattro pressure builds inside the tank and sprays back at me. This has happened each time i put gas in it full or not.a recall was made but, not for my vin. I spoke with a audi rep. And a dealership and they said there's nothing that can be done unless i pay for it. I would but, there is already a recall made for that car just not that vin. It's a hazard and i've had other problems that i paid for. Please let me know if anything can be done. Thank you for your time!

Consumer has been having problems withfuel sending unit and fuel gauge. It shows tank is full when there is no fuel in tank.but dealer doesn't have the parts to repair the problem, they are currently on backorder.

Due to a defective fuel sending unit , fuel gauge was indictating about 1/3 of fuel in tank. But apparently there wasn't any fuel, causing vehicle to stall. Sending unit has been on back order since july 1999.

Gas level indicated 1/4 tank when engine stalled. Fuel sender is defective. Audi has no replacement.

Fuel leak from supply fuel line in an 1999 audi a6 during very cold weather. When temperatures drop below 15-20 f the crimped end of the fuel supply line leaks fuel, which creates an intense fuel smell in the cabin, but only if not moving at high speeds. The fuel leaking from the hose travels towards the back of the engine and eventually drips onto the exhaust manifold creating intense smoke. Apparently the cold line intensified by super cooled gas streaming through it causes the metal part of the line to contract at a sufficient rate as to allow fuel to leak out. When the fule line warms up, the leaking stops. Dealer could not replicate the problem because the ambient temperature was 40f at the time of testing and hence refused to aknowledge the problem. Subsequently the problem re-occured and i took several close-up pictures showing the leak and the ambient temperature. I can make the pictures available upon request. This is very dangerous condition that can go undetected at high speeds (high airflow dissipitates the smell) and/or if cabin air gets recirculated.

Engine malfunction.*mrthe consumers wife was driving the vehicle when it suddenly began to race, she was unable to stop the vehicle.the consumer ran stop signs and an intersection until she finally turned the vehicle off.the vehicle continued to race, and due to the level of racing, the crankcase seal blew out which caused oil to flow.the dealer advised the consumer the problem was due to a stuck fuel injector.scc

Fuel gaugedoes not register the correct amount of fuel, causing the driver to think more fuel is in the tank when, in reality, the tank is empty.problem was reported to the dealership. Dealer stated that the unit is being redesigned and that a new unit would be installed invehicle. Please provide any further information.

Gasoline sensor failed causing the low fuel alarm to go off.nlm

This, and apparently most, audi a6 vehicles do not have functioning gas guages. As a result the driver does not know when the vehicle will run out of gas. I have run this vehicle out of gas 5 time since the problem began, the last at 65 mph in the fast lane of ca 101 freeway. The sudden vehicle slowdown almost caused a multi-car, high speed accident. Audi has repeatedly attempted to fix the problem but after 8 months, report that they do not have a fix available.

Gas level indicated 1/4 tank when engine stalled. Fuel sender is defective. Audi has no replacement.

A malfunctionedgas gauge.consumer wasunable to getit repaired or replaced. Dealer/mfr notified. .et.

Fuel gauge gives wrong reading, when tank is it indicates that tank is on empty . Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further information.

Due to a defective fuel sending unit , fuel gauge was indictating about 1/3 of fuel in tank. But apparently there wasn't any fuel, causing vehicle to stall. Sending unit has been on back order since july 1999.

The gas guage reads that there is more fuel in the vehicle than there actually is. Dealer replacedgas sensor, and problem still exists.

Car accelerate on it's own.about 15 minutes into trip, started to feel the car accelerating on it's own. When i let go of the accelerator, rpm did not drop.double check the cruise control, turn it on and off makes no difference.pull off road, put in neutral to stop, race to 4k rpm.restart car, still @4k.stopped for 5 minutes, restart, back to normal. An accident waiting to happen!

Gas gauge malfunctioned, causing the fuel gauge to read "half full," and the vehicle stalled unexpectedly due to no gas in the vehicle. Presently, the fuel gauge reads full tank at all time. Also, a recallhas been issued for the brake booster for which the dealer has not received parts since 3 months ago. This may cause extended stopping distance, and result in a crash in below 0 degree weather.please provide further information.

Gas gauge isinaccurate, vehicle runs out of gas.fuel gauge registers at least a quarter tank more of gasthan there is in tank.audi is totally aware of the problem. Vehicle has been in for service three times.dealer is not able to fix the problem. *ml

The fuel gauge does not accurately indicate the amount of fuel in the tank.nlm

On january 19, returning home from a family trip, the throttle on our 1999 a6 stuck open at 65mph. I was trapped in the left lane of a 4 lane highway with no shoulder to pull onto due to heavy snow accumulation. I had stand on the brakes as hard as i could to avoid smashing into the vehicles ahead of me that started to slow down for an upcoming speed zone. I overheated my brakes almost to the point of failure in order to pull into the right lane and make a quick exit where i turned off the key. My brakes smoked and smelled for about 15 minutes in zero temperatures. After letting it sit for a while i tried to start it again and it immediately redlined. We were eventually able to restart and drive the car home at a very slow and cautious pace using back roads. This was a terrifying and very dangerous, life threatening situation for my self and my family. Four days after the "repair" at john holtz audi the throttle again froze when my wife had to slow for a stopping school bus. The exact same symptoms occured. I am a member of the audi quatro club. Through my exposure to many other audi owners i have learned that this problem is fairly common in very cold weather and the audi solution of cleaning the throttle body does not prevent the problem from recurring. The authorized audi mechanic who worked on my car in rochester used to work in vermont. He told me that the problem was often seen there, but infrequent in rochester, ny. He was relcuctant to discuss the situation extensively, saying" i have too many years in." a friend of mine is an aftermarket audi specialist who has documented this problem repeatedly. Art mayhew can be reached at 315 429 9902 the audi customer relations referral # is 030031445

The number of attempts to fix this issue will be six times. Audi has replaced the fuel sending units after the recall. The problem still exists. Audi has not fix the issue yet. I will be pursuing full remedy mandated by the lemon laws. Audi should be held accountable in not fixing the problem and also stating they did have fuel sending that would of resove theproblem while in fact they did not.

Audi claims that transmission fluid and filter never needs to be changed, this is not only incorrect, but this also causes transmission problems on a regular basis.this should not be told to the customer for it is a lie just so the customer has constant transmission problems while audi racks in the money. It is a scam and it should be eliminated from potential and existing audi customers.no oil was ever made not to break down and not ever be changed.a new audi owner usually listens to the dealership about their cars, and usually don't change the fluids or filters, hence transmission break downs and expensive repairs. Scam

My car was accelerating without the gas pedal being depressed.i was fighting to stop the car with the brake but failed to do so as the car was accelarating at high speeds on a major highway. I had got the car down from 50mph to 15 mph. At this point turned on my hazardous lights and pulled over to the shoulder. At 15 mph i safely shut my car off as i was unable to completely stop. After 30 seconds, i turn my car back on and see that the car is hittig redline of 7000 rpms in park mode. I shut my car down once more and wait another minute. I start the car and the car is back to normal. I am being told by many people in my car's internet forum that this has been happening to many people and it is a faulty throttle pedal. The pedal has a heating element that has failed due to the recent extremly cold weather.

Driver seat frame failed causing the seat to rock back resulting in momentary loss of control. Yh

Drivers seat rocks when braking hard after round 47-80k miles. This is common in audi's as i have searched audi forums and many owners are experiencing the same problem. Problem can be attributed to easily broken welds in seat frame. Www.audiworld.com/search "driver seat rocking".

1. Normal use of the car nothing special work and back. Slowly developed a rock back and forth.2. The drivers seat has developed a rock back and forth that moves the seat about 1" forward when accelerating and 1" back when breaking.my sister who drives the car is a petite girl and the movement of the seat is a huge deal since the seat is already adjusted far forward. According to the dealer it will only get worse.3. Taken to the dealer who quoted a big amount of money to replace a faulty seat frame. But no action has been taken.

Abs brake pump on 1999 audi a6 avant failed at approximately 80,000 miles. No accidents have occurred, however, audi refused to replace the pump citing the vehicle had too many miles.this car is just over 5 years old.it seems odd that a safety item like an abs brake pump would fail at this point in the vehicle's life.

This is a problem that many audi a6 owners have experienced. This occurs at random and the duration varies. While warning lights are on, braking performance is diminished as ebd is disabled and there is no abs.most owners including me have been told by the dealership that it'll cost about $2000 to fix the issue. They seem to be saying the abs control module is the one that needs to be replaced. I feel since its a wide spread problem with this vehicle and it involves the abs system which could cause an incident if one did not know the effects when they experience the problem; this issue has to be reported to the nhtsa.

I drive a 1999 audi a6 avant which is our primary family car.while driving the car one day, the car's abs warning indicator light comes on and stays illuminated until the car is shut off.at the same time the red brake warning light flashes on and off until the car is turned off.this same thing happens every time the car is turned on. Despite the flashing warning lights, the brakes operated normally on dry pavement.however, on wet, snowy pavement the abs did not work when braking for a stop.i called the audi dealer to make an appointment for this problem (and other issues) because i was concerned about the safety of the brakes especially during the winter.the person i spoke with at the audi dealership did not sound alarmed or very concerned about the warning lights for the abs and the brake.i asked again about the safety issue, and the person said i would be fine and made an appointment for me for two and a half weeks later.we drove the car carefully for the next two and a half weeks until our appointment at audi.before even looking at the car, audi service desk said that the warning lights were probably, more than likely the abs control module.i was told it would cost $975 to replace the abs control module. I didn't have the dealership replace that abs module yet because i needed other repairs first.after researching the abs control module online and after talking to a few people i realize that is a very common problem for this make and model car and for other audi cars but there is no recall campaign in effect for the batch of faulty abs modules.i live in minnesota where there is potential to be snow 5 months out of the year.i bought this car used because of all the safety features that are useful in snowy weather. To have the abs not functioning properly and then to realize that this is a common problem in this make of car seems to me to be a safety issue that should be addressed by the manufacture.audi should recall the abs module. Thanks.

Driving home tonight my car all of a sudden started accelerating (i drive an audi a6 1999). Using the brakes i was able to slow it down enough to get off the freeway though my brakes seemed to be fighting against the car. I rolled through two stop signs as my car would not stop and luckily avoiding the other cars waiting there i was able to put my car in park and turn off the engine.i waited ten minutes or so and tried starting my car. The engine revved to 4 to 5000 rpms so, i quickly shut it off again.i waited again, tried it once more and the car started fine.i drove home, called the dealership and was told i could be seen on 02/14/11.four days from now.this is the second time this has happened.

(1) abs/brake light indicators appeared on the dash. The amber (abs light) stays on while the red brake light blinks.an audible alert sounds for 3 seconds, but the lights stay on. This indicates that the abs control module is malfunctioning, thus loosing abs abilities. (2) after researching through audi forums (audiworld.com or audiforums.com), i discovered this is a common occurrence in audi's (1997-2001), including a4's, a6's and vw passats.it is speculated that water or moisture seeks into the module computer board, thus shorts it out. It was confirmed by my audi dealer that my abs unit is defective. I received a $2,400 estimate to have it repaired. (3) nothing, too expensive- my bigger issue here is safety- most audi/vw owners aren't aware that this is a recurring/frequent problem in their cars, because it's usually caught under warranty. If you?re like me and have an expired warranty you are paying through the nose. I called audi of america to alert them about this defect and asked them to recall it nationally- they said no because my car is older. To that point, why did they recall the throttle body, lower control arms and a plastic wire protector on 12/15/04 if my car is so-called "older?" again they can't justify it. That leads me to believe that it would cost them too much money! i am hoping that someone doesn't get injured because of money or it takes an accident to get this (abs module) defect recalled, then i am sure audi will end up paying 10x more.please make this recall happen as well as ask audi to inform their owners about this problem.

Abs light stays on..took to dealer and they said faulty control module..$@$1000.00 to repair... All of a sudden my abs light came on in my 1999 audi a6, and the brake light started flashing. I had a full loss of my abs brakes on icy winter roads. I eventually slid off the road and hit a fence. The abs control module on my car had failed, and i've read posts of several hundreds other having the same problem. In my car it is a constant error, and no-one but audi can fix the problem. I also contacted audi, which claims that the abs system disabling is not a safety concern. When there's a chance that your abs (something you've relied on for years) suddenly shuts down because of a way too common error, it is a major safety concern. I was lucky i only got some dents to my car, but if audi had recalled these i wouldn't have had to get repairs done to my car. Unfortunately someone will probably have to die before this safety concern is taken seriously and audi will do a recall.

Recall to replace a vacuum by-pass to remedy a potential failure of th power assist to brake has not been performed due to lack of parts.nlm

The heated steering wheel became too hot while being used and began to smoke.when the consumer turned the system off the heat subsided.the dealer wanted to replace the entire steering column instead of disconnecting the heating device.

Audi a6 customer states that after receiving a recall notice she took her car in for repairs and was given a larger bill for other things that need to be repaired**ccthe consumer stated the dealer made repairs to the steering and engine. Update

1999 audi a6 avant heated steering wheel.wheel generally heats at 12, 2, 5, 7 and 10 o'clock positions.on this particular occasion, i was driving at about 45 mph with my hands at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions.i initiated a right turn that required my hands on the 12 and 7 o'clock positions.however, these two spots were too hot to hold.my instant reaction to the high heat was to jerk my hands from the wheel.for that instance, my focus shifted from driving to the heat of the wheel.vehicle control was maintained.no accident.

My 1999 audi a6 avant's heated steering wheel would overheat to the point i could not touch it. It caused the ignition swith's wires to melt and i had to have the ignition switch replaced by audi and the heated wheel deactivated. The failed ignition switch caused my headlights, horn, windshieldwipers to not work. Everything now works after the switch was replaced and the steering wheel heater deavctivated by my audi dealer.

Heated steering wheel extremely hot causing the steering wheel to get warp and melt(you can smell the burning, steering wheel as an indentation with burn makes)

My 1999 audi a6 avant is equipped with the cold weather package.this package includes heated seats and steering wheel.when the driver's seat heater is turned on it activates the steering wheel heater.on 12/13/02 in using this heater the steering wheel became hot enough to burn my hand and began to fill the car with smoke.it melted the foam under the leather cover.if i had not turned off the seat/steering wheel heater i believe the steering wheel would have caught fire.my independent repair shop indicates there is a short in the wheel that will require replacement.i checked an enthusiast internet site (audiworld.com) and did a search of similar problems.i found several other audi models had similar problems. 00 v 414 000/vw tie rods: consumer states, "this recall was performed on march 10, 2001". The vehicle was at the dealer for routine inspection. The mechanic informed the consumer that the tie rods needed to be replaces again. The consumer would like to know is this considered normal? that the problem has recurred with less then 48,015 miles of wear since the recall work was performed the dealer has been notified.

1999 audi a-6 quattro, tie rod end replaced.tie rod recall was done when the vehicle had 13187 miles on it.at 60806 the tie rods had to be replaced again.the transmission leaked.

Dealership refused to performcontrol armrecall repairsunless consumer paid to have the tie rod done by them.

The consumers audi a6 quattro has problems withboth upper control arms being loose. Both front outer cv split open and leaked and front prop shaft leaked.the left front tie rod was loose.

I went to the dealer for a service bulletin i received and they told me my tie rods were worn out. There is a recal nhtsa recall campaign number: 00v414000 andl(99v248000) for 99 a6 that says the tie rods wear out due to the seal failing. What do i need to do for audi to address this.

Front suspension failures.audi a6 front control arms and tie rod ends seem to fail prematurely.i have had to replace first 3 of the left control arms and tie rod end, and then 2 months later 3 of the right control arms and tie rod end on my 1999 audi a6 with 53,000 miles.*la

Front bumper covers are too low and are getting caught on low parking spot cement wheel stops.

Bumper is so low that it catches on parking lot bumper guards.dealer refused to pay.have to come to almost a complete stop at any low points in the roadway.vin #[xxx] (your program refused to accept).information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The front end is too low for parking at the curb, i have had to replace 2 front bumpers... Very expensive.

Front bumper assembly design is a problem, low ground clearence and lip at the end of the bumper assembly allows the bumper to get caught on parking curbs.the bumper provides on structural resistance and significant damage is cause at very low speeds.

Faulty front bumper design is causingit to get caught in 6 inch curbing, resulting in bumperripping, and making fender press against tires.

Dear gentlemen: this is a cause for serious concern. The design of audi a6's front bumper is flawed. It is extremely low, and when you park the bottom part of the bumper gets stuck in the concrete slab placed in parking lots. Slowly the bumper starts to separate from the rest of the body. If this happens at night and the driver is unaware of this, that it could fall off, causing a serious accident involving not only the owner of the audi, but those that trail behind, who most certainly get hit by the flying bumper. I have already brought my car twice to audi for this problem, and on both ocassions the company's official position is that it is the driver's fault. Unofficially (i happen to deal with some very decent folks at the collection, the largest audi dealership in miami)they acknowledge the flaw, its recurrence with other owners, and can't really do much about it except send me to a reputable body shop. Labor to fix this runs at around $ 550 per incident. The problem is that this is happening to everyone who owns a 1999 a6. As a matter of fact, today there were three with the same problem, and one in the body shop around the corner. The body shop owner told me they fix several of these every week. Obviously there has got to be something seriously wrong with this car when everyone's bumper gets ripped off in standard parking lots. Obviously the us dot or whoever is responsible for auto safety design has not deemed this important enough for a recall, until someone dies or some serious accident occurs in a major highway in this country. I believe you would be doing consumers and road safety a big favor by investigating this potentially serious safety matter. I tried audi's main office, and they just "washed their hands"sending me to the nearest body shop and to charge it to my insurance company. Way to go, audi !!!! sincerely yours, oscar cury.

Scam

I recently brought our 1999 audi a-6 in for a recall related to inspection of the front suspension lower control arms to see if the boots were degraded.one was and it was replaced.the surprise came when i was told they found another problem not covered by a recall or warranty - that isthe left tie rod required replacement.doing research i found that recalls 99v248000 and 00v414000 required inspection of the tie rod seals.for some reason, my car was not covered by the recall - this is what i was told.further, i have seen in this web site complaints from other owners of 99 a-6s re the same problem.and i heard one person in my dealers service dept. Waiting room griping about this problem too.i believe that all 1999 audi a-6s should be recalled for inspection of this problem.at the very least, you should be opening an investigation - this is a potentially dangerous problem - just like your recent recall of dodge suvs and trucks. Furthermore, those of us who have paid severely hundred dollars to have this potentially dangerous problem fixed should be reimbursed.

Control arm bearings of the front suspension on my audi a6 2.8 quattro wagon (my 1999) show excessive wear after ~80,000 mls. Oem seems to be aware of since it delivers complete repair kits that include all control arms instead since 2003. Same front suspension is also used on vw passat and audi a4 all with the same issues. Recall in germany was done. Why not in usa?

I own a 1999 audi and i recently started to hear a clunking noise in the frontend. During an oil change the audi dealer told me that my control arm bushings were going bad. I did not get them replaced at that time. Afew weeks later i was on the internet and read about a controlarm bushing recall for the 1999 audi.i called the dealership they had heard of the upcoming recall but has no paperwork on it. Then i called the audi headquarters they told me that it the recall was under investigation. I am sure my car is part of this recall. I also read that at low speeds the effected part can come loose and make my tire fall of the car. I do not want to spend the $1000 to get this fixed if it is a recall. I have recived no help from audi to see wether my car will be in the recall or not.

I have had a frightening experience with our 1999 audi a6.when coming to a stop in front of our house, the car began to accelerate and i had to stand on the brake in order to not crash into another car.when i threw it in park it revved to the red line until i turned it off.this is the second time it has happened in a week or so.this is my wife's car and i am terrified that this might happen to her...i called an audi customer advocate and they said that there was no listing for a recall for that problem on our car.

On the passenger side of the interior, is a high gloss polished wood grain panel. The panel is angled such that when the sunlight hits it from the right rear, it reflects a blinding and very distracting glare that interferes with the driver's ability to concentrate on the road. I have contacted both the dealer and audi usa but neither are willing to correct the problem.

On the morning of november 20, 2010, i was pulling in to a parking space at the local library, approximately 10 minutes from my home.as i was making the turn to pull into the parking space, i heard the engine rev, and the car accelerated as though the cruise control had "kicked in" and my brake would not stop the car.rather than hit a car that was parked in front of my parking space, i turned the vehicle to go up a curb and hit a tree.once the tree stopped the car, i was able to put the car in reverse, back down off the curb, put the car in park, and pull out the key.oil was pouring out of the vehicle and it had to be towed to my home, was examined by my insurance company, and was written off as a total loss.

When stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle surged forward. The consumer was able to control the vehicle and pulled off the road. The consumer will contact the dealer about this issue. Please provide any further details.

I was traveling on pa route 476 southbound approximately 8:30 pm, maintaining a constant speed of approximately 65 mph.the thermometer in my car reported an ambient exterior temperature of between 4 and 8 f.the cruise control switch was in the standby position but cruise control was not activated.i began to notice that the car was maintaining speed without depressing the accelerator pedal.in fact, when traveling on level ground, the car accelerated to 80 mph until i depressed the brake pedal.the tachometer reported a constant engine speed of 2400 rpm with no pressure on the accelerator pedal.i attempted to change the engine speed by activating and deactivating cruise control, which did not respond at all.i next tapped the brakes to see if this would disengage a potential cruise control malfunction, again to no avail.the accelerator pedal was free of any obstructions and moved freely under my foot.as i approached the toll plaza, i required significant brake pressure to slow the vehicle down to approximately 15 mph.with full brake force, the vehicle would slow to approximately 5 mph but would not stop.i then put the transmission in neutral and the car stopped but the engine revved in excess of 6,000 rpm.i immediately shut the engine off.upon restarting the car, the idle speed was normal.thinking that the problem was icing and now resolved, i continued into philadelphia without incident.upon my return to allentown the same night (approximately 10:30 pm), also on route 476, i experienced another episode of a stuck accelerator.i had been traveling at 65 mph for about 30 minutes when the problem recurred.the ambient temperature was 3 f and the engine speed maintained 1800 ? 2000 rpm without any accelerator pedal pressure.again, in order to stop the car, i had to place the transmission in neutral and quickly turn off the ignition key to avoid further engine damage.

Car:1999 audi avant wagon1.the car was left outside during the winter of 2008/9 and unused for several months.in sprint of 2009, the car was jump started and this is when the problems started occurring.2.regardless of cold weather, the car will accelerate.more specifically, when the gas pedal is released, the car will not decelerate.this means the car will propel itself forward.without depressing the gas pedal, the car will sometimes achieve a speed of 40-45 mph.by pushing the pedal down and releasing it quickly (pumping the pedal), the throttle will release and the car will come back down to idle speed.this occurs not every time but approximate 1 out of 10 times that the car is driven.3.the tube that leads to the throttle, the accelerator cable, and the throttle body have all been replaced.there is a recall on the throttle body on this car related to this specific issue but the recall is only based on very cold ambient weather.i am experiencing this issue during warm weather also.the mechanic now thinks this is due theelectronic control module (ecm).

On a below zero day the throttle on my 1999 audi a6 quattro was fully engaged after lifting off the pedal.car was stopped only killing the engine via the ignition.vehicle was restarted and problem continued.after jostling the pedal and restarting vehicle was fine.

1999 audi a6 quattro suddenly accelerated.i was pulling into a parking slot at maybe 5 mph, my foot was lightly pressing on the brake pedal, as i was nearly in the parking stall. The engine was at idle speed.as i coasted into the parking stall with my foot on the brake pedal the engine suddenly and without any prior warning revved up to above 3000 rpm. The car lurched forward hitting the parking curb directly in front of me.i immediately applied more pressure to the brake pedal to keep the car from jumping over the curb, and shifted the gear selector into n.the engine then revved even higher, at which point i turned off the key.with the key off, i moved the gear selector to p, and restarted the engine.the vehicle then ran idled at normal speed, and drove normally to my home about 1/4 mile away.i'm afraid to drive the vehicle.this is the second time this has happened; the first time it happened was as i was coasting to a stop at a red traffic light.again my foot was on the brake and the engine was returning to idle speed. As i approached the intersection the engine revved causing me to coast through the intersection before being able to bring the vehicle to a full stop, again by applying strong breaking force.i then put the transmission in n and the engine revved higher, so i switched off the key. Thankfully the other vehicles had already cleared the intersection and there was no collision.when i restarted the vehicle, it idled and drove as normal again.the outside temperature was above 45 degrees fahrenheit and the pavement was dry in both cases.

Consumer stated car just took off at a high rate of speed, and it almost hit another car, and son was nearly killed.it was hard to believe until consumer drove the car 3 weeks ago in temperature of 12 degrees.consumer was pulling off the northway onto route headed west when the car just took off by itself.consumer checked cruise control to see if it was on, it was not on.

Vehicle accelerated three times in below zero degree weather. *ph *sc

While driving 60 mph on the freeway, the car accelerated on its own to 72 mph as if going into cruise control.confirmed the cruise control switch was turned off.applied the brakes seven times.car did not respond to braking.engine seemed to race against the brakes.i put the car in neutral, moved to side of the road.applied the hand brake.turned key off.car slowed then stopped.since this incident the car was test driven twice by mechanics, during which it seemed to operate normally.on january 27, 2015 the car was taken tothe local dealer, bellevue audi, for diagnosis.awaiting results.

The throttle stuck on my '99 audi a6 2.8 quattro at 70 mph on interstate i-65 in indianapolis, in. It took both feet on the brake to stop the vehicle and still almost hit someone in the rear (scary). I put the car in park, it red-lined and iturned off the ignition. When i restarted the car the throttle had reset. Fortunately my wife was not driving.

When the temperature drops below zero, the car accelerates even after you take your foot off the gas pedal. It happened several times last winter and again during this last cold spell in january. We were lucky to be able to get the car off the road and stopped. Downshifting and heavy braking almost didn't get it stopped. The car went to the shop again for a bandaid fix but i was told by the dealership that sometimes this particular car just does that. I was charged $130.00 for them to clean the throttle body and told that i should remove the air filter and clean the housing myself occasionally. This is absolutely unacceptable.

Throttle stuck. It happened duringsub zeroweather while consumer was drivingabout 70 mph on a highway. Consumer had to use both feet on the brakes to pull over. When consumer put vehicle in park it red lined.consumer shut vehicle off , and turned it back on without any problems. Then, dealer looked it over, and said they couldn't find any problems with the vehicle.

- the contact stated that the 1999 audi a6 quattrohad problems with acceleration.the vehicle accelerated on 02/05/07.the contact'swife was driving at 65 mph when the vehicle accelerated on its own.the contact stated the only way the vehicle stopped was to push the brake pedal with both feet.the contactcalled the dealership and had an appointment set up for today 02/12/07. It happened again on 02/09/07.while driving the vehicle, and she was at a complete stop made a right turn and slowly accelerated to 45 mph.the road surface was completely dry, the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly.the gas pedal went to the floor by itself without her pushing it to the floor.the driver applied the brakes with the right foot and the vehicle didn't stop. Then tried to pull the accelerator pedal up withthe oe to stop the acceleration.she tried to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road, but the vehicle didn't decrease in speed. While trying to get the vehicle to come to a stop she then hit a tree.she hit the tree off the center of the front of the vehicle, and airbag didn't deploy, but the seat belt did restrain her. The contacts wifesustained neck and sternum injuries. And was taken to the hospital by an ambulance. There was a police report.the current mileage was 14000.

Groza took the vehicle to dealer, anddealer could find anything wrong with the car.

Consumer'swife had abad experience last month with the cruise control.she had the cruise set at 75 mph and hit the brakes to turn off the cruise control, but vehicle did not respond.she turned off the switch on the steering column, and that did not stop the cruise control. She put both feet on the brakes and tried to stop vehicle, but the engine continued to run.fortunately, consumerwas able to power brake the vehicle, and bring it over to the shoulder of the highway. Then, broughtthe speed down enough to slam the transmission into park, and abruptly stop the vehicle's motion.all four wheels were smoking, andshe turned the vehicle off. She called the maplewood audi dealer, where consumer had the car in for full service and scheduled a checkup.vehicle was towed to the dealer, and kept for diagnosticinvestigation by the technician. When the technician turned the vehicle on engine revved and rpms went back up.the service department pulled the throttle cable from vehicle. And discovered cracks in the housing of the cable. But were not certain that this was the problem.it was technician's guess. Consumer's wife questionedthis because of the cruise controlwhich was not cable related.

For the past several winters, my 1999 audi a6 2.8 quattro has had a failure in its cruise control mechanism.when ever it gets cold the cruise control often does not engage, and if it is really cold it may disengage after running for awhile even on level pavement (i.e. Not undo engine strain-normal for disengagement).the major problem lies in that, at least twice, even though the cruise control has not been made to engage on prior attempts, it has engaged latter on its own, without prompting, bringing the car up to speed. Case in point: one time when coming into a residential area, it suddenly engaged, and started to try and come up to highway speeds. The dealership has tried several attempts to rectify this fault, but has been unable to find a solution.i have even offered to drive my car up to their national headquarters for their engineers to look at. Now audi usa, will do no more toward this effort, in what i consider a serious and possible dangerous matter.

While driving during any snow the wheels get packed with ice and or snow to the point where the balance is severely thrown off necessitating stopping to clean out the wheels repeatedly in order to operate the car safely.steering is compromised and the car shakes violently at speeds over 55-60 mph.not to mention having to get out of the automobile on the roadside in a snowstorm to clean out the wheels.this poses both operational and situational safety concerns.i think audi should supply wheels which are appropriate for winter driving, especially in this all-wheel drive automobile.

Consumer was traveling about 55mph on highwayand it felt like an explosion.he was able to pull over to side. Driver's side front wheel was split all the way around. Inner rim separated fromouter rim.there were no injuries.dealership as aware ofproblem.

Rear rims failed at highway speed after hitting a small object, similar to a small tree branch. The left rear rim was completely ruined and instantly caused the tire to deflate, similar to a blowout. The "ring" of the rim, on which the tire is mounted, separated from the flat circle the gets bolted onto the axel assembly. The right rear was damaged enough to require replacement, according to the dealer, although i could not see any damage.(because of work hours, i was never able to talk to the dealer's rep in person.) the car had not been in any serious incidents prior to accident. The dealer and audi customer relations both claimed it was a non-warrantee item.
