My accident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. On 24 july 2000 as i was driving to my residence located at [xxx], in my 1998 ford eddie bauer explorer. I was traveling east on highway 190 in the right hand lane at 60 mph, when a car pulled in front of the truck i was following.the truck braked causing me to brake.uponbraking, both tires on the left hand side of the vehicle exploded causing me to go into a tail spin. I did everything possible to keep the vehicle on the road without hitting anyone else.fortunately, i did not hit another vehicle or hurt anyone else.my vehicle ended up rolling over four times and ended up facing in the opposite direction on the median.although the vehicle was completely totaled, i was fortunate enough not to have suffered life threatening injuries.the police, paramedics, and firemen arriving on the scene could not believe that i was alive.the vehicle had to be cut to get me out. There were witnesses to this accident who provided statements to the police.there was no citation issued.my right hand was badly cut, i had severed an artery and muscle, and received 12 stitches.my left ear was cut and had to be stitched. The left side of my body, to include my head, was badly bruised. This accident has had a serious physiological effect on me.it took two weeks for me to begin driving again.usaa, my insurance company, informed us, as a result of their investigation, that they had flagged my vehicle because the tires were the firestone tires being recalled and were found at fault for causing my accident.since purchasing my vehicle brand new in may 1998, it has been regularly serviced in accordance with the service manual, by cove ford in copperas cove, texas. Wheels have also been rotated on a regular basis.at no time was i informed that my tires were unsafe or were the cause of previous accidents.had i of been informed by the ford motor company of possible tires.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(

Accident occurred in the afternoon of august 28th, 1999 in durham, north carolina.the accident involved my vehicle hitting a vehicle in front of me (i was travelling at about 35-45 mph and reached an intersection where traffic was stopped for the light.i hit the brakes and thought i had enough time to stop the vehicle, but i ended up rear-ending a truck (at the point of impact the car was probably travelling 5-10 mph)).anyhow when i received my car from the repair shop it rode extremely roughly.after taking it to a firestone dealer they informed me that my tread had 'separated' and told me the only solution was to buy new tires.this is all very circumstancial evidence (i realize), but after reading about other similar incidents regarding the same equipment, i felt compelled to report this accident as well in case the tire too were responsible.the faulty tires (2 of 4) have since been discarded.i would appreciate knowing whether the tire separation could have been related to the accident as i know think it may have (the tire's tread was not separated prior to the accident and the other tires which had been purchased at the same time are still roadworthy).( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I was driving about 60 mph, when the i heard a pop, i lost control of the vehicle and rolled over once and i landed upsided down.there was 2 other people besides me in the vehicle.we were all wearing are seatbelts and nothing happen to us.everyday i thank god i did not have my two girls with me at the time of the accident.we were not hurt, but we were sure terrified.( dot number: )

While driving on 93 south, a majormassachusetts highway, at 55 miles an hour on 11-1998, i swerved to avoid hitting a car that was going to come into my lane.my suv felt like it was going to tip over on its side.it felt like i was riding on two wheels.had i not been calm and steered correctly, the suv would have tipped over on its side.the second time, 8-2000 was on 95 south, in massachusetts.upon getting off the exit ramp, my suv again felt like it would tip over. I was going about 25 miles an hour.both times the sway bar links had to be replaced.i was charged for the first repair.i have replaced the five original tires which were part of the recent recall, with the same type of tire about a year ago.the cid sensor is a part that should last the life of the suv, according to the mechanic that worked on it.it had to be replaced on my suv.( dot number: tire size: p235/75/15 )

We took our car in for an oil change and rotation and balancing of tires.we were told we had 4 good tires.when we left the store, i felt bumping in the tires.we got on the thruway and drove about 30 miles.when we returned, we saw the rubber had peeled off one of the tires and the core was showing.my husband took the car back to firestone.they disclaimed any repsonsibility for the tire peeling and had no clue why it would have happened.they tried to sell my husband a brand new tire with no pro-rating or anything.jerrywas angry and told them to put the spare on.in subsequent conversations with them, they repeatedly denied that their work had anything to do with it, even though they admitted the tech was new and had lumped all the tires together during rotation.we were furious and vowed not to return.a few days later, i mentioned it to the dealer we bought the car from and he got us a new tire in lieu of a $100 sales commission for bringing in another buyer.took it to firestone, they asked where we had got the tire and charged us to mount it.i called them on the phone and asked for an address for the firestone co. And he then reimbursed us the money he had charged to mount it.we're even more angry now because they acted as though they had never heard of such a thing and, yet, they apparently knew about this.we like to travel and are now afraid to go anywhere.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Vehicle experienced blow out of the (firestone atx p235-75r15) tire, which resulted in severe accident, vehicle overturned and occupants were ejected with severe injuries. *mjs

I was driving 70 mph on 4 lane hwy when i heard a loud noise at the rear of my car and the car pulled to my left.i looked in my side mirror and saw a piece of tire bouncing on the road.i thought i had a blowout but i still had control of my car so i pulled over to the side of the road and saw that the whole tread on my rear left tire had pulled away from the rest of the tire.it still was inflated so i drove to my office 4 miles away at 35 mph and had my mechanic put on the spare.i brought my car to osburn's tire center, inc. In morgan city, la. And troy osburn told me that he would order a replacement tire and call me when it came in.i got the tire changed out and was given a bill for the replacement tire for $ 99.98.i will scan a copy of the bill and email to you.i was upset that i had to pay $ 100.00 for the tire and i also sustained some damage to the car.i asked troy if i could get reimbursed for my damages and he told me he would find out and get back to me.he never got back to me and the next thing i know, i see that firestone is recalling my tires.i would like to get reimbursed for not only the cost of the tire but get reimbursed for my damages.i have spoken to troy at osburns since the recall and he told me he not a firestone dealer and had not known at the time what steps would be taken to get my tires replaced.i have tried numerous times calling firestones hotline but keep getting busy signal.i wanted to report this incident to you so that you would be informed.what should i do about this bill and if i am owed for damages that the tread caused to my bumper and side wall while the tread was spinning around inside the inside fender wall?these tires are replacement tires but i replaced the tires with the same tires i originally had installed on the vehicle.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Tire blew out while the vehicle was being driven, causing rear fender to come off partially. Yh

While driving to work on may 30, 2000, the firestone atx tire's outer surface split off from the rest of the tire.about 30% of the tread split from the tire resulting in damage to the rear wheel well body damage at the rear and tearing off plastic trim.this occurred on a particularly danagerous stretch of road through tijeras canyon east of albuquerque, new mexico.our son was fortunate to maintain control of the vehicle and get off the freeway to change the tire.when he took the tire to firestone tire at 9500 montgomery ne, albuquerque, nm 87111, tel: 505-293-4921, he was told he must buy a new tire and that he could mail the defective tire somewhere and then get part of it reimbursed.firestone implies that he must have been responsible for the damage.this tire and the four others on the explorer have been replaced this date with four new michelin tires.we want nothing more to do with firestone tires.the cost of replacing the tires was over $500 including tax, balancing, caps.firestone's recall and offer to replace tires of the same kind would be unacceptable to us.we have lost total confidence in this company.it is despicable that they have covered up the defects in their tires for this long and that people have lost their lives. They don't deserve to be in business.thank you for the opportunity to register our complaint. The timeim from the vehicle.casing.( dot number: vnhl p8 tire size: p235/75r15 )

I wanted to ensure that the death of my son and his girlfriend in a ford explorer, single vehicle accident involving blowout of the firsestone tire were included in the information you have on the investigation into the safety issue.their names were jonathan riley and kacey crowe.they were killed when the ford explorer with firestone atx tires flipped after the right front tire blew out on november 1, 1996.the ford explorer had approx. 60,000 miles on it and the original firestone atx tires had recently been replaced with new firestone atx tires a few months before the accident.i would like to receive information on the status of the investigation.( dot number: )

Took vehicle to firestone 48 hours prior to blowout for balance/rotate. Blow out occurred going 70 mph. Road tep was 113 degrees. Firestone told me on 7/23 it was due to improperly inflated tires. They checked tire pressure less than 48 hours prior. They viewed my tire and said since i did not have road hazard i needed to buy another one. I then asked about it's reliability and safety and they said the media was overreacting. Blowout caused minor body damamge. Had to replace wheel and tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I had been traveling on the interstate for approximately 40 miles when i noticed a vibration.i slowed from 65 mph to 60 mph.within the next mile or so, there was a loud bang and i was instantly going sideways.when i got the vehicle under control and stopped, i initally thought i had struck something on the road because all of my tires were still inflated.then someone who stopped to help me pointed out that i had lost all of the tread on the rear driver's tire.i believe it is significant to note that i had just had my tires rotated about a month prior at a tires plus store and they did not inform me of any problems with my tires.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Firestone stated that problem was unique, had never happened before and that there was no warranty on tire. They paid me $100 replacement cost. ( dot number: vo66 atx 4 )

Had 4 new oem firestone tires put on when i bought the truck in may 97. In jan 98, ~3000 miles later, i drove 12 hrs from fla to chapel hill, nc with 2 @15 minute stops to gas up. Took i-95 and ran 70-80mph the whole time. When i left the hwy for the last time, truck braking was very bad. All over the road. I did not lose control only becausd the off ramp was very long near my house and i took a l o n g time to stop. Scary. Tire was destroyed. Looked like someone took a grinder to about 1/6th of the tire, along the outside edge. The steel belt had bits of metal sticking out of it, the tread near the hand sized hole had peeled off the inner tire (but was still attached on the inside 2" or so) . What a mess.did i run over a land mine?i put it down as a fluke, but thought i shoudl report it now.( dot number: tire size: p235/r1570 )

Traveling interstate highway between florida and virginia my 1992 ford explorer started shaking violently. It felt like i was losing a wheel. I stopped and checked the wheels out and everything looked ok. We proceeded cautiously to our destination of abingdon, virginia. I ultimately took the vehicle to the firestone dealer in bristol, tn. And was told the steel belts had seperated and needed to replace the tires. There was 10/32 of tread still remaining on the tires when i had to replace them and had to pay 195.00. The tires had always been carefully maintained with proper inflation and rotated every 5000 miles. The tires were replaced with firestone atx tires and on 06/29/99 @ 34383 miles they were again replaced because of failure and this time wilderness at tires were used.( dot number: w2hl tire size: p235/75/15 )

Vehicle was being operated on us60 (freeway) in mesa az at approximately 60 mph in the center lane of a 3 lane roadway.all was normal with no vibrations.there was an instant bang with immediate onset of major vibrations and the vehicle pulled initially to the left and then back to the right.there was traffic to the left front and right rear at the time of the event.when traffic cleared the vehicle was pulled off to the right shoulder.the right rear tire had lost all but a 1 inch strip of the tread surface over the complete circumference of the tire.the tire still had air pressure and due to the shoulder hazard on the freeway, the vehicle was driven to the next exit where the tire was changed in a parking lot.there was obviously a very large piece of tire rubber that was thrown out into traffic and not recovered.it is fortunate that this was rather late hour with little traffic.had this event occurred during rush hour with solid traffic it would almost certainly have resulted in secondary damage or collateral accidents. Has this type of tire disintegration been a reported hazard for this type of tire in the past ?this mishap was reported to the firestone tire co. And they requested that the tire be returned to bfts,1515 elm hill pike #405,nashville, tn.37210-3615;case # [xxx].the tire was shipped via ups on 08/04/99,package id: [xxx],tracking ref: [xxx].( dot number: vnhl1pm474 tire size: 23575r15xl )information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

In june of 1998 i was preparing for a vacation and my mechanic said that i needed two tires because the tread had seperated from the sidewall and they were unsafe. Upon my exam, he was correct. I just replaced them and wrote it off as bad luck. Three weeks ago i went on another trip and came home on sunday. Monday morning when i went to go to work, the left front tire was flat. I took it to the mechanic and he said that it had also seperated and the right front was soon to go. I have changed all the tires now. I have the right front that went flat, the left front that is ready to go, and the spare that has never been on the road. Do you want them for examination? these tires were from the n. Carolina plant, but maybe it's not the plant, it's the process. What should i do? i have the receipts from the last tires, but, i'm not sure about the first set i changed.( dot number: w2hl 1mo tire size: p235/75r15 )

First tire failed in april.tire went flat.when inspected, the tread was separating from the body.replaced it and its mate.still have the mate (unmounted) which numbers are being reported.second incidence occurred in july while driving on i45 south of conroe texas.car had been vibrating and was getting worse.while slowing down and looking out rear view mirror saw tread portion of tire fly off.the tire and its mate were again replaced.still have the original spare.both of these incidence appear to be very similar to those being reported.for both times, the explorer started vibrating but could not determine why until the tire failed.( dot number: vdhl1pm485 tire size: p235/75r15 )

On 1 may 1998, my daughter was driving my explorer when a tire blew.the tread peeled away from the tire.she was traveling about 65-70 mph (speed limit was 70).this happened in the afternoon on an overpass.she kept her cool and was able to control the vehicle.she was shaken up .a passerby stopped and changed the tire.i couldn't belive the looks of the tire.i had to go buy new ones (2ea) on 2 may 1998.i went to goodyear.on 11 may1998 i went and replaced the back two firestones.my spare tire is a tire is a firestone that was taken off of the car when tires were replaced.i was unaware that you could contact anyone of this issue, until at this time.i have contacted ford and firestone of this mishap and ford wrote me back was glad my daughter wasn't hurt and to contact firestone.i contacted firestone and they told me to go to any firestone and pick up an app;ication for reimbursement.but what i am hearing and read they will only honor from 1 jan 2000-16 aug 2000.that is utterly ridiculous.those tires that were on myvehicle were originals like all the others on the road.like i said i didn't know a complaint could be lodged for tires that were two years old.i am a widow on a fixed income and it was hard to come up with means to replace 4 new tires.i believ e i should be compensated some.i also have my original receipts from the new tires. Traveling on interstate at 70 mph and heard a knocking noise.pulled over to the side of the interstate.the left rear tire had peeled completely off.replaced the tire with spare.went to firestone dealer and was told that all four tires might should be replaced since one was bad.i replaced all 4 tires with the atx. Submitted claim to firestone for damage to car and tire not knowing at the time, there was a problem.i thought it was short of a miracle that firestone actually paid for the tire and damage.now, i know why.my husband has the wilderness at tires and we are proceeding to get his tires checked out.there is a waiting list in sc (being that we are the last state for the recall) for tires to be replaced.i am on a list but i am not happy that i have to wait, knowing what it is really like and what could have happened.( dot number: tire size: 235/75r15 )

Do fla residents need to have accidents before these tires are recalled?isn't fl a hot state?i have already had one of these tires peel like a banana causing over $700 to my rear quarter panel.luckily no one was injured.what do i do with the other firestone tire?they're joking when they say come in for visual inspection, right?these tires look good as new to me, and i feel tires for heat at every fuel stop. Tire separated and was taken to a firestone dealer where a replacement was purchased. With dealers receiving these defective tires, shouldn't someone have known earlier that this was a problem?( dot number: tire size: 23575r15 )

The problem started close to 6 months ago.i noticed anytime i reached speeds abouve 60 mph my explorer would begin to vibrate violently.i didn't think much of it at the time.i always keep my tires roatated and inflated properly, so i didn't think that was the problem.i recently was going down a back road and hit a bump.i felt my car jerk and then felt my tire was flat.upon exaiming the flat tire i observed that the tread had peeled partly off.at the time i was unaware that my tire was prone to this type of failure.i had the tire replaced with a uniroyal.up to this point i had been totally unsatisfied with my tires. They handle poorly in wet conditions and are noisey.recently the shaking became more frequent.i had the shocks replaced thinking that was the problem.the shaking continued.and last week i started reading the first stories about my tires.upon exaiming my tires, it was quite apparent that tread failure was the problem.i observed a large crack all the way around the tire tread on all the of my firestone tires and the spare.i documented this all with photographs.i was in a bind about what to do.i go back to college this coming friday, the 18th.this will involve a long drive at high speeds and carrying heavy loads. I realized i need to have my tires replaced asap.i began looking at tires and became concerned that i, a cash-strapped college student, would have to replace relativlynew tires because of a manufacture's defect.lucky a recall was issued, but this has done little to resolve my problem.with my move-in day rapidly approaching i have been placed on a waiting list for tires.i felt the nhtsa should be aware of my story and the fact that i'm a resident of south carolina, which has been given a low priority in the recall.thank you for your time and i hope this helps you in investigating the situation.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

In july of 1999, i experienced heavy vibration (not felt in the steering wheel) and loud pounding noises on the vehicle undercarriage.i was at freeway speed pulling a small motorcycle trailer (approximately 1000 lb.) north of los angeles on i-14 and had a passenger aboard who can confirm the events.we were able to stop without accident and could not immediately see any tread missing.i had the tires inspected at a winston tire store and they reported massive tread separation.i subsequently replaced the tires but retained the defective firestones. These tires are currently available for nhtsa inspection.( dot number: h4bndfa016 tire size: p235/75r15 )

On july 8, 2000 at 12 noon, the firestone tire ( front passenger side) on my 1996 ford explorer seperated while traveling at 70 mph. The force of the seperation pulled me out of the left lane into the right lane. Luckily the lane was clear and i was able to control my vehicle and pull to the shoulder. The condition of the roads were clear. The weather was sunny and hot. The incident occured on hwy 6 near navasota, tx. Although there were no injuries, there was approx. $1200.00 damage to my car. I immediately filed a claim with firestone for the damage to my car. I shipped the tire to firestone for analysis, and they have agreed to cover the damages to my car. I still have 2 remaining firestone tires on my vhecile and intend to participate in the recall recently issued by ford/firestone.( dot number: vdhl1pm455 tire size: p235 75r15 )

The right rear tread completely separated from the tire.the tire dealer who replaced the entire set said that all the tires were coming apart.the only reason we realized we had a problem was the car has a tire condition/pressure indicator and the car was riding rough.my husband inspected the tires on several different occasions and never noticed the tread separating.i also took my car to a tire dealer on two separate occasions when i first noticed the light indicator.the tire dealer never noticed the tread coming apart either.we only realized we had a problem when the ride became very rough.my husband changed the tire and placed the spare on the car until i could get to the tire dealer.( dot number: 95s tire size: p205/70r15 )

On april 20, 1999 i had my 45,00 mile service performed at a local ford dealership in dallas, tx on our '95 ford explorer xlt.during that service visit the technician noted the steel core exposed on the left rear tire; after close examination of the defective tires it was noted that it appeared that the tire had blistered and burst the outer core.since this was well before (16 months ago) the firestone axt recall our only recourse was to place the tire(s).in a effort to not put myself or family at risk we elected to "bit- the-bullet" and purchased a complete set of new michelin tires at sam's wholesale store.i wish to be reimbursed along with the other customers who are offered replacement tires or being reimbursed for tires purchased after january 1, 2000.i feel that i was was victimized by firestone's misjudgment, but unfortunately at this time do not fall within there 'specified window' of replacement or reimbursement policy guidelines.any help you can provide me would be appreciated.i have contacted both ford motor company and bridgestone-firestone and have been passed on from phone number to phone number to no avail.i am very frustrated with both ford & firestone as to how they have handled this unfortunate situation with the general public as well as myself.(tiresize: p235-75r15)( dot number: tire size: p235-75r15 )

Traveling from western washington to helena montana i experienced a strong shake in my front end.i proceeded to drive home anyway as i had been gone for over a week and needed to get back to work.when i arrived home in helena i went to a alignment shop a few days after my arrival.i was told by the alignment person that my left front tire would not balance properly.after this i inspected the tire myself only to find that i could visually observe several bumps on the outside of the tire.i contacted the dealer where i had got the tires (i had only 5,000 miles on these tires), and they contacted firestone.firestone sent a replacement tire and the dealer put it on for me.the next day i heard about the recall and because of the problem i experienced with the one tire they sent me four new tires.i am satisfied that my tires were replaced, but i feel very lucky that i did not experience a blow out as i was traveling at high speeds and the tires was obviously bad.according to the dealer the cords inside the tire had ripped causing the obvious warping on the outside of the tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Nearly killed on the 405 freeway when our tire exploded and blew out the right rear wheel well. I was completely wthout control and nearly rammed a semi truck and another smaller vehicle. I had two early tire problem one bubble on tread area and the other a chunk 5x10 inches came off with no damage.in early summer a large seperation flap caused about $1500 damage to the lt rear quarter panel area, which firestone payed with no questions.later in august the rt. Rear seperated with a smaller flap that did about $500 damage.a claim was not submitted here as the familywas on the way to rocky pt and had no room to store the old tire.we just had to buy another atx firestone tire because the tire store wasn't a firestone store.just last month, july 2000 i had a noticable steering wheel vibration at higher speeds you guessed it, thetread was starting to bubble.i bought a used firestone atx from the dealer that used to handle my tires.i needed to match the wear on the other tire as 4 wheel drives require equal rolling radius on all wheels.i took the old tire to the firstone company store and was told by the manager that they couldn't warrantee it because that tire was no longer available.that i concider to be an intentionally miss leady statement when a total recal come out two weeks later.i was never offered a subtitute for tires!i also have a spare that hasn't been on the ground in years, since the earlyest tire problem.this tire is checked, pealing and has pea sized voids in that have fallen from the tread area.my guess is that this is caused be the high rad heat in the local and is guarenteed not from of road use.i decided to right this because on the tv news tonight there wasa segment werein it was stated that there haven't been that many complaints.well--- phooey!not everybody complains, if a set of tire cost me a weeks take home pay i'd complain hard.i think a lot of better off people (or yuppie stagecoach drivers) just think oh well bad luck and buy more tires.i do hate to get screwed though.iv'e been waiting two weeks now for acceptable atx type tires that will run on a little snow or ice. At approximately 11;30 p.m. May 28, 1999,as we were traveling along interstate 10, just outside of tallahassee ,florida, my explorer suddenly veered toward the left abruptlly. A loud crashing sound was heard from the right rear of the vehicle. Pulling the car on the shoulder of the road, my wife and i checked to see what had happened. Much to our surprise there was nothing left to the right rear tire except shreds of a radial tire. Lucky for us , that at the time of the problem, i was driving and not my wife, as she would have never been able to manuever during the problem. Also there was no one in the right lane due to the late hour. With great problem, we changed the tire and arrived at our destination quite shaken up. After further examination of the tire and the vehicle the next morning, we realized that there had been much damage to the underpanels of the car. I must note, that at the time we were trailering a wave runner . So you can imagine how difficult it was to keep the vehicle and the boat on the road. After returning home, i went to firestone , a which time i was told that they could do nothing for me. I purchased 2 new tires to replace the back tires from firestone. One year later , almost to the exact date, we were again visiting in the tallahassee area, and on our way home the car began to shake. After going through the ordeal the last time, we quickly pulled over to check the tires and sure enough the same thing was starting to happen again. We changed the tire and came home. The very next day we replaced all the tires on the vehicle but not with firestone tires. I must mention that there was a total of $920 worth of damage done to the explorer during the may 1999 accident. There was no damage done during the latest shredding because i knew what was happening again. I am quite upset with the fact that nothing was done for me last year or this year ecept a denial on firestones part. My family could have been seriously hurt, not once but twice.

When i bought my ford explorer used in 1997 with 39,000 miles on it the tires were bloated out of shape and the vehical shook violently at any speed above 35 mph. I replaced the tires because they were extremely dangerous. Then the tires were re-called. I contacted firestone and they told me they would not reimburse me for the tires because i did not save them after they were removed and i could not prove i ever had them. Now i have a recall for the spare tire(which is the origional firestone atx defective tire. I contacted firestone by email with this fact and firestone is ignoring me. Please let me know what i need to do now that i have the proof that firestone demanded that they sold me defective tires.thanks, john ulrich.

I just received a notice from bridgestone firestone on a tire recall from years ago.i bought a new mazda navajo in 1993 and it had firestone atx tires.they failed way before any recall so i replaced them at my cost with the same.these tires failed also so i replaced them with something else.2 sets (10 tires) at my cost.when the recall came out i got nothing.in fact, i didn't even own the vehicle anymore.my complaint is...when it takes so long to identify a problem, what about the people who had problems before the recall?they can find me 10 years later, but why don't i have any recourse to get compensated for risking my life and paying out of pocket?

While i was driving down the road at about 55 mph, i heard an explosion and realized it was my vehicle.i was able to pull to the side of the freeway on the three tires and the rim of the forth.the tire blew out all around the seam.pieces from 3 to 4 inches blew out of the tire on to the freeway.someone from aaa came and changed the tire for me.i initially took the vehicle to the cutter ford dealer in aiea, but they could not find any replacement tires.they referred me to the firestone dealer at 98-141 kamehameha hwy, aiea, hi 96706.the firestone dealer was able to replace the blown out tire and one additional tire.i am now on a waiting list to have the other three tires replaced.the firestone dealer had no idea when the other tires will come in.this is the second blowout that i have had this year with the same brand and type of tire.it is now very disturbing and scary to drive the ford explorer as i constantly am in fear that another tire will blow out.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

I own a 1994 ford explorer.on or about 1996 i began experiancing a vibration in the vehicle at high speeds, above 55mph.i took my vehicle to a local firestone dealer and had the front end aligned and the tires rotated and balanced.this only slightly reduce the vibration problem.i return the vehicle to firestone and had them recheck the alignment and balance and i was told that the alingment was fime.firestone told me to check with ford to see if there were any technical service bullettens related to vibration at high speed.i called ford and spoke with their service manager who told me there was a tsb related to vibration in explorers at high speeds.i took my exploer to a ford dealer the next day to have it checked out.i was told there was a tsb related to the vibration and that ford had a fix.the fix involved replacing the moter mounts with modified moter mount and also modifications to the rear shock mounts.i was told that since my vehical had exceeded 50,000 miles that i would have to pay for the fix , which amounted to over $700 in parts and over $200 in labor.i also notice when i veiwed the tsb on the computer screen that it only applied to model up to 1996. I told the service manager that i felt ford should replace the parts for free and that i felt it was a safty concern.he told me i would have to pay for the modification.i called ford's 800 number and expressed my concern a regesterd a complaint.since the much publicized recall of the firestone tires and reading some of the fireston/ford explore "bad match" articles in the news papers i began to think that the firestone tires were not entirely to blame for the problems.i have drive my vehical for over six years now and have had the orignal firestone atx tires replaced three times and the vehicalhas awaysvibrated at high speeds.i feel ford should be required to repair the vehical without charge to the owner.please contact if you have any question concerning this matter.

While changing my rear brakes last friday on my ford explorer i decided to check my spare tire which happens to be a firestone atx. To my surprise the tire had actually "blown-out" and seperated while in the spare tire rack under my vehicle. This tire has not been on my vehicle since july of 1999 when i purchased four new tires and put the best looking tire in the spare tire rack. I believe someone needs to look at this tire in the rack and document this before i reomve it. This backs up ford's claim that it is the tire, not the vehicle that is at fault. You can see i have not tampered with tis tire in anyway, there are no fresh marks on the spare tire system showing the tire has not moved in many months. (dot number: b081tiresize: p235/75r15)

Problems with firestone radial atx tire equipment.*mr*mr

On a trip home, i had a blowout on one of the firestone atx tires on my ford explorer. I was on an interstate highway, traveling about 70 mph, when the tread separated and send us on a wild ride across the interstate. We were very lucky that the vehicle came to a safe stop. I had the tire replace with the same brand, size, and type after the firestone service center assured me that these tires were safe. I was told that the separation was due to speed and highway heat.( dot number: tire size: 235/75/15 )

Left for work at 8:40, friday 9-15.truck had been parked all night.i'd had not previous problems with vehicle.after i had backed out and moved vehicle forward, i heard a "whumping" noise over and over.i stopped the truck, got out and checked the tires.at first i thought someone had slashed a tire.i parked the vehicle and called my insurance company who in turn called a towing company to come out and change the damaged tire with a spare.the tow truck driver pointed out to me that this was belt that had seperated not a slashed tire and noticed that both the damaged tire and the other rear tire were both identical tires from firestone. I drove to an independent firestone station and was told this tire was not under the recall notice.i called another local firestone office and was told the same thing.but i've been told by co workers that this recall has been expanded to other tires than just the at, atxand wilderness series.i hope to find out if my tires are part of the defective tires sold and if they need to be replaced because of these defects.( dot number: hyhh tire size: p225/75r15 )

With all the recent reports of the firestone tires i thought it was important to report my incident to see the full scope of the problem.my wife had just exited the freeway going about 50 m.p.h. My wife did not hit anything and the tire was not punctured, it just blew out and came apart. The shop that changed the tire said they saw no puncture the tire just blew apart. Firestone has had problems with these tires for more than just the past few years but has always refused to acknowledge the problem. When the 1st tire came apart, i was traveling down the highway with a cab-over camper on the truck and towing a motorcycle trailer. The only damage was to the rim from riding on the pavement to a stop. When the 2nd tire came apart the truck was sitting in the driveway and i was inspecting the tire .half of the skin from the left side of my face was removed, my left eye was severly abraded and the eye socket was broken, both ear drums were blown out and my cochlea (the part of the inner ear that controls balance) was permanently damaged, and my left arm and left side of my chest were badly cut. I have pictures of both tire failures and of my injured self. I contacted several lawyers at the time and was told that i had no case against firestone because i had actually used their off-road tires off-road. When i purchased my new 1994 ford explorer, it wasn't long before i began to notice that the front end shook. No else but me drove the explorer so i chalk it up to driving a utility vehicle. I continued to drive without any undue stress, however, i began to notice that all the tires began to separate. I could see the chrome steel belt between the treat and the side wall. I used to apply armoral to the tires so thought maybe the sun was cracking the tires. As time when on, the front continue to shake as well as the interior of my veh. For the most part i would drive from the central valley of ca. To los angeles to see my family otherwise my explorer got little miles locally.all of the tires had to be eventually replaced (my cost), but the first tire began to separate and i took it to replace it at a firestone dealer, "tire world" in merced ca. I told tire world that the front end was shaking and that the tire began to separate. Tire world told me that the one tire needed to be replaced and that it could not be prorated because of the uneven wear. They also told me that the front end needed new cams. I replaced the tire and had the explorer front and rear aligned. The front end continued to shake but there was no unusal wear to the new front tire. However, the other front tire also began to separate during a trip from chowchilla to los angeles. While passing through bakersfield,ca, a large portion of the older front tire fell off. I had to immediatelypull off the freeway and put on the spare tire (same) i continued my journey and replaced the damaged/separated tire at firestone dealer, "tire station" in whittier. I replaced the one tire. I know had two new front tires, however the front end cont. To shake because the interior console would shake as i drove down the road. Over time, the rear two tires were more pronounced andbegan to separate. On 11/12/00 i returned to "tire world" and had the other two tires replaced. (tiresize: p235/75r15)

In june of 1999 i was traveling down i15 when i heard my explorer making funny thumping noises.i pulled off at the next exit and parked my car.i didn't know what it was so i let the car sit for a while in case it was something in the engine, i also got out and looked at the tires.this same noise had happened to us less than a year ago while traveling down the highway in aug. Of 1998 with the driver's side rear tire.i did not see any bulge on any of the tires so i decided to proceed down the road and if the noise persisted i was going to pull off again and call my father to come and get me.i was not on the road for a mile when the passenger side rear tire blew and i "fish-tailed"for a while untill the tire wrapped around the axel which took me into the median where i rolled twice.the police did come to the site and i was not cited for the incident because there was no way to avoid the incident.we notified our insurance company and they sent out what they called a "tire expert".the insurance company told us that this tire expert informed them that there was no reason the tire should have blown.this car was totaled beyond repair, so we had to accept the fact that we have been without a car for over a year.luckily we do have another car which we use to get to and from work.we also do have pictures of the tire and the vehicle after the accident.i unfortunately do not have the vin # on me but probably could find it if i need it.please keep me informed of any updated news or if you have any questions call me.thank you-kristie heaton( dot number: )

On feb 12 2000, something happened to the front (driver side) tire - itbuckled off the rim. The accident happened on a curve at the top of a hill. Because of the curve the travel speed was around 20 to 25 miles an hour.the tire came off the rim, my son could not control the truck, the truck hit an embankment, and the truck rolled over. We contacted our insurance company (nationwide),they took the truck to a recovery /loss center.we asked if some one would investigate why the tire would have come off the rim and they said tires blow out all the time. We were happy no one was hurt and accepted the answer. But every day i hear more about the recall on the firestone tires and i am concerned there are other problems, besides the tread separation. I do not believe the tire had tread separation. But i also believe we were very lucky the accident happened at a slow speed. Some one could have been seriously injured or killed if the tire would have blown out on the highway going 65.( dot number: tire size: p21575rx15 )

I was driving home from visiting friends who live about 13 miles from me on a hot sun. Afternoon on a 2-lane country road.i began to notice some sway on the curves about 1/3 of the way home.as i was driving into the city limits i realized the rear tire had gone flat but drove about 1 block so i could pull off safely.as a result the tire received some damage which made it difficult to determine the exact cause of the flat.i had it replaced at the same firestone dealer i bought it from but was puzzled because it seemed to be very chewed up for the short distance i continued to drive once i noticed the flat.the tire was one of four i bought together less than a year ago but the one which went flat was replaced before word of the problems with similar tires was publicized.i am still driving on the other 3 plus the replacement.i am very concerned because one of the tires (left front) has never held air well, in spite of taking it back for remounting, and it is once again losing air regularly which makes it difficult to keep it properly inflated.the earliest appointment i could get at another local firestone store is sept. 9.the only documentation which might be available of this event, besides my receipts, would be the aaa records when i called for assistance with changing the tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

Traveling off sanibel island and accelerating to 50 mph, i heard a loud thud and slapping at the rear of the car as if i had run over something. I pulled to the side and discovered that the rear passenger side tire had shreaded. The tire was still inflated but the tread had separated, tearing off the rear wheel guard and the driver's side running board. The driver's rear side was also dented. Since i had just accelerated to 50, i did not lose control of the car and no other vehicles were hit by the flying debris. We changed the tire and drove to the nearest firestone dealer to replace that tire and the other rear tire. They did not inform us of existing problems with the atx and sold us two new atx tires. After we arrived at our destination -- which was a family reunion out of town -- we discovered the problems with accidents related to firestone tire tread separation which had resulted in accidents and even fatalities. Upon return home we went to the firestone store and they took the two atx tires back and replaced them with bridgestones. The body damage estimate is $1,100. We still have two front atx tires and a spare and are waiting to see if a recall is put in place for those.( dot number: )

When we bought this truck in 1988, the original tires were firestones. At about 44,000 miles, i had to replace them due to the peeling that was taking place. It had peeled enough to expose a layer of white underneath. I still have the original firestone spare tire, which i used only once. I have heard that the problems went back to 1991, i contest that, it goes back to 1988. Enclosing, i had bought goodyears to replace them, and they lasted me 56,000 miles. Fortunate, i did not have a accident due to tire failure. Thank you for your time.( dot number: tire size: lt22575r16 )

3 years ago, i was returning from houston tx when the tread on the left front tire of my dodge ram charger peeled off.fortunetally, the pieces of the tire went under the truck and out the back.when i stopped and checked the tire, it was inflated yet missing all of the tread minus the walls.there was no serious damage, nor am i looking for any compensation.but given the current investigation regarding firestone tires, i felt it couldn't hurt to submit this.i am not sure how old the tires were when we bought the truck in 1996 (used).after the incident, i replaced all the tires (spare included) with brand new *cough* firestone tires, and sold the truck in april.( dot number: )

These tires were new from a firestone dealer in temple texas , they both blew with in 200 miles of being installed and folded both sides of the bed of my truck . This is not a recent problem with firestone tires . Before this i had 4 new firestone 721 radials shuck the tread also . Thank god i was in an older full sized truck both times . Pleasw look father back than 1991 , how many people died because of firestones lack of quality control as well as the pocket book being more important than thier customers . I was told with these tires i must hace run over something in the road and didn not have road hazzard warranty so i was out the money for 6 tires and the price of repairs to my trucks . I know better , these tires did just what they do now , the tread seperating and blowing out . Feel free to call me if you need any further information. On 8/15/97 we were travelling west on i-40 between winslow, az and flagstaff, az when our rear passenger tread came flying off our tire.fortunately, my husband was able to safely control the vehicle, reduce our speed and pull off the highway.we examined the damage, there was some small amount of body damage, but the tire, still inflated, had no tread. We removed the tire, replaced it with the spare and made our way slowly to flagstaff where we found a discount tire co. And had the damagedtire replaced, not with firestone tire, and we continued on our way to las vegas the next day.in november we took our vehicle to discount tire to have the other 3 tires replace and were told that they all showed tread separation and we were lucky.currently, we have one of those firestone tires as a spare as it showed the least to no separation.the dot # i provided is from the spare.i do not have the number off of the actual defective tire.no reports filed since there was, thankfully, no serious accident.i have receipts from both tire purchases and one from ford stating that we didn't have matching tires since we'd replaced the one, so they couldn't do the alignment requested that we thought was why the suv pulled to the right so drastically.we were told, by discount tire co. Rep., that it could have been due to the separation the other tires were experiencing.we feel very fortunate after learning of the recall.we had never heard of that type of tire separation before and the tires appeared to be in great shape!they weren't all that old nor worn.this was our first trip in this vehicle.it was frigheningbut we chalked it up to a blowout type of incident and did not report it.the slight body damage has since been taken care of too.( dot number: w2hl1m0083 tire size: p235/75r15 )

On 2 seperate occassions, an original rear firestone atx tires' tread peeled off resulting in 2 seperate accidents.both of the incidents happened while the auto was being driven at a high rate of speed during hot days in southern california.during the first incident, 5 people were riding in the vehicle which almost rolled.thankfully, traffic on the fwy was extremely lightand we were able to avoid a collision and get the vehicle to the side of the road.all 5 passengers endured extreme mental anguish that prevented them from continuing their travel.we contacted firestone who would not admit any defect with the tire, but did pay for the damage to the vehicle.however, we were very suspicous of the tires at that time since it seemed so unlikely that a tire would do that.so we asked to have all tires replaced.firestone rejected our request.approximately 6 months later the other rear tires' tread peeled off under the same conditions.again, no one was seriously injured.firestone however refused to replace that tire as well as any of the other tires.now that the news of this product defect is arising everything is starting to make sense.we feel both angry and betrayed by firestone that they had this information available, refused to fix the problem when it was so apparent on our vehicle, and knowingly put my entire family's lives in jeapordy.we intend to file suit against firestone.( dot number: tire size: 16 )

On a clear day with only one other car within sight , in the afternoon our pathfinder was inexplicably drawn sideways off the highway and was out of control.we traveled for quite a distance on the grassed area which was lightly snow covered and continued closely by the tree line.my husband was a truck driver and was able to keep us from hitting the trees but we slid over a dip in the terrain that sent our vehicle flying through the air and after landing my husband was able to bring it to rest in a ditch after hitting a cement culvert.we found we had a blown tire in the rear and the front tire exploded on impact with the culvert.the front right of the vehicle sustained damage.all of us were in seatbelts.our son did not get hurt(he was in the back seat and i had my body turned trying to hold him down.the impact sent my right hand side flying into the front dash and door.i sustained considerable injury to my right hand shoulder and arm and was out of work and in physical therapy for months.my husband was also thrown around considerably.to this day we have no idea and the police could not pinpoint any reason for this crash other than a defective tire.we thought the design in the pathfinder might be faulty and i did report this incident to the nhtsa in feb/march of that year.we have since gotten rid of the pathfinder as our son was terrified to travel in it.the vehicle itself held up well in the crash and we consider ourselves lucky to have been in such a well made vehicle.we have since purchased a newer pathfinder and have had no problems.however the tires from the previous pathfinder are on my father-in-laws chevy truck and we are concerned about a defect in the manufacture of the tire.this recent recall has caused us to think about that accident and we firmly believe we had defective tires.( dot number: tire size: atxp70 )

On the road while driving from jacksonville,fl. To norman,ok. On 12 apr. 95 i noticed a thumping vibration from the rear of my ford explorer. Following a visual inspection of the wheels i determined the vibration was caused by a swelling of the threaded surface of the left rear tire. Nearing our destination my partner and i decided to drive on into oklahoma and have the vehicle inspected at the nearest ford dealership since it was still under warranty. On apr 14th reynolds ford of norman,ok referred me to firestone mastercare car service in norman,ok. The tires were then balanced and rotated and it was recommended i have the shocks replaced which i did with the top of the line shocks.the problem persisted on the return trip to jacksonville and continued to worsen. Having been bounced back and forth between ford and firestone neither claiming responsibility for the tire problem nor able to fix it , i decided to replace the tires bf goodrich and have had no tire problems since. I feel like i've gotten the run a round about my atx tires and should have been compensated for tires and shocks not to mention the time wasted and the exposure to a hazardous condition had the tire exploded during high speed driving on my return trip from oklahoma. I was led to believe that my tires were ok and that the problem was merely an out of balance tire probably caused by bad shocks.they completely ignored the swelling at high temperature while driving at interstate speeds.( dot number: )

On 6/6/00, while driving home with 2 carpool passengers the left rear tire disintegrated at 70 mph in 105 degree heat. The first indication that something was wrong was an extremely violent thumping from the rear. I thought at first that the driveline broke and was smashing the pavement, but then, after no more than a second, the noise stopped and the steering wheel was almost wrenched from my hands as the truck lurched severely to the left, hurtling us towards the bushes thatare the only separation from oncoming traffic on that stretch of hwy 99 near selma ca.the wheel had actually locked up for an instant as the failed tread wrapped around the axle before ripping free. In the fraction of a second it took to realize i was no longer in control of the vehicle and was probably going to crash into oncoming traffic, the tread peeled off all the way. Instantly, the noiseand violent motion stopped and i watched the tire's tread tumble into the median through the left side mirror.i noticed i had instinctivly took my foot off the gas at the first sign of trouble, and i was now cruising at 60mph with no trouble. I eased into the right lane, slowing further, thing to pull over but the truck was handling fine. Seeing an exit 1/4 mi. Ahead, i headed foritwith flashers at about 50mph. Upon stopping we were amazed to findthe left rear tire stripped of tread, but still fully inflated, (30 psi according to my guage).the shredded tire imploded my rear fender, left black gouges aboveand around the fender, and striped away the mudguard and interior of the wheel well. After changing the tire and depositing my shaken passengers at our carpool site,i went to the nearest tire dealer and bought a set of uniroyal tiger paws. They threw away the firestones and i have no record of them, but i do have a record from my local goodyear dealear when i took the truck soon after i bought it with acomplaint of a strong pull to the right. They did an alignment test and told me a be

I was driving down the interstate at night, aproximately 75 mph.when all of a sudden, i felt a jerk, and the vehicle was out of control.i have had flat tires in the past, and this was a completely different feel.my steering was almost inop, and breaking was almost non existant.i only thank god for looking down on me at that moment.after nearly crashing, i was able to make it over two lanes and finally come to a stop.when i inspected the tire, i had found it completely seperated in one whole piece.after removing the tire, i had to literally unrap the whole tread that had rapped around my tie rod end, and kick the other portion that was jammed in by brake. I have worked on airplanes in the usaf for the past ten years and never once experienced a tire that badly mutilated.it appeared to be a manufacturing defect.you might ask yourself how can i make that assumption?i have been working in quality assurance for the past two years in aviation, and i see manufacturing defects all the time.i have a bachelors in professional aeronautics, with a minor in aviation safety.i think you guys are making a serious mistake by only recalling atx p35/75 r15s.there is an obvious problem with more atx tires. The question is, how many lives will it take before more tire sizes are recalled.reminds me of the "blood priority". I will be taking pictures tomorrow of the damaged tire and the whole tread that was seperated.if you are interested in the pictures, i will gladly send them.i am still severely shaken up over this whole episode, so i apoligize for any typos or gramatical errors.besides, it is very hard to type in this small skinny window.i dont quite understand the rational of it.i'm sure you get thousands of complaints a day, and yet,i hope you see the severity of this issue.thank you for your time. 552(

During the first part of august, i heard about the recall on my firestone tires,i immediately called my local firestone dealer in monroe.they explained that they were not doing anything yet; however, i could make an appt. To have my tires checked.it was 3 weeks before they could get me in.i waited 3 weeks and took my explorer in to have the tires checked.they looked at the inside of 1 tire & said, yes, your tires are being recalled, we will put you on the list to receive new tires, we are all out at this time.they also stated it would be 2-2.5 months before the tires would be in.they never bothered to check my air pressure or for any defects in the tires.i am a single parent with 2 children.my son just came home from a rehab center because he has a traumatic brain inj. From a driver who hit us head on.i have to drive my son to farmington 1-2 times a week for doctor appts. & therapy.i drive anywhere from 100 - 150 miles per trip, on the expressway.we had a vacation planned for labor day weekend to visit my parents in arkansas.we had to cancel our vacation due to the defective tires.i am very upset that it took 3 wks for anyone to even look at my tires and during the appt., they only looked at the number on 1 tire.they never bothered to check the tires.i was never put on a list for new tires until the day of my appt., 3 wks after i called.i am worried about my entire family, especially my son with a traumatic brain injury.i have no other choice but to drive this vehicle with defective tires.there have been several deaths and injuries due to these defective tires and the number continues to increase.i received the form to replace the tires on my own & get reimbursed.i can't afford to do this, i am a single parent and my ex does not pay his required support.i don't understand this, if there are tires available for me to purchase, why can't firestone put them on my vehicle or send me to someone who has them?

On 02/16/2000 the left rear tire de-laminated while i was driving on the highway at 75mph.the right rear tire was also found to be de-laminating at this time.both tires were purchased in 1997.then on 7/28/2000, a third atx tire, purchased jan. 1999, was found to be in the early stages of de-lamination.when the matter was taken up with a firestone dealer, the dealer denied the defect and offered to put 40% of the price of the now de-laminating tire towards the purchase of new tires.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

It was a real close call on i -17 in phoenix , az. If it had not been at night when the freeway was uncrowded i am sure it would have been much more serious. On two occasions (aug/1998 & may/2000) i experienced a tire failure - total tread separation. Each incident occurred at high speed in extreme heat. There is body damage from the tread slamming the body of the car.( dot number: tire size: 235/75-15 )

Just a few more data points for the firestone investigation; two of the firestone atx tires that came as original equipment on my 1991 ford explorer experienced tread separation in mid 1995, causing body damage but no accident or injury. We took the tread from one to a local firestone dealer, who claimed it was "road hazard damage" and that he couldn't help us. The tires were always inflated to the psi recommended on the sidewall; they were not underinflated. (dot number: unknowntiresize: p235/75r15)

While driving 45 mphrear passengerfirestonetire blew out.the consumer checked the tire pressure three weeks prior to the blow out. *ph*nlm

There is another failure mode on atx tires.in our case, the three failures that occurred all had strikingly similar features.the outside sidewall in each case failed catastrophically.the entire sidewall appeared to be shredded.the failure occurred at highway speeds and without warning.tires were at ford's recommended inflation pressure and temperature did not seem to be a factor as the failures occurred at various times of the year.i attempted to e-mail firestone and received no response from firestone on the failures.( dot number: )

I currently have four of the recently recalled firestone atx p235 75/r15 tires.i purchased these tiresin october of 1995.i had to replace one of these tires when the sidewall ruptured with approximately 31k miles (i hadn't hit anything to cause the damage ... I thought potentially it was caused by vandals but odd that only one tire was damaged and the area i was at the time of the flat was a quite peacefull neighborhood).it was recommended by the dealer to replace another tire since varying tread life could present a hazard while driving.with respect to the recall, i was wondering if claims would be allowed for potentially faulty tires that have already been replaced. I had the first blowout in feb. 98, i had the spare put on and went to firestone the next day (i was approx. 60 miles from home when this happened). They wouldn't honor the warranty even though the tires had less than 10,000 miles on them because i wasn't the purchaser. I had contacted the person who sold me my explorer the night of the blowout and they were going to bring me the original paperwork on the tires to use the warranty but firestone said this wasn't possible since they were not the owner of the vehicle any longer. I had the second blowout in june of 98 on the freeway just leaving texas and coming into new mexico, the temperature outside was about 95*. I was no where near a firestone dealer. A tow truck stopped and changed my tire for me and followed me to the closest town (about 30 miles away). There was only a small tire shop there (no firestone dealer) and i purchased the best used tire he had (he had nothing new in my size). When i got to las vegas the next day i went and puchased a new tire, but at this point i had stopped purchasing the exact same tire. When the original firestone tires wore out on my ford explorer,i replaced them with what the dealer recommended, namely fi restone atx tires.both rear atx tires developed cracks on the sidewalls and had begun to separate.the firestone dealer blamed me for the problem, saying that i must have hit a curb when parking.when i point out that the rear driver's side also had the same problem he made the same excuse and told me thatnothing was wrong with the tires and that the wear on the sidewalls was my fault.i got so disgusted at the firestone tire dealer's lack of responsibility and failure to take any corrective steps that i drove to costco and had them replace all 4 firestone atx tires with michleans.( dot number: tire size: 70 x 15 )

I have had problems with my firestone atx tires for 3-4 years.my explorer would started vibrating and i would take it to my firestone dealer in houston.one three separate occaions over the last 4 years, they would tell me that i had tread separation and that it was a problem with atx tires on explorers. Hence, my tire records at firestone will show that they knew of this problem serveral years ago.each time they told me, they would only offer to prorate me a new tire.the third time it happened, i made a big seen in the dealer store, and they decided to give me a new tire. The point of this report is simply that my dealer knew of this serious problem many years ago.i did not know how serious it was, so i did not report it to the ntsa, at that time.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

We were preparing to leave on vacation to go to washington d.c. With our 2 small granddaughters and we took our ford explorer to varnadore auto & tire sales, 1706 8th avenue w, palmetto, fl 34221. In the afternoon i received a call from mr. Varnadore telling me that he found a problem with the tires and asked us to come in so that we could decide what we wanted to do. When my husband and i got there he showed us tires that had splits in them right where the tread connected to the tire. He said that he wouldn't go on a trip with them because these tires have a tendacy to peel off and he would replace them. We bought 2 newidentical tires and had him mount them on the front and put the best other two tires on the back. We also told him when we took the car to him we wanted to make sure that we had safe tires that were properly aligned for our trip and stressed that to him again. He said that we were now in good shape and didn't have to worry. Not so,much tbl on trip( dot number: 0 )

Was driving approximately 65mph when a banging noise againstvehicle was heard. Vehicle vibrated & shimmied.had maintained control of vehicle & pulled to the side of the road. Noticed left rear tire tread had separated, buttire remained inflated. Had exchangedtire with spare. Went to firestone dealership. Had no radial atx tires available. Went to pep boys & received a different type of tire, but same size.firestone, tire sizep235/75r15 with 30,000 miles on it. Did not have tire available.

Traveling 70 mph when experienced 1-2 seconds of mild shakiness in car followed suddenly by sound that resembled jackhammer and extreme difficulty controlling car.once came to rest found that roughly 50% of tire tread width had separated and peeled back between 180-270 degrees of the tire circumference, leaving a flap that spun and destroyed rear bumper and splash guard (left), also causing damage to left quarter panel and left rear door and associated plastic moldings.i am currently sending a claim to the manaufacturer, whose number i got from the nhtsa hotline.i will send a copy of the cover letter to you. At approx. 5:00 pm on march 2000, while returning to charlotte, nc from trip to columbia, sc that morning (driving time approx. 1 hr. 15 minutes ea. Way), handling became rough following noise of something hitting undercarriage of vehicle. Upon pulling off highway, we examined left rear tire and discovered that tread had completely peeled away, leaving exposed smooth rubber surface. Changed tire and continued balance of trip without incident. Tire was purchased in october 1999 from sears. In light of recent publicity, we felt we should report this. Would also like to know why it took the removal action by sears to spotlight this problem and why the ntsa did not make this problem public knowledge beforehand.( dot number: )

The tires never 'failed' per se.we bought them new a couple of years ago (1998) for our ford explorer.from the day we had them installed, the explorer would vibrate at speeds of 65mph or higher.we took the vehicle back to the retailer several times, but they were unable to fix the vibration.since we have recently had the tires replaced with michelins (due to the recall), the vibration has suddenly stopped.it never occurred to us or the retailer that it was the tires causing the problem - but obviously it was.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

At approximately 1930 on november 25, 1999, while traveling south on i-81 one mile north of the wva/va state line the tread on the left rear tire suddenly separated from the tire body.at the time the vehicle was traveling at approximately 65-70 mph in the left lane.the tread seperation was abrupt, but the cords maintained integrity long enough to safely slow the vehicle and get to the right shoulder of the road.on or about 11/03/99 the right rear tire failed while in a mall parking lot.the tire failed through loss of air and a blistering effect on the tread and body.the vehicle mechanic who looked at this tire refused to let the drive leave their establishment with the tire on the ground.they would put the spare on for free, indicating their concern, not just an effort to sell a new tire.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

We were driving on i-44 between adair, oklahoma and tulsa, oklahoma.our traveling speed was 75 miles per hour.without warning the left rear tire lost all tread causing our 1994 ford explorer to fish-tail out of control.we slid off the highway and hit highway mile-marker sign 260.our explorer conintued to slide off the highway missing a guardrail by less than 3 feet.at the time, we were sliding sideways around 40 mph.hitting the guardrail would have put the truck into a end-over-end roll.my wife, two kids and myself your blessed to have missed it.the truck came to a stop 150 yards later and 40 yards down a ditch.the firestone atx tire that failed is still completely inflated just without any tread.we have notified firestone and they want us to ship the tire to nashville at your expense.if they show the tire to be defective then they will reimburse us for the demage to the truck ($5,000)plus the shipping cost of the tire.( dot number: )

My wife and i purchased a new ford explorer in 09/1996.since that time we have had to replace every original tire, including the spare, because of tread seperation.this did not occur all at once, but over the period of time since we purchased the vehicle.some of the tires were replaced at the ford dealership and some of the tires were replaced at firestone dealerships, regardless of where the tires were inspected, the cause given for the bad tires was consistently the "beginning of tread seperation".unfortunately, we were not aware of the extent of the problem nationally, because had we known, we would not have replaced the original tires with the same model/make of tires.i do not readily have available the dates, the vehicle mileage of when the tires were replaced nor which tires were replaced (e.g. Front right or rear left) at the time of replacement, but i will search for those records.i always carefully monitor any subtle changes in the performance of my vehicles, which is why i was able to detect early, the seperation of the tread from the tires.the symptom i detected was a noticably rougher ride beginning at a speed of 50 mph.contact me, should you need any other information.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

My original equipment firestone tires were found to have tread separation when i bought them in becuase of excessive wobble. I had these 4tires replaced on my own. Now there have recalled these same tires for the exact issue i had to replace them. I have written to firestone and completed all of their reimbursement forms only to be rejected since my replacement was before their recall. I don't understand how they cannot reimburese me for defective tires simply becuase i replaced them earlier. The nhtsa should force firestone into reimbursing all owners of these defective tires who had them replaced regardless of when the replacement took place. We were in just as much danger driving on these defective tires as anyone was who had them replaced in 2000 and was eligible for reimbursement. Thank you. On 3/30/000 while traveling from san diego to san francisco, i felt slight vibration in the rear of the vehicle which i assumed was a wheel slightly out of balance. I stopped for the night in pismo beach and on inspectionfound that the rear tires were separating.on one tire there was approx. An 18"tear between the steel? backed tread and the rest of the tire.the other rear tire also had a smaller separation starting. The damage was not immediately noticeable from a casual look at the tire. It was only by luck that we had planned to stop in pismo beach. Had we continued directly to san francisco. I suspect the tire would have come apart on the highway. Ihad both tires replaced the following morning with goodyear wranglers - rotating the remaining two atx's to the rear.the tires with the separation were not badly worn or underinflated.they still has a reasonable amount of tread left. I may be able to determine the mileage on them if i can find the original invoices or the tire stores have maintained a record - which i expect to be the case. My sonsometime borrows the vehicle during the summer and recently made a trip to los angeles up and down i5, which is both hot and fast.i would urge you to make a rapid determination as to whether these tires should be recalled.( dot number: )

Over a period of two months, vehicle performance deteriorated severely.rough bumpy ride on smooth pavement, and very strong pull to the right.i thought i had an alignment problem.eventually, i was unable to steer a straight line at speed above 45, and i noticed tire tread separation.i could insert fingers between tread and tire on two tires; i do not recall which two.for the life of the tires, i had maintained pressure at the ford-recommended 26 psi, though i never rotated the tires.when i discovered the tread was beginning to separate, i went to a firestone dealer immediately.i was told that i must replace the tires; i had failed to properly maintain firestone-recommended pressure, and had failed to rotate.i bought four new wilderness at tires, but i still have the original spare tire which has never been used.( dot number: vdhl1pm016 tire size: p235/75r15 )

In all cases the tread abruptly separated from the belts, but the tire remained inflated.(fortunately, as that last one could have killed us.)date and mileage of first incident, and mileage of last incident, are approximate.have not had damage estimated for the last incident, which thrashed the entire side of the car; no apparent damage from first (not counting the new tire), and ~$150 from the second for the tail light and damage to exhaust system.the first incident i attributed to road debris that i hadn't seen (it was night), and the last one i thought i was safe because the tire was not original equipment and it only had ~30,000 miles on it.tread was good on all tires (>~1/8" on the old ones, looking new on the newer one). I have had two problems with the firestone atx tire.the first was an original atx tire that had the belts seperate, causing vibration.i replaced the tire with the prorated warranty.the replacement tire blew out at 50 miles an hour.i still have this tire in my possesion.i noticed in the paper that these tires were under investigation, so that is why i am reporting these failures.( dot number: w29v tire size: p265/75r15 )

I complained to firestone and they said i probably needed a front end alignment.i had three alignments done in the suceeding 18 months and it did not correct the problem. After i have read about the defect in the tires, i thought maybe that was an indication the treat was faulty.it only happened on one tire. I didn't report as i replaced the tires when necessary but thought is was odd that this would happen. (tiresize: 16/225)( dot number: tire size: 16/225 )

Firestone tire tread separation occurred on i-75 near bradenton, fl, in last october.without warning, the tread separated at highway speed and wrapped around rear axle.i briefly lost control and narrowly avoided flipping the vehicle.the tire never deflated.my 8-year old son was with me at the time.this occurred on a weekend, and the following monday i brought the tire into the firestone dealership in palm bay, florida.the manager described the failure as "de-vulcanization" of the tread, and mention that it should never have happened.i filed a claim through thhe firestone's insurance for the damaged that occurred to my emergency brake and quarter-panel.firestone processed the claim and paid for the damages which i had repaired totally $800.they made me mail them the failed tire, but i did take photos and copied the claim paperwork.the set of atx tires, which were my second set, had about 40,000 miles on them at the time, and were in great shape.firestone compensated me for the failed tire, but because i was now uncomfortable with the other three, and replaced them, all with bridgestones, at my own cost.( dot number: )

I finally handled the truck and pulled onto the side of the interstate. I proceeded to get out of my vehicle to try to control my nerves and try to figure out what happened. I walked over to the rear passenger side of my vehicle and the entire tread of my tire was gone. It was strewn about. The tire other than the tread was in perfect condition. It was the full size spare on the car when i bought it and it had only been driven on for aprox. 6 months with no problems.i proceeded to look at the side of my vehicle and my sidestep was missing, and my car was dented up. I purchased 4 atx tires 04-28-1997 from the firestone tire center,6783 w. Canyon ave, littleton co 80123.on july 17th, 1997 the right rear tire threw its tread while i was going aroun a curve on the highway.luckily there was no other trafficand i was able to keep the vehicle from rolling.the firestone dealer where i bought the tire blames the tread separation on a road hazard but they did replace the tire under warranty.( dot number: tire size: 235 75 15 )

While driving the car started to shake as if the front tire went flat.i got out to check it but it had air.i then thought that the road could have been bumpy but in fact it was not.i made an appointment to have the tire changed and by the next day 3 of the 4 tires needed to be changed.the technician at the tire store told me that the belts were broken in the tires and they were shaped like eggs.i replaced all 4 tires for the car could not be driven as it was.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

We purchased our 1994 explorer in dec. 1993. We immediately started having trouble with the car. It would vibrate at a higher rate of speed. We took the car to the dealer and they told us that it was a built-in vibration and that we would be contacted by ford . We also took the car to firestone and told them this story, they balanced the tiresand told us to go back to ford. Every time we went back to ford they told us some story that theywere working on the problem and that ford was going to send them a kit to correct the vibration. We waited...we went back to firestone and they rotated and balanced the tires again. After manyyears of getting the run around from everyone involved we finally purchased new tires and shocks and suddenly the problem went away. Now that all this information has come to light about ford and firestone covering up these problems we may have saved our lives. We would like to be reimbursed for the cost of the tires we bought. We still have the original spare. I contacted firestone about the tires and they told us that since we replaced them before the recall it was to bad, try calling ford. I called ford and they said they wouldn't do anything. We have all our paperwork to back this up. Please let us know if we can do anything.( dot number: tire size: p235/75r15 )

In august of 1999 i had a tire separating on my explorer, i replaced all 4 tires in the same month at firestone. I received a recall notice the following year.i turned in the required info and was denied because it happened before jan 2000. I guess if i had be injured or killed firestone would accept my claim of 324.00 for the tire replacement expence. I am not happy with there responce. (dot number: vdhltiresize: p235/75r15)

I was able to steer to the shoulder and stop, with significant difficulty.i did not know this info might be significant until now.i was not in a southern state in hot weather. I had three firestone tires fail on my ford exporer between 8/98 & 4/99.the first two time were while traveling at speed on the highway, from which i was able to safely and without incident pull off the road. Both of these failures were catastrophic with the entire tire falling apart.the third failure was simply the tire going flat.this tire had visual cracks on the sidewall just below the tread. All three failures where indicative of tread separation.the first two were preceeded by the vechile riding roughly.shortly after each incident i replaced the bad tire with the firestone atx or atx ii as this was the manufacture's (ford's) original equipment.the exact dates of the incidents are estimated based on the tire replacement reciepts.( dot number: tire size: 235575r15 )

I was (a 53 yr old woman) driving alone thru the desert, pulling a travel trailer (2,500 lbs) when the tread suddenly peeled off my front right tire .it was daytime, july, hot and i was going about 60 mph.luckily i was able to stop with out injury or damage.i immediately replaced all 4 tires because of my distrust of the them.the dot listed is off one of the tires( that i now have as a spare)--i don't have the one that peeled.i asked the tire people to save the best of the 4 for a spare.i am furious that i risked my life on tires that were known as defective.( dot number: w2hl imo 3 tire size: p23575r15 )

Original tires and replacement tires on a 96 explorer. Front passenger's tire belt separated from both sets of tires.

Twenty minutes into a 65 mph speed the right rear tread separated from the tire body causing a loud noise. The tire did not lose any air. The incident occurred at mid-day on a pleasent sunny day in central florida. There were no injuries only fright. The tire was original equipment on my 1991 ford explorer. The firestone manager told me the tread separation was due to the tires age since it was manufactured in march 1991. I bought a new set of four atx replacement tires after hearing the firestones' manager's comments. If they stay in one piece they give mileage over 90,000 miles which no other tire can match, maybe that's why the tread comes off -- it's too heavy with tread. ( dot number: )

I had tread separation on two tires within a week. First incident was reported to firestone. Report#017116. Second incident will be reported on monday 6-28-99. I am not taking any more chances. The failure occurred on interstate 10 in tempe, arizona at approximately 12 noon. At the time i was a resident of tempe, arizona for 12 years. This is another case of firestone atx tread separation and fatal rollover of a ford exploer.i understand through our local cbs affiliate that this agency has opened a preliminary investigation of this defect.if nhtsa truly stands behind thier motto, "people saving people"then you must put consumer safety first by recalling these tires on these vehicles.by allowing ford and firestone to avoid an expensive recall, our government is standing by as people die.all this in the name of money.you must be well aware of the millions of dollars being paid to victem's families to keep this issue out of the courtroom.if your waiting for ford and firestone to recall these tires out of the goodness of their hearts and to save lives, keep waiting. Our only hope is nhtsa.this agency has the ability to save lives.please do it.( dot number: )
