I have had two d407 rear tires for a harley breakout 2013.my driving is a t2 mile stretch from oakland to richmond ca to work and from richmond to hayward 16 miles twice a week to work part time as a community college instructor. Trips to los angeles once or twice a year. No other trips to surrounding areas just riding around town at low speed every weekend.both rear tires showed signs of failure at about 3k with cracks spanning the breath of the tire. The first had several cracks, when the front did the same thing i went to the dealer and they said the tread was below 32. I did not go at first cause i had already been having runaround with them scamming warranty repairs. But when the front cracked about 4k i was sure it was the tires and went in. The first 1.5k was done at or below 50 mps cause the bike was new and it was my first motorcycle after taking the safety course in 2008 bought bike 2013. I am an excellent bicycler.switched to perilli and a fine tire the night dragon, drove till slick and rainy season approach before change. I had been checking these and just noticed a crack that looks deeper and the start on one side and spans the time to thinner on the other side. When i went in to change the first ones the mechanic looked at the front and asked where i had been keeping the bike. Inside and it is 6 months old. I am 68 so remember those rubber tires we used to make go carts etc, you could tell when it was dried and they reminded me of that but i said what do i know about motor cycle tires in 2012. Talked to revzilla about cracks and do chunks come off at speed. He said he has seen that at tracks but it is more a matter of temperature than speed, which makes sense.i was at the shop a few months ago and the machanic said he still had the tire. I will check and see. Cant seem to find the pics i had.
I own a 2009 harley davidson softail custom fxstc with 5,800 miles on it and the front tire is showing notable cupping and excessive wear. This model of tire dunlop d407f is no longer being sold and is superseded by the d408f. Service bulletin m-1258a covers other harley models with a similar tire and issue. Since a motorcycle only has two wheels the cupping and premature wear are a hazard that needs to be addressed as a safety concern. Reported as case #[xxx] to harley davidson. This issue is mentioned on several harley davidson rider forums. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
This is to correct file number 10421452 --the contact owns a 2008 harley davidson dyna series low rider.the contact stated the rear tire is a dunlop k591 160/70v-17.the contact noticed in early june 2011 a split in the center rain grove. On aug. 19, 2011 found additional cracks in the tire in these center rain groves.the motorcycle was taken to a local motorcycle shop who stated the tire was defective and the splitting was abnormal.this motorcycle shop suggested it be taken to kents harley davidson where effort to contact ?dunlop motorcycle tire consumer affairs department? went un-responded to, until the date of this report.kents harley davidson can provide pictures of the defective tire.the current mileage on the tire is around 7000 miles and the tire has 4/32 tread left from a new 8/32 depth. This is a life threatening situation and dunlop is refusing to respond to the defect. It should be fruther noted dunlop is willfuly , delibertly ignoring their warranty on motorcycle tires and are therefore willfuly delibertly indangering customers and have full kowledge they are doing so.i have all correspondance and photos to prove this in a court of law. The gov. Should act on this to protect the citizens. It should also be noted the form says tire 407 -- it is a dunlop k591 160/70vb-17 --this gov. Form provides no way to properly give this info except here.before i had a [xxx] to file this by vocal and he did not report what i said -- so this form is now necessary in the manner best i can do.
