2008 toyota highlander purchased used toyota certified 9-3-09 fails to shift into gear. Most occurrences at low speed after slowing to 5mph vehicle does not respond to gas pedal - or will not engage into gear and move forward. This occurs or is most noticeable at slow speeds when the gas pedal is pushed after having slowed down or in the midst of a turn into a parking spot. Wife has also complained about transmissionnot engaging into gear when car is first started up acts like you didn't shift it into gear. We have also noted transmission doesn't always seem to disengage when slowing from highway speeds 55 mph.feels like it is dragging car to stop. There is a noticeable whine between 55 - 62 mph. Talked to dealer mechanic and he said that was normal everything is controlled by computers. We are going to take it back in this week and complain about the transmission slippage.we have also had a issue with the toyo tires. At 28,345 they were down to 5/32 to 4/32. They have major problems in snow and heavy rain with loss of traction. When esc kicks on in the snow on a turn do to sliding at slow speed it makes matters worse be better off with it turned off.
The 245-55x19 toyo open country a20 tires toyota specs on highlander limited models are utterly treacherous on ice or snow.edmunds.com documents a huge number of winter traction complaints under used cars> toyota> 2008> highlander limited> customer comments.in my own case, starting under 15 mmph i slid under 8 lanes of interstate viaduct, anti-lock brakes pulsing all the while, before my car stopped.the toyos are 1 of only 2 tires from any mfr in the size noted, the other being a bridgestone with equally horrific ice/snow traction ratings at tirerack and discount tire.toyota refuses any assistance, saying the tires are tire manufacturer warranted.the problem?i would be getting exactly the same tire again, and the a20 tire is the problem to begin with.i replaced the toyo's with another make and size at 15,900 miles (for $900) and they transformed my highlander completely winter traction-wise.this toyo tire needs to be banned entirely, yet toyota continues to spec them on new vehicles.
2011 toyota highlander with less than 13k miles has tires with very little tread left on them.was told by toyota tech that it needs new tires.less than one year old and the tires are balding.this poses a safety hazard and is not acceptable.

The contact owns a 1995 dodge ram 2500 equipped with toyo tires open country a/t size lt26570r17. The dot number was not available. The contact stated that the driver's side front passenger tires blew due to tread separation while he drove 45-65 mph, causing damaged to the running board and bed. The manufacturer denied assistance with the repair. The passenger suffered injuries to the lower back. The tires were replaced. The tire failure mileage was 22,000. Rk
I was traveling down an interstate when a rear tire blew out. The tire is a toyo cross country a/t. He tire separated completely leaving the sidewalls on the rim and the tread & belts & rest of the tire tore off in one piece. Luckily, there was no accident/ injury. I looked up recalls and found there is a recall. I did not receive a notice. I have tried to contact toyo and been on hold for over an hour at a time, left message without return call. The tires have less than 20,000 miles on them. I am now very concerned about the safety of the three remaining tires. There was only minor property damage to the truck.
2016 toyota highlander with oem toyo 245/55r19 open country m&s 103t tires at about 70 mph on i95 south board near brunswick ga (exit 38?) , a loud bang was heard and then the bumping made it obvious a tire had failed so the vehicle was stopped well of the road near an exit.the local state highway assistance truck (champ) stopped afterabout 20 minutes andthe toyota response service truck showed up about 20 minutes later - the tire was changed and we proceeded on our way - many thanks to the "road ranger" and his truck and expertise!the tires had about 28,500 miles on them - estimate about 55%of original tread and are marked:dot 78hh cnd 1016.there appears to have been a hole in the sidewall that caused sudden loss of pressure.
Tire falling apart and flaking including premature wearing on factory oem toyo open country 245-55x19 a20 tires which were on my 2008 toyota highlander purchase brand new on jul 2008. Approximate current mileage is 20,195. All tires are showing the same abnormal wear as verified by toyota dealer. There are numerous online complaints of similar owners with pictures of the unusual wearing. Mine are worse than are described as concurred by toyota service advisors.
Left rear tire on our 2016 toyota highlander begin to loose air while passing a semi truck on the interstate highway. The tire pressure alarm notified the driver of tire pressure loss for an emergency stop. Upon a complete stop the tire pressure had dropped about 85 % or so, (not flat but very near so and completed the air loss within a short time after stopping).. We know this because i was following behind my wife driving the highlander at the time. Travel speed was between 65 and 70 mph at the time. The tires are the original that came on the toyota new and had about 27000 miles on them. Upon inspection of the tire it looks obvious that the tire was defective due to the substantial amount of visual crumbled rubber all inside the tire separated from the sidewalls in side and the massive blisters on the outside of the tire, we had all the tires replaced on the vehicle as we had no trust in the rest of the tires after this happened. Neither the toyo tire manufacturer rep., the local toyota dealership, or the toyota company would take responsibility for the failure, or offered any concessions against the replacement tires. Photos of the tire and or the tire itself is available for nhtsa if there is a request to review. Poor customer service from the toyo tire manufacturer, the local dealership or the toyota company is quite obvious to us that they had no concern for other people that may have the same toyo tires that toyota choose to put on the new vehicle that may cause an accident.the tire brand is toyo, tire line is open country, tire size 245-55-19 dot # 73hh(cnd2216)
The contact owns toyo open country a20 tires, size 245/55/r19, dot# cxhhdk84607. While the contact was having her vehicle inspected she noticed that all 4 tires were experiencing adnormal tread wear. The tires were taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the tires were experiencing normal wear. There were no prior warnings and the current and failure mileages were 30000.updated 4/28/10 updated 06/11/10.
The right rear tire on a 2010 toyota highlander failed.it went completely flat overnight.i have not found any evidence of a foreign object lodged in the tire.when i tried to add air, i could hear it hissing out.not clear if it was a puncture, tire crack or some other tire failure.i have not yet taken it to a dealer, but plan to do so.the vehicle had only 2,950 miles on it.the tire was a toyo open country a-20.
The contact owns a 2008 toyota highlander hybrid equipped with toyo open country a20 tires. The contact stated that she noticed that three of the original tires (excluding the front passenger by another tire manufacturer) on the vehicle were beginning to shred. The contact stated that it seemed as if someone took a "cheese grater" to the tires. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the dealer stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle or the tires; they did state that they would replace two of the tires. The contact had not spoken with the manufacturer at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 22,000. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.
