Can't get dot number, nothing left of that part of tire but ropes and fibers.no warning, no noise to indicate a blowout, just sudden loss of control as the right front tire fell apart.tread and belts all completely separated from each other, sidewalls shredded.looks like the tire perforated around entire circumference at the "beading".nothing left of sidewalls except "ropes" connecting inner rim to tread surface, can see all individual layers of tread, belts and fiber separated from each other.father states it took every bit of strength (and past racing experience of several decades ago) to maintain control of vehicle and keep it from rolling.i am keeping this tire in case anyone wants to inspect it, it looks strikingly similar to the ones involved in recall when they failed.father has never felt anything like this when it went, including when racing.have never seen a tire look like this after a blowout.the tread and belts have completely separated from each other, all the way around!it looks like it just fell apart.this is a dangerous tire. Fire stone steeltex tire not covered by latest recal. Tires are comming appart at 30k miles. Large peices of rubber missing from tire. Dealer will not replace under tire warrantee. I think that because of the dealer/manufacturer's refusal to admit that these issues are related to the tires and not the "use" you are getting inaccurate data about the number of defects in these poor quality products.

We were driving down highway at posted speed (65) and had been driving for approximately 30 miles at time of tire failure.just a few moments (approx 1 minute) before the failure, the vehicle seemed to want to "wander" a bit as if a tire were a bit low.then there was a loud explosion, the vehicle dropped to the right rear, we got a lot of vibration and loud internal noise.we applied the brakes and manuevered to the side of the road.both sidewalls had blown completely free of tread "belt"separating fairly uniformly along a line roughly 1 inch below the tread.tire was in 3 distinct pieces, all 3 pieces in tact and wrapped around the wheel and axle.only visible break in interior surface of tread was a piece of the steel belt material protruding into the tire approx 3/8 inch.otherwise, interior surface clean and smooth.no external punctures of any kind.explosion was violent and feel anti-lock brakes saved the day for us.person following behind said they had never seen a tire explode like that (i.e. Very visible from several hundred feet behind).we have photos and the remains of destroyed tire, plus all 3 of the other originals if needed.immediately replaced all 4 with another brand. (dot number: vnw81xy459tiresize: 265/75r16)

Upon inspecting the tires (lt265/75 r16), during routine rotation, 3 of the 4 road tires have developed numerous 1/4" splits in the center and outer tread. On one tire they are as close as 1" apart from one split to the next. (dot number: vnw81xl389tiresize: lt265/75/r)

Re:firestone steeltex radial tireslt24575-r16we purchased a new 2003 gmc duramax diesel.we have 24,000 miles on the truck & tires and noticed chunks about thumb size being thrown off of the tread pattern.this is all 4 tires.we are now afraid to drive it especially pulling our 31' travel trailer.obviously, this is a safety issue and not normal wear on any tires.please respond, thanks.

I noticed a continuous tire thump" and stopped the vehical and checked the tires. The left front tire had a flat spot in the center of the tread, about 2in x 1.5 in. There were no other abnormatities. After traveling about 30 more miles the "thump" got alot more apparent and i heard a loud "clinking" noise. I stopped and inspected the tire and found the tread was separating from the tire over about a 12 in. Of length where the steel belt stops at the side wall.the tread was still intact. I beleive that if i had not stopped when i did that total seperation of the tread would have occured within the next mile or so. I have the tire if you need to inspect it and/or i can send you photos . (dot number: vn1181a098tiresize: lt 245/ 75)

Driving 60 mph on interstate 44. Felt sudden vibration. Thought it was roughness in the road, so i moved to a different lane. Vibration did not stop. I then thought that it might be another firestone steeltex radial tire tread separating because i have had eight (8) previous firestone steeltex radial tires suffer catastrophic tread separation failures! before i could move to the right and get off the highway, the tread peeled all the off. It damaged the motorhome severely. Note that, although all 8 previous tread separation failures occurred explosively, this one did not explode. I got off the highway, let the air out of the failed tire and installed the spare tire until i could go get a new replacement tire.

While driving at approximately 60 mph in my 2001 ford f250 super duty pick up truck, the truck started to vibrate. I shifted into neutral, thinking it might be a u-joint or driveline problem and the vibration got worse. I went back into drive and it settled down somewhat. I stopped and looked over the tires, u-joints (what i could see of them, the truck is 4-wheel drive) and other suspension components. I did not notice any lumps or bumps on any of the tires.i decided to return home, a distance of about 20 miles. Approximately 3 miles form home, the truck shook violently and then there was a loud "slapping" noise. I pulled over and saw that i had separated a tread from the right rear tire. I picked up the separated tread and drove home at about 25 mph. I changed the tire at home. The tire was inflated to 55 psi and is still holding that pressure.the tire is a firestone steeltex radial a/t, lr e, dot number vdw8 txl 4400.

I noticed a pull to the left on my 2001 ford f350 with firestone steeltex radial tires lt 265 75r 16 thinking it was air presure related the day before the incident i checked the presure in all tires and all had required presure, so i thought there may be an alignment issue. The next day the left front tire failed without notice while traveling 70mphdown the turnpike causing signifiant dammage to my vehicle an almost a catastrophic crash. Upon installing the spare the pull to the left disappeared, thus no aligment issue the tire must have been on it's way to failure causing the pull to the left. The tread seaprated from the tire completly, but the tire sill held presure.

Tread seperated, then blew ou after traveling for 4 hours, mild day 80 deg. Just rebalanced and rotated tires less than 500 mils prior. No warning, no noticable tire wear or underinflation. Damage to truck was extensive, $1100 fender, tire, etc. Spoke w/ firestone, they didnt give any aid, just send the tire to nashville, with clain form. I waited for 4 weeks then they sent check w/ simple explanation of damage covered. Since then i've no luck speaking w/ them concerning replacement tires or reasonable reparations on remaining 6 tires. Remaining tires are showing sidewall cracks and bulges. We have company vehicles that have firestone steel tex radial r45 tires on them, we have had 3 occurences in which the tires have blown.they look like the tread has just been peeled off.luckily no one was injured in the later 2ofthese occurences, but one blow out did injure not only an employee but another person, and did total a vehicle. We do still have these on some other of our vehicles.i do know that they did have a recall on these type of tires in may, but they say they have all damaged tires in hand, but i am not so sure about that, since we are experiencing these problems with these same types of tires.i am including the date of the last occurence, and will supply dates of the other 2 when available. *la

I had my firestone steeltex radial a/t tires rotated by the dealership(jay wolfe cheverolet) on my 2001 silverado 2500 hd short bed crew cab.tire size lt245/75r16 load range e.this was done on 07/05/05.i had noticed a wobble in the steering wheel and a slight pulling to the right, that seemed to become more noticeable the more i drove it.i checked tire pressures, lug nuts, tread wear.everything looked fine.tires have 51,780 miles on them, and were not down to the tread wear indicators.on 07/12/05 i was traveling down i-35 n at 60 mph when all of the sudden the front right tire completeley seperated the tread from the rest of the tire, luckily, the tire did not blow out, and i was able to keep it under control and bring it to a stop on the side of the highway, the tread seperation did quite a bit of damage to the vehicle, right front quarter panel, wheel well shroud, rockerpanel, right outside mirror.i am awaiting an estimate from the body shop.i have replaced all four tires with michelins, that same day.i have kept the failed tire and tread that seperated.
