Vehicle was hard to control due to tires being uneven & wearing out. Would constantly be correcting vehicle while driving. Took to dealer & had the brake pads & calipers replaced. Then to took vehicle to firestone retailer & informed nothing could be done since tireswere not onrecall. No replacement of tires.1999, ford, f350, lt265/75r16 with 39,000 miles.

We believe this motor home was sold to us with dealership knowing of axle problem, causing rv unable to have wheel alignment corrected. Front rear axle has slipped causing driving hazard. May have caused further damage to vehicle making it unsafe to operate. Rv had numerous smaller problems with this last one being the worst. This has caused us lots of loss of time to travel and enjoy the rv. Was advised not to take any long trips because of problem. Was on a vacation when problem with shower pan occured and shade broke and drawers broke. At same time refrigerator leaked water onto wood floor, which needs to be replaced.in addition, this has created an impairment of market value because of defects in this vehicle.

Blowout on right rear inside dual tire.(we felt fortunate it wasn't a front tire)because of this experience we replaced the 2 front firestone tires even though they showed no signs of problems; we will be replacing the 4 rear dual tires and spare with non-firestone tires soon. While driving on interstate at 65 mph, i noticed a vibration or rough ride followed by a complete tread seperation and blow out of the right rear tire on my gmc 3500 series long wheelbase savanna van. Tread remained attached to casing scraping a three foot arch on the side fender panel(paint scraped from steel belts and black rubber deposited)and the tail pipe was pulled into the wheel causing it to fold in two at the axle. Debrise from the tire hit several other cars and no accident resulted from this failure. Tire size was 245/75/16e inflated to proper presure five days prior, rotated at regular intervals and visually checked frequently.dt

Fortunately for my family and i, we were traveling along a straight section of turnpike just south of tulsa, ok at approximately 65-70mph.without warning, the right rear tire blew out.the sidewall is completely detached from the tread.the tread on the tire is fine and there were no punctures or other defects in the tire.it took the tire to two separate tire dealers (not firestone) for their opinions.both indiciated that the tire suffered from a total sidewall failure on the outside of the tire.both dealers examined the tire for punctures, etc.there were none.i took the vehicle and tire to the dealership for assistance.so far, they've been incredibly reluctant to assist.they have agreed to replace the one tire.however, i live in fear of placing my family of five in my practically new $40,000 vehicle.i have zero confidence in these tires and have ordered replacement tires (non-firestone of course).the primary reason i purchased this vehicle was safety on the road with my family, now i don't have that peace of mind with these tires.i've researched similar information on the internet after this occurrence and found at least 6 photos and reports of the exact same type of tire failure of this tire. I'd hate to imagine what would have happened if this had been on a curved section of highway at approximately the same speed if the blowout had been on the front outside tire.my family and i probably wouldn't be around to report this to you.i'm very concerned and upset with ford, firestone, and the nhtsa for not pursuing this with more vigor to date.ford has indicated to me, these tire failures are within acceptable industry standards and they don't want to set a precedent by replacing my tires.how many people have to die before these tire failures fall outside "acceptable industry standards". Please help.please respond so that i know what you are doing on my family's behalf. (dot number: vnw81x0260tiresize: lt26575r16)

Was making an emergency transport with a cardiac patient on board, aprox speed @ 70 mph, felt viberation for 5 to 10 seconds, then tread of tire tore from sidewalls and tread flew from under ambulance, came to a slow stop noticed what had actually occured, called for mutual aid to transport cardiac patient on to hospital, took pictures of tread, side walls remaining on rim, slowly drove ambulance back to bp station where attendant changed tire. On december 30, 1999, i took a trip to robert lee, tx with my new vehicle.upon awaking the next morning at my hotel, i discovered that my left rear tire was shredded and flat.upon my return, i contacted ford, who informed me that i would have to deal with firestone.i went to firestone, the technician tried to tell me that i had hit the curb with my right front tire, when in fact, it was my left rear tire that had my spare on it and had to be replaced.after going round and round with firestone, they informed me that i would have to pay half the price of a new tire.they were doing this as good customer service, at that time, they knew in fact, that there was trouble with their tires and failed to inform me.instead they had me foot the bill for relacement of the tire.i have contacted both ford and firestone numerous times, regarding this matter and i keep getting the same run around.they refuse to refund my cost of the tire and they stand by the fact, that only the specified tires of the recall, have had a problem.when in fact, this is a brand new vehicle, i had only had one month and this was its first long trip.i have been very disgusted in trying to deal with both of these firms and their disregard for the consumer's safety is of great concern to me.i am trying to have the other tires on my vehicle replaced and the monies they had me pay refunded. Pe00020, original equipment 1997 suburban, tire size lt24575r16, made in canada. All four tireshave crackes or splits aroundtread and sidewall which may cause the tread to separate.please provide further information.

Ford excursion with 2700 miles showed severe weather checking on the white letter side of all four tire sidewalls.the tires appeared as if they were rotting away.a ford dealership said that they were not in the tire business and refused to discuss the problem.firestone indicated that it was normal wear until i indicated that i wanted their opinion in writing.firestone then replaced all four tires, charging me for labor, balancing, stems, etc.the media has indicated that these tires are now failing like those found on the ford explorers.i have no faith in firestone or the tires and would like to see an immediate recall on the steeltexradials.dt

Firestone denies that the tires were faulty, they claim that i drove the vehicle with underinflated tires.before i drive this vehicle on the highway i always check the tire pressures and fluids.i replaced all of the firestone tires before one blew out on the front and caused a crash.in 26 years of driving numerous vehicles with various tires i have never experienced anything like these tires that have failed prematurely.i kept the remaining 5 of the tires from this set and am having them tested by someone other than firestone.i find firestones explanation of underinflation impossible to believe since i am the one who has properly maintained this vehicle.nlm

Person following me indicated other rear tire appears separating also.

1st tire separated on 07/01/02;2nd tire separation did damage to truck's brake line and lr quarter panel. Nhtsa appears non-responsive, as is firestone. Documentation on record to show tires rotated & checked every 3,000 miles by ford.tire checked for proper inflation 20 minutes prior to 2nd blow out on straight highway, not overloaded, moderate temperature.two remaining (not blown) tiresremoved and also show impending signs of failure.firestone sent tire and "rubber stamped" results as due to underinflation for unknown period of time.unknown period of time is when tread seperated, revealing belts and subsequently deflating tire.the now underinflated tire caused rim to damage tire wall which allowed firestone's inept conclusion.discount tire, gcr (bridgestone/fire stone), and ted wein's (firestone), agree independently on tire failure.apathy seems to sweep thru nhtsa and firestone setting in motion civil litigation/congressional investigation if nothing is done.add this to the over 162 other complaints on the steel tex, along with arizona's dps problems. This is third submittal to nhtsa with no response on first two!!! sen. Reid, nv, also being advised.

While driving down the freeway at 70 mph i heard a loud pop pop popas i confirmed it was my vehicle and proceeded to the right lane and to the shoulder of the road the left rear tire blew outcausing the vehicle to fishtail . I was able to maintain control and stop safely . The firestone tire has a tread seperationidenical to the firestone tires on the eord explorers . I am concerned thatthese seperation problem on firestone tires are simialar to those in the '70,s and that they are limited too one size or model. (dot number: vdw81xmtiresize: lt26575r16)

New tire due to warranty exchange, less than 2000 miles on rear tires of motorhome.traveling on fwy approximately 65 mph and passanger rear inside tire blew-out.complete tread separation and sidewall blowout.air pressure checked prior to leaving on trip less than 150 miles prio to blow-out.this tire and 3 others, same size and brand, had just been replaced due to weather cracking of prior tires.prior tires had less than 15,000 miles on them before replacement.luckily no crash, due to the blowout happening on crowded sunday afternoon freeway traffic in southern california. What do we do, as we have no confidence in firestone tires and want to replace with other brand, but would like compensation from firestone towards purchase of new tires?

Tires caused vehicle to bounce. This was due tobeltbeing broken inside, and causing tire to take an egg shape.

During a trip on the "alaska highway" in june, 1997, the inside right rear tire on my 1988 winnebago motorhome exploded while driving 65 mph on an asphalt surfaced road.the face of the tire tread was ripped open and a large patch of clinging tread caught the exhaust tail pipe taking it for a spin in the wheel well gauging its plastic lining, caught the mud flap ripping off two sq ft of fiberglass underbody and letting fly a few handfulls of thermal insulation.the concussion of the blowout also knocked loose a twelve ft long lower trim panel on the outside of the motorhome and dislodged the stator of the coach's domestic water supply pump.i picked up a trail of debris from the highway for several hunred yards.i worked with a mechanic in watson lake, yukon territories, canada for three days helping with the repairs spending a total of $850 us.the tire involved, firestone steeltek r4s 235-85x16, was not original equipment, but purchased 25 jan 92, from g&e tire & service in fort walton beach, fl.the tire was five years old and had 39,600 miles, and pressure was maintained at 80 psi.pictures of the tire and damage to the coach were submitted and claim paid by state farm.robert c. This report is in addition to the odi#763205 we have already sent.since the last report we sent we have experienced two more tire failures on the same motor home and have found that another owner has had two failures of his own.all five of these failures occurred in approximately a six week period.the last one we had was not an actual failure on the highway, but rather it was found while rotating the tires.this one was found on the right front of the vehicle.the other 4 were on the rear of the units.the last unit was discovered by the mechanic who was rotating the tires.he found the treaed was about to separate from the tire.we have removed all the firestone tires from the unit except for the new spare and replaced them with another brand.we have all the old tires as well as one from another unit.we contacted the ford motor company who have not responded.we contacted winnebago industries to simply advise them of the issue as they apparently have sold their units with this tire as standard equipment.they told us to contact the tire manufacture.we contacted firestone in denver and all they say is that the tire was overloaded and underinflated.we accepted their explanation until we lost two more tires and were made aware that another owners unit had experienced the same problem with two of his tires.we have kept the old tires off our unit except for two.we also have one of the other units tires that failed if anyone is interested in inspecting them.our concern is that when the tire in question is placed in service on a motor home, it may not be a proper tire for the units.

I was on vaction with my family driving on mountainous roads in northern arizona at approximately 55 mph.i began to feel a vibration in the steering wheel and noticed the console shaking.i slowed the suburban down to 15 mph and i could feel the rear end wobble.i took the vehicle to the nearest tire store and the informed me that the tire had separated and was on the verge of loosing its tread.i very carefullly drove to the nearest firestone dealer and had to pay a prorated price for a new tire since this particular tire had not been offically recalled.i am concerned that there are other firestone models with tire separation issues and i am fortunate that i caught my tire problem before a complete loss of tread occured at 55 mph with my entire family in the vehicle. I was driving on i30, 70 mph when the right front tire blew out. I got stopped without any injuries and changed tire. There was only about 6 inches of the sidewall left on the blown tire. I still have 6 of the same orignal tires left on this ford 350 dully truck. (dot number: vnop1wv174tiresize: lt21585r16)

This may be important on finding out why these tires are blowing. One of my tires blew out. But on the other two the valve stems were leaking air after driving a short distance (each at different time). When we stopped the truck we noticed the tire leaking air and had a flat in a matter of minutes (no we didn't hit or run over anything in the road). This leaking valve stems have made me believe that is why bridgestone keeps saying the tires are under inflated. I believe the stems start leaking as you are driving which in turn causes the blow out. We were lucky with the last two tires that went flat, as we were on surface streets and not on the freeway.( dot number: exbm14480- tire size: lt23575r16 )

While traveling the speed limit on an interstate highway, june 2, 2002, we had only traveled approximately 20 miles, when we experienced a tire explosion on the front driver's side.this caused us to lose control of our vehicle, crossing two lanes of traffic, and ending up in the median.before coming to a complete stop, the vehicle had traveled approximately 60 yards, turned sideways, and almost rolled.my excursion was up on two wheels, nearly rolling over.it stayed suspended in air for a few seconds before falling back down on all four wheels.no other vehicle was involved, and no physical injury was incurred.however, it endangered the life of my family, and traumatized my children.there needs to be a further investigation into firestone tires.there definitely is a problem there.

. I was asked to write to you about an incident in which i was involved in, to possibly help avoid having this kind of thing happen to someone else in the future.i'm not sure how much this will help, but i am doing this in the hope that it is researched.no safety defect mentioned.

Had 1st blow out in january 2002 no damage to motor home . Took tire to fireston dealer and he replaced it for free.2nd blowout happined 8-24-02 caused about $1500.00 damage to my motorhome. Went out today and replaced all 7 tires with goodyear tires.

While taking a short trip this weekend. (under 70 miles) i noticed a sudden vibration coming from the rear of our motor home and within a matter of seconds i heard a loud bang and several other noises as the motor home rocked from side to side. After regaining control i pulled off to the side of the road to discover the entire tread of my right rear tire completely missing and the sidewall of what was left blown out in what looks like two places. I have owned several recreational vehicals and have never experienced this type of failure.dt

Low tire after shopping, aired up 50 psi to drive home. As airing up the tire started to seperate/split down the center of tire around its' diameter. Quickly released air and changed tire. These tires has to be investigated!i've had 3 blowouts on separate occasions.tires had 15,000 miles on them.first blowout occurred on highway at 65mph on front passenger side, tire had multiple belt seperations.put on spare tire of same brand and size and barely got home before the belt started coming apart.went to firestone dealer, and they sold me another steeltex for replacement.2 months later went on a roadtrip to california at about 75mph and the front driver side tire tread completely came off and blew out.the van nose dived off the highway out into the desert and almost rolled.8 people almost were killed.every time the tire showed same symptoms before failure.vehicle would be on highway cruising when suddenly it would shake violently and then bam! i am an mechanic by trade and i keep my vehicle in top shape with correct air pressure and rotation, so this is not human or road error.severe damage was done to the van in the incident.i have since replaced the tires with another brand (bf goodrich) and have had no problems.the firestone steeltex has to be investigated as this is ridiculous aswell as dangerous!i feel i should be reimbursed for the replacement tires aswell as the damages!

While traveling on an interstate highway, observed a soft flapping sound that caused concern.before i could slow down or take any action the left rear tire tread separated from the wheel and then the complete tire was ejected from the vehicle.i was able to exit the roadway and called the state highway patrol. To report the incident and request roadside assistance.

Fortunately, it was one of the rear duel tires and not a front tire.i was able to control the vehicle and get it safely stopped.firestone replaced this tire.the other was in march of 1999 on a cool day in indiana.we were driving and got a terrible shimmy and the vehicle became difficult to drive.suddenly, boom, another rear duel tire went.i again managed to get it off the road and got it changed.firestone wouldn't give me a new tire on this one.they allowed a replacement value.i am disgusted with firestone tires.last march, before the media attention to the problem, i had vowed to never have another firestone tire on my vehicles.i shudder to think what might have happened if one of the blowouts had been a front tire on this 14,000 pound vehicle.please pursue this with vigor.i want new "non firestone" tires that i can trust on my future trips.thank you. I currently own a 2000 ford f350 truck with the original firestone steeltex a/t, lt265/75r16 tires that came original on the truck when i purchased it brand new.the truck now has about 28,000 miles and i have had the ford dealership perform all standard maintenance including tire rotations.the tires until just recently have all worn very evenly and i would estimate their wear at about 50-60% with pleanty of tread left on the tires.on saturday september 6th, 2003 i was driving on the highway with four passengers at approximately 70 mph. Suddenly the truck became unstable and begin shaking as well as pulling the steering very hard toward the right.i was able to get pulled over, and begin to inspect the truck to see if i could tell what was causing the problem when i noticed that my front left tire had a large bulge in the center of the tire tread which appeared to go all the way around the tire.thankfully the tire did not come apart at highway speed, however i am extrememly confident that it would have very soon.the tire has a very definite failure, and very premature based on the current mileage of the vehicle.i have seen the reports, etc. Concerning the past failures with firestone tires all around the time i purchased this vehicle and it sounds like there are many other complaints concerning the steeltex tires as well.please feel free to share my concern with the manufacturer and if there truly is a problem with these tires, i only hope that this complaint might save a life. I put my spare on the truck and i have the truck at the dealership right now to inspect the tire.i have also called firestone and have a plan to take it to a firestone store if the ford dealership is not willing to replace my tires under warranty, or at least provide a fair amount towards new tires.thank you, justin earl dauenbaugh.

I have a99 f250 with firestone 16in steeltex a/t tires. I recently had a routine service visit to my ford dealer and told them my two right tires look like the tread was separating from the side wall. After they inspected the tires they agreed there was a problem and to take it to a firestone dealer in which i did. Upon my visit to firestone they said they would only give me 45% reimbustment on those two tires because of tread wear. This is unsatisfactory to me because of these factors, which i expressed to them: ther is only 34,000 on both the vehical and tires and the problem is not tread wear but the quality of the tire; the vehical is a 4x4 and not having the same tires and tread wear can cause damage to the four wheel drivetrain, that is why both ford and firestone reccomments to rotate the tires on a periodicaltime frameand when it is time to put new tires on that they are the same type of tires;this vehical is on athree year lease and i expect the tires to last as long as the lease does; the unsafe quality on the 15in tires are also on the 16in tires, but it seems everyone that is envolved in this firestone problem has had there heads in the sand about the 16in tires. I am currently driving on these tires and hope and pray i have no accident. If you can assist me in anyway please contact me as soon as posslble. I have contacted firestone but they will not respond.
