My inside dual tire sidewall unzipped at 60mph on my sprinter based mini- motorhome while traveling north on i-5.no unusual events prior to hearing a loud bang.this was the first tire failure on my vehicle.( i have since learned of dozens of similar failures on vehicles like mine using the same oem tire manufactured by kumho).my sprinter (and oem tires) have only 23,300 miles on them. When the tire blew i reduced my speed and had the blown tire replaced with a spare at the next available service location.on the same day i took my vehicle and damaged tire to the nearest kumho dealer.he contacted kumho in my presence.kumho refused to accept any responsibility.the next day i took the failed tire to the kumho dealer in my hometown.kumho offered a pro-rated allowance on the failed tire which i refused now knowing of the many failures and fearing possible injury to my family and others on the highway if all the tires were not replaced. I requested my local kumho dealer go up the chain of command at kumho for a pro-rated allowance on all six tires.no response as of this date.i still have the failed tire in my possession and am arranging to have all tires replaced with something other than kumho tires.it is clear there is a manufacturing defect for which kumho has refused to accept responsibility.i am fortunate my failure was on a dual, was detected by a tpms system, and did not result in any property damage or personal injury.others may not be so lucky.
On september 12, 2011, a kumho road venture at tire, size lt235/85r16, dot k2oryd4a3508 (manufactured at kumho?s binh duong plant in vietnam in the 35th week of 2008) suffered a catastrophic tread separation, resulting in severe injuries to the front seat passenger of the ford f-250 and the death of her son, who was 32 weeks old and still in utero.a lawsuit has been filed against kumho tire co., inc. And kumho tire u.s.a., inc. In the united states district court for the district of kansas (case no. 2:13-cv-02393-jtm-tjj).during the discovery stage of the case, the passenger retained troy cottles, a renowned tire failure expert.after inspecting the subject tire, mr. Cottles found the following defects in the subject tire:(1) inadequate bonding between belts (trapped air/steam blister impressions); (2) premature oxidation of the belt skims; (3) belting defects (coincidental belt endings, irregular belt wire spacing, gapped belt splices, dog-eared splices, snaking, and spread cables); (4) cord shadows on the innerliner; (5) low top belt width to tread width ratio; and (6) inadequate application of nylon cap plies.as part of his work on the case, mr. Cottles tested two exemplar kumho road venture at tires of the same size as the subject tire that were also manufactured at kumho?s vietnam plant.both of those tires failed in sidewall failure mode in approximately 10,000 miles or less under proper loads, inflations, and speeds that were monitored daily.see attached test reports and photographs.this information is being submitted by the attorneys for the injured passenger, and with her permission, in hopes that this tire (and those similar to it) will be investigated and recalled to ensure no one else is needlessly injured or killed as a result of these dangerous and defective tires....updated 07/30/15 updated 10/23/2017

I have a mb 2015 sprinter passenger van with 14,345 miles. The vehicle has kumho road venture atp/m 245/75r16 tires. On a family trip this summer the right rear tire started to cause a jumping vibration. It was caused by tire belt separation. This issue placed my wife and my two 9 year old children along with others in harms way. I have seen in websites all the issues of tire belt separation kumho tires are having. At this point i have the vehicle sitting in y driveway until i can get a resolution to this problem. Kumho should be held accountable for all these tire issues and be responsible to correct the problem to all the customers who have this issue.

Kuhmo tire road venture at 215 85r16 tread separated from casing causing minor damage to my 09 monaco covina motor home.these tires came as original equipment on the monaco.this is the fourth of seven of these tires that has failed in this fashion.the tires have been inspected, rotated, and maintained at appropriate air pressure.i contacted kuhmo and they agreed to replace the two tires that threw off rubber on my last trip with the monaco.i just completed another trip (the first since replacing the two original defective tires) and had two more go bad within a day of each other.the monaco has less than 30,000 miles on it.it was not overloaded nor are there any mechanical deficiencies.both tires were on the rear outside of duals.both appeared to have blistered prior to tread separation.in the previous incidents, one front and one rear inside dual separated.both held air allowing transportation to a tire shop for replacement.there must be a systemic problem with these tires.please investigate and recall if appropriate.

Kumho kl78 245/75r16 load range e tire. Purchased a set of kl78 tires in november 2011 for my 3/4 truck. Since the time of purchase i have put less than 20,000 miles on the truck / tires. Three of the tires have developed large deformation across the tread cap, like a bulge. This is a manufacturing safety defect caused by the separation of steel belts of the tire allowing the rubber to deform.
Subject: develop a noticeable blister on the sidewall, which may eventually result in tire air pressure lossall 4 kumho road venture at-kl78 have large blisters on side walls. You canpush the blisters in with your fingers. They look to be ready to pop. I checked the recall list and find the latest tire recalls from the national highway traffic safety administration and my tires are part of the recall. I did not receive any notification and would ask for you to send me a recall replacement authorization for my tires.
Driving at 55 mph on hwy 528about 20 miles east of orlando, the truck began to shake and then we suffered a catastrophic tread separation of our rear driver's side tire. We were trailering a camper at the time.by the time i was able to bring the truck to a stop on the shoulder of the highway we had sustained close to $3000 worth of damage to the rear driver's side fender and wheel well.this was the 2nd kumho lt 245/75 r16 of the set that had a separation.the first one we were able to slow done in time to prevent any damage to the vehicle. The tires only had 18000 miles on them and inflation pressures had been checked within 24 hours of the incident each time.after calling kumho several times after the 1st incident, they gave a 67 dollar credit on the tire.the second time they have not returned my multiple phone calls.i have now replaced and kept the remaining tires of the set.i kept them hoping that nhtsa would take them for testing.i filed a complaint by phone with nhtsa on 11/3015 and meko told me i would be receiving forms in the mail to complete the complaint. It has now been over 2 months, and i have not received anything from you!my complaint # was 10807471.these are dangerous faulty tires and need to be recalled.someone needs to hold kumho responsible fro these tires before more lives are lost secondary to catastrophic separations.
I have had 4 kumho light truck tires fail on my motorhome this summer in rapid succession.every time they were replaced, i was told by the technician that it appeared to be a manufacturing defect.the belt separated internally.i have had to replace them at my own expense and the kumho tire representative was not even interested in having the dot number.i believe this to be a life safety issue and that a recall should be initiated.
Upon returning home from a 3560 mile trip we discovered one flat tire on the inside right dual wheel of our 2010 fleetwood quest motorhome and two buldges on the outside of the left outside dual tire and what appeared to be a flap of rubber sticking out of the left inside dual tire. We then drove, very slowly a short distance, to our local discount tire co.the discount tire salesman, called kumho tire co. Explaining the visible failure of the tires. Our salesman said the kumho representative on the phone knew exactly which tire he was referring to. On further examination of the 6 tires plus the original spare all were kumho road venture at lt 215/85r16 tires.5 of the tires were found to have serious defects of belt package separation (all 4 dual wheel tires as well as the front tire on the driver's side). The salesman had also measured the tread saying it was excellent with little sign of wear. Kumho is paying 62 percent of the cost of 6 new kumho tires directly through discount tire which we were able to apply to 6 new michelins tires , as we do not feel confident in kumho tires. The discount tire salesman said it's obvious our kumhos had a serious production defect and he was surprised we had not had at least one of our tires lose a complete tread and cause major damage. We are so thankful as we realize we could have had a serious accident.
