While driving 50-55 mph consumer noticed smoke coming out of driver's air bag. Consumer immediately pulled over, turned the engine off and out, and withintwo minutesvehiclewas on fire.
Airbag warning light stayed on after the engine started - diagnostics conducted at a audi dealership. Customer informed by service department that the airbag unit is faulty and whole unit needs to be changed (cost quosted $800) - also informed "need" left tie rod end (previous similar complaint regarding tie rod on nhtsa web site)

The contact owns a 1998 audi a6. The contact stated that the vehicle caught on fire. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the dashboard wires had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage and vin was not available.
On february 4, 2006 i was driving northbound on interstate 95, between exits 15 and 16 in norwalk, connecticut.i was the only occupant of the car, and i was driving in the middle lane at approximately 60 miles per hour.the time was approximately 12:30 pm.smoke and flames suddenly started pouring out of the vents on the dashboard.there was no prior warning that something was wrong with the car, so there was no opportunity to slow down or pull over to the side of the road.the interior of the car quickly filled with black smoke and the dashboard was covered with fire.the steering wheel locked up and it wouldn't turn at all.although i could not steer, the car drifted to the right lane.while smoke and flames were pouring out of the dashboard, and the car was still moving, i opened the passenger side door and jumped out of the car.my back hit the guardrail on the right side of the highway and i fell to the ground.within a minute the car was engulfed in smoke and flames.the interior of the car and all of its contents were completely destroyed by fire.i suffered numerous injuries including smoke inhalation, a concussion, injuries to my neck, back, ribs, legs and pelvis, post traumatic stress disorder, and other injuries.
Audi could not fix multiple problems. Told me to sell it. No safety defect listed within summary.
A defectiveignition switch caused headlights and instrument panel lights to go out. Contacted dealer ,and the dealerwas not willing to do anything.
Dt: on may 31 2005 while driving smelled a burning odor. Then, smoke came from air vents, andsmoke got worse.while speaking w/ 911 flames began to come from the air vents.fireappeared to come from the air vents. Vehicle was operating normally before the fire broke out.there was no warning or codes to owner's knowledge. It was unknown what caused the fire. Owner believedit wasan electrical fire. The fire department had a hard time extinguishing the fire, and were unsure as to the cause of the fire.a police report filed. Car was serviced regularly and records were available.the car was moved to a storage facility behind a gas station. The insurance company took possession of the vehicle, and considered ita total loss. Audicontacted the owneraboutan investigation.there were other recalls but nothing about this vehicle.
A defectiveignition switch caused headlights and instrument panel lights to go out. Contacted dealer ,and the dealerwas not willing to do anything.
While driving 40 mph smoke started to appear inside the vehicle that came outfrom the dashboard. A fire started. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
It is very difficult to read the instrument panel during the day when the headlights are on. The instrument panel light dim when the headlight are turn on. As you know it is a recommended safety practice to run during daylight with headlight on. I find it difficult to get the information i need under these circumstances. This is a distinct safety hazard in my opinion and may have already caused accidents. The correct is clear. Make the instrument panel light brighter. I have asked for help from audi on several occasions. They have done nothing although one customer service person told me to see my eye doctor. This should be corrected. A quick glance at instruments should be possible at any time. If you have to study hard-to-see instruments instead of looking at the road, danger lurks.
While drivingengine started missing. Smoke began to come out of the shifter and dashboard.the dashboard caught on fire.the vehicle was totaled.
98 a6 quattro, leaks oil, the car's been in the shop 4 times for this issue(in 2 years time frame), the lower pan gasket has been replaced twice as well as the oil cap. Last time i had the audi service check it out i have been told they need to take the whole engine apart= huge bill. I see i am not the only one having the "hard to fix" oil leak.
Audi could not fix multiple problems. Told me to sell it. No safety defect listed within summary.
Lower and upper gaskets are leaking. These leaks drop on hot parts of the engine and create smoke fume. I had the lower gasket replaced for about $500. I know thatsimilar services are done 2 more times in the history of this car for the exact problem. I doubt that there is a design issue on this area.
This automobile has performed poorly since its purchase. Within 2 weeks of purchase the engine failed and the car would not start and needed to be towed to the dealership.6 months later the fuel sending gauge failed when the auto ran out of gas.the fuel sending unit was replaced 2 times and i was told the new ones were not better than the original.the 3rd time this occured the dealership filed down the contact points.finally a year later an official recall came out from audi corporation to replace the fuel sending unit.the car has not performed well since its purchase and gets very poor gas milage.the computer systems are not sending proper signals to other parts of the car and it hesitates on start up and has difficulty in shifting from first to second to third gear, resulting in extrememy poor gas mileage. The dealership indicated that audi made some software changes at some point but did not know when nor if there were anything that could be done to correct this car's problems. I have driven a 1999 a6 and there is no comparison between the cars.neither the 22k nor 30k maintenance service has made any change to this car's poor performance. I have no choice but to dispose of the auto in order to feel the safety and security i desired from audi.i am hoping audi will make proper amends to take this car back and replace it with a properly working model.
Fire hazard due to oil leaking onto exhaust.
Had received recall notice (#98v134000) & called dealer for appointment.on appointed day took vehicle to dealer. After arriving, was informed no work would be done on vehicle. Vehicle was not brought at binner dealer. Service manager told owner "to leave & do not come back". Manufacturer said "nothing can be done, and not to bring vehicle back again." dealership is independent.ak
Consumer contacteddealer regarding recall number 00v137000. Dealer has indicated thatparts were not available to take care of the faultygas gauge whichindicated inaccurate fuel reading. This causedvehicle to run out of fuel without warning. Problem has occurred prior to receiving the recall notice. Please provide any further details.
Left headlight signal keeps going out. Consumer has had it repaired four times, and it has gone out again. Dealer has repaired it a number of times.
1998 audi a6: reverse lights remain on when driving forward. Many drivers behind me were concerned i was backing up. At night, it is dangerous.fuses are okay.*la
Front directional lights not working as they should. Took vehicleto dealer 6 times, replaced socket 4 times. Will work for short period of time ,then work intermittently only.
I am experiencing an issue with my vehicle that was recalled by the factory audi ag but my vehicle was not listed as one of the recalled vehicle. I am afraid of getting stranded due to an improper fuel reading. Please address this accordingly, thank you.
Back pressure develops while refueling, with the engine and ignition off, resulting in fuel being ejected from filler neck.this can and does result in significant fuel spillage with significant risk of injury or death from fire or explosion.this occurs erratically at pumps with a vapor recovery system.audi has already had a recall for this problem (campaign number:99v058000, date: 3/22/99) which instructs owners to refuel with the engine off and has added an updated label on the fuel filler door and new instructions in the owner's manual. This is inadequate as this back pressure develops when the engine and ignition are off.i have never refueled with the engine on.this has happened to me multiple times and to date audi has no solution.my current vehicle is in fact a replacement for a similar vehicle (vin : [xxx]) with the same problem that i purchased in january 1998.i am once again asking audi to take back my current vehicle as i feel that it is too dangerous to operate.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
A recall for the fuel sensor was issued.however, this vehicle was not included due to vin.
Back pressure develops when refueling with the engine and ignition off. Gasoline gushes out onto attendant, car and ground. Obviously, there is a risk of injury or death from fire or explosion. This has happened many times , so that we no longer fill our tank, as its not nearly as bad if we fill it only 3/4 full. It will still spray out, but not gush out.this is a serious problem which audi refuses to acknowledge as a defect, even though lives could be at risk.
O-ring seal of fuel pump has popped off, causing fuel spillage. Consumer drove vehicle for 3 miles and parked vehicle, and within that time frame the vehicle lost 5-6 gallons of fuel . Fire department were called to the scene and stated the amount of spillage was a serious fire hazard.
Recall 00v137000. Consumer has been in constant contact withdealer and manufacturer about recall, andpartswere not available.
Fuel injection system did not disengage when brakes were applied, engine continued to rev at 1600 to 1800 rpm with brakes fully engaged.
I purchased a used 98 audi a6 pn 4/28/07. When i purchased the car, the only issues with the car were this gassy smell inside the car when you turn on the heat, and a smoke coming from the some pipe. My mechanic told me that the breather was cut, and it had to be replaced . After fixing the problem which i had to pay for. The check engine light went on. Could not do the inspection because of that problem. A few days later i started while driving i hear this beeping sound. The fuel needle immediately went down to empty, and back up again showing that i had half a tank of gas. I went to check it again. The mechanic could not see anything. So i decided to make an appointment with the dealer. In the mean time, i decided to fill up my gas tank. That's when i realized a gas smell coming from outside the car. Took the vehicle to another mechanic on my way home, to find out that my gas tank was leaking because there is a crack and i could not drive the car under such conditions because the car can set on fire while i am driving it.
(1) purchased auto 10/7/05. Pick-up in miami. Auto has always been operated in florida climate. Drove car to pennsylvania arriving on 10/9/05. On 10/13/05 detected a strong smell of gasoline immediately after refueling and parking in garage. (this was first time car was refueled in pennsylvania and parked in garage).(2) problem diagnosed as a leak in a seam of the plastic gas tank of the audi a6. Has caused no injuries as yet. Obvious consequence is foul odor and , more importantly, a hazard to the environment and a potential fire hazard.carfax vehicle history shows no record of the car being involved in an accident, not have i experienced one since purchasing.(3) licensed repair shop is currently searching for replacement gas tank and determining the approximate labor cost to replace.

Fuel gauge does not register the correct levels of fuel due to defective sensor within the gas tank.please give any further details.
Air pressure builds up inside the gas tank causing gasoline to spray out of the tank onto the consumer, vehicle, and ground, the gas will continue to spray out under pressure after the nozzle is removed from the tank filler neck.
Consumer received recall 00v137, however consumer is angry that on the letter it states repair would be done by august 7, 2000, consumer finally spoke with someone in december and was notified that parts were at the dealer.

The fuel gauge malfunction indicating full while the tank was empty. Yh
I think when audi has recalls, they should have parts at dealers, currently dealers are unable to implement recalls that are several months old.in addition, the fuel guages are inaccurate and they've yet to issue a recall and provide appropriate parts to dealers for repairs
Consumer states he could smell a strong smell of gasoline in the garage, a mechanic found a fuel leak due to a split in the return line plastic nipple, this allowed fuel to drip on the exhaust pipe when the tank was more than half filled, the whole fuel tank assembly was replaced. *scc
1998 audi a6 fuel tank started leaking at the seams.the independent mechanic found no damage to the tank.garagefull of gas fumes and fuel was dripping under the car. *ph
Fuelgaugedoes not register the correct amount of fuel, causing the driver to think that thereis fuel in the gas tank when, in reality, the tank is empty. This problem could cause a crash because the vehicle just bucks and dies without warning.vehicle was towed to a audi dealer for repairs. A fuel sending unit has been ordered. Audi is aware of the problem.repair has been made.
Automobile has run out of gas on 3 separate occasions with fuel gauge displaying anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 level. Additionally, computer shows anywhere from 70 to 280 miles left until empty. I have been left stranded on the highway on these occasions- twice having to walk to the nearest gas station in terrible weather, once a tow service halped me on the taconic state parkway. Audi replaced all 3 "sending units" on jan 26, 1999 and october 15, 1999. Fuel gauge/sending units have again malfunctioned- i.e. After driving 300 miles on 1 tank of gas, gauge at the 3/4 full level, computer shows 375 miles to empty- an even greater number than previously shown. Contacted both dealership(new country audi) and audi of america inc. I was advised that they are aware of the problem, 3 out of 5 audi a6's have the problem and they do not know when the parts necessary to fix the problem will be available.
Consumer was unable to have recall 00v-137 for the fuel tank performed due to lack of parts, four months have passed and parts are still not available.nlm
Becasue the fuel indicator needle does not register the correct amount of fuel, the vehicle ran out of fuel. Owner had the same problemin december of 1998. The problem has not been corrected. The part to correct this problem is being redesigned.

Whenconsumer fills up the fuel tank, fuel gauge won't indicate the amount of fuel. Also, vehicle ha s had already two recalls on the tie rods.
Mr. Lewy, who owns gas station, reported that when trying to refuel, after approximately 2 gallons are pumped into vehicle, fuel spits back with great force, expelling large gush of gasoline. Vehicle owned by hoffman motors.

Gas gauge is indictating that fuel was available, but there was no gas in tank due to defective fuel tank sender, causing consumer to get stranded. Manufacturerwas aware that this was a widepsread defect. But, refused to issuea recall .tsb has been issued .dealer will replace sender with a new redesigned part. But part is on backorder.

I own a 1998 audi a6 quattro (2.8 liter engine). Last winter during a cold spell some part in the pcv valve froze suddenly while driving. This caused the throttle to be stuck at about 4,000 rpm and the car turned into a rocket. Fortunately, i could bring the car to a stop and nobody was hurt. It was quite an experience though, especially since the roads were snowy and icy that day. When i brought the car to the audi dealer i was told that "it may take a week because we are swamped with many other audi a6, all with the same problem. I was told that this is some sort of design flaw with this particular model/engine, and that this will happen again in very cold weather. In april i found a short article in "der spiegel" (the german equivalent to newsweek or time magazines), reporting that nhtsa took 16 audi a6 in to test for exactly this problem. What is your advice to customers? can you force audi to do something about it, since this appears to be a major safety issue?kindest regards and thank you in advance, hagen blaszyk, md

Vehicle ran out of gas - gauge showed 3/4 tank. Vehicle has had the gas gauge recall performed on it.
Fuel was found leaking from the rollover valve nipple on the fuel tank. This nipple has been known to crack when the metal ventilation line line adds stress to the plastic nipple. Gasoline was found in a puddle on the floor at the left/ rear of the car.audi has recalled and repaired this defect on later year a6s but audi of america, inc. Refused to repair the 1998 a6. The gas tank on the 98 a6 is identical to the gas tank on the recalled vehicles.the national highway safety administration has already determined that these fuel tanks present a serious fire hazard andparticipated in a recall. This recall needs to be expanded to include all a6 vehicles with the defective plastic nipple including the 1998 audi a6 in question.
A defectiveignition switch caused headlights and instrument panel lights to go out. Contacted dealer ,and the dealerwas not willing to do anything.
Door latch will pop up to opening. But when consumer opened door with door handle, door was still locked. Please provide further information.
Consumer noticed water coming from underneath the passenger side seat from the heating docks. This occurred aftervehicle was parked in the driveway in a rain storm over night.dealership indicated that this occurred because the drain located under the battery compartment, under the hood, got blocked up and water backed up into the cabin of the vehicle through the heating docks. This resultedin the transmission being submerged in water.
The passenger side floor of our audi a6 kept filling up with water while driving -- even though it was not raining. There was no drain in the floor to allow the water to exit, so we bailed it like a boat and finally punched a hole through the floor with a screwdriver. However, shortly thereafter the car stopped dead in the middle of the road: the brakes locked and the transmission failed to engage regardless of what gear it was placed in. By repeatedly turning the ignition off and then on again i was able to engage the transmission briefly and move the car three or four feet at a time until it was off the highway. My passengers and i were understandably frightened as there was traffic coming from both directions and we were unable to do anything about it. The car was flatbedded to the nearest dealer where ultimately it was diagnosed as having a clogged air conditioning cowl drain which caused condensed water to accumulate in the passenger floor and which ultimately shorted out the transmission and brake control computers which are located in the center tunnel.we were told that it was routine for audi dealers to inspect this drain for clogging, yet there is no mention of the need or importance to do this in the owner's manual, how to do it, or the implications for failing to do so. Our car has been serviced by an independent repair shop for some time and therefore this service has not been performed. Diagnosis of the problem and replacement of the computers will total approximately $4,000.00 none of which audi usa feels is its responsibility. Immediately prior to the shorting of the computers we were traveling south on i-95 at speeds in excess of 70 mph in heavy traffic (with two inches of water on the floor.) had the computers chosen this time and place to malfunction my entire family and i would likely be dead or severely injured. I believe action should be taken to remedy this dangerous design defect. Thank you.*la
I have an 1998 audi a6, 2.8l, v6, quattro, avant with a 115000 mls and my cars's rear seat, seat belt in (the middle passenger "belt shape, one") seat stop working and it is stuck in its open position about 15"-16" out.after talking to the audi dealer near home they said, yeah not working but sorry out of warranty, i asked is this a safety issue for this car? they said no! its not! i am not sure about that.is that ok a seat belt in rear seat hardly used by mebreak so easy?!i have seen many parents use this seat belt to secure there child's car seat to the car's seat? thank you.
Audi could not fix multiple problems. Told me to sell it. No safety defect listed within summary.
Antilock brake system (abs) control module is apparently failing or has failed.both the abs and brake lights on the dashboard illuminate irregularly accompanied by three loud warning tones.both lights likewise turn off without warning.dealer claims that no code is being returned from abs unit.advised that sometimes abs will be available and sometimes not.cost to replace abs control module was quoted at $2,400.advised to ignore warning lights and sounds if cost was unreasonable.
Complaint 1) heated steering wheel would burn hands in selected locatios before turning off. Dealer indicated to me they were aware of this and if i wanted it fixed would have to purchase a new steering wheel as my car was out of warranty. I feel this is a safety issue that should be handled by audi with replacement. Complaint 2) rear brake pads replaced three times on car with 50,000 miles. This does not make sense as front brakes take most of wear. At my last repair on 9/22/03, it cost me $418 dollars to replace rear pads and rotors. It appears something may be of bad design with replacement 3 times in 50,000 miles for rear brakes. Front replaced only once and not due to wear, but heat spotting creating noise.
Dear dot, i've a 1998 audi a6 quattro.my abs system shows warning yellow abs light and red flashing brake light at all time.i've taken my two shops and they both indicated that the abs unit is defective and needs replacement.they tested all 4 wheel sensors on the car and also mapped out the electrical system.the conclusion was a defective abs unit.i've done some research and other audi owner from 1998 - 2001 also have the same issues.if this system is known to be defective, it should be recalled in all fairness.i am pretty happy with this car, but the abs is an uncomfortable experience.it cost about $2000 to replace the abs unit and audi does not want to admit the problem.references:http://audi-vw-abs-recall.blogspot.comhttp://www.allworldauto.com/comments/audi_a4_avant_comments_and_complaints_65-34245-1.html

Intermittent abs/brake light 1998 audi a6 quattro 2.8l, audi dealer says it has faulty abs module which would need to be replaced. Cost: $2,148.00 plus labor. Nothing was done to correct the failure. Dealer says it is a common problem.
Braking system malfunctions when on slippery surfaces, driving straight and the brake pedal is lightly pressed.a single brake locks up causing the car to spin out of control.
I have a problem with the abs light that comes on often.is too expensive to pay for all this .can somebody do somethng about . Thanks.
Abs/brake light on all the time. I got my brakes changed, my mechanic checked it, and told me the abs system is malfunctioning.
Braking system malfunctions when on slippery surfaces, driving straight and the brake pedal is lightly pressed.a single brake locks up, causing the car to spin out of control.
The abs braking light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.driver noticed that while applying the brakesthe pedal went to floor, slowing down and then stopping.driver tookvehicle to the dealer, and the mechanic placed the vehicle on a diagnostic machine, and determined that the abs control unit module needed to be replaced.
1998 audi a6 with 130,000 miles; abs/brake lights on dash illuminate with piercing tones, first intermittently, now upon startup and drive off.manual states this is an emergency situation, and driver could possibly lose control of vehicle.dealer states repairs $1500.00+ for complete abs replacement...audi owner forums include many others with identical problems...no other repair options were offered by the dealer.
I own a 1998 audi a6. This vehicle has been driven approx 75 000 miles.several months ago the abs control unit (brakes) failed. I was quoted a price of $1085 by the dealership where i purchased the vehicle. There are no used parts available. When i made an appoitment to have the unit replaced i was informed that audi no longer manufactures the origional replacement part at a cost of $1085.rather, audi has remanufactured the replacement part and the new cost is approx $2000.00. I verified the cost of the remanufactured replacement part by calling a few dealerships. My complaint is that i believe that audi recognized that the original part was defective and that once the abs control unit failed it made abs braking inoperable and therefore unsafe. Rather than recall the 1998 a6 to replace the defective abs control unit, they allowed consumers to either drive with an unsafe control unit that could fail at any time ot pay almost $2000 to replace the defective part.
Abs computer malfunctioned.searched internet and found many similar problems with other owners of simiilar cars.
The vehicle's abs controller failed after less than 70000 miles. The consumer requested assistance from the manufacturer but was denied.
While drivingvehicle accelerates without warning. Brakes failed to stop vehicle, vehicle was put into park to gain control.please give any further details.
Consumer hears a grinding noise from the left front brakes.
After slowing for a left turn from main thoroughfare to side street, my brake pedalfailed to depress to slow the car down.i had to allow the car to coast to a slower speed and then to a stop.after clearing snow from the wheel wells and allowing the car to sit with the engine off for approximately 20 minutes, the brake pedal "unlocked" and i was able to depress the pedal once more.

Tie rods in the steering systems are damaged. Audi claims they had a recall on these rods and that the previous owner of the car had the service completed back in 2000. Yet, i still have problems now in 2006. I wonder if the fix audi implemented is really effective or not.
Tie rods are loose and worn out, allowing dust to enter intomechanism.a recall has been issued onvehicle's make and model; however, this vehicle is not included due tovin.
Dt: the contact owns a 1998 audi. The contact noticed noise in front suspension, play steering, looseness in steering, tire wear, and recall on lower control arm. During that recall realizedalso needed to replace the upper control arms. Took it tomechanic, where hewas told that the tie rod ends needed to be replaced. Suggested that it was all related .he told consumer that a recall was on the tie rod end. Audiclaimed this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.there was no recall on the upper control arms they referred him to the dealership for service. The dealership told consumer that because the vehicle was out of warranty audi would not do the repairs. No crashes. No police report. No crashes. No injuries.
After recall 99v248000 concerningtie rod failure. After recall repairs were done the problem recurred.dealership was notified, but would not repair free of charge again.

Interior and exterior door handles of the two front doors occasionally fail to unlatch the door around 10% of the time. Pulling on the door handle doesn't do anything - the door latch does not disengage. Locking and unlocking the door doesn't help. After several repeated attempts on the handle it may finally successfully unlatch the door. Sometimes it may also open from the opposite door handle (e.g. If the interior handle is not working, the exterior handle may work). *nlm
The front bumper sits so low that it caught on a parking space concrete stop--when i started backing out of the space, the bumper nearly ripped off the car.the bumper did not just scrape the concrete space stopper, but instead caught onto it, resulting in considerable damage to the bumper assembly.the concrete space stop was of normal size and in its proper position.the car simply sat so low, and is designed in such a way that it hooks onto the concrete stop when backing out.
Front bumper assembly is to low; not proper clearance for clearing curb when parking
Front bumper cleared 4-5 inch parking curb, however upon backing up, bumper catches on curb and tears off.
Front bumper became grossly damaged by a preformed concrete parking barrier.driver has no way of knowing that the bumper is being damaged because the bumper never touches the barrier.
Front bumper assembly torn away from vehicle, causing bumper and body damage.bumper 'grabbed' pre-formed cement parking barrier when placed in reverse.car did not touch barrier upon entering parking space.only upon placing vehicle in reverse did the bumper get caught and ripped away from body causing significant damage.this is the second time in the past six months that this has happened.
When consumer is inside and doors are locked won't be able to unlock t doors from inside due to a problem on the main power lock system. Dealer and manufacturer had been contacted.
The contact owns a 1998 audi a6. While traveling 25 mph, the contact noticed that the front end of the vehicle had suddenly dropped to the ground. I replaced a right front tie-rod in 7/03 and was just told my left front tie-rod also needs to be replaced.i called audi and was told there was no recall for my specific model, even though there was a recall for other 1998 audi a6 models. Checking the internet, it appears many other owners of the same year and model audi have had this same problem.
In feb. 2005 a local audi dealership informed me thatthere was a recall on my vehicle and the control arm on one side needed to be replaced. 2 months later (<2,400 miles) wyoming valley motors informed me that the contol arm on the other side of my vehicle needed to be replaced. I questioned why it was not covered due to the recent recall and they informed me it was out of the recall period. I asked them why the other side of the control arm was not checked in feb. And the service rep informed me that they indeed checked it. It was not communicated verbally to me nor was it documented on my usually detailed service invoice. I asked service rep that my only option is to assume that they checked it since it was not document. He stated that is correct. I contacted the manufacturer and am still waiting for a reply. Please let me know if you hanle a problem of this nature. If not, any direction in whom i need to contact regrding this frustrating issue will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
1998 audi a6 quattro.both front track arms had to be replaced at 67000 miles. Vehicle was undriveable. Dealer said cause was wear and tear. I don't think that a major component of the suspension should have to be replaced at this mileage. Dealer also said that they had more than a few cases on the same vehicle with similar mileage.
Control arms wear out prematurely causing worn tires.
Premature failure of control arms.*la

Lower left control arm bolts broke free from subframe, damaging both front axles, bending subframe and flattening the front left tire. I was fortunate to get the vehicle from the travel lane without causing an accident. This is not a wear and tear part and should not have failed.
When vehicle reached 30,000 miles control arms dried out and created an annoying sound.a black rubber compound was added to eleviate the problem; however, the problem still exists.

While driving at any speed, the consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front of the vehicle. Suddenly the vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. The consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and drove it to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the consumer that the upper ball joints needed to be replaced.please provide further details.
While having the front tires replaced, the mechanic informed the consumer that both upper ball joints were cracked.please provide any further information.
Tires were worn out, causing vehicle to vibrate at 55mph, and could cause loss in steering. Cause unknown. Dealer notified. Size/dot unknown.

Nhtsa recall already for same problem on other 1998 audi a-6.dt
This vehicle has done this appx 4 to 5 times. No safety defect listed within summary.

I was rear-ended at a stop light on a limited access highway by a 1998 audi a6.the person driving the car stated that her car was accelerating even when she took her foot off the gas and stepped on the brakes.she had managed to stop the car about 15 feet behind me, but, when she took her foot off the brake, she hit me at about 10 mph
I own a 1998 audi a6 which on several occasions has experienced sudden unintended acceleration. While attempting to slow the vehicle by braking for a stop, the engine starts to accelerate and rev all the way to 6000 rpms. The only way to avoid an accident was the depress the brake pedal as hard as possible, put the gear selector in neutral, and turn the engine off. After restarting the engine, the vehicle would operate in a normal fashion.this problem extremely dangerous situation has occurred 3 times since i purchased the vehicle (audi certified pre-owned) and has been reported to the local audi dealer on several occasions. They can find nothing wrong with the car.
1998 audi a6 quattro: while driving on the highway coming to the exit ramp for m y home the car wouldnt stop. When the brakes were applied the engine kept on revving as if the cruise control was set, however it was off. Couldn't stop the car until luckily at the last minute the engine died and an accident with a stopped car at the end of the ramp was avoided. Two small children were in the car at the time and both were terrified. I calledthe local audi dealer and they told me they have never heard of anything like that ever happening before. Then i see this site and realize that it has!!! the car just wouldn't stop!!!
Dt*:the contact stated while traveling 40mph and attempting to pass another vehicle, the throttle stuck in an open position.the brakes were applied; the vehicle was shifted into neutral and moved to the side of the road.the vehicle's engine was turned off and on in an attempt to release the throttle, but this attempt failed and the engine raced with the transmission in park. The vehicle was towed to the contacts home and the dealer has been alerted.
Fuel injection system did not disengage when brakes were applied, engine continued to rev at 1600 to 1800 rpm with brakes fully engaged.
- the contact owns a 1998 audi a6.there recall 04v495000 in october 2004concerning vehicle speed control. On 3/08/07 the contact was driving at 65 mph and without warning the vehicle accelerated to 90 mph.the contact was unable to reduce the speed, engage the brakes or place the vehicle in neutral.the contact had to force the vehicle in park with the transmission grinding and turned the engine off. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and they stated that the vehicle has been serviced for every recall.road conditions were not a factor.audi and the dealer stated that the recall repair was performed on the vehicle.the contact didn't agree that the repairs were performed due to the failure she experienced.audi assured the contact that prior to purchasing the vehicle all related recall repairswere performed. The current and failure mileage were both 100,000.
Car was purchased used (1998 - 90k miles-one owner-very well maintained)first week of december 2003. Incident happened approx. First week of january 2004. Audi has been contacted with no reply received to date. Incident occurred while traveling on highway approx. 50 mph, weather conditions were clear and very cold (approx. 25f).as auto was cresting incline, it began to gather speed. Accelerator was backed off but car continued to accelerate at an alarming pace. Brakes were applied several times and as i was preparing to cut ignition car stopped accelerating. This happened is a matter of seconds, but was definitely a panic situation. Car has not repeated this condition.i was referred to your site by audiworld forum members, wherei turned for any helpful information and read of similar occurrences.
Vehicle would continue to accelerate, even after removing foot off the accelerator pedal. Dealer and the manufacturer were notified.

Vehicle speed control: vehicle continued to accelerate after releasing accelerator and while depressing brakes.rpm's rev'd as high as 5000.
While driving at any speed vehicle acceleratedon its own.vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, but dealer was unable to resolve the problem.the dealer suggested the following issues:the floor mat was on the gas pedal, wires were damaged, and a part that was previously replaced per recall failed. *sc
Throttle sticking.
The throttle sticks open at highway speed.vehicle will not stop, the driver has to shut off engine to stop the vehicle.
Consumer stated that when the temperature was below 0 acceleratorstuck. Consumer contactedaudi, they knew about theproblem, but had no solution. Then, consumer took vehicle to repair shop in january2004, they had it repaired, but problemrecurred.
The accelerator pedal became stuck.
The throttle sticks in cold weather causig the audi a6 wehicle to accelerate on its own without pressing the gas.this has happenned to me several times this winter and last winter.i reported this last year with no satisfaction.it is a dangerous situation and audi should be held accountable.i have contacted them several times, but they continue to ignore the problem.i know of at least twenty other vehicles of this make with the same problem.
While drivingvehicle accelerates without warning. Brakes failed to stop vehicle, vehicle was put into park to gain control.please give any further details.
