The transmission was replaced once by the original owner.it blew again, and was luckily, still under warranty.the fact that 2 transmissions were replaced is very troubling.we now call our explorer, the exploder!i recently read of the study underway into the firestone tires peeling off their casings.this is exactly what happened to us.thank goodness, no one was hurt, just major vehicle damage.had it been the front tire, i don't think i would be alive to write this.please get these tires off the market, before others are killed! ( dot number: w2hl1moo15 tire size: p235/75r15 )

Replacement tires were same as factory original, rated at 50,000 miles.at 40,000 miles, began to experience vibration, the source of which could not accurately be identifed by mechanic.(u-joint and several bearings replaced to no effect).during driving trip to little rock for thanksgiving, vibration worsened, which i attributed to bad road surface conditions in mo and ar.during return trip to kansas city from little rock, approx. 100 miles west of little rock on wb i-40, right rear tire tread failed, delaminating completely from tire core at 70 mph.lost control of vehicle and traveled down grass embankment of center median, hit concrete drainage way at center, and continued up the opposite embankment toward oncoming eb traffic.regained partial control as vehicle slowed up the embankment, and was able to steer vehicle to rest back at the bottom of the median.passing motorists assisted in returning vehicle to the highway, and i put on the full-size spare.passing arkansas state trooper stopped and ascertained that there were no injuries nor collisions with other vehicles.no report was filed.continued to kansas city on spare tire; no further vibration noticed.approximately 5000 miles later replaced all four tires with same brand, firestone atx.these tires now have approximately 8000 miles.no further incidents to report.originally thought to be isolated incident, and so did not report to nhtsa until i heard news reports about your investigations on this tire.ntb salesman noted that they were familiar with failure problems on this tire at the time that i bought the last set. Iwent ahead and bought them because original set performed ok, and they were most economical product for my budget.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r14 )

Tire delaminated while driving on a multi-lane highway in moderate traffic.the vehicle suddenly slowed and my wife reacted by further slowing the vehicle to prevent further vehicle jarring/swaying.she was able to fight the loss of vehicle control, and cross several lanes of traffic to stop the vehicle on the shoulder.the tire flap tore the wheel well and side of the vehicle, causing over$2000 damage. This failure put the lives of my wife, two young children, two other passengers, and other drivers in grave danger.i am offended that firestone and ford have not accepted responsibility and put containment plans into action.this is the second occurrance of a tire issue on this vehicle (with the original equipment firestone radial atx tires).when the first occurred, we noticed a thumping sound and upon inspection found that the tread was missing (down to he steel belt) in one localized area of the inner edge of the tread (about 4" diameter failure).i found this an odd failure and approached the local ford dealership, who attributed it to wheel alignment.they claimed no responsibility and offered no suggestion.the service manager even resorted to vulger language directed at me.i spoke to a customer mediator and berge ford eventually performed a wheel alignment free, but i paid for the tire replacement (2 tires).i did not report this to firestone at the time.the fluid has leaked out of both front shock absorbers.i continue to have issues with engine ping and gave up after bergeford attempted 3 times to resolve the issue.( dot number: tire size: 235/75r15 )

I had just come off the freeway, when the front right tire threw its tread off, i pulled to the side of the road and changed it to the spare tire. Later on i had all 4 tires replaced.( dot number: tire size: p235/75/15 )

While driving across alligator alley (i-75) in florida in my 95 ford explorer around 8:30pm at a speed of 75mph with four well-kept inflated tires with no visual defects, the left rear tire tread pealed off from the core of the tire without warning or impact of any object in the road. My suvs rear end began to swerve, i was able to keep some control long enough to bring the vehicle to a stop with no injures. The only damage was to the car from the tread breaking way.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

While driving on i95 in north carolina , on july 06, 2000 the right front tire shed its tread and left us waiting about four hours until the local firestone tire store opened so we could get the tire replaced and continue on our trip to maryland.upon return to myrtle beach , s.c. I had recently learned of recall and immediately went to the tire dealer that i had purchased my tires from. They told me they would have the tires in sometime this next week and they would replace all four at no cost to me.but they also said they wouldreplace my tires with the wilderness tx and i dont think i would feel comfortable with anymore of their tires, so i will return to the store this week and seeif i can get another brand of tire as my replacement at their expense. I would also like to be reimbursed for the damage to my vehicle in the amount of $1268.00 and i hope they will agree to this but i was told to contact firestone and the number that has been given on the national news and of course i can not get throug( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

I noticed in spring of 2000 that my explorer would shake while driving.my husband took it in to have the tires balanced. Mechanic, as well as my husband were surprised to see that a hunk (aprox. 5"/5") was gone from the tire!instead of a normal balancing, we had to replace the tire. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the recent firestone problems, but it looks like that part of the tire just came off. The rest of the tire is still in very good shape.i pride myself on being a good driver, especially with a 1 yr old, so i don't think i have driven the car excessively hard.we still have the tire, if that helps, or if you need to see it.though no accident occurred, i dread to think of what could havehappened, with maybe just a few more miles driven.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Although firestone is denying the problem with tires they have yet to recall, there is definatley a problem with other tires i have had to replace numerous tires sometimes only months after the tire is placed on the vehicle please do something about this horrible problem (tiresize: p265/75/r1)( dot number: tire size: p265/75/r1 )

Two tires with quarter size blister on each with steel protruding from each. There is approximately a 1/4" of tread. These blisters are not worn portions of the tires. They are protruding from otherwise aparently tires in good condition. Each blister is symetrically located to one and other on each tire. Only response from firestone was a canned response about their p235 recall.( dot number: w29v ata tire size: p265/75r15 )

We have a police report and an engineer's report detailing the failure of the tire.the failure caused a rollover accident resulting in a spinal fusion for the other occupant, brad west, who was driving the vehicle with myself as passenger.firestone was contacted and a lengthy arbitration process resulted in them settling with us out of court.they contended that the incident was an isolated one.as we see now, that is not the truth.we will be happy to forward the reports in this case to help in any proceedings against firestone.( dot number: 1pb 355 tire size: p235/75r15 )

The tire family on a family trip to florida. We were traveling down the expressway at about 65mph when the car started a strange vibration.we pulled over and inspected the car and tires. Nothing was apparent.approximately 10 miles later, the vibration intensified and the tire tread separated form the tire and flew under the car, making a loud noise.,we were in the right lane and managed to pull off to the side of the road.you could see tire tread flying in the air from the car in the rearview mirror.when we stopped the rim of the tire was practically on the ground and a huge strip of tread was missing.very scarry! other tires were fine.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

My ford explorer limited awd v-8 started to shake and bounce while i was driving near my house in mililani hawaii.i immediately drove it to the nearest tire dealer, goodyear auto service center in mililani hawaii and spoke with the general manager.he inspected my vehicle tires and determined that i had experienced "premature" tread belt separation and advised that i not operate the vehicle until all affected tires were replaced.he stated that operation of my vehicle w/o replacing the affected tires would result in total tire failure which could expose the driver and passenger(s) to harm, injury or death.as such, i complied with his recommendation that the affected tires be replaced.this took place approximately two months before firestone recalled all firestone radial atx tires two weeks ago.i would like to note that firestone did in fact send me a recall notice (unsolicited) but that the recall date is between jan. 01, 2000 and august 9, 2000. Although not required by law, i feel that they should expand their "recall" to include any customer that can show documented proof that they had replaced their firestone radial atx p235/75r15 tires due to tread belt separation.thank you, wallace choy( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

In the summer of 1998 (july-august) i had three tire failures.the first tire located on the right rear failed traveling 65 miles per hour on i-75.the tread separated leaving the core inflated. I lost traction on the wheel and the vehicle became hard to control as it when off the road.i was able to stop the broncoand change the tire and continue driving.the second failure occurred when my wife was driving on the left rear a week later on i-4 at 65 miles per hour, the tire separated and deflated and caused about $500.00damage to the left rear quarter panel.the next weekon i-75 the vehicle became unstable and hard to control i stopped the bronco and found the right left rear tire was starting to separate and changed to tire out.i asked my firestone dealer at that time what they thought the problem was with the tires and was told that it was probably the age of the tires.i replaced all the tires on the bronco and kept one of the old atx tires as a spare on 08/13/1998.( dot number: vd60at4493 tire size: 31x1050r15 )

This tire was installed on a boat trailer in 1990, when driving to the coast on 7/25/2000, going 55 miles per hour, we noticed a sudden irregular feeling to the trailer.this was a single axle boat trailer, hauling a 16 foot dory boat.when checking the bearings before launcihng the boat into the water,(@ 30 minutes after feeling the irregularity) the tire was discovered to be missing almost its entire top layer.it was still holding air pressure.at the time we thought that we had run over something that had cut evenly into the tire, on both sides that peeled the cap.we considered ourselves lucky that worse did not happen.we did not think anything else of it until the recall of firestone tires.it is not on the current list, and was purchased 10 years ago, but being it came from the suspect plant, this problem may be deeper than currently known.we still have the tire and rim, if anyone is interested in pursueing this further.( dot number: vdm5ie7083 tire size: p195/75r15 )

I was driving east on i-10 25 miles east of beaumont, tx approx 3:00pm at approximately 60 mph when the thread on the left rear tire separated from the casing.the thread come off with such force that it ripped off the running board, ripped out two tailpipes at the muffler and severely dented the left reaf fender.the carcass did not deflate and we were able to pull over and change the tire to the spare. We purchased another spare locally and returned home.we repaired the running board and replaced the muffler and purchased a new firestone atx tire (received $15.00 credit from firestone for our troubles).the next day we tried to resume our trip and again on i-10 at lagrange, tx at approx 10:00amat approx 60mph we felt a severe vibrationand immediately pulled over.the tire thread on the right rear tire was beginiing to separate from the casing, but had not come completely off.we limped 7 miles to a goodyear dealer and replaced the tire. On the first incident one of the tires was in pretty bad shape and ready to explode, it caused my car to be misaligned. During the alignment they discovered the defect and replace the tire for the same type. On the second incident the tire peeled-off while i was driving on the freeway at 65mph. I was lucky to being able to control the car and pull to the side, but it was very scary and i almost crashed. At that time i was driving with my wife (pregnant 6 months) and my 3 year old son. August 20, 2000on november 12th, 1999 i purchased a 1994 ford explorer eddie bauer which is equipped with firestone radial atx, p235/75r15 m+s, dot # vnhl- 1mo tires.i do not drive that fast in the winter, but this spring i noticed that every time when i went to speed up to 55, 60 or 65, the explorer would start to shake real bad.bear in mind that these speeds are on the highway or ny thruway. In june i took my explorer to wal-mart tire & lube express to have my tires balanced and found out that i had three good tires and one bad one.this was way before the recall notices in the papers.wal-mart balanced my tires for nothing that day, explaining that my tires were the problem.on july 1, 2000, i went back to wal-mart and had them replace the two back firestone radial atx's with goodyear all season tracker tires.i have the firestone radial atx p235/75r15 dot # vnhl-1mo's, which wal-mart took off.i have been reading the news paper and listening to the news stations about the recall on the firestone tires and my firestone radial atx, p235/75r15, dot # vnhl-1mo are not on the list.i'm not every happy about it and don't feel 100% percent comfortable that those tires are on my explorer.i also have a spare for my explorer that is a firestone radial atx, p235/75r15 m+s, dot # vnhl - 1mo.i would every much like to have my remaining firestone radial atx, p235/75r15 tires taken care of because there is a little vibration remaining; also, because i drive and hour to and from work.there is a lot of tread remaining on these tires and seems a shame that they are failing this way.i know that firestone will reimburse you only up to four tries but what about the fifth tire which is a spare tire, should be included in the recall reimbursement too.sincerely mary ann hughes 160 east north st. Right rear tire of explorer blew out on ny thruway near albany after two hours of high speed driving in circa mid-september 1994.less than 6,000 miles on car and tires.blew out without warning; no object struck.no loss of control and no injury to driver.tire replaced by firestone with approx. 90% credit for unused tread life.dealer said underinflation might have caused overheating internally (although other tires were properly inflated).( dot number: tire size: p235/75 r1 )

I have a 1994 ford explorer that i am not driving any more because both of the rear tires blew while driving exactly as they showed on the news report last night concerning firestone recalling 20 million radial atx tires. The first time was at night driving on the highway with my wife and both children in the car, who at that time where 1 and 5. The second time i was on my way back fron out of town alone. Both times it took all i had to stop the vehicle from turning over. The first time this happend i had to send the destroyed tire back to firestone for they to examine. The second time i was asked to do the same thing but the firestone dealer lost the tire. I do have pictures however of both tires and the damage they caused. Even thought i did not have the tire the second time firestone paid for all the damages both times. To hear of the 46 possiblle deaths is very disturbing to me to think of my children where in the car the first time. After the second time it happend i refused to drive the car anymore even though it is a company vehicle and part of my salary, i decided to come out of pocket and buy myself a vehicle, something without firestone tires on it. Please let me know if i can be of any help during your investigation of these tire or what i should do next. Firestone puts out a very dangerous product and i will never be a customer of theirs again, and i probably wont be of ford either for using such a poor quality product. Thank yougeoff mules jr.v. P. 1993 eddie bauer bronco right front tire blew out.when the tire blewout the consumer lost control o the vehicle and ended up in a shallow ditch.the consumer was able to get the vehicle back on the road and put the spare tire on.the remaining tires were driven another 10000 miles then removed due to bulges in the sidewall.the tires were t hen stored in the consumer's shed. The consumer received a recall on the tire and contacted the manufacturer.the consumer was told to take the tire to the tire dealer and have the tire sent to them.the consumer received a letter from the manufacturer stating that the tires were no longer under warranty because they weren't on the truck.

This incident almost resulted in five fatality please check into thisas well as damage to my vehicle. No safety defect listed in summary.( dot number: tire size: 335/75/15 )

One tire was constantly low from time of purchase.complained to 2 ford dealerships and tire company but no one could find a problem with tire.i put air in the tire weekly for 3 years and had tires rotated every 3.000 miles. Tires were in good condition except for slow leak in the one in question. Tire pressure was kept at approx. 30lbs or higher never below.while driving on i-80 over sierra from reno to sacramento the car began to shake.vibrate.intensely so lowered speed fom 60mph to 40mph for 2 hours until finding surbuban fordin sac. The service manager drove the car and said it was too dangerous to continue driving but he could not find the problem.finally on the lift he said there was problem with tire so he changed it.next day at firestone service center i was told by manage that the tire separated. He replaced the tire with same make and charged me 37.00.in january 2000 another tire separated and i again bought a new tire for 67.00.it also separated.i'm advising of this info to help others regarding the issue of tire inflation.firestone continues to blame the consumer but we inflated our tires to at least 30.there is an obvious defect in the tires.all this info is documented should someone require it regarding a serious injury.i was very very lucky so i hope this helps someone who was not as fortunate .( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

Tire tread blew off while driving on straight road at about 35mph. Some tread remained hanging off the tire. Tire was still inflated. Was original tires for the vehicle. Rotation occurred at about the proper intervals. Decided to replace both rear tires at the time. New tires placed on front of vehicle. Old front tires (still firestone atx) were moved to the rear. My problem sounded exactly like those being reported on the news, so i thought that i better report it. When it happened i just attributed it to old age and did not think it might be part of an overall problem. I suspect there are many more cases like this out there. At approximately 22,000 miles, both rear tires experienced separation of the tread.the separation in each instance consisted of a six inch by eighteen inch section flying off the tire.the tread separated to the extent that the metal cords were exposed.obviously, the vehicle chattered and shuddered noticably until the tires were replaced.i did not want to chance additional separation, so i replaced the other tires at the same time.the broker through whom my mechanic purchased the tires said there was nothing they could do.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r )

The tire in question shed a large lump of tread while driving at speed on the interstate over memorial weekend 1999.the ford explorer was carrying two children (one year and seven years old) and the two month pregnant driver (aged 32).a loud 'thump' was heard from the rear, followed by a scraping sound (presumably as the tread caught around the wheel arch).the tire shows signs of the shed tread having rubbed against the rest of the tire as it continued to revolve with the tread caught in the wheel arch.the following week firestone was contacted and expressed no concern whatsoever, saying that the tire had probably hit something in the road or been previously curbed, causing the tread shed.the tire, and others on the vehicle, were replaced (with the latest version of the same tire type), at the driver's expense.i was most concerned when i now learn of a recall on all such tires and contacted firestone on the freephone number.i was not satisfied with the 'standard' replacement answer, as i still had this tire in my possession.i was given various other number to call within the company, but received nothing more than the standard "take it to the dealer for replacement" answer.i feel that firestone should at very least have volunteered to recover the tire and analyze this example for their records.i therefore contacted nhtsa for their advice and have been sent a label for return of the tire.this tire did not actually burst in this incident, but from the condition it was in on removal, was very close to that point.had firestone treated this case seriously at the time, deaths and serious injuries could have been avoided.( dot number: vdhl1pm126 tire size: p235/75r15 )

While enroute to vacation on the coast of south carolina, our explorer had a blowout approximately 40 miles from charleston on i-26.the tire was only 4-6 months old with excellent treads, we had to get two new firestones installed at sonny's tire & alignment in summerville, sc. Because the blowout of the tired occurred on the left rear of the explorer, my wife, who was driving at the time, was able to maintain control on the interstate until we could pull off onto the safety lane.at the time, we did not realize that this was not an isolated incident and we did not report the blowout.the firm in summerville that installed the new tires stated that the blowoit had occurred due to tire failure from tread separation and not from running over a foreig object.the blowout occurred on the side of the tire.we still have the mate to the tire that blew out , since it was mounted underneath the caras a spare.it is available for inspection if needed.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

This is just to let you know that the reimbursement program that firestone announced 08/15/2000 they are only allowing reimbursement for tires replaced from 08/09/2000 to 08/16/2000. Even though the program was only announced 1 day prior to the end date. This doesn't seem quite fair.( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

Quote from police report : "investigation at the scene showed that the right rear tire of vehicle #1 lost tread and blew, causing this accident". Spontaneous blowout left rear tire due to delamination of tread and inner sidewall.inspection showed major identical damage on right rear also.both tires replaced at owner expense.firestone recall limits reimbursement to tires replaced after jan. 1, 2000. I just discovered that my 1999 ford ranger 4x4 off-road pickup, which was factory equipped with 16" tires, has a 15" spare.the engineers at ford have decided that mismatching tire sizes poses no adverse driving conditions for consumers.i feel that emergency handling with a 15" spare mounted on the front of my vehicle would be a challenge and potentially dangerous.i doubt that any tire manufacturers would recommend or support this practice. What did the dealership or ford motor company do when i brought this matter to their attention, you ask? absolutely nothing!it would be very interesting to see the results from some independent test conducted by a consumer group or from any tests that ford may have performed.could this be another recall in the making?i hope so, as i think that under certain conditions, driving a vehicle in this configuration could be very dangerous!this is not limited to the 1999 model year.ford has done this on the 2000, 2001 and is still doing it on their 2002 rangers equipped with 16 tires.apparently ford has no problem aggressively marketing and upgrading the standard 15 tires to optional 16 tires.they just dont see any need to upgrade the spare.i strongly disagree with fords attitude, as i see a real problem with driving mismatched tires even temporarily, and especially on the front of my vehicle. I complained to ford when center console area vibrated significantly anywhere from 65 miles per hour to 75 miles per hour.it was at its worst at about 72-73 miles per hour.i was unable to use the cd player installed (by ford) in the compartment between the driver and passenger seats.ford blamed the problem on the tires and had me go to a tire shop to have them replaced.this happened in 1997!the tire shop (don olson tires) claimed there was a suspension problem with the ford explorers and it would happen again.they replaced the tires with new firestone radial atxs.we realigned the vehicle and the problem seemed to go away.after about six months, the problem came back (not as severe).i continued to have the vehicle realigned about every 4 months.unfortunately, as the tires got older, the problem got worse.i continued the balancing of the tires and realignment process often.august 15, 2000 while driving with my family, we had a tread separation of the radial atx tires.they had about 35000-40000 miles on them.they were replaced by the firestone "firehawk" tires (not the recall ones).i had the vehicle realigned again.i still have a problem with the center console area shaking.it seems to be worse at about the same 72-73 miles per hour.ford has never claimed any responsibility.i haven't asked them for their opinion since the first time i approached them (in 1997), they blamed the tires.it appears to me as if it is a ford explorer problem as much as a firestone tire problem.please research this if possible and have ford reevaluate their position on this issue.please advise me if you need any more information as i will be happy to discuss it with you.my office phone number is 305-526-1215.thank you for listening.brian fields( dot number: tire size: 235/75/15 )

In the month of january i was on a return trip from orlando, florida and on my way to tallahassee, florida home.approximately 60 miles north of orlando i began to experience a vibration in the vehicle that i was driving ( 1996 ford explorer ).i was traveling at 60 mph and as i continued to decrease in speed the vibration increased and before i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop i felt a large bang in the left rear of the vehicle as if the tire blew, the vehicle began to swerve back and forth to the left and to the right, i was able to get the vehicle under control nearly missing another vehicle.i replaced the tire with the spare that was on the vehicle and made it to tallahassee.during the duration of the drive to tallahassee i observed the performance of the remaining tire on the vehicle.my conclusion when i arrived in tallahassee was that i did not feel that the tires on the vehicle were safe and would not bet my families life them so i had them replaced.within the next week i had four of the five tires replaced on the vehicle, the spare still remains under the vehicle until such time this matter is resolved.to my surprise on august 8, 2000 i heard rumors that the tire of the same brand and make "firestone radial atx" series may be recalled.however there was substantial damage to the vehicle from the steel belted radial that tore away from the wheel itself causing damage to the vehicle and almost my life from the tire in question.i feel that it would not be unreasonable to be reimbursed for the tires that i replaced and the damage to my vehicle. I would appreciate a reply to the matter at hand.( dot number: tire size: p235r15 )

We were driving back from mammoth through the mojave desert on weekend of june 22, 2000.we stopped for lunch in bishop california and when we returned to our car we had a flat tire.we called aaa and the tow truck driver took us to the only station in town that was open of a sunday afternoon.when they looked at the tire they noticed that instead of a puncture in the tire that caused the flat a top layer of the tire had peeled away and wires were exposed.i guess this is the deglazing effect that is occuring with the firestone atx radials. The station did not have the atx tires we originally had so we replaced the flat with the wilderness tires.we had to replace both tires so they would match.the temperature that day that we were traveling was approximately 100 degrees.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I am a current owner of a 1993 ford explorer sport.as you know there is a nationwide recall on specific firestone/ford tires.on may 6th 2000, i was involved in an accident directly related to the defective tires, heading east-bound on interstate 4 (i-4) from tampa, fl to orlando, fl.i was traveling about 60mph in the far left lane, near exit 16, as my tire tread ripped/peeled off of my rear tire (driver side), causing me to loose total control, nearly flip over, completely spin out into the median and stop feet away from oncoming traffic (i-4 westbound).my tire was not flat after the incident, although the tread on the tire was nearly ripped off.due to the tread ripping off and flapping, there was extensive damage to the rear panel of my truck.(the debris in the median damaged my muffler and tail pipe as well). It is apparent that this was more than a close call, i realize that this was a near fatal accident.besides my being blessed, the only reason that i could create of why i am still here today, is due to the width of the median.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

On the above date i was returning from jacksonville on i-95 southbound when the tread separated from the carcas on my left rear tire.the tread took out part of the lower left rear quarter panel when it came off.i fishtailed but managed to come to a safe stop, and no further damage ensued.these tires were original equipment on my suv when i bought it.all four tires on the ground were rotated according to manufacturer's specs by a local tire kingdom on 12/03/1999.they felt out-of-round on the trip back.i had the four tires on the ground replaced with goodyear tires on 04/25/2000.i still have the original spare.firestone has not been cooperative in my efforts to be reimbursed.please feel free to contact me by phone or email for further information.(dot number: unknowntiresize: p235/75r15)

When we took the flat tire to our mechanic after we got home to wisconsin, to have it fixed, he said it could not be repaired because the tread had separated. We had to buy a new tire. It was hot (in the 80s) in montana during our trip there and, prior to the flat, we had driven several hundred miles at speeds of 70-75 mph, including driving over a high pass on the idaho border and driving for many miles on unpaved roads.we have not had any further problems, though we do have 4 of the recalled tires currently on our explorer. Please note, we bought the explorer used (4 years old), containing four new tires (the recalled models) installed by the dealer.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

As my wife was driving on the freeway at approx. 60 mph, the left rear tire treadpeeled off a chunck of tread. She was able to pull off the freeway, where i was called to change it with my spare, which is a bridgestone( dot number: 19681 tire size: p20575r15 )

Although i mentioned to my mechanic that it seemed "odd" that the tread hadn't worn down but beause of the separation the tires all had to be replaced.this was done before the recall therefore dot info is not available as the tires have been disposed of. Also, it is unfortunate that the size of my tires is not included in the recall. I'm filing this report to add to data that this tire also was defective.( dot number: unknown tire size: p255/70r16 )

On 03/14/00, while driving northboundon interstate 75 in sarasota, fl (mile marker 211) at a speed of 70mph, my right rear tire blew causing the vehicle to pull sharply to the left off of the main road.the explorer flipped end over end approximately 6 times before settling upright.upon viewing the damaged vehicle, it was obvious that the initial tire failure was caused by a total separation of the tire tread from the sidewall of the tire.a police report is on file and all necessary insurance information, including photographs are available.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

1/2 of the tread came off at 70 mph causing loss of control of vehicle( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

As i was driving northbound on i25 between albuquerque and santa fe nm, i felt my explorer start shaking and then there was a very loud pop and i saw something fly past me.i managed to get to the side of the interstate and got out to see if i could discover what happened.i found the tread of the left rear tire had come off.part of the tread was wrapped around the axle.the tire did not blowout.luckily i was not injured, only very very scared! the running board on the vehicle was completely ripped off and gone, both left doors are damaged, there is damage to the quarter panel, and to the tail gate.i filed a claim with firestone on 5/10/00 and sent in 3 estimates of $3,000; so far i seem to be getting the runaround.when i was getting my estimates, i was told this is becoming "normal" for firestone tires and explorers and to count myself among the few not injured. Thank you.( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

One year ago on august 22,1999, while driving on the sam houston tollway near greenspoint drive in houston, texas at a speed of 65 mph, an 8 inch long piece of the tire tread on my right rear tire separated from the tire.i did not suffer a blowout and was able to safely change the tire and continue home.the following day i purchased 4 brand new michelin radial tires at ntb.i did not report this tread failure to firestone or the ford dealership at the time since i was unaware that other explorer drivers were experiencing similar tread failures.after reading recent reports about firestone atx tire tread failures in usa today i decided to send this e-mail so that my experience can be documented and included in your statistics.i did not keep the damaged tire nor do i have any photographs of the tread failure.i consider myself lucky that the tire did not blow out and i did not suffer the same fatal consequences as other ford explorer drivers.while driving down the highway i could feel an extreme bumpiness before the piece of tread let loose with a loud "pow" and a cloud of dust and rubber in my rear view mirror.hopefully my experience will have some value in your investigation, and i would be happy to discuss my experience with you further.- charlie curtins( dot number: ? tire size: p235/75r15 )

The tire tread on two of my four tires began to separate to the point that the steel cords were showing through.small pieces of rubber were missing and other pieces were loose and ready to seperate.the condition was noticed during normal tire rotation after a trip during very hot weather.this is the second set of tires that have failed.another set was replaced for the same condition 2 years ago.both times after the hot summer months.my family and i are very fortunate the tread did not seperate while we were towing through the mountains and the condition noted during normal tire rotation.i would also like to add that the tires are checked frequently for proper air inflation and condition.thank you.( dot number: tire size: p23575sr15 )
