While driving along slowly, the steering wheel began to shake & vibrate uncontrollably.i pulled into the median attempting to get out of traffic & then discovered steering was slow & lethargic.while attempting to pull out of traffic & into a parking lot, i heard a loud "pop."i got out of the car & discovered the tie rod separated entirely from the right front wheel & slashed the inner tire wheel (resulting in the flat). All 4 tires on vehicle were cracked wheretread met the casings. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated thattires were cracked.
Driving on interstate and tire fell apart.when the tread separated the tire itself remained inflated.
Dot # reported above is for another tire in the original equipment set of 5, not the failed tire. While traveling 55 mph on freeway, tire blew out for no apparent reason. I was able to steer safely off the highway on an exit ramp and change the tire. When i took the tire to a dealer (big o tires), the mechanic could give me no explanation for the blow out. All remaining tires were properly inflated and in acceptable condition.( dot number: vnfc1pr126 tire size: p225/70r14 )
Firestone fr480 p225/70r14 40000 miles.left rear tire experienced tread separation and catastrophic failure.
Purchased vehicle on 3/10/2000 mileage on vehicle 37,410. On may 21, 2000 while driving on highway 99 at approximately 67-70 mph at approximately 1:30 in the afternoon my front tire shred. This resulted in approx 1,700 worth of damage to my vehicle. On july 20 while traveling on highway 152 at approximately 65-67 mph the rear tire shred, resulting in loss of control of the vehicle and ultimately our vehicle rolling over. Both of these tires were firestone fr480's. My lawyer is retaining the vehicle at this time and it still has two of these defective tires on it.please reconsider your recall list, as i do not think it is complete.( dot number: tire size: 225/70r15 )
While driving at 70mph in right lane on rural highway, i heard a thud and immediately lost control of the truck and was thrown into the left lane almost over the center line.i regained control of the truck and stopped on the side of the road.the tread on the driver back tire was completely peeled off, but the tire had not deflated.the back truck fender and fender guard was completely bent underneath the truck.the fender and guard in front of the tire was bent outward, with the support frame broken and the fender gueard sticking at a 90 degree angle out from the truck.when i took the tire off the truck, the entire tread was wrapped 3 times around the axle.both back tires and the spare are the same firestones.on inspection of the other back tire, we have found cracks in the sidewall both near the center, as well as cracks near the tread along most of the tire. Tire failure 8-21-91, 302 miles, 26 psi, right rear, flat tire in parking lot.mitchell tire service in anaheim ca put air in tire & discover a pin hole leak in sidewall. He then dismounted tire to look for hole inside tire. No hole found inside tire,& told me the belt was seperating.he told me that since it was a sport ute, it was not covered under firestones warranty, i had to purchase another tire. I managed to get firestone factory to pay me back for failed tire. Tire failure #2,1-11-92, 4,000 miles, 32 psi, left rear, tire flat in driveway. Firestone dealer in el toro, caput air in the tire & discovered a pin hole leak. He said i had to purchase another tire since it wasn't covered by warranty. I tried to get firestone factory to replace tire, but they refused. So i purchased a goodyear wrangler. Tire failure #3,1-25-92, 7,912 miles, 32 psi, left rear, tire started to vibrate on south bound 5 freeway in irvine. Mark c bloom, in el toro, caspun the tire up on their balancing machine, & then advised me that the tire was severely out of round, a condition caused by the tire starting to seperate,so i purchased a goodyear wrangler.i still have the original fr480 spare. The first two letters of the dot code are w2.the (3) fr480 tires that failed may have had same designation, but i don't know for sure.note: i have had no problems with goodyear tires on any of the(3) sets i have purchased! note: as i listened to jacques nassers testimony, something was mentioned which jarred my memory. Rep billy tauzin asked him about hotline document# 71 pg# 3 dated 8-19-96, which stated that a ford dealer had 16 explorers he couldnt balance the tires on. Well, i had the same problem!mills ford rebalanced my tires at least 3 times in the first 3000 miles. But it didnt helphowever, after the failed firestone tires were replaced. When i purchased the car new, it had a real hard pull to right. I took it back to the dealer to check out. They aligned the front end , still hard pull . They sent me to the same firestone dealer. They said it was in the alignment (11,200mi) after the alignment($100) the mechanic put back on rack to rotate tires , i would not agree to that, so i went totire america to buy new tires,(michelin) and the hard pull went away. So firestone has made junk tires for sometime!! i don't want nothing from firestone!! they wouldn't help when they should have!!!don't think that i am just jumping on the band wagon, just want to tell my side of the story, ford and firestone wouldn't listen. The contact owns a 1993 ford ranger pickup equipped with firestone fr480, size: 215/70/r14. While driving 25 mph, the front driver's side tire blew out and the tread separated from the tire. I check my tire pressure regularly since i bought this truck used with 15,000 miles on it i had the tires rotated a month ago or so.i have 40,000 on the truck now.the left rear firestone tire shredded like a potato peel .it damged my rear fender when it peeled back.i recently had helped a motorist with a flat tire on the highway.the vehicle was a ford ranger with firestone tires.the tire damge looked identicle to my tire damage.i believe firestone has more bad tires out there than their saying.are my tires recalled i don't believe this is a coincidence.i want my tires replaced and my truck fixed. Pe00-020;while driving about 60 mph left rear tire had a blowout. Then, a tread separation occurred.however, consumer kept control of vehicle. Ford, ranger 1997, firestone, fr480, p225/70r14.
Two tires have an unusual bulge on the inside about 0.25 in wide, 0.125 in tall, running across from rim to rim.i believe this was the source of the incredible grinding noises.i thought the brakes were bad, so i had them rebuilt, but the only way to eliminate the noise and dragging effects was to replace the tires. (dot number: st3231tiresize: p215/70r14)
First tire failure was a blow out at about 70 mph.second tire failure was broken steel belts. The tire was remove before total failure.the two rear tires were replaced when it was noticed that the tread was starting to separate along the edges of the tire.this all took place between late may and early august (the warm months). Yesterday i was driving 60mph down hwy 59 in houston and heard this awful noise like i ran over something. Luckily i was able to get quickly over to the shoulder. Sure enough the back left tire, a firestone 235/75/15 fr480 (same size as the recall, but different firestone) tire peeled off the belts. It looked like it was about to pop and i don't know how it did not. It did some damage to my vehicle also. I went to a firestone shop and he wants to just sell me new tires...not even replace the blowout!!!he did give me an 800 number for the damage. Purchased the car used with 19000 miles. The original spare was new when the second set of tires were needed. Went to firestone and said sell me 3 new ones just like the spare. After about half the life of the tires or more, i was driving down the interstate at 70mph on 11-14-98 at 3:00 am in the morning going goose hunting with my two boys. All the tread completetly peeled off the right rear tire and i fishtailed down the interstate. Luckliy nobody else was on the road. The tire did not blow out and still had air in it when i got stopped. I changed the spare in the dark with a flashlight and went on. The next day i went to firestone and had the tire adjusted. The next following day i noticed the tire had badly damaged the fenderwell above that tire. Went back to firestone and complained why they didnt tell me and requsted they fix it.they first told me nothing could be done without thedamaged tire which theysuppossedly threw away.i choose not to fix the damage immediately. About a month and a half later a large bubble appeared on the front left tire (one of the three purchased with the second set) where the tread was starting to separate. I took this tire to firestone(same place) and also paid to have it adjusted. After threating to sue for previous damage they referred me to the manufacture in ohio (i think it could have been illinois). I took that tire home. After several disscussions with the manufacture i received a complaint form got 3 estimates on the previous damage and shipped the second tire to them.in may of 99 they paid an adjusted claim of about $1200.00.within a few weeks of that payment the third tire of (3) lost a large piece ofits tread. Luckily it broke off and hit underneath the car and didn't do any damage. I paid to have this tire adjusted also. I also still have this tire. Just wanted to complain and encourage this brand to be recalled. Haven't had any problems with the adjusted ones yet, but worry about them with the recent recall
Tire separation occured on interstate 66, va.i did not lose control of the vehicle, because i was driving within the speed limit.however, the noise from tire separation caused some emotional stress.these tires are identical to "original equipment" when i purchased the vehicle.i would like to know if there have been any reported incidents with these tires, or possible recall. As i was driving east on state route 410 east the right rear tire blew the tread off about 3/4 of the way around the tire. This tire was my spare and had been rotated on to my van about 18 moths ago. It was almost brand new then it still had the little rubber nubs on it from being new. It is estimated that this tire had less than 8000 miles on it. When the tread cam off it knocked the exhaust pipe up into the fender and the tread then wrapped itself around my suspension. I ws unable to read the dot code on the tire because of the damage. My fender is pushed out and i have a hole in my exhaut pipe from this incident. Fortunately it did not completely blow out. I still have the tire and the tread that came off of it. I can if necessary have the person who helped me on the roadside write a statement of what he had to do to get me back on the road again.
Tire seperated completely from rim at high speed. Tire pressure was correct as the car had completed a dealer maintence servicing approx. One week prior to the incident. Blowout believed to be caused by a defective tire.( dot number: tire size: 225x70rx14 )

A 1.5ft piece of tread separated from the tire as i was driving on i 5 north of los angeles.this separation caused a loud pounding.i was able to reach the right side of the freeway and i investigated the cause of the noise.the left rear tire was still inflated and the 1.5 ft tread that still attached to the tire was about 4 to 5 inches wide.by the time i was able to stop, the piece of tread had damaged to rear quarter panal and molding and also knocked off the mud guard. I have suffered two complete tread separations on two firestone fr480 tires, size 235/75r15xl. These were replacement equipment on my 1996 ford econoline 150 custom van. Both were rear mounted at the time of failure and had appropriate inflation presuure (around 38 psi). Both failures occured on interstate at moderate speeds (60 - 65 mph) in the evening after the heat of the day. First failure occured 10/21/1999. The second failure occured 7/25/00. I went to purchase new tires for my ranger for the upcoming winter. The service rep went to get my vehicle and tire information, and informed me that the treads on my tires were beginning to separate. He then showed me what he was talking about and it was the same condition they had said to watch for on dateline on nbc. He then told me to take the tires to firestone and show them, the firestone dealership stated it was normal wear, even though you can lift the tread up from the tire. No accident occurred with these tires. I just want to inform you i have a diiferent make of firestones that are starting to experience tread seperation. While driving on i-35 near norman oklahoma in my recently acquired 1990, ford bronco ii, the tread on my right front tire completely seperated .the incident came completely unexpected, with no prior warning whatsoever.fortunately, i was only driving 60 mph, and was able to keep the vehicle under control.however, the seperated tire tread put a significant dent in the right front quarter panel before i was able to stop the vehicle.this tire had good, thick tread, and because it was not one of the types in firestone's recent recall, i believed it to be safe.because i bought this vehicle used, i do not have receipts for the two front matching firestone tires on the vehicle. I took the tire to a firestone dealer here in norman, and the manager simply insisted that i must have hit something in the road or that the tire was underinflated.....i attest most certainly that neither was the case.to be honest, i am mostly just happy that i didn'thave an accident as a result of this tire failure. However, i think your organization should take this as evidence that firestone's recall should definately be broadened.it simply baffels me that this companies products contnue to put peoples lives in jeopardy, and yet they refuse to act truly responsibly and recall all the faulty tires.i have retained both tires as well as photos of the tires and the damage to my vehicle.( dot number: w2ul1ml489 tire size: p205/75r15 )
