Oil filter housing unit bolted to left side of triton v-10 engine fell off the engine after bolts which held the housing apparently vibrated loose. The failure resulted destruction of both the sending and return oil lines to the oil cooler and also heavy damage to oil cooler after it too also fell after being yanked by the falling oil filter mounting unit. At time of failure there was no indication that there was an oil pressure problem because the instrument gages were still reading full pressure. Engine was saved from damage after driver shut engine off and steered motor home down a two lane road to where it could safely pull off. Note there is an extream fire hazard issue with this large amounts of oil sprayed on the left side engine manifold. Tires. Six firestone steeltex tires and a non-firestone spare tire were replaced due to sever cracking and evidence that tires were showing immenant failure. Tires were only load range d. Vehicle should have load range e. Replaced with non-firestones on all positions. (dot number: vd1l1xe127tiresize: lt22575r16)
Brake lines developed a leak due to excessive corrosion. All lines from the brake master cylinder to each wheel and to the abs unit had to be replaced, including the flexible lines. These tire act as if they are out of balance, a speeds of 65-70mph they will shake to vehicle so bad,it dislogdes my cell phone battery.i have had these tire back to firestone to be rebalanced several times.they say the tire are balanced correctly.this problem occurs after the vehicle has been drivin for a half hour or so.when they are cold their fine.firestone has blamed my driveshaft and cv joints.i have moved the tire around the vehicle and the vibration follows the tires.could these tire be going out of round after they warm up?i was just living with this problem, but now i see that these tire are under investigation by the nhtsa. On 04/28/2000, i was towing my boat and trailer to lake erie on ohio state route 11 north when my rig suddenly began to fishtail extensively in perfect road and whether conditions and at a speed of approximately 50mph.i immediately applied electric trailer brakes to all four trailer wheels which did operate but to no avail. I then tried to hold the brakes on the trailer and also apply acceration to the truck to pull this rig out of the fishtail.within a matter of 5 seconds or less, i was thrown off the right side of the road into the hillside with a blown right rear tire on the truck.having pulled boats and trailers all of my life i couldn't figure out why this rig got away from me so fast, especially at the speed i was going.after everything about firestone tires that came out in the following months, i feel that something definitely happened to this tire to cause the accident.after getting the truck repaired and then checking the consumer report's website about tires, i decided to check out the dot dates of the tires that remained on the truck and found out that all these tires that were installed as original equipment were manufactured in early 1990.as far as i'm concerned, this is fraud and negligence on both firestone's and ford's part since they sold and put outdated tires on this new truck.i emailed a complaint to ford's customer service with the same information that i am providing you, but it was to no avail.at this time i'm looking into possibly filing a suit against both ford and firestone. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at home or work. Thank you. Robert e. Archer, d.d.s. (tiresize: 265/75rx16)( dot number: tire size: 265/75rx16 )

I orderd my truck with 4 wheel abs-the dealer said it was standard equipment-the dealer paperwork from ford says it is standard equipment-when the truck came in the window sticker says it has it on the truck as standard equipment-it does not have 4 wheel abs. This was the third steeltex tire to fail on this vehicle. This vehicle was manufactured overweight. The secondary manufacturer has offered to exchange it for a new motorhome. I have serious reservations that the new unit is safe. (tiresize: 225 75 16e)( dot number: tire size: 225 75 16e )
As we were enroute to disney world with 2 adults and 2 children in the motorhome, we noticed a vibration that grew in intensity as we approached datona beach late in the afternoon.within 5 miles of first noticing the vibration, we pulled off interstate 95 and i looked at all of the tires.as a former factory service rep for ford and a fully certified ase mechanic from many years ago, i scrutinized the tires intensely with my eyes and hands finding nothing abnormal.we decided to press on to daytona beach to find a tire store and have the vibration checked out.within 1 mile of pulling onto the freeway again, the front right tire shredded and damaged the undercarriage and fender paint on the vehicle.we summonsed a service truck and had the spare tire replaced.while in orlando, we ordered a new tire and had it replaced.returning home we stopped at a weigh station to see just how heavy the vehicle was with just the four of us in it and found that we were within 300# of the max gross weight allowed for the front tires.the tire pressures have been maintained closely and the vehicle has been aligned regularly.there was now abnormal wear patterns on the tire.last fall, the front tires were rotated with the inside rear tires to maintain the rotation pattern. Auguts 7, 2001 - traveling on a highway with speed limit of 65mph and the temperature was 101.approximately 25 minutes into my drive i notice vibration in my steering wheel and the vehicle felt like it had a scuttle shake which continued to get worse.i stopped and looked at my front tires and underneath the front end for any obvious defects. Didn't look at the back tires closely becausei assumed it was a front end problem due to the steering wheel vibration. When i got back on the highway the problem was getting worse (shaking harder)so i stopped once again to look at the front end. Ihappened to take a look at the rear tires while standing a distance away from the vehicle.mydriver's side rear tire tread was severly warped.firestone dealer replaced tire immediately. Ifeel that if i had ignored these obvious warning signs and kept on driving,i would have had a blow out at highway speeds. The high temperature was most likely a factorin the tire's failure. The vehicle often times vibrates in the speed range from 10 mph to 70 mph.within the times the vehicle is vibrating in the speed range of 50-70, occasionally the vehicle will jump within the lane, on the order of quarter or halves of a foot.towing generally minimizes the vibration; however now, steering gets more emphasized and sloppy, with a less in control feeling.i have brought the vehicle to a chevrolet dealership and they have done their best to minimize the vibration by making minor/scheduled maintenance adjustments to the vehicle, yet the problem still persists.i have suspected the rear differential, front springs, tires, and suspension, but i am not sure what component or combination of components are the root cause of the problem.

Tires were constantly going flat. Several times i pulled pieces of gravel/rock out to find that was the cause of the leaking.i feel these tires were unreasonably susceptible to punctures . Accident occurred due to firestone steeltex tire blow out.*mrwhile driving one of the vehicle's tires blewout and caused the vehicle and trailer to jack-knife, damaging both vehicles.all four steeltex tires were replaced and during this service the technician indicated that one of the other tires was starting to separate.
First tire failure the truck was only a few months old and had about 4000 miles. I was doing about 60 mph on i75 when the tire blew. I called the ford service number and a service vehicle came and put my spare tire on. The next day i took the tire to the firestone dealer at dadeland in miami. There they said that there was nothing they could do since i had driven on it. My complaint was that no other record was made of the early tire failure. (dot number: 20891urtiresize: lt235/85r1)

My wife and i planned to take two of our grandchildren to the north carolina zoological society in asheboro, n.c..on the morning of july 7 we headed south from central virginia on route 29.we reached lynchburg within an hour and noticed that the ride was getting rougher.we pulled over to the side of the road to check the vehicle.i visually inspected the undercarriage, the suspension system and the wheels and did not see anything out of the ordinary.we were concerned about continuing our trip and decided to turn back and head home again.i drove 35 mph with the emergency blinkers on until we reached a gas station near the intersection of route 29 and 60.the vibration had turned into a steady thumping as i had proceeded to this point. I visually inspected the vehicle again and noticed a tear along the inside side wall of the passenger rear wheel. On closer inspection i noticed that the tear was along the edge of the tread and could be pulled away from the tire.we decided to call aaa and have them change out the tire for us.after arriving home from our attempted trip we decided to replace all four tires with goodyear tires for a total cost of $529.33.the attendant (mackenzie horn) at the goodyear service center, jenkins automotive, 1564 seminole trail, charlottesville, va 22901 (434) 974-6680 confirmed our belief that the tire was indeed defective.

This 16 inch tire blew out while in az on a trip.it was on a 1996 motorhome with a ford chassis.there was 5/16 inches left of tire wear.the tread peeled of just as shown on tv.i have the tire.i have written to firestone only to get a canned reply.i know this is a 16 inch tire and the recall is for 15 inch tires.but i feel that because the same is happening under the same conditions as the 15 inch, it desrerves consideration.this was a motorhome and not a suv either.that would be additional evidence that the tire is the problem and not the car!( dot number: 25582urbd9 tire size: lt225/7516 )
Right rear tire had massive failure while driving on interstate. Moved car to side of road and changed out tire. Prior to failure noticed thumping noise from rear of vehicle that shook vehicle. There were no road hazards struck to cause this incident. There was no accident, injury or loss of life. I suspected something was wrong prior to the failure when the thumping noise became noticable, however i thought the tires might need balancing. Now there are more thumping noises so i am going to have to changeout the the remaining three tires. I tried to contact firestone but the wait time to speak with someone was too long. I still have the tire and would be happy to bring it in for your analysis since i am in the washington dc area. (dot number: v6ttbtatiresize: 245/75r16)
All six original tires developed a lump in them at what appears to be the point that the belts were joined. If i had not discovered this any one of them could have blown out at highway speeds. All six were replaced and one of these has already developed this lump. I have also seen other motorhomes with these tires blow out at highway speeds. There is in my opinion a problem with these tires also. (tiresize: lt22575r16)( dot number: tire size: lt22575r16 )
An employee told me my tires were wearing around 5000 mile on the truck but i ignored his comments. Around 20k miles i developed a vibration and thought it to be an alignment problem. It progressively got worse and i had tires ck'ed at 38900 and was told at toms tires the tires were junk. I contacted my ford dealer and was told the warranty didn't cover tires but to go to firestone to possibly get an adjustment. The firestone rep ck'ed tires and also said they were bad. Their price for the same tire was $380 and $200 less than toms tires price for a similiar tire. I found this to be odd. The following day after firestone ck'ed tires, the article about firestones defective tires came out. I notified my dealer but was informed my tires are not in the recall. I also notified ford today.( dot number: tire size: lt26575r16 )
The left rear tire blew out an approx. 3inch section of the side wall on the out side of the tire, a section stayed on the rim and the inside of the tire was intact. There was no evidence of tread separation on the tread. The loca firestone dealer inspected the tire and could find no reason for the failure. They replaced the tire with the same type for a prorated price of$64.78. The tires were inspected by me before i left for yosemite national park and inflation and condition appeared ok. The failure occured aprox. 35 miles into the trip at about 9:30 am pdt and the temperature wasapprox. 60 to 70 degrees. The failure occured on business is80, westbound , inside lane.the pickup was empty at the time of failure, if i would have been pulling my fifth wheel trailer with a gross combined vehicle weight og 18560lbs, the results could have been a serious accident as i was in rush traffic and on the inside lane of a six lane freeway. I was able to control the truck and move safely to the outside shoulder to change the tire. I am reluctant to use my trailer with these tires as i do not want my wife because of inacaction by firestone and ford to replace these alledged defective tires. I urge your agengy to initiate an immediate recall of these tires if action is not taken within the next 30 days, i will be contacting my congressional representatives for action on this serior problem. Thank you and i added to the fatality list. (dot number: do 8062tiresize: lt26575r16)

I have had two blowouts of firestone steeltex tires, p235/75r16 on a 1998 ford econonline with a winnebago rv coach mounted on the chassis.under both circumstances, the tires were properly inflated (at 80 psi per the manufacture instructions), and in both situations the pressure was checked within hours of the failure.the vehicle has been weighed on certified scales and does not exceed tire recommended load capacities.in both situations, the tire tread sepearated from the inner core.the first tire had approximately 20,000 miles on it when it went, and the most recent one had 22,000 miles on it.there was plenty of tread life left and there were no visible signs of damage from road hazards prior to the failures.

Normal driving less than 10 miles. The failures are many and often.transmission failures every few thousand miles. Always leaks trans flds all overstreets and driveways. Service engine light on. Chevrolet dealer erased failure and diagnostic codes to gouge consumer, many times. Parking brake cable snapped in two on driveway. Abs failures at low speeds and engine klacks loudwhen starting. I am original owner of a defective 2001 chevrolet silverado.the last time gmpp with gm dealer repair the underwarranty repairs took 6 weeksthere are only 26.000 miles on this truck. Obviously this is a defect in its design and application. (see ptior complaints)tires flew off, altering of service contracts on and on.

Tire delaminated while traveling with family on i-10, 20 minutes from home. I filed a incident report with firestone and sent them the tire as they requested. When tire delaminated, it damaged the rear quarter panel of my van along with damaging exhaust and fuel filler tube. Firestone responded to my incident report claiming no fault and that the failure was due to an underinflated tire. I have evidence and can prove under oath that this tire has never been underinflated, since i check the tire pressure of all the vehicles tires at minimum every 60 days. I have photographs of the tire after it failed along with pieces of its tread. The tire had only 36,220 miles on it and was visually inspected just a few weeks prior to it's failure. The tire had no visual signs of adverse treadwear; regular alignments and wheel balancing were part of my preventative routine maintenance. (dot number: vd1l1xd308tiresize: 225/75/r16)

Remaining tread depth was 11/32.
The tire blewout on the freeway. Upon inspection it appeared to be no reason for the blowout other than tire failure. The sidewall at the tread line was completely seperated all the way around on the outside of the tire. I have pictures of the tire. Firestone would only honor the original warranty on this one tire. It was replaced at a prorated price with the same model.( dot number: vnw8 1xl tire size: lt26575r16 )
Even though i purchased the vehicle used, it only had 245 miles on it at the time & was purchased from a gm dealer. Of the 4 original tires on the ground, i've had to replace two because of irregular wear & the inability to balance or eliminate vibrations from the tires. Such wear patterns are usually indicative of separated or broken belts. When i complained to the dealer they offered no adjustment. Now the last two of the original 4 tires that came with the vehicle are exhibiting the same types of wear patterns. One of the failed tires was turned into the dealer a year or so ago when i purchased a new tire. I'm still using one of the failed tires as a spare, so i have 3 of the original 4 tires. On sunday morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. 2miles west of santa rosa, new mexico the right rear tire blew out.we were towing a 30 foot 5th wheel recreational vechicle at about 70 mph.due to where this happened, i had to leave the roadway to keep from being run over by 18 wheelers running 75+ mph. Since i was in the left lane, i had to go in the center median.this area was extremely sloped and we were barely able to clear the roadway with the righ side of truck and trailer.new mexico state highway patrol was contacted but never showed up.in order to continue to a location to find a replacement tire. We hap to buy a used tire for a spare.in santa fe, nm we located a firestone dealer.he replaced both rear tires with the same model tire but a different tread design.he did not mention the there being a problem with these tires.after returning home and getting more details and the concern with safety, we bought replace tires from another manufactor.i feel firestone should have ntified me of the possible problem before the incident. The following is the text of a letter that i sent to firestone on 8-10-2000. All that they did was send me form letter that didn't even apply to my tire. Can you assist in obtaining compensation?: in 1997, i purchased a new 1997 ford f-250 extended cab lwb diesel truck (from valley ford in oneonta, al). It came equipped with firestone "steeltex radial a/t lt 235 85 r16 m/s" tires.i was very careful to maintain the proper tire pressure and stay well under the rated carrying capacity at all times for safety reasons. On 3-24-2000, approximately 40 miles after i had (coincidentally, i suppose) checked for the proper pressures and carefully inspected all the tires, while loaded at over 1 ton less than the bed carrying capacity, travelling at about 50 mph after dark in a mostly rural area, the left rear tire literally exploded. I nearly lost control, but i managed to slow down and pull onto a concrete drive and change the tire. The wheel hub was seriously abraded/scratched. There was very little left of the tire. I have no knowledge ofhitting anything after the above described tire inspection.even though i had at least 40% tread left on all tires, this scared me so much that i went and bought a new set of four tires the very next day.i had not given it any more thought until the recent publicity over failures of firestone radial tires coming as original equipment on ford trucks and suvs during this period. So, in my opinion, a very carefully maintained tire (as mine was), well "underloaded"inspected immediately prior to the incident, properly inflated, worn only 60%, and subjected to no "injury"should not have failed, especially in such a dramatic/dangerous fashion, and therefore must have been defective when sold.i am asking for compensation for at least part of the cost of my new set of tires ($767.99ntbhoover, al).r craig bradley 8-10-2000 (tiresize: 235 85 r16)( dot number: tire size: 235 85 r16 )

Right front tire found with 1/2 inch vertical cut midway up sidewall. No evidence of road hazzard or other damage. New vehicle only 6 days old, driven only 350 some miles, while on local road at speed limit (30) began to vibrate, unable to control causing me to swerve into oncoming lane then onto shoulder. When vehicle stopped it was found both front and rear drivers side tire had beads had separated. Towed to firestone dealer who upon checking found passenger side tires only at 40lbs, gmc door sticker states 55lb front, 80lb rear. Dealer admits to inflating only to 40-45lbs. While driving, one of the six tires on the motor home blew out.the rear inside tire blew out.the consumer was informed by firestone to send them the tire to see if it was defective.firestone responded and informed the consumer the tire was under inflated which caused the blow out. In late 2002 another rear inside tire blew out. The consumer replaced the other 4 tires for safety precautions.
While driving on i-15 north bound south of las vegas at app. 9:30 pm i hit some thing that was on the road that caused both tires on the passenger side of the car to blow out. I do not know what the object was. I steered off the road and created considerable damage to the under carriage of the vehicle. I notifed my issurance agent leon heaton, farmers insurance 702-363-0026. They created claim # 78120742. I had the car towed to firestone on rancho blvd in las vegas, and had the car repaired at friendly ford of las vegas 702-877-7600. (dot number: unktiresize: lt26575r16)
Treads separated and wrapped around front axle, causing the wheel to lock up.
The tires blew the thread off and caused severe body damage and vehicle had to be towed in to town.firestone was contacted and i was advised to send the tires to bfts 1515 elm hill pkie #405 nashville tn37210-3615 i had to pay to send them to them as thelocal firestone dealer was unable to help due to the body damage.i elected not to do this and purchased michelins to replace the 6 tires.i turned the claim into my insurance company and they fixed the body damage.i feel firestone should be held accountable as the vehicle only had 14,000 miles and was only about 1 and a half years old.just wanted to let you know its not only the wilderness tires that blow apart.i lost thread on both rear right side tires.thank you. There were 4 separate occasions of blowouts all in the rear tires.luckily the rear contains dual axle, so we able to maneuver safely off the road.each tire blowout was termed tread separation.the first two were covered by a tire road hazard contract, but upon the thrid and fourth blowout in a 3 month period, i was directed to go directly to firestone.they did replace the blown tires with the same new tire, but there is obviously a problem with the mfg. Of the tire, and i have since replaced all of the tires with michelin, since my wife and children would not ride in the rv until i did so.i have attempted to contact firestone since the beginning of august, and have only received form letters, emails if any response at all.i have contacted ford, and they have indicated that firestone would have to address this.i am sending the body of a letter under separate email for more information. At least one of the front tires started making a rapid, vibrating, slapping noise that was very unusual, and much faster than the road joints.i was going 70 mph when the noise started.my wife and i and two kids were scared.we pulled over and i looked at all the tires.no obvious defects from a visual inspection.we resumed, and the noise resumed at 70.we drove at about 50 on the rest of the trip, and have been afraid to take the suburban on the highway since.i read in the paper today that there is a national investigation of the steeltex r4s for defects.i contacted firestone twice previously about these tires.the first time, i got a non-responsive generic response on the wilderness recall.the second time, i got no response.i am afraid to drive the tires.how should i proceed with firestone or chevrolet to get these tires replaced with safe tires.i know there is something wrong with my steeltex r4s tires.please help.thanks.jean r. The center offered to adjust for mileage and replace the tire. The center indicated one of their tech's would inspect the tire then destroy it or send it to their reseach people for further anaylsis.the owner elected not to give them the tire at that time until the nhtsa was contacted in case they wanted to see the tire themselves. The owners also have pictures of the tire if the nhtsa wants to see them in lieu of physically inspecting the tire.the owners would like to know what if anything the nhtsa would like to do so that the tire can be returned to firestone for a replacement. Tire was kept by simpsonville chevy due to their reimbursement claim, against my request.spoke to firestone dealer today who told me tires have no problems, and if i want tires replaced i pay, they are not resonsible.have also rec'd run around from chevrolet, brook lindhart offered reassurance but now i'm not sure, willing to help you in anyway possible including providing accounts by phone tape or testimony.i am tired of being jerked around for something that involves my the safety of my family.no one to date will give me any straight answers.i do also have saved copies of the emails from chevrolet. Inside dual on motorhome blow-out with no warning.had driven from phoenix to indiana and was returning home. Occured just south of hannibal,mo on smooth four lane road, temperature approx 85 degrees, with no significant change in load.air pressure was checked in a:m prior to leaving sprinfield, il. Insurance adjuster for progressive insurance met me in hannibal to survey damage;he has photos of tire. Damage was limited to severed/crimped tailpipe and structural damage to storage compartment.firestone dealer in hannibal would not adjust the tire and sent me to quincy,il dealer. This dealer would not adjust tire either.insurance adjuster made statement to me that damage to tire was consistant with what he had seen on tires being recalled by firestone. In both incidents, the tires were inflated to 80 psi as recommended by manufacturer.tires were mounted on the inside rear of the vehicle and vehicle is equipped with rear dual tire configuration.out side temp was around 85 degees fahrenheit in both incidents.tires were sent to firestone for evaluation.initially firestone claimed that i (consumer) had operated tires improperly and therefor was the cause of the blowouts.eventually, after several phone calls and letters, they did reimburse me for my out of pocket expenses.i have digital pictures of both tires that failed and will be happy to provide you with these upon request.( dot number: vd1l1xd287 tire size: lt22575r16 )
The tire failure was a blowout.the whole sidewall shredded.firestone said it was a road hazard even though we did not hit anything.ford would not replace because they don't cover tires.the fuel gauge was replaced twice by the dealer.the first time, the gauge read 1/4 tank left and it was dry.the second time the gauge read 1/4 tank and it was more than 1/2 full.the front stablizer assembly was popping so hard you could hear and feel it.the dealer replaced it.it seems to be popping again but i haven't taken it back in yet.i'm getting tired of taking it in.the rear side window motor was dying so i had it repaired.during repair, they noticed the glued piece that the motor attached to was coming off and had to replace the entire window.when does the lemon clause come into effect???( dot number: 008102 tire size: lt26575r16 )
On a camping trip i awoke on the morning of 9/30/00 to find the right front tire flat.i installed the spare and when i got home secured replacement goodyear tires and commenced to install them.prior to demounting the right front i inflated it to determine where the air was escaping.it appeared to be escaping in an area between the tread pattern.when i demounted the tire i inspected the interior and could see no evidence of a penetration wound and could find no type of foreign object.in my two years working at a tire installation facility (sears) i never encountered a failure of this nature.needless to say with the events of the past several months at firestone and my subsequent tire failure my confidence in the firestone tire company has been seriously eroded.firestone is now recalling some sixteen inch tires but as yet have not included the 235/85 steeltex.i was curious to know if any failures of my size tire have been brought to your attention. Thank you for your time.sincerelyrichard neitzel.( dot number: vnor1ww365 tire size: 235/85r16 )

Right rear tire separated at side seam causing the tire to deflate and made it hard to control the rv. We first noticed that the right rear tire had a crater like crack betweenone tread. The crack was about 3" long. We then inspected the rest of the tire. We found smaller cracks all around the tire and inbetween other treads. We inspected the other tires and found that all the tires had small cracks inbetween the treads, they were not as big as the left rear, but they were all around the tires. The cracks in the other 3 tires randged from about 1/8" to 1/2" in length. We contacted our ford dealer and they said they could not do anything because this was not on the recall list. We then contacted a firestone dealer in our area and brought the truck in for inspection. They said the tires showed that there was a problem. They replaced all four tires with the same tires. We exspessed our concerns about replacing the tires with the same ones. They said that they have not had any reports of problems with this tire type. We would like to be notified if there will be a recall on this tire. I do not feel that we are driving on a safe tires with all these problems being reported with firestone. We have already had problems with this perticular tire brand and now have replaced them with the exact same brand. If i had an extra $700 to $800 to spend i would not have replaced them with this brand. The firestone dealer said that there has never been a problem with this tire type and brand and that there will never be. Being replace for free seemed to be an okay deal at the time, but now i am questioning that decision. If you can help at all, i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, brian barto and family. (dot number: ?tiresize: 265/75/16)
Two separate incidents of tire failure.firestone replacing tires at no cost for defect.on first incident had complete tread separation.on second incident customer stopped vehicle and changed tire.tire was deformed on tread surface as if delamination or separation were about to occur.tire was still on rim when customer turned vehicle in.it was still holding 70 lbs. After shipping tire and estimates and photos of the damages as required by firestone, my claim was denied , their reason was: failure due to under inflation. Because we travel a lot with our fifth wheel camper, i regularly checkand keep my tires inflated at the manufacture's recommed (75lbs) of air pressure.firestone has the tire in question and will send it back to me at my additional expense. I experienced two tire blowouts within 200 miles of each other with firestone steeltex tires.the tire size is lt225/75r16, load range e.each tire had over 3/8's of an inch of tread left.the mileage on the tires was approximately 29,500.both blowouts were the inner tire of a dual rear set.the vehicle involved is a 1998 dutchmen class c motorhome on a ford super duty van chassis.the first blowout was very explosive and violent.the explosion lifted the rear of the motorhome and caused a moment of uncontrollable sliding.the blowout occurred at about 75 mph.it was a complete tread separation.this blowout also damaged the exhaust system and undercarriage of the vehicle.on the return trip home, about 200 miles later, the other inside rear tire blew.this blowout was much tamer. It was a sidewall split and the tread remained attached.this blowout occurred at 65 mph.no additional damage to the motorhome occurred and manuverability of the vehicle was not compromised.the air pressure at the beginning of the trip was checked - 65 front, 75 rear.before returning for home, the pressure was checked again - 65 front, 75 rear.
On sunday, may 14, 2000, i was traveling south on interstate 95 in my 1996 chevrolet suburban. Approximately midway through connecticut the right rear tire came apart causing damage to wheel, brake lines, heater hoses and heater core for rear heater. I did not hit anything nor did i notice any problems prior to this incident. These tires were purchased new in january 2000 with 39441 miles on the odometer. The approximate milage when the incident occured was 46500. I was told by firestone's legal office that the reason was my driving for an unknown period of time with low tire pressure. I checked the tire pressure prior to leaving a relatives house that morning as well as visually checking them at lunch. The incident occured at approx. 2:00pm. I also religiously check the tire pressure weekly. At no time did i find a tire low.( dot number: tire size: lt245/75r1 )

The tire split from bead to tread when i ran over a pvc pipe at less than 1/2mph.the pipe was not broken so there were no sharp edges and the impact did not break the pipe.when i contacted the local dealer he refused to replace the tire saying it was a road hazard.i asked for a number to call and was refered to an office in nashvilletn.i called and talked to a person who identified himself as rock.i told him what happened and he refused to authorize the replacement of the tire saying it was a road hazard.i told him that these were off road tires that should not have so easily ruptured.he told me that they had to make the sidewalls thin because people like me wanted their truck to ride smooth and the vehicle manufacturers made them build them that way.i told him that i did not believe that.he told me that he did not care what i thought as i was not one of their customers but was just using their product.i then hung up but called a customer relations number listed on the internet.i told the lady that took my call what "rock" had said and she called the local dealer and authorized the replacement of the tire.i am still concerned about this model tire. On the three separate occasions, i felt vibrations that seemed like a loose wheel and immediately stopped my vehicle. On one occasion, the left rear tire tread separated from the steel and was half gone around the tire. On the two other occasions, i could feel the same vibration and when stopping, i could see the tread separation from the steel belt in the form of large bumps completely around the tires. I attribute my safely stopping to 35 years of trained professional driving and always being conscientious of any unusual vehicle sounds and actions. Each time the tires were replaced by the same firestone dealer. A prorated charge was made on each tire and the dealer denied any manufacturing problems with the tires and my tires were just flukes.i took the fourth tire off the vehicle and placed it inside as a spare tire with 26,000 miles on it, fearing it would too separate.had these incidents occurred when either my wife or daughters had been driving the suburban, i believe that their lives could have been endangered. If you wish examine the fourth original tire or any of the replacement tires, feel free to contact me.i believe that these 16-inch tires, due to my experience, are just as likely to fail as the 15-inch tires.( dot number: sp872kr03l tire size: lt24575r16 )

Complete tread separation, much like described on ford explorer incidents.in our case (luckily) i could maintain vehicle control, since the tire did not blow out.i suspect firestone has quality problems on tires other than the explorer size.the incident could have been much more serious if the tire had blown.note that the while the basic chassis is a chevrolet (express van), it was modified to a motor home by home & park motorhomes, 100 shirley ave., kitchener, ontario, canada n2b 2e1 tel. 519-745-1169.while on a '98 chevrolet chassis, the motorhome is described as a '99 roadtrek 200.if you can provide information on how to determine "dot" identification, i will be happy to try to get you that info.note that the failed tire was traded in on a new tire at dorsey tire & trailer, po box 1157, brunswick, ga 31521, tel. 912-261-9947, so may have been discarded.i assume the other 4 tires would have the same dot info.dorsey's paperwork listed "dot off/brand" as sp872kd120 and "dot on/brand" as v611b1c2700.perhaps this is the data you need. Also, there were a number of different numbers molded into the outer wall of the tire:e.g. 120/116r & tpc spec 2012ms.i found your format for the "failed component/part information" a tad confusing - suggest 2 sets of boxes: one for description, location etc. And another for crash, fire etc.( dot number: tire size: lt245/75r1 )

Saturday, 30 september, my wife and i began a trip, tucson to yuma, in a newly acquired '96 suburban 2500. Earlier that morning i had been reading some of the news that had been posted on the internet and had come across another in the never ending stories of the woes of firestone (tires). The (bad) news had spilled over from the ford applications to reference firestone's steeltex r4s and at model tires... That come as standard equipment on, of all things, the chevrolet suburban! i walked out to the garage and looked at the tires that were installed on the "new" '96 and found that the vehicle had like now r4s types installed on all four corners! "nah, it can't be"i said to myself. I had read further, on the internet, the response of firestone to the new allegations was firestone believed that the safety board/gurus were only beginning their investigation and that there was no indication that any real problems were associated with the r4s and at model tires. With renewed confidence in firestone (reinforced by their published statement) we started our trip to yuma. Seventeen (17) miles into the trip, travelling at 75 mph (which is legal speed limit in this neck of the woods), things got real exciting. The driver's side rear started to "thump"the tire came apart, and control became "dicey". We were in the leftmost lane of the interstate with automobiles to our right side and behind us. I got the suburban to slow enough, without using brakes, to enter the median safely and review "the damage". A highway patrolman (state trooper) pulled in along side to see if we were ok and offer some assistance. He seemed to think that we were lucky not to have really taken a tumble or rolled the vehicle. An average driver would have lost it. We returned to tucson and immediately replaced all five (5) firestone tires. (dot number: v611b1a378tiresize: lt24575r16)

The passenger side inside rear dual tire on our 29 foot rv suffered total thread separation at 60 mph. This happened just after i detected a vibration that felt like an unbalanced wheel. I stopped the vehicle and inspected all 6 tires. There was no sign of a problem. I even touched each tire to see if one was a different temperature than the others. All seamed well, so i proceeded onto the highway to continue my trip. Approximately 2 or 3 miles later, a loud bang occurred and i saw tire material exiting the vehicle on the passenger side. After stopping once again, it was obvious that the threads had left on of the tires. These tires were impeccable maintained. They were rotated at the prescribed interval, and i checked the pressures just before the trip (approx. 30 miles before the incident). I was traveling florida sr520, a smoothly paved highway. It was a cool day and the tires were slightly warm to the touch. While firestone tires was at a loss to explain the failure, they insist that the tires are safe and, because they are not on the recall list, they will not replace the remaining tires. I can only imagine what would have happened had the detected tire been on of the front tire given the gvwr of an rv. Given similar problems with other firestone tires, i fear for the safety of my family when traveling on the remaining tires. I feel the nhtsb should investigate the safety of these tires. There are many vehicles on the road with these tires. Roiling motor homes will cause a lot more havoc on the roads than have the many suvs that crashed due to faulty firestone tires. Failure on this vehicle has not yet occured. Ford has installed these tires on a great number of their 2000 model f-350 chassis that are then delivered for ambulance manufacture. I know this to be a fact. I own three 2000 model f350 ambulances and all of them have these tires. My crews and i are afraid to rely on these tires. My company routinely transports patients from our rural area to higher level medical facilities, most times over one hundred miles , and at speeds of 70 to 90 miles an hour under emergency conditions. Please give us help with this problem. I am asking you to convince ford and firestone to recall these tires where applied to emergency vehicles. The use of these tires in a low speed application transporting freight may be relatively safe, but that is questionable. I have written numerous congressmen and senators as well as my state governor with limited reaction. Please make this a priority. Does any government agency regulate in any form and are their specific requirements for the type, size, tread , load range for tires used on ambulances? are tires of various manufacture and tread design allowed on the same emergency vehicle if of the size ? please advise me of any regulations reguarding ambulances that you have. While driving south on i-81 on the 4th of july weekend, with my wife and child, we were near blacksburg, va.we were in a construction zone and were drive approximately 60 mph.our left front tire began to shake, so we pulled to the side of the highway.a large portion of the side wall on the tire had been blown out.i believe it was lucky for us that we were in a construction zone at the time and not traveling at a higher rate of speed.we do not have photos or the tire, but the man at the firestone store said he'd never seen anything like it before. While driving home in my motor home i heard a loud noise and banging under motor home. The noise and banging continued until i was safely able to pull over to the right side of highway/freeway and stop. I noted tire had peeled and caused damage under motor home as well as to the body of motor home on the driver's side. The blow out occurred on july 20, 2002, around 4:00pm. Allow me to mention that i almost had an accident on march 14, 2002, when the first firestone tire blow out happened. I did nothing except call road service to remove the damaged tire and add the spare. Because it was the second incident involving a firestone tire, i called firestone tires and service monday morning. After explaining the july 20, 2002 incident, i was given the telephone number of the claims department in nashville, tennessee (800-356-4644) and spoke to a mr. Shawn green who referred me to a.
While driving the consumer's vehicle had two separate tire blowouts.the rear dual tires blew out and shredded into pieces.the consumer wanted to know how does one shut off the engine while driving at any speed without having to put the vehicle in park first? the consumer stated doesn't a key less ignition car with push button start and stop for the engine require the transmission to be in park for the push button to be able to turn the engine off. The tire failed by loosing its steel belt while driving on the freeway at about 65mph.this tire had about 20kmiles on it & had about 1/3 of its tread left.it did not blow out but damaged the wheel well.the tire was properly inflated for the load and was just checked that morning.( dot number: vnor 1wt 3 tire size: 85r16 )
In early may 2000, the left front tire blew out going 65mph on the highway. I was able to keep control of the vehicle and pull into the breakdown lane to replace it. The tire was a firestone steeltex at tire which was original equipment on my chen ck1500 with approx 60,000 miles. There is still adequate tread on the tires. It looks like a sidewall blowout. We purchased this vehicle used in june 2000 and it now has 30k miles on it.the previous owner has informed us that he had a right front tire delaminate at 20k miles that caused him to run off the road into a ditch.firestone would not acknowledge a problem at that time and the owner had to purchase a new tire.we have e mailed our concern and information to firestone at [email protected] and also faxed it to 800-760-7859.we have not heard any response from firestone.the local dealers and the firestone hotline will notd listen to us.i am quite concerned about driving the vehicle now that we know that one of the tires has delaminated.please help us and also use this information for your data base of defective tires.thanksjoe nichols. While drivinginterstate rt.80 in nabraska this july ; at about 70 mph i, i experianced anear fatal blowout of my left rear inner tire. It also damaged the outter tire as well.i was able to get the motor home under control, and get to an exit. We had to wait 5 hrs. To get it repaired. We got home ok. The very next time we where go out , as soon as i got up to highway speed i felt a pulling to the right and a very bad vibritions. I called for roadside assistance because i could not change the tire . After the spare was put i drove to the ford dealership i had purchased the truck from , i was told that the tire was not waranteed by ford but by firestone , i then contacted firestone to be told that i must have run something over or hit a curb and that they would not warantee the tire , or the damage done to my rim ,front end and the dent caused by the explosion . I was driving on the 405 in los angeles at 65 mph last thursday night at 10 pm.my left rear tire suddenly began to come apart as if the skin was coming off of it.i did not crash but was able to pull over safely onto an exit.the tire appears to be shredding like the ones i have seen on television and in the newspaper, event though it is a different firestone tire.i kept the tire and called firestone, and they said to bring it in.i drive 2 hours a day to work and i can't necessarily afford to replace all four, which i need to now do.i am also very angry because i am so careful to keep my car in working order on the los angeles freeway, which you absolutely can not pull over on safely, and it was a dangerous situation for alot of people when it happened.and i had to change my tire after a 13 hour workday.could you please let me know if i have any recourse in this situation. I purchased this vehicle as a new demo with 3210 miles. In feb 1995 with only 8000 miles on this vehicle while traveling at 65+ miles per hour on the fwy the left rear tire exploded ( tread separation) . Almost causing accident and roll over!( no accident or injuries occured). When i pulled to the side of fwy the left rear tire was completely ripped to shreds. I changed the tire installing the spare. I took failed tire to local firestone tire dealer ( kennedy firestone) for warranty adjustment. They said i must have hit something on the fwy. I explained i never hit anything the tire just blew apart at high speed with no waring. They did not adjust tire for warranty what so ever @ 8000mile. We were traveling hwy 40 at about 60 mph around 2:00 p.m. When our right rear tire exploded.as the tire tread was peeling off, i tried to gain control of my truck/camper to avoid going off the shoulder or a head-on crash.the blowout caused about $2000.00 in damages beside complete tire replacement.i made a claim through farmers insurance agency and the damage has been documented.additionally, i still have the damaged tire and rim. While traveling less than 5 mph in a "rolling backup"the right rear tire on our suburban literally exploded.i pulled off the side of the road immediately, and found a very large hole in the sidewall of the tire.there were no foreign objects in the road, and no indication of any kind of puncture to the tire.the sidewall of the tire blew outward, and left a hole approximately 4" wide by 7 inches long.the vehicle was less than two months old, and had approxmately 1200 miles on it.i had the vehicle in for its first oil change 3 days earlier, and among other things had the tire pressure checked.i contacted a local firestone dealer about replacing the tire, and was told that they could not replace the tire with an exact match, since that particular line of tires (steeltex at) was a tire made exclusively for gm trucks as original equipment.i contacted the gm dealer (gilchrist chevrolet in tacoma wa) and they replaced the tire at no charge.with the recent revelations about firestone tire defects, i am concerned about the firestone tires on my suburban.the "steeltex at" series has not been mentioned in any of the news reports, but i know of one other person who has had similar problems with the firestone steeltex tires on his gm truck.( dot number: tire size: p265r16 )
This tire was making a noise and pulling to the right while driving on july 20, 2002.i went to get a front end alignment due to the pulling, and was told my alignment was okay, but the problem was my right front tire, that the tread was separating inside.as a result i replaced all four firestone tires with goodyear tires.a friend had a slightly smaller firestone steeltex tire actually separate this summer while on a trip.i have kept the tire from my suburban and it is available for inspection.

My pickup had a recall (#01021) to change the recommended air pressure .the pressure went from 55psi in the front and 80 psi in the rear to 35 psi on all tires.i contacted firestone and they told me this pressure was unsafe and those tires should have no less than 58psi.the new sticker makes no mention of increasing the air pressure if a load is being carried.the rgvw for that truck is 6084 lbs, and the tires are each rated to carry 3042 lbs at 80 psi.a lower air pressure drastically reduces the load bearing capability of the tire, which is not accounted for by gmc.my dealer agrees that the pressure is to low and has recommended i remove the tag and use the previous recommended pressure.i and the dealer have contacted gmc and can get no answer on why they changed the pressure and whether it is safe.i am concerned that other owners will not realize there is a possible safety concern with operating these tires at such a low psi.(tiresize: lt245/75)

Purchased 4 replacement tires for gmc suburban on december 1999 - firestone steeltex r4s (outline white letter). All made in canada. Lots: 30359 ex bm14480-3. At 65 mph the truck shimmied terribly. I returned the vehicle on 5 occasions; for wheel balancing and replacement tires, the last time being 9/27/00. The problem persists. Through many years of experience, i am certain there is a tire problem, rather than vehicle. (i plan to verify with front end alignment, but i believe the problem to be rear tires.) through out the five (5) return trips to the dealer, the 2 rear tires were replace with moderate improvements in the vibration (similar to a tread separation which i have experienced before). I am the owner of a 2000 ford excursion that is 11 months old with 20,700 miles. I have just dropped my truck off yesterday for routine service where i purchased it (gladstone ford, londerry, new hampshire). I have a complaint regarding the firestone steeltek r4s tires that came as standard equipment on my ford excursion. My tires are so worn that the service manager at the dealership said that i probably will not get the winter out of them. I have also complained to him that when we drive at highway speeds that the whole truck starts to shake. This is the second time that we complained to the service department that the shake is getting worse. I am also concerned because we heard on the television on friday evening 09/29/00 that the nhtsa is investigating these tires for possible defects. Is the shaking a sign of the tread coming apart? i am very concerned that the winter is fast approaching, and my wife, who is the primary driver, depends on this vehicle to drive our four children around for various activities. I rotate the tires at 5000 mile intervals and keep the air pressure at the recommended specifications as required by the ford motor co. I am a former mechanic and always maintain my vehicles in top condition. This truck has never been used in an off-road environment. I am surprised that these tires are wearing down so quickly. I would like information on what i am to do, as the dealer says that i must contact firestone. At the dealership we tried to look up the expected mileage that i am to get out of these tires, but we could not find this information anywhere. I am very surprised that ford selected these tires if they are only to get 20,000 miles of wear. I spent over $43,000 for this truck, and i expect to get better wearing tires than the steeltek r4s.( dot number: )

Tire blew out while traveling 55 mph. The damage to the tire was right where the tread and sidewall meet. When i took the tire to a firestone dealer i was told that it appeared to be a "zipper problem". After the firestone warranty dept. Was called i was then told that they couldn't tell why the tire had failed because i had obviously driven on it while it was flat. I informed them that it is hard to come to a complete stop from 55 mph., and that i had to drive aprx. A tenth of a mile to where i could safely pull off of the road. I was offered a replacement tire at either at 1/2 off or at dealer's cost i don't remember. The replacement also has the "vd" designation.( dot number: vd11b1c tire size: lt24575r16 )

On 7-28-02 i was driving westbound with my 26' fifth-wheel trailer on u.s.90 east of syracuse, n.y. When i felt a slight shimmy in my steering.the shimmy soon became a severe wobbling so i slowed down andpulled off the highway at the first exit i came to in syracuse.on examining the tire i saw that the steel core had separated from the tire. I put on my spare tire and the next day continued by trip.on 8-7-02 i was northbound on north dakota 281 south of jamestown when i felt another shimmy in the truck near highway 34.this time i discovered that the steel core of the left rear tire had separated the same as the first.in the first instance i contactedlocal ford and firestone dealerships and was told by both that these tires are no longer warranted and there was nothing they could do to replace them.

Noticed 2 seperate cracks or splits on the front left tire of my vehicle. The cracks are on the sidewall of the tire about 1/2 inch each.they are seperate and about a 1 inch space betwween them. But a very fine line or crack can be seen conecting the two from one end to the other.i've taken the vehicle to the firestone dealer at bustleton and street rd. In feasterville,pa 19053 iwas told my tires were not on the recall list, i mentioned that these tires were on the news for blow outs and tire seperation.the dealer then said if the cracks get worse to bring them back and he would reinpspect them but for now it looked minor.also i pointed out that very small cracks surrounding the diameter of the tires below the tread on the side wall could be seen on all the tires. The dealer said it looked like dry-rot, i then commented that the tires were new with vehicle and purchased 11-98 and only had 11,700 miles on them. The dealer said to just keep an eye on them and if it worsens to come back.after that i took the vehicle to john kennedy ford where the vehicle was purchased from and told them about the tires. I was told they were not on the recall list and there was nothing they could do and they reccommened to take them to the tire manufacter for inspection. On sat. (08/10/02) my family and i decided to take a leisurely drive into the hill country just outside of austin, texas.i was driving my 2000 ford excursion on hwy 71, westward at an approx speed of 65 when the front right tire completely separated from its tread.this occurred unexpectedy for there was no debris on the road and no object was hit or struck.the seperated tread tumbled over and over in the wheel well area causing extensive damage to vehicle. I narrowly escaped hitting oncoming traffic and managed to limp the vehicle over to the shoulder.the tire remained inflated - no blow out, tread simply came apart!after recovering tread from roadway, the tire was changed with spare and further limped back to austin to original dealership.dealer service manger reviewed damage as well as drew my attention to opposite front left tire which appeared to have a "bubble" on its tread.the excursion, under factory warranty and the firestone steeltex a/t lt 265/75r16 tiresoriginal tires purchased with vehicle - i assumed ford would pay to replace tires and fix damage to vehicle.i am not pleased to report ford is pointing finger at firestone and informs me any damage claims must be directed to firestone hq.i filed incident report #818333 with firestone and was required to ship both tire & tread to their hq.after only 1/2 day investigation - firestone mailed form letter in return stateing "..tire failure did not result from defect in either materials or workmanship".but rather "insufficient air pressure". This is not true.i am meticulous in the care and maintence to this vehicle including its tires.pressure was checked just prior to our outing that same day.i would never put my family at risk due to negligence on my part.its sad to see neither firestone nor ford take any responsiblity for these defective tires.

Experienced two tire blowouts resulting in damage to undercarriage and significant risk of fire explosion due to location of main lp supply lines.rv tires had less than 10,000 miles with excellent tread and proper inflation per manufacturer specs.approximately 130 miles into trip, right inside rear tire lost complete tread but not air pressure.when changing tire, noticed damage to undercarriage and exposedlp lines and electrical wires that were mounted in the wheel wells. These lines were covered with a thin piece of sheet metal that the tire quickly destroyed.after first repair, experienced a blowout of the left rear inside tire with complete air loss.there was damage to the main lp supply line (bent and crimped) again due to its inappropriate location in the wheel well without proper protection.luckily, the propane line did not rupture but required complete replacement.the main fuel tank filler tube is also located in the wheel well.this is a very poor design and poses significant risk of explosion when experiencing tire blowouts.vehicle chassis and brakes were also checked by an authorized ford dealer and no problems were found with brake overheating that may have contributed to tire problems.the vehicle has also been weighed and was not overloaded and the tire pressures were confirmed by a road service repair technician.( dot number: vdilixd257 tire size: lt22575r16 )

Two firestone steeltex tread separation on the same vehicle.the consumer stated while driving, he heard a very subtle, unusual sound what seemed to be coming from the front of the vehicle, but before the consumer could clarify what the sound was, it seemed that the left front tire had exploded, all but a foot of the tread separated which caused the tread to loudly bang inside and outside of the wheel well.during this incident the brake line likely broke and the consumer was unable to slow the vehicle down.consequently the vehicle hit a rail and all three occupants were injured. This information did not get included on first report.i just bought a new class c mh with the above listed tires in it.these tires are supporting a 16,000 pound mh and i am scared to death what would happen if one of these tires should pell its tread at 60 mph the normal speed we travel at. We also tow a small suzuki behind.on our motor home before this onea (class a) we had three michalin tires pell the tread two of them with in 60 miles of each other in all three cases i was able to stop but not before alot of damage was done to the coachit the (class a) weighted 6,000 more pounds than this one.we will not drive this new motor home until the tires on it are replaced or we are told they will not peel the tread.oh michalin did replace all 7 tires on the last motor home.those tires peeled at less than 25,000 miles .hope to hear soon thank you. Driving down i75 north of tampa in coachman motorhome , it started shaking then shaking got worse and worse, i slowed to 15 mpg and eased to shoulder stopped vehicle and looked at back tires , and found the tread had separated from the tire on the drivers inside dual tire. I checked back and there was nothing in the road and no visible puncture damage to tire. It just blew apart. When the tread separated it caused major damage to the underside of the coach. The box for the sewer connections was badly damaged and the filler tube for the fuel tank was hit and pulled in destroying the gas cap and adjacent area . Other pieces hit various parts of the rear bending and distorting the undercarriage.

Complete tread separation on right front tire.luckily, no one was injured.there was no trailor or real load in the back of the truck.it could have been much worse if it happened 20 minutes later on a twisty mountain road or hauling a load.tire pressure has been religiously checked at 72 psi for all tires and 48 hourd before this trip.these tires have never been off road 4-wheeling or heavy trailor towing.just finished a 1,000 mile trip to hamilton, mt and back to orem,ut over july 4th.there was no noticable wear, bubbles, or blemishes on exterior of any tires before this trip.onlynoticable damage is to the tire, scratches on wheel rim, and slight scuffing on fenders.the worst part of this is the attitude of both ford and firestone in blaming one another and no one will take responsibility for these defective tires.we will just have to wait for a serious injury accident and the lawyers to get it resolved! From 12000miles we reported to ford dealership that the truck is unstable at highway speeds.if any road is slightly unlevel the truck begins to travel from lane to lane almost uncontrollably and randomly.the truck has 25000 miles and six weeks ago i completely lost control on a slight curve in the road going between 30 and 35 the truck behaved as if it were on ice!!!i'm a commercial driver and was able to react to this surprise.i have been following the firestone recall and was shocked to find out that all four tires with between 40 to 60 percent tread remaining are separating.i validated this at a firestone dealership yesterday and they claim these tires are not in the recall.the unstable ride is totally unpredictable, if you apply the brakes to slow down the condition especially at 60-65mph becomes trecherous.this heavy and otherwise road steady truck moves like a basketball.letting off the fuel peddle works best.the dealership people have not helped at all. They suggest we are making up the problem.as you look at the center tread area of the tires it appears to be weak and uneven to the touch.the firestone rep. Suggested a whole bunch of other reasons but i have never seen tires with separations between the treads as are now forming on all four tires.i have never used the spare. I'm probably going to purchase michelin tires very soon.the firestone rep wants nearly $400 to replace with other firestone tires.i'd rather spend $600 and wait for any announcements for your agency, firestone or ford.i concede that there may be more going on with the truck but i did not have this problem before 12000 miles.ford is willing to reallign the front end and if i agree this will be the 4th time in this few mileage.i close by stating that this is a show vehicle and i carry no tools or other weight in the truck and basically put highway and local road mileage only.( dot number: 008061 tire size: lt265r16 )

When the first tire failed we were on i-70. A vibration occurred and then the tire lost about half of its tread. We changed the tire and returned home safely. The second tire began vibrating on i-90 just before buffalo wy. Being only about one mile from the campground we slowly made it in and changed the tire there. The next moring we drove to sheridan, wy to a firestone dealer where they replaced the tire free of charge plus balancing. Later i discovered the firestone dealer replaced my load range e tire with a load range d tire. The third tire blew without warning on i-70 throwing the tread into my tow vehicle and then jamming it into the tow dolly. Change the tire and now i without a spare. The forth tire began vibrating, i pulled over and inspected the tires and found another separated tire. Not having a spare we slowly traveled to goodland, ks to try and find a tire. Being a holiday we had to wait until the next morning to purchase two more tires. With the two new tires now on the left rear we made it home safely that night. We are very fortunate after four tire failures and no accidents. I've been driving for twenty-eight years and have never experienced anything like this before. Each time before leaving camp i always checked the tire pressure and made sure it was atthe recommended pressure. I drove on certified scales before and after the trip, before unloading to be sure the vehicle was'nt overlaoded. This leads me to believe there is aserious problem with these tires and should be added to the recall list immediately before more tire failures occurand possibly fatalities. Your prompt attention is appreciated. ( dot number: vd1l1xa156 tire size: lt22575r16 )

This is the second tire that has tread separation in less than 25,000 miles. The motorhome has the same tires on all 6 wheels. Approximately 80% of the tread separated from the tire carcass.it remained attached to the tread which was still attched to the carcass and damaged the left rear fender and door (approximately $800 in damage + $125 cost of the tire, see later).the carcass blew out immediately.control of the vehicle was not lost. I sent the tire to firestone for analysis and possible coverage of my damage due to a product defect.their response was that the tire had been damaged by a road hazard and they were therefore not responsible for the damages.in any event, i don't believe that their tire should catastrophically fail but i didn't believe i would have much success fighting their decision.the tire itself was covered by a road hazard warrentee and was replaced free of charge.the tires were nearing the end of their service life but still had a depth of tread within legal requirements.i have since replaced all 4 tires with those of another manufacturer.i send you this information for use in your current analysis of problems with these size tires.ultimately, i would be satisfied with reinbursement fo the body repair on my vehicle.the tires needed to be replaced because of normal (and acceptable) wear.
Tire 1 :whle traveling through south dakota on the interstate, the front right tire on the rv started making a thumping sound and within seconds the entire tread came off the tire, leaving the belts and inner tire only, the tire deflated and almost caused the rv to crash. The state police located a local repair center that came and changed tire to a new tire he had brought with him.he also mentioned the tires looked like retreads. Tire 2:while traveling through nebraska on our way back to texas, the inner right rear tire did the same thing, a thumping sound and the tread came off the tire leaving the belts and inner tire only, within seconds the tire was flat.because there are dual tires on the rear of the rv, we were able to safely move off the road, however one tire would not take us to the next town as it was damage and deflating.this caused damage to the inside wheel well as well as to the outer tire.the local police were able to find us a repair shop to come replace one tire and put the spare on for the second tire.at this time he notied that the spare was cracking on the sidewall right next to the tread (the spare had never been used), he also asked if they were retreads, as did the police officer, since he had stopped up the road and picked up the pieces of the tread so no one would run over them.these were new tires as delivered with the rv.at this point both the service man and police officer both looked at our tires and said the safest thing we could do was replace the rest of the tires.having had 2 problems on the same vacation within days, we than replaced the all but 1 of the remaining tires, which we kept as a spare and broughtthe 2nd tire home with us.on aug. 31/99 we contacted firestone and they wanted us to send all the tires to them.wanting an independent inspector to check the tires we have not sent the 2 remaining tires to them.we have one inflated tire and one damanged tire we brought back from the 2nd incident.

I was travelling eastbound on route 2 in connecticut when my drivers side rear tire fell apart.the tread separated from the tire body.i understand that this is not one of the tires listed on recent news reports, however, the exact same thing happened to my tire as the ones seen on news reports.i contacted a local firestone dealer in enfield, connecticut who stated to me that the a/t tire was not in question and therefore there was nothing he could do.i reitterated to him that this is the same problem that has been seen on news reports.on saturday, august 6, 2000, i purchased four new tires from sears.i showed the manager the tire in question and he stated that it was indeed tire tread separation and that it never should have happened.even though these are not the tires listed, i strongly believe that a defect exists with these also and should be looked into as soon as possible.please contact me should you need further information or wish to view the tire.thank you.( dot number: tire size: 23585r16e )

My complaint stems from an incident with the firestone steeltex at tire which lost it's tread and nearly killed my family.refer to my complaint which i classified under firestone, lt245/75r16 (june 28th, 2003). From what i have learned so far...firestone is being totaly unethical regarding their response to all these failures.i also feel that this organization, nhtsa is not representing the tax payers in that it is obvious from all these reports filed that something is seriously wrong with these tires.why don't you put all firestone, steeltex, tire complaints under one catagory?you are watering down the severity of this by having 10-15-20 or more different classifications where people such as myself lodge complaints.please do something about these tires....more people will lose their lives unless something is done.ak

Second failure in 3 months. Traveling on florida's turnpike. Just pulled out of service plazaattempting to get up speed to 55 mph. Steel wires in tire tread broke. The tire tread peeled off causing a blowout. Did damage to motorhome body parts. Detroyed safety sheilds in wheel well, broke electrical wires loose, badly damaged a storage compartment along with some of the contents. I reported the first (same type) failure to you in april 2002. I did'nt know to keep the tire tread the first time. Firestone replaced the first tire since i didn't wish to file any liabilty claim. I made the minor repairs myself. I saved and have the entire tread this time in a single piece. Ie-mailed firestone consumer affairs a week ago. I am waiting a reply to my request to file a claim for liability since i am unable to make the repairs this time. Since this happened twice in three months, i am convinced the factory installed tires were defective. Why did firestone change the name on this tire? the new tire is an r4s ii. Was there a problem with the r4s first edition?
We have now had 2 incidents with tire separation.i sent the first tire to firestone along with their form so we can them take care of the damage done with the first problem.in mid july firestones paralegal sent me a letter saying that the tire was not defective.a week and 1/2 ago i had a sescond tire separation.neither tire was a blow out.the tread just separated.i have the 2nd tire of which it is mostly together except for the 8" portion that started to come apart.i am not very happy with firestone to say the least.we are definately changing all tires but firestone needs to reimburse us for the damage & replacement tires.i plan to sue firestone if no action is taken by them.their lack of addressing the problem is a shame.fortuanately no one has been hurt- just a lot of frustration. While driving eastbound on i80 (two lanes each direction), two miles west of battle mountain, nv, the drivers side front tire of my 2000 ford f350 truck separated.the entire tread came off the tire, while the rest of the tire remained intact, include air in the tire.during separation, which happened in the blink of an eye, the tread severly damaged the vehicle, including the front bumper, the wheel well, the drivers door, and destroyed the side step.there were no indicators that something was going to happen.no vibration, or anything else.the truck violently swerved to the left, across the fast lane, and heading towards the median.fortunately, i was able to get control of the vehicle before in headed done the embankment and into the gully dividing the east and west bound lanes, and pulled the vehicle over onto the right shoulder.this was extremely difficult, due to the bumper being pushed into the tire.

While driving at a reduced speed on the interstate freeway, because of rain, i started to experience a vibration from the tires. At the first opportunity i pulled off into a rest area to check the tire pressure thinking that i had a tire that was going flat. I measured the air pressure in all 4 tires on my 2000 ford f-350. I measured 60lbs in the front and 70lbs in the rear. I inspected the wheels to see if there was any apparent problem with the tire but i couldn?t find anything. I deduced that the vibration might be a result of the tire throwing a balancing weight and i decided to continue on my journey since i couldn?t find any problem. About 8 miles further up the road i suffered a treat separation from the tire which came actually came off the tire. The tire did not lose air immediately as a result of the failure (it did have a slow leak that drained the tire after about 6 hours). I was able to maintain control of the vehicle through the entire incident and could safely drive it until i could find a safe placemile further up the road where i replaced the damaged tire. The resulting incident damaged the fender area of my vehicle and will require professional repair. As i mentioned earlier i was driving at a reduced speed for this section of the interstate freeway because of heavy rain and at no time did my speed exceed 60mph. The air temperature from the time i first noticed the problem until the failure was 43 to 38 degrees.

Had tread separations on 4 of the original 6 tires.at advise of dealer replaced oem tires with a larger size bridgestone tire which has not failed to this point.we were told by the tire dealer that the bridgestones had a greater load capacity than the firestones.the problem is the brigestones are larger, have a greater rolling diameter and affect the overall gearing to a point where the vehicle is sluggish (well, it was always sluggish, but now it's more so) and the transmission now hunts in and out of o/d.this is not the answer.we need the oem size tire back on the vehicle but it has to hold up.the failures started at 12,00 miles and occured at 14,000 and the last 2 @ 16,000.two times the tread separation destoyed the storage boxes adjacent to the rear wheel wells resulting in a damaged propane line, the wiring to a portion of the cabin was severedandstructural damage to the basement storage boxes.when we saw the investigation into steeltex tires it only confirmed what firestone would not say;that is there is a problem with these tires.copies of receipts for the damaged parts and repairs can be furnished upon request. Firestone steeltex failure on a 1997 ford f350.on june 20, 2005, the left front oem firestone steeltex tire failed at spped on i-95s between avberdeen and churchville maryland.since the truck is driven very little, all tires have 40,000 miles on them and have substantial tread remaining.also, i meticoulsly maintain presures.without warning and at about 65mph, the tread seperated from the tire carcass causing vehcile to be difficult to control.nonetheless, i was able to pull off-road without incident.tire clearly shows that the tread seperated from the body of the tire causing instant pressure loss and sidewall failure.just another example why problems with these tires are not limited to suvs or the limited batches that were recalled.

We were driving north of philadelphia, pa on 08/10/00.the left front tire suddenly went flat.i immediately pulled over to the right shoulder.i observed that the tire needed to be replaced.jacobs towing was contacted to come to the roadside and provide a tire change.(cost $50)when we arrived in maryland, 08/12/00, i took the flat to firestone at 1492-94 annapolis rd., odenton, md.a man wearing a blue shirt with red letters "firestone"no id tag, assisted us.he gave the work order to jeremy to check the tire for any road hazard damage.there was none.jeremy found a leak near the valve stem.jeremy said the valve stem is split and also noticed a "bubble" on the outside of the tire approximately 4-6 inches from the valve stem.this was seperate from the damage that the tire sustained while the vehicle sat on the flat tire.jeremy removed the tire from the rim and inspected the entire tire.he observed a large patch of rubber missing from the inside of the tire in the exact location as the outside "bubble."jeremy said, "it looks like your tire exploded on the inside, but i need to let my manager see this."the manager said, "that's natural."the manager proceeded to try to find various reasons for the deformity inside the tire, none of which he could fully explain.he even went as far as to state that someone must have stood on the valve stem, thus causing the damage.he also tried to prove that the hubcap caused the damage, which i quickly disproved.the manager refused to exchange the tires and refused to give me his name upon request.i purchased a "spare" for $111.34.this is the second tire that has been replaced on the rv.the first had a defective tread.the firestone dealer in houston, tx exchanged it.it also had the same id information as this tire.all the tires on the rv are from the vdil plant.since there currently is a recall on passenger tires from this plant, i am greatly concerned about the safety of these tires.

I have not experienced an actual failure of a firestone tire; however i feared for my safety because my tires were made at the decatur, il plant, the safety of steeltex r4s tires is now under scrutiny, and i have personally seen failures of two of the exact, same tire - one on a school van and the other on a rancher's pickup.it is highly probable that since the failures (tread separation and blowout) occurred in such a small town, they were not reported to nhtsa.i would not risk my safety, the safety of my family, or the safety of others on the road, so i replaced the firestone tires at my own expense.i would not risk becoming another statistic while waiting for someone to determine that the firestone steeltex r4s tires are unsafe.i believe that firestone should reimburse me for at least a part of the expense of replacing their highly questionable tires. (your form asked for all the letters and numbers of the tire size, but does not provide space for them to all be entered.my tires size is lt245/75r16, load range e.)
