Read complaints for AUDI A4 (2001)

2001 audi a4air bag light on dash. Dealer checked and stated air bag modulebad. Order one and was installed april 27, 2010. Part # 8d0-959-655-g module. This is a major safety item. Can cause air bags to not deploy.should last longer than it did.

While driving the vehicle on a highway going straight at ~65mph the passenger side curtain and seat airbags deployed for no reason.vehicle manufacturer cited a "crash" signal from side impact sensor was the cause of the false deployment.no physical cause could be found, no damage was found on vehicle and all airbag system wiring was found to be intact and original.manufacturer would not own failure and cited the vehicle being lowered as the cause.manufacturer was unable to provide any evidence for this conclusion and vehicle is well within local laws/regulations for lowered vehicles.

All airbags failed to deploy in a driver's side "t-bone" collision. A-4is equipped with side airbags. A-4 was stationary and occupied, minivan crashed into driver's door and part of front quarter panel. Van's rate of travel was 20 to 30 mph in reverse! my wife suffered neck and shoulder injuries. Local audi dealer replaced the side airbag # 8d0 880 241 aa and the airbag controller module # 8d0 959 655 g. Only at my insistence, was this work performed when i continued to question why no airbags deployed. My direct questions were met with, "you know, more injuries occur when an airbag goes off, so, your wife is probably luckier that they didn't work". Wtf?! hey buddy, let's put you in the driver's seat and ram minivan into it with the same speed and mass! also, rest your arm on the open window and see if you don't lose an arm like my wife almost did. What are these guy's trying to cover up for audi?! has there been a corporate decree of total liability avoidance with deceit being pushed down to the dealer level, or are they just idiots? i'm also in the class action regarding the oil sludge lawsuit. Now they are denying 1/2 of my claim because they say i'm missing proof of a single oil change that should be in the records of the dealership that performed the work, which for some reason all the records pertaining to that critical timeline have been wiped off audi's corporate comupter system. When will it all end? i'm about to drive this [xxx] carover a cliff! any audi execs want to go for a ride? i feel i have been taken for a long enough ride after some $15,000 to $20,000 in repairs over the last 6 years. Let's hope our airbags will be free from failure in the event of a future accident. Someone else's experience has been that switching out the module with the same model module has not eliminated the problem completely and it has re-occurred, i.e., red light in dash coming on again and failure to deploy airbags in crash.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6

Airbag controller fails with no apparent reason.unit generates an unclear fault code (65535) when temperature drops below 32 degrees.this will not allow the airbags to deploy in case of an accident.module has been replaced, and the same failure occurred again less than a year later.

02 v 131 001/fmvss 201 air bag deployment & 04 v 357 000/camshaft position sensor/mil:the consumer received both of these recall notices and was unable to locate a authorized service center within her area.

Abs is broken without any reason.t's only 2 years old but 67000 miles.audi a4 1.8t 2001 model.

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4.the air bag warning light illuminated.the vehicle was taken to the repair shop and they stated that the driver side air bag deployed and needed to be replaced.the cause of the failure was unknown.the vehicle was never involved in a crash.the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 41,800.updated 11/26/07.

Was going about 40 mph and hit into a car that was making a left turn. The whole front end of the car is smashed in and still not one single air bag got deployed. It is an 2001 audi a4 1.8t. There is over 6 airbags in the vehicle and not one got deployed.

Air bag light remains illuminating while driving. Consumer states, " that the dealer had reset the air bag module ten times'. And the problem keeps recurring.

1) there is no triggering event leading up to the failure. It just appears over time. 2) the lcd screen in the instrument cluster has lines of pixels that do not light up. This is constant, with more lines of pixels going out and permanently staying out over time. As a consequence, important warning messages are not displayed or readable; such as worn out brake pads, fuel low warning, washer fluid low warning, etc. If these warnings are not displayed, the vehicle may run out of gas without warning and stall while operating, or brakes may wear down to the point of losing effectiveness without warning, or be left without washer fluid without warning.3) entire instrument cluster was replaced with new by audi dealership under cpo warranty.failed part was kept by audi.

The consumer was exiting the freeway when the ignition coil failed.there was a significant loss of power.scc

My 2001 audi a4 has central lcd display to display all sort of information, but this display fails in most of a4s just after a few years. This is critical for vehicle safety, because this car does not have any other indicators to signal abnormal conditions of the car such as low coolant, check engine, etc. This problem has been known more than five years, but the manufacturer has not been responsible.please look athttp://audiforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46512 for other people's complaints about this problem.

The lcd instrument display is "pixilated" -- unable to clearly display information regarding the status of the vehicle, including safety-related information such as failure of safety-related components (anti-lock brakes etc.).this could lead to a crash or prevent the timely response to a safety-related problem.on-line forums indicate that this is a frequent problem with audi a4s.

- the contact has a 2001 audi a4 and stated that while driving on the highway at 55 mph, he started smelling an odor coming from the driver's seat of the vehicle.he pulled over to the side of the road and notice that there was smoke coming from underneath the seat, seconds after the contact got out of the vehicle the air bag deployed without prior warning.the contact was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the vehicle had a short in the electrical wiring. Contact can provide copy of invoice repair if needed. The current and failure mileage were both 200,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4.he heard a humming sound coming from the vehicle.the dealer stated that the camshaft tensioner needed to be replaced.he also stated that the power circuit failed due to a leak on the roof.the current and failure mileages were 42,140.

The instrument cluster 99% cannot be read due to the lcd display fading. Have done multiple searches and 9 out of 10 people have this same exact issue. Audi needs to step up and take responsibility for this issue. This has been an ongoing issue and needs to be fixed. This has been a huge pain for me because sometimes my car will beep and display something on the lcd screen but because it's fading i have no clue what it's telling me. I don't want to be driving and something life threatening happen because of a missed message because the lcd screen is broken. Fix this before people get hurt and start filing lawsuits.

I own a 2001 audi a4 avant 1.8t that i took delivery in august 2000.late last year, august-october 2003, i noticed that the instrument cluster's center lcd display started to fade on the top part.later on i figured out that it would happen after the car has been under the heat of the sun for a while.i didn't do anything because i figured it's just my car and i've already gone through my warranty period (4 years/50,000miles) as my car already have 70k miles on it.then i started hearing from fellow audi owners that i met that it's happening to their cars too.one has a 2001 audi a4 sedan with 30k miles and the other with a 2001 s4 sedan, both replaced under the warranty.another is a 2002 audi tt, but he's lucked out because he has more than 50k miles too (out of the warranty).what i'm curious is whether there's been any reported similar case?i feel that the damage is not caused by the wear and tear of the long-distance driven car.maybe this is a type of defect?

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4.the contact stated that half of the display pixels on the instrument panel failed to illuminate.the dealer stated that the digital display in the instrument cluster failed.as of november 13, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle.the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 65,000.

2001 audi a4 with gauge cluster problems**nar**ccthe consumer stated the circuit board has been a problem for years with audi's.

Fading lcd on instrument panel.

Center lcd display which carries information relevant to safety is failing. Lot of the information displayed is not readable and hence proper action can't be taken to keep the car safe. Audi refuses to take remedial action to replace the defective instrument clusters.

The digital instrument cluster is not working properly on my 2001 audi a4 1.8t. You can only see half the screen on the center display that notifies you when the car needs to be serviced and if any major problems are occurring i feel this is a safety issue and audi should recall and repair any cars with this malfunction because i have read several reviews of the same problem so obviously it is something they should look into.

(1) i have had 3 audi a4's that have had this same issue!!! 98', 99.5' and 01.5' a4's. Below in the incident date, i stated the date when i purchased mycurrent car... This does not include the two previous a4's i had with the exact same problem years ago.(2) the lcd screen in the instrument cluster has several pixels that die out and make the screen blurry or blank!this is extremely important for the driver to know what is wrong with the car when a problem occurs!also states in the owners manual it is for safety issues and the driver needs to be aware of these situations at all times.like i previously said, this is my third audi a4 and have had this problem with all three.it is very frustrating, especially when you have no idea what is wrong with your car because of this ongoing defect with audi.(3) have visited audi dealerships numerous times to get this resolved.everytime i get a price quote of over $900 which is completely insane!everytime i go to the dealership concerning this issue, it is with a different car and have expected this to be a recall by now!this is a huge inconvenience and hope for all audi owners that this gets resolved very quickly!

Lcd panel in instrument panel is blanking out/causing information to be garbled on the screen.

There have been no accidents so far however my warning display on my instrument cluster on my 2001 audi a4 1.8t has be continually fading in warm weather leaving me unable to see if there are any problems with my car. This can become very serious if i can't see if something major comes up that needs immediate attention.

Failure of ignition coil. Car sputters. Audi only replacing the coil that malfunctioned leaving the rest of the cylinders subject to the same dangerous failure, as all coils obviously were the same when installed at factory and therefore all are potentially faulty.*nlm

2001 audi a4. In for 3rd coil pack replacement in less than a year. This appears to be a widespread problem involving a known defective part. Audi refuses to replace all of the coil packs at once, instead prefering to have the customer come in for each inevitable failure. The car is essentialy inoperable in this condition and requires towing for each instance of failure which does not occure locally. Audi needs to recall this car! i would like you to consider the plight of handicapped individuals for whom this is more than a major inconvenience, but a dangerous situation. Audi knows about the problem and could address it directly instead of putting people through this.thank you

There is a quite apparent issue with the coilpack failures on these cars, particulary with those that operate in cold weather (<30f).audi has not officially recognized the problem through a recall.

In cold conditions (10f) and with little vehicle warm-up time, the vehicle began cutting out and lost engine power while driving.the vehicle would not recover so i shut off the engine and restarted.engine operation returned to normal but had registered fault codes which were traced to the coils not firing properly.

2001 audi a4 avant quatro, about 17k miles.failure of ignition coil at cold stratup. Found numerous reported cases of same problem, related to 1.8t engine audi or vw - so common that part is on backlog for 2 weeks or more! dealer refuses to change all ignition coils, so it is very likely that another one may fail soon.sudden failure of ignition coil may create a very dangerous situation - lost of power in traffick at high speed. Audi/vw should be forced to do a recall of all ignition coils for the 2001 and 2002 models equipped with 1.8t engines.

An ignition coil on my 2001 audi a4 failed, causing an extreme loss of power, poor steering and braking.the potential for an accident exists, especially if driving at a higher speed, or in poor weather conditions (as i was). The dealer was authorized to only repair the 1 failed coil, and i am at risk for further failures, a safety concern for me.

For the second time on my audi a4 turbo the ignition coil failed, causing car to completely loose power on busy road. My vehicle only has 12,500 miles on it and the dealership will not change all coils. They also refuse to do a trade in on the vehicle

My coil pack has failed 5 times, 1st at 12,000 miles 2nd at 2x,xxx 3rd at 2x,xxx 4th at 38,xxx abd 5th at 40,000.dt

Third failure of ignition coil (while car being driven) within 2 months. This problem looks like it is similar to odi id 770040.dt

This has happened to countless 1.8t volkswagen and audi vehicles.audi has yet to make any official comment on the problem.some people get 1 coil replaced while others get all coils replaced.they are being very inconsistent.my dealer didn't even tell me about the history behind the problem.i had to look it up myself.dt

The problem fortunately happened while the car was idling. There was a fault to one of the cylinders, so the car was running on only three cylinders. Although there were no injuries, the dealer stated that if this would have happened while driving. The car would have shut off without brakes or any other electrically operated systems.at highway speeds this would have been catastrophic.the dealer also stated that this problem has occured on many of the 1.8 liter turbo a4's.dt

I was in the middle of an intersection when my car began to idle irregularly.i managed to get to the side of the road.i was towed to an audi dealership.three days later my car was repaired.all that i was told was that my #2 coil pack failed.i was not given any information that the other 3 would most likelt fail also.upon doing research on message boards i realized that this was an enormous problem.i called audi client relations and told them that i felt like i was driving a ticking time bomb as i could never be sure when the other coil packs were going to fail.the woman that i spoke with told me to take the car back to the audi dealership and "demand that the other 3 be replaced."when i took my car back to another dealership because of the terrible service i received at the 1st dealer, they laughed in my face.they told me that they were at a "crisis state" with the coil packs, that they did not have any to switch out for me, and that i would just have to wait for my car to die while in operation.and when that happened, that they could only replace the coil pack that failed!if this isn't gross negligence i do not know what is!additionally, i have hada cam tensioner replaced, the electronic sensor replaced, and now it appears that my steering rack is going bad.i have 38k miles with only 12k left on my warranty.i cannot believe the terrible reliability of this car on top of audi's reluctance to issue a recall campaign on the coil packs.unfortunately,it is probably going to take a person dying before anyone addresses this very serious issue.

Audi a4 ignition coil problem.2 have gone - now i have to wait for the other 2 to go in order to again own a dependable car.this is most inconvenient during a cold winter!i am paying my lease, and am not able to drive the car further than a few miles.i live in a remote area of maine, where the temperature is well below zero much of the time.i could freeze to death waiting for a tow truck!!why is there not a recall.why can't the company put a hold on completing new cars and therefore install 4 coils at a time instead of one as they go??why should i continue to pay for this car unless it is fixed?

Ignition coil malfunction

Car fire that totally destroyed the vehicle, with only 4000 miles on it. It was a 2001 audi a4 1.8t.

2001 audi a4 customer states that audi is responsible for his loss because the fire was due to a malfunction of the electrical wiring**cc updated 04/05/07.

While vehicle was parked over night a fire ignited insteering column under the dash area, and spread to the engine compartment due to an electrical short circuit .please give any further details.

Vehicle was sitting for two hours with engine off.consumer noticed smoke coming from out of the dash, and flames came through the passenger seat.vehicle's battery was unhooked and fire went out. Radio and window were functioning on their own.

'01 a4 2.8: (1) digital display is blurry and cannot fully understand everything the computer is displaying, (2) internal oil seals have become defective causing a foul burnt-oil smell within and outside the vehicle, (3) transmission downshifts very hard and rough, (4) very poor design by the engineers to place a cupholder directly over the stereo and heater instrumentation which have caused my buttons to stick. Have taken the vehicle to various dealerships and shops and technicians have stated that the seals are obviously a design flaw and so is the display panel with has some software or lcd problems associated with it.

2001 audi a4 quattro 2.8l. As driving smoke was coming from hood.. Park and realize the engine was on fire. It look like it started by the passenger side headlight and spread. I read that audi had a recall on head light switch but did not rec, a recall letter. Not exactly sure where the fire started my audi caught on fire. I dont't have pictures to upload but i will soon. I am very hurt to know that the car i enjoyed driving caught on fire/disappointed with audi

The check engine light (mil) has had several recurrences. The mass air flow meter and sensor have been replaced twice. ( 65,060 and 107,894). The initial failure was at 36,512 miles. 47,819 miles, 65,060 miles, 107,894 miles,118,628 miles and in july, 2014 at 159,421 miles, there was a warranty extension letter in november, 2003 that included 2001 audi a-4 1.8t vehicles and a voluntary emissions service action 28f2/j1 ignition coil inspection/replacement in october, 2009.secondary issue. Unable to read dashboard display. Pixeled. Unable to read safety/vehicle notifications.

The "check engine" light on my 2001 audi a4 quattro came on and was running somewhat roughly.i called the dealerships service department and they told me to bring it in.on the 8-mile freeway drive the engine caught fire and destroyed the engine.

I leased an a4 2001 audi in december 2000.my lease runs out in march 2004 and i'm looking at what my rights are as a consumer.over the last 6 months, i've had my car towed and repaired twice for ignition coil failure as well as my tires replaced from out of whack alignment.today, the engine light appeared again and i will drop it off at the audi service department, this monday for maintenance review. Fortunately, the only costs i've incurred are replacement of the 2 front tires.it currently has 33,000 miles on it.

While driving the vehicleat 65mph suddenly the speed dropped to 35mphdueto a faulty ignition coil pack. Dealer changed the faulty coil. (under guarantee)dealer and manufacturerhas been notified. Please provide further information. Ts

1. Both times, car was being driven normally at around 30-40 mph when, without any warning at all, the car completely stopped from it's speed to zero mph immediately, engine dies and all power was gone from the car.all attempts to restart the car were unsuccessful.it is not a battery issue. This car is very well maintained to all manufacturer's recommendations with oem parts used for all services which are all done by certified technicians at the dealer or reputable independent shop.2.occurred first on sunday 4/27/08 and again on 5/1/08.we are very lucky thatit happened when we were on quiet subarban streets and not the highway otherwise with the car coming to a sudden and complete stop there could have been a very messy accident.imagine going from 65mph to 0mph without any warning on a rush hour freeway.please investigate this very thoroughly.3.after first incident, car was taken to reputable audi auto repair shop that replaced an electric wire, electrical connector and ignition switch.mechanics' claim to have found power supply cable to the ecu with excessive resistance, traced the wire and found a bad connection in the harness connector. By-passed connector and now the computer is communicating ok (copied from mechanics' operations and parts report).this took the mechanics' 3 days as they said it was a very freaky, unusual and hard to find and solve electrical problem.clearly this did not work since the car again suddenly stopped 5 hours after the alleged fix.now have towed the car to audi dealership.4.after first incident, called audi client relations u.s.a. Toinform them of what we thought was a major safety risk to help make sure it did not happen to others in the future since it could lead to a very messy/fatal accident(s) but they were not at all interested since it is outside warranty.

02 v 131 001/fmvss 201 air bag deployment & 04 v 357 000/camshaft position sensor/mil:the consumer received both of these recall notices and was unable to locate a authorized service center within her area.

Consumer states that vehicle's coil pack failed out causing vehicle to stall, and total loss of power please provide additional information. Ts

While driving 60-65 mph, the vehicle lost power with the dashboard flashing. The consumer began smelling burnt wires andnoticed smoke coming from under the hood. The consumer pulled over and opened the hood. Upon doing so, flames shot out.

1) normal driving2) cam shaft gasket failure.causing oil leak.3) taken to repair shop.audi maintenance warranty does not check for this.issue occurred after warranty expired after 50000 miles.

2001 audi a4 1.8 turbo:the timing belt broke while the car was traveling in heavy, rush hour traffic causing the car to be immediately disabled and stopped with no opportunity to move the car off of the highway.the 3-lane highway was backed up for 6 miles while police and emergency workers worked to tow the car.the disabled car led to a very dangerous situation with traffic backed up for over 1-hour on a 3-lane highway with a 55 mph speed limit and could have easily caused additional accidents.the timing belt failure caused extensive, additional damage to the engine that is estimated to cost about $5,000-$6,000 to repair.my audi a4 has the same 1.8 t engine and item (timing belt) as in the 2001 vw 1.8 t and that item has been recalled. The timing belt defect in the 2001 a4 appears to be quite well known to the two audi dealers that i frequent.since i bring my audi in for service at the regular intervals - and since the timing belt issue is well known to audi - i would have expected the audi dealers to bring this issue to my attention so that we could have replaced the belt as part of regular preventive maintenance.the fact that this well known problem was not handled in preventive maintenance led to a very dangerous traffic incident and caused extensive damage to the vehicle's engine.

I have had to replaced all four coils two (2) times on my audi a.4 1.8t and audi usa says this is normal.

2001 audi a4 with timing belt failure and repair. Consumer states that the timing belt repair did not last and his vehicle completely failed on the highway. Consumer was then informed of an oil sludge issue.updated 10/19/11.

A4's have a poorly designed cam tensioner that eventually leaks oil.the cost to repair the item is approximately $1000.the dealer (carousel audi) even admits to the fact that it is a poor design and there have been numerous complaints about it at the dealer.i've also read numerous complaints about it on audi forums.the leak typically found shortly after the warranty period has expired.i feel strongly that this should be a recall on all respective cars to have it repaired!

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4.while driving approximately 35 mph uphill, the vehicle stalled.there were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and it was discovered that the timing belt needed replacing and the engine was destroyed.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 84,429.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 50 mph on the interstate, there was a popping noise from the engine compartment followed by a lost of all power.the contact managed to pull over without incident.the engine would not restart and the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection.the dealer determined there was a hole in the engine and was unable to identify what caused the hole, however a new engine replacement was necessary.updated 5/10/2006 -

Oil light came on.immediately pulled over and checked engine oil level.not low.took the car to the dealership.originally diagnosed as needing a new oil pump due to oil sludge.on further inspection the dealer found scarring on the engine bearings and wear on the camshaft.upon flushing all the pre-existing oil out of the engine, metal filings were found.new diagnosis: completely new engine required.audi, usa knows this is a prombem with a4 1.8t.they've extended warranties as a direct result.yet becuase i'm the second owner and can't produce all previous oil change receipts, i'm being required to pay for the new engine.this is a poor engine design that i shouldn't be held liable for.

2001 audi a4 1.8 turbo at 99.1k miles.the timing belt prematurely napped while the car was traveling in a busy morning commute causing car to disabled on the freeway.the timing belt failure caused extensive, additional damage to the engine that estimated to coast about $6000 to repair.i have all my maintenances done at the audi dealers and follow all the recommend service by audi.i was never been recommended to replace the timing belt on my all previous visits for maintenance service.the recommended timing belts replacement by audi for my model is 105k miles.both audi dealer and audi denied been in responsible for the timing belt defect and/or incorrect timing belt maintenance recommendation which subsequently result the engine damage and provide any assistant.according to audi, they do not guarantee the timing belt will last to 105k miles, only that it is their recommendation.

Audi a4 1.8t oil pump failure causes cam adjuster failure, causing possible $8000 in damage to cams in 1.8t motor.

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4.he heard a humming sound coming from the vehicle.the dealer stated that the camshaft tensioner needed to be replaced.he also stated that the power circuit failed due to a leak on the roof.the current and failure mileages were 42,140.

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4.while driving 55 mph, the vehicle lost power and shut off.the vehicle was unable to be restarted and was towed to the dealer.the dealer stated that the timing belt snapped.as of july 30, 2007, the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 99,000.

While driving down the highway, consumer states vehicle began to shake and engine light illuminated.the vehicle was towed to dealer.dealer says emission coil failed. Please provide any further inforationl mr

I have an audi a4 1.8 t and the hydraulic timing belt tensioner lost its pressure witch made the timing belt slip, forcing the pistons into the valves and bending them, causing the engine to basically self destruct after only 89000 miles when the owner's manual only recommended changing the timing belt after 120000 miles. I called audi, and they told me they wouldfix it for $5,000and don't feel i should be the one paying for this when there was nothing i could have done to prevent this problem.

Vehicle has total loss of power on many instances is unsafe to drive , dealer /manufacturer have been unable to remedy.

Vehicle will intermittently shut off while consumer is driving. Please provide more information.

Timing belt tensioner failed at 59,016 miles.recommended replacement of both tensioner and belt on a 2001 a4 1.8t quattro per owner's manualis 105,000 miles.all recommended services had been done on schedule by same dealer.this car is only used as commuter transportation and is primarily driven on freeways.

Improper motor oil specification causes sludge buildup in engine, leading to engine failure.

Malfuntion indicator had been on before i deployed to iraq and was still on when i came back.i brought it to the dealor for the $50,000 mile scheduled maint.less than 2 months later, i started the car at a store and heard a loud pop, the engine started idling hard and was very noisy.i was able to drive in first gear the two blocks to my house but the car was very shaky.the spark plug had shot out, there was oil and grime all over it and the threads of the cylinder were stripped.my friend in the car, who has worked on porshes before, said i was lucky this happened when it did because if i was driving on the highway at a high speed, i probably would have been seriously hurt in an accident.the cost of repair is estimated at $5100 and the dealor said that there was no tampering with the spark plugs for almost a year so this "just happened" due to "wear and tear."the car is 3 years old and most the miles are highway miles due to several trips cross country.i am nervous to think what will go wrong when the car gets a little older.

Purchased an 2001 audio (used) at d & s auto and within a week there was screeching noise coming from the engine, engine light came on. Brought it back to d & s auto. D & s auto had it looked at and they said the list of problems were none found, only that they fixed the engine light. Couple days later the engine light came back on and also the rear back tire was making a strange noise. D & s auto made an appointment for the 2001 auto to go to another dealer to be looked at. Also, purchased the best full warranty on the vehicle. The dealer printed out a list of problems which are listed above he said that are problems and the cost was going to be around $3,000.00 and that the warranty does not cover any of the repairs.

Owner was driving vehicle when smoke started to come from the dashboard. Examination revealed that a rubber body plug in the right front towboard ignited due to an overheated exhaust system, causing a fire that burned on the right front floor and upward into the dash. Spark plugs showed an engine management system problem existed that caused the overheated exhaust.

I am presently leasing the audi a4 1.8t.the car has died on three occassions and audi tells me that this was due to the coil spring problems they have been having.on the first two occassions there was no "warning indicator" or "check engine light."they seem to indicate that there is some sort of warning before this problems happens, but in my case there was not.the first two times this happened to me the car just died while driving at highway speeds and would not restart.there was absolutely no warning or light to tell me something was wrong with my car.the third time it happened i did have the light flash and the car ride rough.this car is absolutly deadly.i was fortunate enough the first two times to be able to pull off the road.do not let audi and vw fool you into thinking that there is always a warning before this happens.the car is deadly and sometimes there is no warning when it is going to die.for incident date i put the first incident only.

Screen on the radio flashes intermittently, causing you to look away from the road expecially at night.it could be some sort of short which i belive could lead to fire.

In 2007 xenon headlights dropped/dippedheadlight level sensor replaced and lights appeared to work correctly.in 2011 the same problem occurred again.headlight leveling sensor and wiring harness replaced. Appears to be working ok.driving with the headlights aimed incorrectly is a dangerous driving condition.it appears that there is a common design flaw with the xenon headlights.

We have experienced an intermittentproblem with the hid head lights flickering and shutting off during operation at night. The left low beam began to flicker and then shut off. The head light warning indicator light comes on. After inspection the next day, lights came back on and were working normally no warning lights were on. This appears to be a common problem with this type of car and in my opinion a very dangerous one that needs to be addressed by audi in a recall for the obvious ballast, bulb, wiring, problem that exists on this car.

The new blue-white light headlights on the audi and other luxury and imported cars is blinding when approaching from the other direction, significantly reducing the ability to see and posing a safety hazard. The effect seems even worse than a car approaching with its high beams on. The effect is so bad that it prevents you from seeing the road and other things around. They should be banned.

Excessive gas fumes from car.dealer and other service center looked for problem several times.after car was unfit to drive - smelled so bad from gasoline fumes - a service garage removed the fuel tank.the fuel was seeping through molded in plastic connection fittings on top of the tank at their molded interface to the tank - the tank is a poly type tank.the tank was replaced.this is clearly a design defect. Had the fumes been near an ignition source a possible fire or worse could have resulted. It is my opinion that the dissimilar materials used for the tank and fittings lost their seal over time.audi of america has shown no interest in dealing with this.since there were 4 fuel tanks available on a friday and on the following monday, there were none, so i had to wait up to 2 additional weeks to get a tank - i suspect they are keenly aware of this defect.this car has been garage kept, i am original owner, and it has no accidents.i have the original failed fuel tank at this time.date of repair 6/29/09 to 7/21/09.

The vehicle has been to the dealer four times to fix the gas gauge.gauge will read 1/2 full, and the tank is empty, which will cause the vehicle to cut off.

The bolts holding the hood latch to the hood came undone causing the hood to break away from the latch, the hood then bent backwards smashing the windshield and roof of the vehicle, the hood latch remained in lock position at all times, hood detached itself from latch, drivers could not see out of front windshield, windshield, roof, fenders were damaged as well.

While drivingtransmission downshifted and jerked forward. Dealer is inspectingvehicle.

While driving in traffic vehicle would jerk and lose power, causing thevehicle to stall. Driver contacted the dealership.

Was making a left hand turn going 5 mph or less when the left front axel on my 2001 a4 broke off.it has been determined by the dealer to be a manufacturer defect, but audi usa will not do anything to assist in the repair of the defective product as i am not the original owner of the vehicle.if i were, they would assist/cover the repair costs.

1.we were stuck in traffic on an incline for a period of approximately 5 to 10 minutes slowly approaching the caldecott tunnel (cal. Highway 24-east bound) which was backed up.i was required to push our manual clutch in an out repeatedly during the backup, but was very careful not to "ride" the clutch.2.twice in a period of 12 months, the special "dual clutch" flywheel and clutch assembly began to catch fire.in the first instance, the car became inoperative and had to be towed.in the second instance i was able to get off the freewayto prevent further damage and danger, but the car was again inoperative.it is undoubtedly the defective flywheel design which is catching fire since the clutch in the first instance had just been replaced.3.in both instances within the 12-month period, the entire flywheel and clutch system had to be replaced even though the clutch was still operative.the expense was approximately $3000 for each repair since audi claimed this was "driver error."(the repair parts are available.) this is a preposterous claim since i have been driving manual transmission vehicles successfully for 40+ years without having similar problems as experienced with the fire-prone audi flywheel.similar complaints and experiences are reported on the internet all over the country on various forums.all such reports detail a similar denial of responsibility by audi.

While using my heater on my seats and a pillow for additional back support, i noticed smoke and burning smell when pulling into my driveway.when getting out of my car i noticed that my pillow was leaking...and upon pulling the pillow off the drivers seat, it was damaged/burned through.i also noticed that a burned hole the size of a quarter is now quite visible.worried that this may cause a car fire.

Factory heated seat set on lowest setting and burning hole through leather and clothing! left hole size of dime in front driverside seat.

Brakes were working fine, coming off freeway, was coasting thru light, traffic stopped, brakes no longer worked, brake pedal was suddenly flush with floor.rearended a car, car started jumping forward.had to use the emergency brake to stop the car.car was towed after accident, not because it was not drivable, it was not drivable due to brake problem.repair shop said brakes failed to vacuum hose breaking, no warning prior to losing brakes.

Abs is broken without any reason.t's only 2 years old but 67000 miles.audi a4 1.8t 2001 model.

Failure of abs controller in 2001 audi a4 1.8t.was told by dealer that engine heat melts soldering in unit.$1,300 estimated repair ($1,000 for part alone).intermittent failure light and beep when driving, abs not active when light is blinking.i've read on audi websites that this is a common failure that audi of america refuses to take steps to rectify either monetarily or through redesign of the controller to prevent future failures.

Abs electrical module that has failed and is apparently a huge problem, it affects the braking system.

Failure of abs brake control unit in an audi 2001 a4 while driving on the freeway with snow. It occurred in salt lake city, utah.abs brake light came on and the abs brakes weren't working driving on snow and needed to be replaced. $710.00 was the cost of the repair for a faulty unit and a very common problem that audi knows about it. Good thing that i was going really slow and i was exiting the slippery freeway at the time and i didn't slide.thank you!

While driving in suburban traffic, i noticed the brake pedal fully dress when i attempted to slow from about 30 mph. Upon subsequent stops, there was a metal on metal sound. Upon inspection, the right front outer pad had completely detached from backing plate. The car was inspected by audi only 3k miles earlier and there was no indication of brake pad wear. Neither the dealer nor audi would acknowledge or accept responsibility.

The brake squeals 90% of the time being applied, it happened since a few months ago. Brought to a local dealer a few times for the problem and reported with "cannot replicate the problem" and "noise is normal for some brakes", while the problem is actually getting worse and now the brake is making the squealing noise even after releasing the brake and last for one or two seconds - it happened especially after the foot brake was applied for more than 15 seconds and then been released (e.g. After waiting at a red light).

2001 audi a4 2.8abs brake system controller failure.

Abs control module failed.modules are defective and audi should recall them.online research shows thousands of audi/vw car owners have experienced this same problem.cost to replace module is $1500-2000 dollars. Vw has issued recall of this abs module, but audi has not (even though same exact part).nhtsa needs to put pressure on audi to recall this component, they are defective, unsafe, and could lead to accidents.

1. One day suddenly my audi 2001 a4 starts to show abs and brake light to be failing.2. The failure when diagnosed seems to be a problem with audi's abs control unit, and that needs to be repaired.3. I have not repaired it yet, because dealers quoted a huge price of more than 1500$ to fix the abs control unit.

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4.the contact stated that the abs warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel and the brake warning light was flashing. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostics where the mechanic advised the contact that the ecu module would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 112,000.

2001 audi a4 with about 105k miles on. Abs sensor is faulty and this problem is very widespread amongst audi a4s built around this time. It is a $1500 - $2000 repair for a part that really doesn't seem to go bad with this frequency in other cars. For an example of the score, see this site. This is just one of many sites with similar complaints around this issue:http://audi-vw-abs-recall.blogspot.com/2005/07/audi-and-vw-please-recall-cars-between.html.

Abs module failure.

In searching for complaints filed for 2001 audi a4's i noticed a number related to very poor braking in wet weather.i experienced the same problem with my 2001 a4.audi does have a solution for this problem.the rotor backing plates must be replaced with a different design.when i brought it into the dealer for routine service and mentioned the problem no one in the dealership was familiar with the problem. A factory rep. Was visiting the dealership at the time and was familiar with the problem.he ordered new backing plates which, i am told, can only be ordered by a factory rep.it took 3 months for the parts to reach the dealership.i haven't had the problem since the new backing plates were installed.

Intermittent and ongoing problem when applying brakes. Pedal would go to the floor.had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. Dealer notified.

After sitting for a couple of hours the brakes do not kick in right away if you immediately start the car and back up. You need to push the brake pedal hard and to the floor before the car will stop. Like there is an air bubble in the hydraulics. Many who have driven the car have nearly backed into other cars in parking lots. Fortunately there havent been pedestrians behind the car when this happened.2 days after i bought the car i contacted prestige about the problem they said there was nosolthe car still has this problem every day. You cant tell if the car is going to stop or whether it is going to roll into something. Once the car runs for a bit the problem is gone. On 3/15/01 i brought the car in & explained the brake problem. The svc agent said this was not normal & they would fix it. The problem was not fixed. On 8/2/01 i brought the car to prestige again. This time i insisted they fix the problem as there had been too many close calls. On 8/3/01 prestige said again it was a known problem & there was no fix. I insisted they keep the car longer to recreate the problem..on 8/2/01 i called audi client relations & reported the problem. Audi said they would fix the problem. She assigned case #10530656.on 8/7/01 the svc manager from prestige called & said they had recreated the problem & needed to get audi involved to get the problem fixed. On friday, 8/10/01, prestige said they were still working with audi to get the problem fixed. On tuesday 8/14/01, prestige left me the following voice mail "i just had a short discussion with my supervisor (dennis). He is in contact with audi & we are trying to figure out what we might be able to dowhat were trying to do is see if audi will make any adaptations to that or if there are any other options availablehopefully we should have it resolved it by friday." on 8/17/01 prestige called & said there is no fix. I need to let the car warm up for 20 seconds before i drive it in order for the brakes to work properly.

While traveling at approxmimately 20 mph attempted to stopvehicle andbrakes failed to slowvehicle down.consumer'svehicle struck another vehicle, causing no injuries. Dealership has not examinedvehicle.

The contact owns a 2001 audi a4. He stated that the antilock breaks sensor illuminates constantly.he had the garage replaced the break sensor twice. The first replacement was done on january 10, 2010 and the second break sensor replacement was february 16, 2010 and the failure was not corrected. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 102,034. He has not contacted the dealer or manufacturer.

In wet conditions, the braking ability of this car is reduced.when first applying the brakes, there is a delay before full braking power is available.the theory is that water is being splashed onto the rotors and must be cleared before the pads can achieve full contact.

Brakes failed while going downhill on a wet but clean road.58 degrees outside.pedal felt firm and normal but brakes didn't slow car.2 seconds of direct pressure yielded nothing.i then lifted my foot and repplied the brake with incredible force. 1 second passed with no response and suddenly the brakes grabbed and stopped the car. Scary.

Braking system does not initially apply any meaningful stopping power when driving in wet conditions. This results in a 1-2 second delay in actual slowing when applying brakes in the wet. This situation has occurred with both stock and aftermarket wheels and brake pads and light as well as heavy wet conditions, and at all speeds.

Audi has faulty automatic braking system controller units. Their 1998 - 2002 units have a very high incidence of failure in the electronics component. They have done a recall for the exact same part for the vw jetta, but not for the audi's. They require $1,700 to repair it, so many people leave it as is, which is unsafe.

I'd like to file a complant for a faulty vehicle component on my 2001 audi a4 (mileage: 30,000 miles).the abs and brake warning lights are coming on simultaneously.i've been reading a lot of similar complaints on the internet (that's how i found this site).dealer says there's a "fault code in the abs control module"...and wants $1500 (!) to repair it.the abs unit should not be failing as frequently as it seems to be in this car.for a $1500 component to malfunction when it's rarely actuated is beyond comprehension.the tsb should force audi to perform a recall and/or compensate customers for this outrageous problem.

Especially during highway driving the braking system does not initially apply any meaningful stopping power when driving in wet conditions. This results in a 1-2 second delay in actual slowing when applying brakes in the wet.

Intermitent complete brake failure.has happened 3 times the week of 6/27/03. Dealer can not replicate problem and is making me take car out of service area.the dealer admits they would not drive the car with this problem and i don't know what to do next. *nlm

Rear brakes make whining/grinding sound only when in reverse.dealer has tried deglazing and power washing brake discs and routers to no avail.

Front brake failure.out of four pad/shoes, 3 pads physically separated off of their respectivie shoes.one of the three actually came out during driving. When this occured, i temporarily lost braking ability as the brake pedal went to the floor without providing any decelaration.car needed to be towed to the dealership as it became usafe to drive.the remaining pad/shoe that was not separated was in reaonable condition measuring 7.7mm (out of 10mm).the two remaining separated pads are chipped showing major delamination and major degredation.remaining pads & shoes have been saved.brake pads/shoes & rotors were replaced by ira audi97 andover streetdanvers, ma978-739-8806this appears to be a catastrophic product failure once the pad lets loose completely.events leading up to failure:about a week before, i was hearing a thunk sound when the car would change from reverse to forward motion.this occured only after the vehicle was sitting overnight.

Front brake pads separated from their backing plates.

I was chasing a brake squeal. When i removed the front pads on our audi a4, (2001), three of the four pads were not attached to their backing plates. These were the original ate pads; the car has traveled about 38000 miles.

While braking at any speed consumerheard a squeaking noise.mechanic determined that the front/rear brake pads fell off.

12/2004, purchased certified 2001 audi a4 from beechmont audi in cincinnati, ohio.car had a comprehensive 300+ point inspection performed by audi as per paperwork.5/20/2001, vehicle taken to bluegrass audi in louisville, kentucky for a brake assist problem.several days prior to brining the vehicle in, i was in reverse leaving my garage when i found that i needed to push the brake pedal to the floor to slow and stop the vehicle.i noticed when i drove forward the problem went away.i tried backing up again and found the braking to be normal.later that afternoon i was going to lunch and when i backed up the vehicle didn't have any brake assist again and i had to push on the brake pedal with maximum force.took the vehicle to my local audi dealership and was told by the service manager that the car needed a brake flush.they performed the brake flush, but that didn't fix the problem.i returned the vehicle back to audi several days later and was informed that they found the problem with a grommet that connects two vacuum hoses at the bulkhead.they added a clamp to stop the air from escaping the system, but the next day it proved not to work.they also informed me that the brake pads and rotors were within audi limits.took the vehicle back and was informed that they needed to replace the grommet.after the item was replaced, it still has the same problem as of 7/4/2005.in summary, the vehicle has a brake assist problem in reverse after the vehicle has been sitting for a short period of time.in my un-scientific research, the brake assist fails if the vehicle has been sitting and not running for less than 2-3 hours.when this occurs, the brakes operate, but maximum brake pressure is required to stop the vehicle until the pressure builds up.this could be an isolated incident, but i thought i would pass this information along just in case there are others with the same problem.

No summary listed for abov evehicle.

During 90,000 mile service, the mechanic discovered that both side spindles (steering knuckles) were cracked.according to the mechanic, the car was in a position to loose steering capability with those items cracked.they said it's rare to see both sides cracked.tie rod ends were also replaced due to wear.i still have both spindles if needed.mechanic replaced both spindles and tie rod ends.the vehicle is certified and still under warranty from audi until the end of december.the vehicle had an 80,000 mile service done in april 2006.

The tie rods on my car wore out after only 45k miles.i discovered this when i took the car in for required safety inspection. The repair shop said that this is very common on audi vehicles, and they replace 4-5 sets per week. I feel that this is obviously a design flaw with audi and that a recall should bereissued.there was a recall on 98 and 99 audi tie rods, but it is obvious that there is still a problem.the repair was $250. I feel that this is quite dangerous as i wasnt expecting a malfuntion so soon, especially one that involves such a vital component of vehicular safety.

While driving at 10 mph or less vehicle made a cracking/popping noise. Vehicle was taken to a repair shop. Mechanic informed the consumer that the lower control arm needed to be replaced. Dealer was not notified.

Consumer complaint regarding tire speed rating appropiate for 2001 audi a4 avant.audi of america refuses to provide the consumer with written confirmation of the tire speed rating appropriate for the consumer's vehicle.

The seat rail loosening has occurred on both driver and front passenger seats. The driver side seat rails were replaced at 42,759 miles. After less than 7,000 miles of additional driving, the driver side rails are beginning to loosen again. The passenger side rails are gradually loosening, but more slowly, as there isn't always a passenger in that seat. The windshield washer pump developed a crack immediately after the 40,000 mile service, which was at 42,759 miles.
