Mullahey and atascadero ford, two dealerships, said they could not exchange my tires because there was no recall on them.wayne's tires, a general dealer, replaced the shredded tire but would give me only a 50% discount in replacing the other three.again, because there was no recall on those tires.at 10,000 miles a tire should not disintegrate while going 50 mph.i didn't feel safe on those tires, and just because there was no recall on them didn't mean they were.if you bought a new pair of shoes and the right shoe's sole came apart, wouldn't you think the left one would do the same?ford and general see no point in preventively maintenance and will do nothing until a recall is issued.i wonder how many firestone tragedies could have been prevented if these dealerships had listened to their consumers.how many maimings, deaths, and lawsuits do they need before they take action.i, for one, will not stand by idly and serve as their "crash-test dummy"another statistic accrued until the numbers are right for a recall.i hope this administration can help me get the remaining balance ($160) of my tires.dealerships can do a lot to prevent further mishaps by taking responsibility for their company's product line.just because there is no "recall" on a tire doesn't mean they are safe.thank you,[xxx],.(tiresize: 255/70r16)information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Prior to leaving my house for a trip to napa valley with my family, i checked the tire pressures on all four tires to ensure the safety of my passengers and myself. I have 6 relatively small-sized adult and a child as passengers. 25 miles into the trip, travelling on the slow lane of interstate 880, i heard a popping sound as if something hit the underside of my vehicle. A few seconds later, i can see smoke from behind through my side mirror and a shudder. Realizing i had a flat tire, i was able to pull over to the side of the freeway. The outer sidewall of the tire completely separated itself from the rest of the tire. An officer of the california highway patrol by the name of officer espiritu assisted us in getting back on the road again.i was not able to get pictures of the damaged tire then because of safety concern but i was able to take some pictures of it as soon as i got home. The aaa tow truck driver/mechanic who helped us even commented that the tire is still in good shape. The time and date of the incident was between 9:15 - 9:45 am of august 25.

All the tires i am reporting went bad while i had small children in the vehicle.all of them went bad as the result of a separation.they all got big bubbles in them where the tread separated from the rest of the tire. I believe that the only reason i didn't have a big accident was because i could feel the vehicle wobbling when i drove, due to the bubble in the tire.i find it very interesting that these tires all came appart at appx. 25000 miles.i had the fourth tire replaced before it could go out on me too. The contact owns a 2008 chevrolet tahoe lt. The vehicle has general grabber uhp tires, line size 275/55/r20. The contact stated that the front passenger tire rim was fractured. The dealer advised that the vehicle was safe to drive. Within two months, the tire exploded while the contact was driving 60 mph. The dealer replaced the tire at the contact's expense. The vehicle was later inspected and the contact was advised that the front driver side tire exhibited extreme tread wear. The tire was replaced at the contact's expense. On a later date while attempting a turn, the contact unexpectantly drove over the curb. Later, he noticed the tire was cracked in the same as the front passenger tire was previously. The rear tires were not replaced. The tire dot number and the vin was not available. The failure mileage was 6,000 and the current was 16,000.
On 7/19/01 i found a bubble on the rear driver side tire. The bubble was approximately 8 long. When the tire was removed from the rim the bubble also extended inside the rim. On7/21/01 i was looking at the other tires and found cracksforming on the side walls on the other three. These cracks are three quarters to one inch in length. I have filed a paper report on two of the original set tires that failed. I went to a tire shop and they set a 3rd of the set was bad so i replaced it. I have been trying to deal with general, ford customer service, and the dealership but there procedure to get something done has been an ordeal that i am still working on from the original blow out. I had my 2 bad tires replaced at at tire shop because they separated, one actually blewout and caused damaged to the vehicle. The 2nd was about to blow out becase it developed a knot and was bumping as i went down the road. When i was having these two reaplaced concern for our safety, the tire shop said the 3rd tire was seperating. I had it reaplaced. This pass satursday while in rout to a wedding the 4th remaining tire of the original set started peeling off and started bumping. I stopped and changed it with the 5th tire of the original set. This is the spare. I also found the brake line had been damaged from the original blow out of the first tire when my wife came home today and told me the brake pedal when to the floor. I have all of these bad tires in my possession and i am sure you would want to examine them before i give them to general. They say they must have them before theywill consider a claim from me for the damage to my vehicle or any of all of the expenses i have incurred from the failure of their set of tires. I think these tires are defective. They could have easily caused me and my family our lives. I know this report does not cover all of the details. I can give all of the details dring whatever investigation that follows. I would appreciate you help on this safety issue. I tried to contact general today but the number i was given is 740-588-4164 and this rings a fax machine. Please have someone come look at these tires as soon as possible.
Consumer writes in regards to vehicle tires *tgwafter several road tests and inspecting the tires, the mechanic confirmed the tires were at that time, in forward tolling motion and the vehicle swayed from side-to-side, followed by a thumping noise. The mechanic stated the tires were defective. The consumer stated the tires would shake when cold and at higher temperatures, there was less thumping. The consumer also stated the tires had waves/lumps in them.
The tire w/traction rating of "b" is inadequate for the weight of the truck. In wet conditions the truck will skid (when approaching a stop sign)when braking. I have contacted nissan (claim no. 2889591) and was told that it is neither general 'sor nissan's responsibilty. I disagreed with nissan and informed them that they are responsible for selecting this tire for the truck.( dot number: tire size: p235 70r15 )

I have noticed over the last three weeks what i believe was tire seperation on my tires so i called to ask if they were having problems with my make and model and was told no. I then drove my truck to the dealership and was informed that my tiers were infact seperating and that i should take them to a general tire store so i did that and it was confirmed by them that my tires are in the proccess of seperation but was told that it is not there problem that it is the dealerships responsibility. The tires are so bad that you can stick your fingernail under the rubber that is starting to come apart. I then drove to yet another dealership and got the same confermation but still no results. I was then left with no choice and had to replace the tires. They told me to hold onto the tires for a possible recall or for your viewing. I have also contacted the sc attorney generals office and they are the folks that told me to contact you. At this point i am out another $1,150.00 for tires that i should not be having to purchase yet, not to mention my safety.( dot number: 0600 tire size: 235/85r16 )

I experienced an abnormal sidewall blow-out on a tire with less then 10,000 miles on it.the blow outcaused damage to the rim and hub of the wheel.i am greatly concerned that i may have the same experience soon with the other four tires.i contacted general tires and they want me to sent the tire back east and wait to get something done.the now tire, rim and hub cap cost me 325.00 out of my own pocket and i am going to have to wait to get it from detroit on special order.i would like the dot to inspect the tire prior to releasing it back to general to determine if a recall should be established.like i stated in the beginning of this section the sidewall blow out was very abnormal.( dot number: tire size: 17 )
Both front and rear passenger side tires easily suffered sidewall cuts by a tree branch; w/ no pro-rata warranty applied to new tires purchased because national tire and battery said sidewall damage is not covered under general's warranty - tires should not split with normal driving at 10 mph and no previous accidents or mishaps affecting the tire - also when pavement is wet back end loses traction for a second and car slides sideways and i'm not sure if it is the tires or the vehicle - but i am concerned these tires could prove dangerous at normal highway speeds.(tiresize: 25565s16)

These tires (general grabber tr, size 235/85r16) came as original equipment on a 2000 ford f250 super duty.this truck is used mainly on paved roads; occasionally on gravel roads. The worst "off road" duty this truck ever sees is a rare trip onto dirt or grass.i am careful about keeping wheels balanced and tires properly inflated and rotated. In the spring of 2003, with about 20,000 miles on the tires, i discovered a grapefruit sized bulge in the inside sidewall of one of them.a field representative from general tire proclaimed that this bulge was due to a "road hazzard."[my first sidewall bulge in 37 years of driving, but i guess it can happen.however, don't let the low milage on the truck fool you.although i drive less now than i used to, with other vehicles i still average over 35,000 miles per year.i have owned a lot of tires.]i was now suspicious of these tires, so in august 2003 (at 22,000 miles) before a 2,000 mile tript which i had to make with the truck, i carefully inspected the tires and double checked the inflation.upon my return home i discovered a lemon sized bulge in the outside sidewall of another one of this set.i then immediatly replaced the tires on the truck with another brand.upon inspection of the removed tires, i discovered that a third tire had a walnut sized bulge in a sidewall.so, in 24,000 miles, three of the original four tires developed sidewall bulges.interestingly, all of the bulges were between the bead and the widest part of the sidewall, not between the widest part of the sidewall and the tread - where you would would expect a tire to be more likely to encounter a "road hazzard."in my opinion, the biggest "road hazzard" i've encountered in this truck are these tires.i am not interested in any "compensation" from this company.i just want to warn other consumers and nhtsa to watch these tires.judging from the other complaints about general grabbers, sidewall failures are a high percentage problem.
On 07/05/00 this vehicle was found to have two large bubbles about the size of softballs on the inside sidewall of both tires. The vehicle which hauls hazmat materials was placed out of service and towed to academy ford where both tires were replaced with like tires of same manufacturer and size. On 07/31/01 this same vehice was placed out of service enrouteand was towed back to main shop for the same type of defect in tire on front of vehicle. This is the third tire of this type to develop the same problem adn we find it hard to believe this is just and isolated incident. We have other vehicles of the same identical type with different manufactured tires, and have never experienced this problem. (dot number: ador 1jctiresize: 235/85r16)

I have had ongoing tire problems since this truck was new. I have had casing separations in four of the six tires installed on the dual wheel truck, both front and rear. I have contacted ford customer service numerous times. I have been to two local dealerships. I have also made numerous calls to general tire customer service and i talked to five separate representatives. All to no avail. One ford dealership told me they were "not in the tire business" -- "have a nice day" -- "good bye". Another ford dealership has been waiting for three weeks for an eamil from "corporate headquarters". I believe that they are hoping i will just give up or crash and burn -- whichever come first. General tire has agreed to give me a small credit toward the purchase of replacement tires or replace them with the same general tire junk that i have now. Neigher of which is satisfactory or fair. Someone is going to be hurt by their failure to respond to this problem or even take the time to question me as to when, where, or how my tire failures have occurred. Your timely response would be greatly appreciated as this is a very widely used tire and i believe is a very dangerous problem to the public. Thank your for your time and consideration. The rubber striped off two tires on the drivers side causing extensive body damage to my vehicle. The dealership refuses to hold any responsibilty for the repairs. I have filed a claim with my insurance company to repair my car. I have notified continental general tire co. Thru their website two days ago and have had no response from them. Ihad the vehicle less than thirty days when the tires stiped the rubber. I was traveling back to my home in ar from a family furneral in ga. The first tire on the front drivers side went about50 miles out of macon, ga. We were able to drive very slowly to a repair shop and have the spare tire put on the car.about an hour to an hour and a half later the rear drive side tire did the same thing.we were fortunate enough to be at an exit rap at talladaga, ga. I was forced at this time to purchase a tire, which does not fit my vehicle because that is all they had at this location. We then drove to annastin, al to a sears store and purchase another tire that was the correct size inorder to make our trip back home to ar.these tires lost the tread as if they were recaps, very much like the tire problems reported with firestone tires.i have not gone to a local dealer for general tires since i was able to find their website to report this problem, but as i stated i have not gotten a reply from them in two days. I purchased this car with these tires on it, the dealership advised us to go to ar tire co. As they were the ones who supplied the tires that are on my car.
