In a snow storm, driver braked at an intersection, automatic brakes kicked in but did not stop the 10 mile per hour slide through the intersection.car stopped parallel to the curb and was immediately t-boned by an suv.air bags did not deploy.driver was wearing aseat belt and suffered a brokev arm . . .lucky.based upon the condytion of the car, driver should be dead.

I was stopped at a red light when a car crashed into the back of my 1997 audi a4. This caused my car to crash into the car in front of me and that car to crash in to the car in front of it. My driver-side air bag did not deploy and my seat belt did not lock up. The air bag on the passenger side did deploy. Because the air bag and seat belt did not work, i hit the windshield and had to go to the hospital for medical attention.

I was sitting at a stop light and was struck from behind at speeds between 40 to 60 miles a hour. My airbags did not deploy and my driver seat came lose from the floor and because of this i received injuries to my neck and face.

I received safety recall js for the audi a4 ignition switch in november 2006 and complied with the instructions by bringing the car to the dealer for a replacement switch in january 2007. The dealer did not do the repair because they said my car already had the correct switch. In june 2008, this ignition switch malfunctioned in the exact manner described in the recall. When i started the engine, i heard a crack in the ignition switch and then the electrical components, including dashboard lights, horn, turn signal, windshield wipers, and air conditioning, immediately became inoperative. When i turned off the engine, the key would not return to the off position and had to be pulled out by force and subsequently forced back in to put the car in neutral for the tow truck. I contacted both the dealer and audi customer relations about the problem, but since the recall had been closed by this time, no one was willing to consider the possibility that the repair had not been done properly or that the ignition switch in my car, which they had previously claimed was the correct one, was just as defective as the recalled switch. I brought the car to an independent repair shop and had the switch replaced at my own expense. I asked for reimbursement from audi, but they refused.

The vehicles battery exploded without warning.nlm

I complied with audi safety recall js for my 1997 audi a-4q when notified by audi to do so by a recall notice.the part that was supplied by audi(an ignition switch) for the recall subsequently failedin the same manner and with the same effects as those that led to the recall.i replaced the malfunctioning switch at my expense and sought a refund for my out of pocket expenses from audi customer service, they refused my request and said they had satisfied their obligation to me by removing my ignition switch (that was working fine) and replacing it with a malfunctioning switch as part of audi safety recall js.

Upon starting the car, it made a noise as though the key was still in starting position.the car drove okay, but the wipers, headlights, digital odometer, everything electric would not work.i went to work, planning to bring the car to the dealer later that day.when i returned to my car at lunch time, the key would not even go into the ignition.after calling aaa, and having 3 different tow trucks, no one was able to tow the car bause it has all wheel drive and i could not get the car on to put it in nuetral.i then called every locksmith in the phonebook until one finally stopped by.he was able to lubricate the key and get it in the ignition.upon doing so he told me that the housing was probably fracture and out of place.i drove it straight to the dealer, where i was not informed of the ignition recall, and charged $542 to replace the electrical switch and housing of the ignition.i later discovered on my own that it was a recall on my car.i contacted the dealer who told me to contact audi headquarters.i spoke to two different representative who were both very rude.i then sent audi a copy of my bill and requested that they reimburse my costs for the defected parts. They refused to reimburse me.i have contacted the massachusetts general dept of consumer affairs.they informed me that by law, audi should reimburse me and if not that i should pursue legal action.i have re-sent my bill to audi, and if within 30 days, i have not been reimbursed, they will be seeing me in court.

Consumer called complaining about havingignition switch problems. There was a recall on 2000, which he had it done .a few months later it burned the startertwice. Manufacturee was contacted, and stated thatmanufacturer was not responsible for it.

Both the cruise control and the headlight washer vaccum pumps shorted out at the same time after 40000 miles.nothing was done by the owners other then normal driving the might be associated with the number of ingintion switches problems noted on audi 4's.

Intermittent problem with engine computer kept it from accelerating.it would suddenly only idle out from a stop.if you were to pull into traffic you could not accelerate and would be hit or cause someone else to swerve to avoid you.it took the dealer 7 months to find the problem and replace the ecu.it became obvious after replacement that it had been bad since day one and gradually got worse since all acceleration hesitation went away.this unit quickly failed and had to be replaced also.

The contact owns a 1997 audi a4.when turning the key to the right to start the vehicle, the key remains in the start position instead of turning back.the manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa recall # 06v403000 (electrical system:ignition:switch).the current mileage is 111,000 and failure mileage was 100,000.

Dt*: the contact stated while attempting to turn on the ignition, the key turned forward but would not spring back into place.the ignition housing return spring anchor point fractured causing the return spring forces to be faulty for returning the ignition key to the proper position after starting the vehicle.the service dealer was notified who determined that the original parts were replaced under recall campaign id#00v317000.the contact insisted that even though the original parts were replaced, the replaced parts may have been faulty.the service dealer refused to remedy the problem under the recall.the manufacturer was notified, and determined that it was not an open campaign.

The contact owns a 1997 audi a4.the vehicle was repaired for nhtsa recall number 06v403000 (ignition switch).when the contact went to retrieve the vehicle from the dealer, it failed to start.the dealer stated that they could only release the keys and vehicle to a tow service.the invoice stated that the repairs were made.the contact stated that this is the only audi dealer in his area.the manufacturer stated that they are unable to provide any assistance.the current and failure mileages were 165,522.the consumer stated to the audi back to fix and the vin should show car could drive normally to dealership. The consumer stated dealership sabotaged car and drafted false documents. Updated 08/24/07

The contact owns a 1997 audi a4.in january of 2004, the contact was informed of a recall on his vehicle regarding the ignition switch.the dealer performed the recall repair for free; however, the ignition switch failed in 2007.the dealer conducted a visual inspection.a technician stated that because the replacement had been done in 2004, a new ignition switch would not be necessary.on june 9, 2008, the ignition switched failed again.when the failure occurred, the contact was unable to turn off the vehicle.as a result, the battery drained.he took the vehicle to the dealer again and they stated once more that because the vehicle was previously repaired under recall, they were not responsible.the vehicle was repaired at the owner's expense.the recall number was unknown.the failure mileage was 67,487 and current mileage was 141,500.

Failure in ignition switch.*mrthe ignitionswitch failed which caused the starter to remain partly engaged damaging it beyond repair.a technician at the dealer notified the consumer that the problem was the subject of a recall which the consumer responded to on september 2001.at that time the dealer replaced it with a redesigned one.the manufacturer considered the failure normal wear.the original switch was replace at 63136 miles the second was replaced at 102692. *nlm

Re: 1997 audi a4; recall campaign le, electrical ignition switch.the vehicle's ignition switch was replaced in 2001 prior to any failure.a few years later the switch failed in the same manner that prompted the initial recall.the ignition switch blew up the starter causing $1100 in damage.the consumer contacted the manufacturer and was told that since it was already replaced once that there was nothing they could do.

1997 audi a4 ignition switch replaced twice. Once regarding a recall notice. Second time switch failed the same as in the recall notice.

Consumer stated a spring broke inside the ignition switch. As a result, starter stayed on while driving and currently failed.

I have a 1997 audi a4 q that has a common defect with the ignition switch. This is a very well known problem with these cars and because of the defect there has been a recall already done for this car (nhtsa campaign id number 00v317000) as of oct 06,2000. I called the a local dealer and the manufacturer and gave them my vin # and they claim my car was not part of the recall. However, i went to the nhtsa website and looked at the make, model and year of my car and it does show that the year of my car was included. In fact, i was even able to print off several documents referring to the recall and it does show that my vin is actually included (vin ranges wau---8d-va000181 to wau---8d-va294397). Quoting the recall letter; "the plastic ignition switch housing can fracture at the return spring anchor point. Fracture of the housing could cause the return spring force to be insufficient for returning the ignition key to the running position after starting the engine. " this is exactly what has happened to my car () making it unsafe to operate.

Dt*:the contact stated while turning the key to the start position with the engine running, the key will not back into the on position and as a result, the starter grinded.the key must be manually moved back to the start position.there is a nhtsa recall # 00v317000, concerning the ignition switch.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.the vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer.the manufacturer has been alerted.updated 03/20/06.

(1)i received a recall notice (le recall) from audi of america on the ignition switch on my 1997 a4 sedan.the recall work was performed on 1/29/03.at that point in time the original ignition switch had been performing correctly for 59 months but i had it replaced because of audi's recommendation;not because it had a malfunction.(2)in july of 2004 the replacement ignition switch failed after approximately 18 months of service.the failure occurred while i was visiting st. Augustine, florida.i noticed that the a/c was not blowing cold air.as i was driving back in to the town of st. Augustine i heard what sounded like something dragging under the car.i pulled into a parking lot and then found the car would not re-start.i had the car towed to the nearest audi dealer in jacksonville, florida and then rented a car to get back home to tampa, florida.the bill from the jacksonville dealership was $1758 to replace the ignition switch and the starter motor.i also incurred a $150 towing fee and approx $70 rental car fee.(3)after the repairs i contacted audi of america but they said they only warranty replaced parts for 12 months.since this switch lasted 18 months it was my responsibility to pay for the repairs.i contend that audi of america did not correct the defect, in fact, they made it considerably worse.vin of 1997 a4 is [xxx](4)please note:i am also the owner of a 1996 a4 sedan.i will open another incident report for that automobile.updated 07/18/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

The vehicles ignition switch is failing intermittently, the key will not return to be disengaged from the starter causing the lights, wipers and turn signals to be inoperative, the consumer is requesting that audi honor recall 00v-317 and repair the vehicle.nlm

Audi safety recall js - ignition switch repaired customer wants to be reimbursed for repairs made from an outside dealer**nar**cc 06/06/07 add to letter send from office of att general**ccthe consumer was denied reimbursement because the repair was not made at an authorized dealership and because the consumer waited several months to execute the repair.

The failure i am having is with my ignition switch. When turning on the car, the ignition key does not return to the proper position after the engine has been started.this causes electrical accessories, such as windshield wipers, headlights, power windows, and heating/air conditioning to be inoperative after starting the car.also, when turning off the car the key does not turn all the way to the off position.this results in difficulty in removing and reinserting the key, and it also does not cut off all power resulting in a dead battery on several occasions when i returned to the car, and it also does not activate the anti theft alarm system.this vehicle had a recall for this exact same problem in 2001, and the dealer claims to have changed the defective part however the problem has resurfaced.paul miller audi was not willing to correct the problem at their cost.

Prior to recall, vehicle would not start and the steering wheel locked up, consumer stated that ignition switch was replaced twice and it seems that the problem has resurfaced again, dealer claims to know nothing about the recall.

Dt*: the contact stated the windshield wipers intermittently failed to operate.there was a nhtsa recall, #00v317000 on the vehicle regarding the ignition switch.the contact expressed the windshield wiper failure was related to the recall.however, the dealer determined the failure of the windshield wiper motor was not included in the recall.

Recall 00 v 317 000/ignition switch: dealer capistrano volkswagen; capistrano, ca; phone# 949/493-4843 refused to honor recall notice.asking nhtsa to assist in this matter. Feel free to provide any further information concerning this problem.

Consumer not able to return key to running position after starting vehicle.current recall 00v317000.consumer contacted dealer ,who advisedconsumer that this vehicle was not covered under current recall due to vin.

After the dealership performed the ignition switch recall the defect reoccurred. Dealership was refusing the fix the problem, indicating that the ignition switch component that failed was not the recalled component.

Dt: the key wouldn't go into the ignition, and then the radio wouldn't go off. Then, the signal lights and the air conditioner wouldn't work. After researching about the recall for the ignition switch contacted the dealer and audi, and they both said the ignition switch defect, recall 00v317000, had already been fixed, but there was no documentation. Was concerned that if it was already replaced then it should not malfunction within a short period of time.

Recall 00v317000: ignition switch defect.i have a 1997 audi a4 vin [xxx] that was repaired under the recall in jan 2004.the symptoms prompting the recall have reoccurred (wipers and light not working due to switch defect).took car to the dealer who status recall work was warranted for 1 year or 12000 miles so they will not fix at their expense. The vechile is 8 years old this year. Is there any requirement the the recall remendy work?it appears they put in a part that has the same defect that lead to the recall.updated 07/25/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Ignition switch failure causing various components within the elctrical system to malfunction.yh

Ignition switch had to be replaced twice in the last 18 months. Manufacturer refused to cooperate.

Consumer called complaining about havingignition switch problems. There was a recall on 2000, which he had it done .a few months later it burned the startertwice. Manufacturee was contacted, and stated thatmanufacturer was not responsible for it.

The contact owns a 1997 audi a4.the vehicle was serviced for recall # 06v403000 (electrical system:ignition:switch).when the vehicle was picked up from the dealer, the battery was dead and had to be jump started.the vehicle failed to restart after being driven 25 miles and then parked.the dealer stated that the battery failure was unrelated to the recall repair.the contact purchased a new battery, but the vehicle still would not start.a local mechanic stated that the cause of failure was the starter and the wire was burned to the starter.the engine size was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 76,000.

While driving 45 mphvehicle stalled, either timing belt or timing belt tensioner was cause for stalling.

1997 audi a4 quattro lease with engine problems customer states that audi corporation is fully aware of the problems with slog and did not send him a letter**ccthe consumer stated the oil pump failed which caused oil starvation to the engine, which now sounds like a diesel engine.the consumer mechanics informed the consumer that the manufacturer was fully aware of an oil sludge problem from the use of inferior engine oil or from infrequent oil changes, can clog the oil pump. The consumer stated he never received a letter regarding an oil sludge problem.

I have contacted audi of america several times because i do not feel i should be responsible for the charges incurred of approximately $4000.due to the fact the new tensionser purchased from the dealer is totally different then the original and due to the failed tensioner / timing belt damaged my cylinder head and valves.

While driving the vehicle timing gear belt broke, causing to pull out of the road. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information.ts

While driving, the vehicle stalled on the road due to timing belt failure resulting in major engine damage.

Timing belt tensioner failed at 64k.mechanic said that the timing belt was virtually under no tension and would have failed immediately if not caught by a vibrating sound from idle to 2200rpm.

I was told by the dealer that the control arms are failing because audi didn't provide for lubrication points.. They had no explanation for the loss of the engine mount bolts, and could not respond when i said i had never owned a car that had lost it's engine mount bolts.. Obviously this has also got to be a problem caused by poor design and engine vibration.. These bolts should be safety wired to prevent this problem. I think audi should cover the costs of replacement of the control arm and engine mount, but the differential problem could be due to wear, although again i don't have this problem on my jeep or other vehicles.

While driving about 50 mph all of a sudden engine stalled.then, vehicle was towed, and a techinician said it was a broken timing belt.consumer believed that this wastoo early to happen.

Timing belt had to be replaced at 60,000 miles which interfered with engine valves, valves were bent. While traveling the engine stopped running.vehicle was towed to the mechanic and identified that the starter was broken.the starter was replaced but further diagnosis led to finding that the timing belt broke which caused the starter to fail, bending valves and damaging the head.all were replaced.*jg

Plaza motors has ignored complaints. Am now using parktown.better, but am ready to get rid of car because problems are persisting.do not feel that audi even cares. No safety defect mentioned in the summary.

We have experienced an oil sludge related failure on our 1997 audi a4.ingrid evert, from the office of audi of america's mark trahan, has told me that my car will not be covered by their extended warranty, despite the fact that my car is within the vin range affected by what is, in her words, a "manufacturing defect".her reason for refusal is the fact that i change my own oil and thus lack receipts. So, although my car is within the affected vin range, and i have performed all oil changes in excess of the manufacturer's recommendations, and many owners are experiencing this failure regardless of the maintenance performed on the car, my car is not covered.

The timing belt broke, which caused damaged to the engine.

A/c compressor failure caused car to die while driving.low mileage of car indicates that part is defective.defect like this is very dangerous, as it could have caused an accident. I was lucky but the next person might not be.dt

Headlight switch failed while driving on paved highway at approximately 60 mph at 11:30 pm.failure caused all headlights to stop functioning, thereby leaving the driver and passenger in total darkness at cruising speed.extreme potential for fatal accident.this is the 4th time this switch has failed.

At high speedsvehicle died occasionally. Dealer replacedfuel pump/relay.manufacturer has been notified.

Transmission prematurely failed and without prior warningdue to a piece of metal inside transmission that shreaded off.

While driving at any speed vehicle stalled. Driver drovevehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that transmissioncontrol module needed to be replaced.

Dt:periodically clutch will not realease and this disables consumer from driving.sometimes when startingthe car and other times when i shift on the highway.

Transmission is shot and has to be replaced.

Operation of this a4 configuration at speeds lower than 8 m.p.h. Requires either that the operator lug the engine (i.e., run at less than the recommended 1500 r.p.m. In first gear) or not close the clutch completely.this design defect has lead to excessive clutch wear, requiring two replacements in less than 52,000 miles and two incidents of clutch overheating, with smoke.a potential fire hazard exists if the vehicle is operated at less than 4 m.p.h. For an extended period (e.g., more than 30 minutes) as may be expected in certain metropolitan traffic jams. The clutch design is also unsuitable for dynamic braking, showing excessive wear, thereby contributing to premature failure and the fire hazard.the a4 is otherwise a very fine automobile.the manufacturer should correct this design defect asap through provision of a low gear, six-speed option, adjustment of ratios or similar remedy.

The contact owns a 1997 audi a4. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the brakes failed when engaged. The contact was attempting to stop for a traffic stop but the vehicle did not respond.the failure was recurring. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 70,000.

Braking performance seems to be dramatically reduced in wet, and especially wet and cold, conditions.this happens often, but does not happen regularly, and always after prolonged high-speed driving without brake application.the reduction in performance seems much more dramatic than would be expected from typical reduction in brake performance in these conditions.

Lack of stopping when brakes are wet. At 1000 mi replaced all pads with german spec oem pads. Wet braking problems neglable. Did not need to wash underware as often.

Significant braking delay under wet conditions.

Control arm bushing started squeaking indicating failure - did not know that the vehicle's instability at higher speeds and inability to track in a straight line were also due to worn control arm bushings.searched www.audiworld.com site of audi owners, found that numerous owners report driveablilty issues with worn control arm bushings.audi of america and audi dealer states that bushing problem is not a safety issue, however based on the numerous reports on audiworld.com, this is not true.owners report having to change control arms every 35k miles or so at a cost of approximately $1,500 for each side since ther are 4 control arms on each side that cost approximately $300 each plus labor.based on ntsa search, there are a number of complaints of this same problem; what will it take to get a recall of this potentially serious problem?brake problem is only when driving in wet conditions.brakes do not respond normally - apparently water comes in contact with rotors easily.this problem could easily lead to an accident and there are numerous complaints about this in the ntsa database as well.the idle air control valve problem is a reoccurring one where the engine will stall at idle, or will not idle at all.with a manual transmission, this is especially dangerous as the engine sometimes dies when the clutch is depressed as you prepare to stop.obviously this results in a loss of power braking and steering which could cause an accident.please feel free to contact me regarding any or all of these potentially dangerous conditions affecting my car.obviously i would like to see recalls on all three issues and will provide whatever assistance i can to ensure that this happens.thanks.

Wet braking delay.brake rotors seem to gather water onhighway -even in light rain, and cause delayed stopping.when the pedal is pushed down it can take a couple seconds for the brakes to repond, causing an unsafe condition in emergency situations.

Very poor initial braking in wet conditions, ex. Rain or snow.

The brakes don't grab when driving in rain, snow, sleet etc.there's a "lag" of a second or two before the car begins to stop.this happens every time you attempt to stop the car in these conditions regardless of speed.there are no brake backing plates on the front rotors from the factory.the rotors are obviously getting glazed with water and the pads are ineffective until the rotors are cleared of water.makes for a very dangerous driving condition in inclement weather!

In wet weather, the effectiveness of the brakes is greatly reduced. There is about a 3 second delay before brakes begin to grab.

Wet braking. Brakes failed to grab in a timely fashion, major delay in braking action led to my hitting the brake harder causing vehicle to skid sideways on a slippery roadway into another vehicle.

Vehicle had brake work completed.

The a4, unlike all other cars i've ever owned, does not have 'splash shields' inboard of the front disc brake rotors.in the rain, this causes a quite alarming period, when the brakes are initially applied, of sheer terror, because the car is not stopping!this has been made a mandatory recall all across europe, and there, insurance companies won't cover you if you rear-end someone and don't have the shields on.i see no reason why audi won't also carry this to the us, until they get sued when someone gets killed because of it. Switching to gas-slotted brake rotors helps this situation, but does not eliminate it.thanks, and i hope this gets taken care of before i hit someone! oh, every single person with an a4 that i know has the same problem.

Disc brakes are not adequately shielded from water while driving in the rain or snow, resulting in no braking effort for approximately the first two seconds of brake application. The brakes are fine in dry weather, but always catch me by surprise in the wet, when you step on the pedal nothing happens until the water is shed from the brake discs.nlm

1) failure of front left (driver side) hydraulic brake hose at caliper end at inboard side of hose strain relief.the damage location appears to be where hose is subject to maximum stress and flexing when front wheels turn.further inspection revealed concealed damage to right (passenger) front brake hose at the same location.2) consequence was loss of all hydraulic braking when hose burst, resulting in minor accident.damage to vehicles was minor because of good fortune to have failure at low speed--no injuries resulted.3) front hydraulic brake hoses were replaced with new oem hoses supplied by audi dealer.because both hoses exhibited similar wear, other audi a4 vehicles 10 years old and/or with 100,000+ miles may be subject to similar front brake hose failures.

My 1997 audi a4 has experiencedalmost non braking in cold/wet conditions.when brakes are initially applied during these conditions there is almost zero braking for 50 feet at 35 mph or less.i have come very close to rear ending a few cars that cut in front of you.i have contacted audi of america and there response was that no known poor braking condition exists when brakes are cold/wet.yet there is a news bulletin on audi's own european web site indicating that there is a problem with brakes when wet.also many readers on the www.a4.org web site here in the us have been complaining for a long time.i hope that you would please look into this matter as a fatality can exist in this case.i have owned many us/european/japanese vehicles and never experienced such poor wet braking!

Two steering control arms have failed.

Vehicle is experiencing the same defect with the tie rods as stated in recall number 99 v 248 000, but vehicle is not included, cause recall is on the later year vehicle.please provide more details. Ts

Front control arms

The lower front control arms in my '97 audi a4 1.8t quattro were replaced by an authorized audi dealer as part of a voluntary recall campaign in 2004 by audi to replace a noted defective part. A class action lawsuit brought against audi by several owners spurred the voluntary recall. My lower control arms need replacing again, based on an inspection by an independent mechanic. When i contacted audi customer service i was told that the 2004 control arm recall had a one-year warranty and after that time i was responsible for the replacement cost, which exceeds $2,000 for the lower front control arms. This is the second time this defective part needs replacing and it is a safety issue. Numerous audi owners have reported repeated lower control arm failure and nhtsa is urged to call a mandatory recall for audi to repair this defective part so it does not need to be replaced by owners every few years.

Front control arms are notorious for making clunking noise. You can replace them every 6 months and problem starts all over. This is safety design flaw that audi needs to assist in repairs or recall.

Consumer has been noticing creaking noises infront ofvehicle.consumer took vehicle to the repair shop.they informed consumer there was arepair kit put together for vehicle of the same model for repair of this creaking noise.but consumer would be responsible for all costs.consumer feels this should be covered under a recall or the pre owned vehicle warranty.

There have been cracking noises in the front suspension. Concerned that something would be breaking, i took the car to a service shop that does work for the audi dealership. They indicated that the cracking was a problem already identified by audi and a kit has been assembled to fix it. When wepurchased the audi, we were assured that we had the special audi assured for preowned vehicles. Well when we called them to fix the problem. They denied everything and proceeded to tell me that it was wear and tear and therefore i had to pay for it.since when do auto makers issue an alert with a fix it kit for all a4 s from 1996 to 1998 and claim it is the owners fault. This is a design problem that they refuse to acknowledge. I called customer service and they were rude to the point of saying that it isn't their problem. It is mine. I sent a complaint to the nys attorney general's office with assorted attachments and they replied on sept 6, 2002 said that they had forwarded the information on to you and to contact nhtsa if i had not heard something in a reasonable amount of time. It has been 2 months and i have not heard from you.would you please check your records and locate the form from the nys atty gens office and get back to me with some info. I really think audi should pay for these repairs since it is a design or manufacturing defect and not from use by the owners (the previous owner and me). Thank you for your anticipated help and thank you for listening to me.dt

On two occasions the front control arms failed.nlm

Upper and lower control arms (all 4) for the front suspension have failed and must be replace again.squeezing/crunching noise at low speed and over bumps.have been replaced- less than 15k miles ago by audi dealer and they've worn out already.this is a poor design and audi needs to come through with a solution for its customers.this is a several thousand dollar repair job!*nlm

Front control arm ball joints clunk and squeak, they require replacement due to poor design.

The control arms are part of the suspension. The front axle has 8 control arms in total. Went to the dealer and they explained that 6 of the control arms will cost me $2000. They also explained that this is not covered under warranty and that the manufacturer is not responsible for its malfunction. Apparently the part malfunctions is a myriad of cases with a4 and the part was never recalled. Now i have to repair a part that costs 1/7 the cost of the car because audi is too cheap to stand by its product. I did nothing wrong--was not due to wear and tear or aggressive driving. Simply put by the dealer, "it just happens." if you investigate this problem you will notice there is a trend with this constant problem. Please help.

Control arms went bad. There's noise when turning and going over bumps.*la

Audi (97 a4 quattro) has issued a safety recall related to control arms - offering free replacement. They further state that if the control arms have already been replaced, they will reimburse all costs. I have my car maintained faithfully, usually by a dealer, but i did not have the formal 90k mile check done. Since i did not follow their formal process, they are refusing to pay for the repair. (this is not a "maintainable part", so the only fix, if indicated at 90k miles, would have been replacement).audi's position seems unreasonable, given the "unrepairability factor".

Failing lower control arms.

Every 30,000 miles to 40,000 miles the lower control arms failed. When this occurred, the front end made a clanking noise, and the front wheelsloosened. Consumercontacted the dealer and the manufacturer, and was offered 50% of total repair cost by the manufacturer.

Left and right lower control arms (2 on each side for a total of 4) were severly worn, and have been for quite some time prior to my having the defect inspected. With the car on lift, the ball joint could be pulled out of it's socket with little effort. Had i hit a bump at a high rate of speed, this could easily cause loss of control. I am contacting audi as well, but haven't as of this writing.

Both of the vehicle's front lower control arms failed.the consumer previously owned a 1882 audi 4000 and a 1985 audi 4000s quattro. *sc

Control arm failure, front passenger side.resulted in loss of steering control and veering into a curb, damaging the vehicle ($2000+), insurance would not cover the failed part (esurance).it was extremely fortunate that i was going only 35 mph, that no one was standing or driving where i hit that curb.

At 31700 miles i noticed a bulge in the sidewall of the left front tire.i replaced both front tires with the identical brand.at 41239 miles, i again noticed a large bulge in the left front tire in the sidewall.i again will have the tires replaced before i have a blow-out. I have read other reviews on this tire and it seems many others have experienced the same problem.it could be quite hazardous if i didn't catch the problem before driving at highway speeds.(tiresize: p205 55 16)( dot number:tire size: p205 55 16 )

Instrument panel lights malfunctioning.

There is a rattle in the dashboard near the instrument panel, dealer replaced the instrument panel, but rattle still exists, also the upholstery in the vehicle has worn out prematurely, it was replaced on feb 20, 2000, but immeditely starting showings signs of wear within a couple of weeks, and also a cut in the leather on the steering wheel.

Sudden acceleration.

Apparently related to case: ea04017i was driving a 1997 audi a4 2.8l v6 quattro at the time of the incident:i was driving 55-mph on the taconic state parkway in new york, around noon (ambient temperature ~30f above zero). I had been driving for over an hour when i noticed that the car was accelerating to nearly 70-mph down hills but my foot was not on the accelerator. My cruise control was on at the time and set to 55-mph, so i turned it off but the problem kept occurring. I tried braking as i went down hills and that slowed me down enough to keep the car under 55-mph. I found a rest area, slowed the car down with my brakes and came to a safe stop (fortunately there was no one in the rest area). When i came to a stop, the engine rpms were at about 3500 but it usually idles at 1000. I shifted into park and the rpms shot up to 7000 before i turned the key off and the engine shut off. I tried pumping the accelerator pedal with the car off and tried turning the car back on, but the rpms shot up again quickly so, again, i turned of the ignition (i tried this 3 times before getting out of the car). Then i got out of the car, waited about 15 minutes, got back in the car and tried starting it again. It started up fine and idled at the normal 1000 level. I drove another 30 minutes to my destination without the cruise control on. The failure did not occur again, and has not happened since (i have not used the cruise control since, either).i had a mechanic check for failure codes with an obdii scan tool, but no error codes came up. He also could not see any problems with the throttle cable, so i have been driving it cautiously ever since.thanks for your help! let's get to the bottom of this problem.

While driving, vehicle all by itself gave full speed after being accelerated slowly beyond the speed onto the cruise control system, the vehicle did not respond anymore to the usual switch off commands of the system, consumer pushed the resume button but vehicle steadily accelerated further towards full speed, dealership investigated the defect, and stated a loose screw of the cruise control system as the problem, which moved in a such a way that blocked the rope of the accelerator at full speed.( consumer writing from over seas, zum morgengraben 6, 65835 liederbach germany, phone#0049-69-318541)

Both the cruise control and the headlight washer vaccum pumps shorted out at the same time after 40000 miles.nothing was done by the owners other then normal driving the might be associated with the number of ingintion switches problems noted on audi 4's.

I have a 97 audi a4 2.8 . Quattro.i have ahad numerous repairs on this vehicle.the most recent problem is that a control arm on the sunroof (appears to be a powder metal part about 1 inch in size) has broken.this break requires that the the complete sunroof be replaced at a cost of $1300.i was interested to known if others have complained about similar failures on audis or vws.thanks!
