I received a notice from firestone tires corporate office regarding a safety recall on 2001 ford excursion steeltex radial a/t tires lt265/75r16 lr d [xxx] and promptly submitted the required information via mail on jun3 4, 2004.i have tried repeatedly to contact firestone via mail, telephone, and e-mail since that time with no response.updated 07/25/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I have previously complained to this site and the firestone customer relations of my steeltex a/t tire cracking on the side wall.i was told to have them checked at a firestone dealer and i was told the integrity of the tire was not compromised.on july 7, 2004, my family and i were almost killed (minor injury) when the right front firestone steeltex a/t tire exploded, the tread separated from the tire as we were traveling 70 miles an hour on i-85 north.this is a bad product and i believe my suspicions were correct when i previously complained to everyone.

My daughter drives a 2002 ford excursion and with very low miles the wear of the tires is unacceptable.they are wearing fast and uneven and make noise.please look into these tires because she travels with my precious grandchildren daily.she has twins that are 2 years old and another son that is 3 that all ride in car seats.thank you.

I was driving on a 2-lane state highway at approximately 65mph.my pickup is a 2001 ford superduty diesel supercab 4x4.the weather was overcast, temperature about 75 degrees.i was pulling an 18' flatbed "car hauler" type trailer, total weight (trailer & load) approximately 1,000lbs.i had driven 60 miles with no indication of vibration or problems.i stopped for an hour then resumed driving.i noticed some vibration, so stopped and checked both pickup and trailer tires.inflation was good and there were no indications of problems with any tires.i continued my trip.within the next 5 miles the tread separated from the left front (drivers side) tire on my pickup.the pickup immediately lurched to the left across the centerline.i regained control and was able to pull off the shoulder without further incident.the tread separation damaged the fender, running board, inner fender, insulation liner, and front bumper.there were no persons injured.i was able to "tie-wrap" the inner fender panel back in place and install the spare tire to continue the trip.

Firestone steeltex a/t tires(3) - failures.on 3 separate occasions, steeltex a/t tires manufactred by bridgestone firestone and fitted as original equipment on my chevrolet truck failed.each tire failed under normal driving conditions.i consider the tires to be faulty and very unsafe because 3 of the 4 tires failed on my vehicle within a matter of a few months of each other.quite serious damage resulted in each incident. The tires 3 have been returned to firestone, as requested, and have been examined by lisoni & lisoni, ntsa officials and the firestone representatives.i would like nhtsa to recall all steeltex tires to ensure they are completely removed from the market.someone is going to get killed!thank you.graham ross - mister cool ice creampo box 221, coppell, texas 75019(972) 489-9879e-mail: [email protected]: i can't put all 3 incident dates below so i have put august 1 2002, so i can get to next page.

While driving 30 mph the consumer lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a ditch.the consumer stated that the vehicles tires lose air prematurely. The cause has yet to be determined. Please provide any additional information.

The contact owns a 1999 mercury mountaineer.the vehicle has firestone steeltex a/t tires.while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle began to swerve from side to side.the driver pulled onto the side of the road and discovered that the rear passenger tire had tread separation.the tire size was unknown.the current mileage was 102,172 and failure mileage was 102,162.

Firestone steeltex a/t tires...repeated flat tires on new vehicle...different tire each time...different months.*la

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet suburban equipped with firestone steel tex a/t; tires, size lt245/75/r16, dot number: w2tv2f33600.the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the rear driver side tire tread separated, causing the tire to explode.the contact replaced the tire and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 101,216 and the current mileage was 117,200.

While driving a 2001 ford f350 pickup on the us highway 50 freeway in the shingle springs, ca, area, i had a firestone steeltex a/t lt265/75r16 tire blow-out and tread separation. The original equipment tire and vehicle had 31,617 miles on it at the time of the failure. I obtained roadside assistance to have the failed tire removed and the spare tire installed. I remembered that several years ago that there was an issue with firestone tires installed on ford vehicles. I found that recall number 04t003000 was issued, which stated that i should have received a notification to owners that began on march 5, 2004. I never received the notice to take my vehicle to a ford dealer for the free replacement of the tires as indicated in the recall notice. I contacted the ford dealer where i bought the truck new in 2001 concerning the tire failure and replacement per the recall notice. The ford dealer stated that they were not aware of the recall notification and advised me to contact ford motor company. The ford motor company representative refused to acknowledge that the recall notice that was issued applied to the firestone steeltex a/t tires that were installed on my truck as original equipment. I contacted bridgestone firestone who advised me to ship the failed tire to nashville, tn, at my expense for their "evaluation", but failed to address the issue of the safety of the remaining 3 tires and the 1 installed spare tire that are still installed on the vehicle. As of this date i have the failed tire and i have not shipped the failed tire to bridgestone firestone. I am now concerned about the safety of the 4 firestone tires that are currently installed on my vehicle.

The right front tire shredded and came apart while driving at 50 mph. The tire started bouncing. This almost caused consumer to lose control of vehicle. However, consumer was able to maintain control of vehicle, and steer it to the side of the road. Tire was replaced with a spare. Firestone was not willing to assist.

Request reimbursement for recalled tires the consumer replaced.*ph consumer request reimbursement for replacing tire equipment on her 2001 ford excursion.the tires failed prior to the consumer receiving the recall notice.*mr

Tire tread separation firestone steeltex radial a/t 265-75-r16 load range e dot number vnw81xl4600.while driving eastbound on us-60 just past the florence junction interchange with my spouse and infant child in the vehicle, the left front tire suffered a tread separation causing the tire to explode and go flat. Noise from the tread departing the tire was heard seconds before the tire ruptured. Handling was difficult while the tread was separating and became more difficult after the tire lost air pressure. The vehicle was pulled from the right lane into the left lane and nearly departed the roadway. Significant damage occurred to the vehicle. Repairs are at $3700 and rising not including tire replacement.the tires are rotated regularly according to the vehicle manufacturers 5-tire rotation schedule and a visual inspection of the tires minutes before the failure revealed that no tires were under-inflated.the ford dealer replaced one of the tires when the vehicle was only a few months old because of pulling. After the first tire rotation, the vehicle pulled in the opposite direction indicating that at least one of the new tires was defective.tread wear is very mild on the tires with approximatelyinch of tread remaining. Sidewalls on the tires show dryness but a failure did not appear imminent. Mileage is just over 32,000.it seems obvious that a manufacturing defect caused these tires to fail well before tread wear was at a hazardous level. It is surprising and disappointing the nhtsa has not ordered a recall of these tires when research on the nhtsa web-site indicates several failures similar to tires that were previously recalled. If these tires were common on sport utility vehicles instead of long wheel base pick-up trucks and excursions, they would have been pulled from the roadways long ago as other firestone products have been. At this time, firestone has not warranted any of the tires as the vehicle is still in the repair shop.

My right front tire ruptured while traveling north, on i-15 about 5 to 10 miles south of payson, utah. The truck was a 2002 ford f350 superduty and these were the original tires.i was going about 65-70 mph when the tire burst and was lucky to keep control of the vehicle. The tire tore apart and caused about $2800 worth of body damage to the front end.it has now been repaired by greiner ford in casper, wyo.while the truck was a 2002, it had less than 10,000 miles on the truck and the tires.the tread depth was still excellent.the factory equipped tires are the firestone steeltex a/t size lt265, 75r16.if the truck had rolled over this accident could have been fatal.

I am the original owner of a 2002 ford excursion that is equipped with the firestone steeltex a/t tires lt 265/75r16 119/116r load range d; with about 60k miles.on friday night i experienced a tire blowout while operating at highway speeds (55 mph).it appears that the tread separated from the tire. In checking the web sights this evening there appears to have been a "safety improvement" for this tire.i have yet to receive it.who can address my issues of replacing my tires and or repairing the damage.

All 4tires developed cracks in the sidewall. There was a recall for these tires, but this vehicle was not included in the recall.*la

All 4 tires had very poor traction which resulted in the truck skidding on wet roads. A tire shop indicated the problem occurred because the outside ribs of the tires had no grooves in them, so the rain, etc., could drain. The liquid was trapped, which caused the vehicle to hydro-plane. The dealership is aware of the issue but is not providing any assistance. These are load range e tires.

The contact owns a 1994 gmc sierra 1500 equipped with firestone stealtex a/t (lt245/75/16). While driving approximately 45 mph the contact heard a loud popping sound. The contact stopped the vehicle on the shoulder of the road and noticed the tire blew out. The contact noticed the side wall had also separated. The tire was replaced with the spare tire. The vehicle was taken into an auto shop to have the tire replaced. The dot number was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 50.

While drivingat 60 mph consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front of vehicle.consumer pulled over to investigate the noise and noticed that the left front tire hada blow out. Firestone steeltex radial at,lt265/75r/16, dot#unknown.

Separation of belt/tread between radial and bias plys on left rear at 62 mph.fender area damage to vehicle.vibration prior to separation, stopped and checked, but visual inspection saw no indication of problem.purchased vehicle used in 2004.not original tires.still lots of good tread some sun checking on sidewall.

Consumer received a recall letterabout a month ago regarding firestonesatellites a/t tires, lt265/75r16 load range, dealer had not received the formsauthorizingthereplacementof recalledtires.

Our 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd truck, which is still under warranty, was presented to firestone on saturday april 10, 2004 at 10am to show them excessive cracks surrounding sidewalls consistently on all four original tires. They gave us a report of the tread wear on the bottoms which was not the concern we had and offered us a pro-rated rate of 45% off of the manufactures suggested retail which would come to $489 with costs. We explained that the tires were dry rotting and dave, the service manager at the greensburg, pa firestone tire & service center explained that cliff from firestone's engineering dept, the regional manager had told him that there are three stages of dry rot and if the tires were dry rot you would be able to fit a penny into the cracks. This is where we left off as of today and will be communicating further with them.

I have steeltex at lt245/75 r16 tires on my 95 suburban. Tires purchased in 2001. Passenger front blew out 2/20/04 while traveling on hwy 10 traveling about 65 mph. I have heard about a recall. What forms do i need to complete to get a refund/ exchange of all tires?

Consumer received a recall on the firestone steeltex tire.the tires were replaced by the consumer.contact wasmade with the manufacturer, and it was acknowledged that the reimbursement would be made upon receipt of the special forms which were never received by the consumer.

The contact owns a 2002 ford f-250 sd.while placing air in the tire, the contact discovered cracks in the sidewalls of each tire.there was no recall regarding this failure.the current and failure mileages were 26,000.updated 07/31/08.*ljupdated 08/05/08

All 4tires developed cracks in the sidewall. There was a recall for these tires, but this vehicle was not included in the recall.*la

I have 4 firestone which i believe to be defective.they are about 6 years old but in the last 3 years i have only driven them about 3,000 miles.i recently discovered a sidewall separation on all 4 of these tires on the outside of the tires.i have removed the tires and replaced them with goodyear tires.i have saved the old tires for further evaluation.

The vehicle started shaking uncontrollably without warning, the driver was able to pull over.the driver noticed that the right side tire sidewall exploded.the driver was able to change the tire.the driver drove to the dealer for inspection.firestone steeltex at 245/75r16 #dot yn11bab.please provide additional information.

I just noticed the sidewalls of firestone steeltex tires ( size lt245/75r16 at load range e)cracking in a uniform circle about 2 inches in from the edge of the tread. It looks like they are cracking along a seam in the sidewall of some sort. I reviewed the warranty and it states that dry rot cracks are covered for 4 years from the date of purchase or if no proof of purchase exists, 4 years from the manufactured date the tires came as original equipment on a brand new 2003 silverado 2500 pick up truck that i purchased on april 5, 2003. I am assuming that date qualifies as the date of my purchase of the tires. I had the local firestone dealer in haysville, north carolina look at them and his position is that since the tires were manufactured between 20000 and 2002, the warranty no longer applies. These people are selling tires that are unsafe and prone to sidewall failure and then will not do anything to correct the problem.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 45 mph the rear passenger tire blew out in the sidewall.the vehicle was driven off the road and the tire was later taken to the tire dealer who determined the contact drove over a sharp object, although the contact did not notice anything in the road.the auto dealer has been alerted.updated 7/13/2006 -

On aug 14, 2004, approx 12:00noon, i was driving about 30mph , pulling a boat/trailer on a state maintained gravel road in lewis & clark county, mt., when the right front tire suddenly went flat with no sound of blow-out.after immediately stopping, i noticed the tire was comletely shredded.the entire outer sidewall had separated from the tread area by about 95%. The tires were not under inflated because i had checked them not a week before and all other tires are currently still inflated to correct specs.the tread was not overly worn the tires still had quite alot of milage left on them. And whatever else firestone might claim was wrong, does not mean that the tread should fly off theyre tires.quality tires should be able to still hold together reguardless of any small lack of attention on the drivers part.on a second note this isnt the first time firestones have failed me in an identical way. The same thing happend to the firestone tires twice on my jeep grand cheerokee.and everyone keep in mind this tire i have listed above is the one being used to replace the recently recalled identical model but load range d tire from firestone.

While towing my enclosed car hauler trailer, with a classic car inside, my right rear tire on my f250 super duty pickup exploded.i was running 70 mph at the time in alabama.i did not wreck but i really had to fight to keep it on the road until i could stop.the tire is in two pieces.the firestone store in pensacola, florida said the tire is not one of their recalls.however, i understand these same tires on the excursions are.why are the same tires, when installed on f250 pickups, not included in the recall?i will say, regardless of the outcome of this, i will never, never buy another firestone tire of any kind.in fact i hope that firestone is put out to pasture forever.

Firestone steeltex, 265x75x16 front left tire nearly seperated onfreeway.

Total tread ply separation on a firestone lt 265 r75 16 steeltex at load range e tire.tire came as original equipment on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche 2500 4x4, with a 12,000 lb tow package.when i took delviery of this vehicle in 2001, firestone was in the process of recalling other tires that were failing the same way, i was assured by both chevrolet and firestone that this product far exceeded the specs for the purpose i selected this vehicle, and these were not part of the recall.now i see that this tire has had a limited production date recall.i am in the process of filing a claim with firestone to re-coup $1600.00 of body damage to the vehicle, but i thought i should make my voice heard to you.as a side note i was towing my travel trailer at somewhere between 55 to 60 mph on an overcast 60 degree day in florida, when i felt what i thought was a trailer tire going down.as i was in heavy traffic in the right lane with limited guard railed emergency shoulder space to pull off, i immediately begain to slow even more and put on my emergency flashers to warn following motorists of my future intentions.as my speed dropped to around 45 mph in the process of trying to find enough shoulder to stop on,the tread grenaded off.i have always been especially aware of proper infations of tires, checking by gauge both the tow vehicle and the trailer each day before hooking up and pulling, as i did this day before leaving the campsite.so under or over inflation is not an issue here.the trailer was balanced so perfectly that by the time i was able to safely get off the road, the tire casing was still inflated and the trailer was holding the truck up in the rear.this and the lack of speed were probably the only reason i did not lose control, because i am sure that under normal driving conditions the casing would have blown.

As i was driving northbound on fm 730 in azle, texas, one of my lt265/75r16 (lre) firestone steeltex a/t tires failed and almost caused me to have an accident. The tire was on the drivers side rear position. I was traveling at 45 mph when this happened. The tread came off of the casing causing damage to my vehicle. The tire did not deflate and maintained the proper pressure. All tires were immediately removed and replaced.the owner of m&d tire in springtown, texas, checked the air pressure before the tire was removed from the vehicle. This was witnessed by myself and another customer. There were no punctures and no heavy loads have ever been placed on this vehicle. The tread was recovered and measures 9/32 nds. The mileage on the vehicle (ford f250 p/u) at that time was 40,200. Firestone was contacted and wants me to send them the tire at my expense.m&d tire did replace all four tires. I do have the tire and tread at my home.i need to know if i should send the tire to firestone as they are requesting for my claim with their company?

On 06/28/2004, i was traveling on a major highway at the legal speed limit (70 mph) in my 2001 f-350 pickup truck.suddenly, i experienced a catastrophic failure of the left front tire, which included immediate tread separation and loss of inflation.the failure (blow-out) caused the vehicle to immediatelyand violently swerve to the left, into the oncoming lane of traffic where i eventually came to a stop on the opposing shoulder of the highway.although my vehicle never struck another vehicle or object, it sustained approximately $1,930.00 in damage from the exploding tire.the defective tire was a firestone steeltex a/t, size lt265/75r16.i have retained the separated tread and tire carcass should anyone desire to inspect it.

A firestone steeltex at (245-75 r16 lr e) mounted on the lr of my 2002 gmc sierra 2500hd failed while driving on hiway 58 in the vicinity of tehachepi ca at approx 1630 hrs. The tread separated from the sidewall/body of the tire exposing steelbelts. The tread was not recoverable. The failed tire did not explode or disintegrate and remained inflated. The tire had accumulated 32650 miles since new (oem tire) without incident.all four tires were inflated to 75psi at 0630 am that morning in vacaville ca, and checked in bakerfield during a fuel stop. All tires were within 1 lb of another and registered 84 psi (warm inflation pressure). Contact with firestone indicated that the tire should be inspected by firestone engineers to determine the cause of the failure. The tire was shipped in accordance with their instructions. Firestone engineers concluded that the tire was "operated for a period of time at a pressure insufficient for the load being carried". The load on the tire was estimated not to exceed 2500 lbs. The failed tire retained nearly 70 psi when checked immediately after the failure despite a small leak from the separation. The tire was not damaged by road hazards or otherwise subjected to neglect. All tires were routinely rotated at 7500 miles intervals and most recently rotated at 30000 miles. Firestone has been asked to provide scientific evidence to support their assertion that the tire was not defective but has failed to do so. I have retained all four tires and will provide them for independent inspection. I have made one final request for information regarding the method of inspection and the documentation of those results. I have heard nothing fromfirestone as of 26 feb 04.the dealership on record as selling the vehicle/tires insisted without hesitation the tire failed due to a manufacturing defect.

1. I have a 2001 ford excursion. I had firestone steeltex a/t lt 265-75 r16's all the way around my vehicle. We were driving on the highway and had a blow out; it was the right front tire. We got out looked at the tire and the tread had separated. The steel in the tire torn up the undercarriage and wheel well and did a lot of damage underneath and to my grill guard. Within less than 50 miles, my other front tire went out. But with this one the tread was pulling away and falling off (again tearing up the body as it went). The tire never blew but the tread did enough damage to my truck that it will have to be fixed on that side also. The body of my truck will need work. When i open my doors they pop because it is rubbing on the frame that has been pushed back. When we got to our destination it was late saturday so we had to wait until sunday (which was easter sunday and not many places were open). We went to sears and had new tires put all they way around the vehicle. We were not going to take the chance of the back ones separating on the way home.

Firestone has a dark history of producing dangerous tires subject to exactly the same kind of failure i experienced.why hasn't something been done to correct these failures?is there some compensationavailable from ford or firestone when these failures are clearly due to manufacturing defects and ford continues to contract for these defective tires?
