Since we have owned this 2003 expedition we have had the windshield replaced due to noise and loose stripping, then, the contracting person put in the wrong years windshield.the emissions canister was cracked andwas replaced.the muffler would pop after turning off the engine, but couldn't be fixed until verified by ford. I waited for 3-4 hours one day with 3 children while they let my car run and shut off. We finally called ahead, and had them wait outside on us until we killed the engine to hear it pop.it was a poor muffler weld and was repaired.the side molding rattled badly, and was terribly faded, and that was replaced.the door gets a lot of wind noise , and a whistle in the window.they said window passed the dollar bill test and was fine but it still whistles.they, put a clear strip along inside of door to help noise. It doesn't.then ,the rearcontinental tirehad such horrible, uneven wear, it was extremely dangerous.bought new tires for $600.thenrear differential malfunctioned, and would make a grinding on turning left or right.they fixed that in march 2005, and it just started doing it again.now, there is a strange noisewhen revving the engine to drive coming from under the hood.it is going in tomorrow for the noise and the rear differential.on top of all the repairs, we have had a squeaky brake issue.also, they have said theywere good.they just get a lot of brake dust, just sand them.our side windows shimmies all the time. !i did invest in an extended warranty!.

Hello. I recently purchased a new ford escape with continental tires in june 2003. Tire model: continental contitrac suv tire model #: 235/70r16 we experienced a complete tire failure while traveling at 60 mph, with sidewall and tread separation, for no apparent reason. As you can imagine this was very dangerous and unpleasant situation, thankfully no one was hurt. The vehicle (and tires) have 5k miles. There was no load or other unusual circumstances at the time. I am writing for several reasons: 1. Where do i officially report such an incident as a public safety issue?2. Where can i obtain safety ratings regarding this tire in comparison to other suv tires?thank you, sincerely, john w. Cole, mddetails of incident:ford escape tire blowoutford escape, purchased june 2003, approx 4900 total miles continental tires (stock tire with vehicle)date and time of incident: 9/25/03, 8:20 pmwife and son (10 weeks old)driving east bound on route 50, crossing severn river bridge.traveling at 60 mph in moderate traffic.loud pop heard by wife and driver rear tire blows out.wife and infant son trapped at far side of bridge, very dangerous situation!vehicle undriveable.police called, set up flares, and notified tow company.tow company stated supplied jack would not lift the truck chassis high enough to put on spare!!tow company used additional jack to raise chassis.key issues:suv purchased for safety purposes.tire new, with little mileage.blowout occurs on highway without reason.truck with no load, less passengers, at the time.tire jack did not work adequately.extremely dangerous situation!if this had of been a front tire, vehicle may have rolled?

Side mirrors do not return to original position after backing up. Too much brake dust and wear.tires had to be replaced at 20,000 miles for sidewall degradation.

First of all, i cannot say with any certainty weather the issue is with the automobile or the factory original tires. I can only suspect it is with the automobile based on 30 years of experience of owning and operating automobiles.1. Excessively loud noise from the factory original tires.2. After 19,000 miles all 4 factory original tires are wearing down on the inside of the tread only.3. I was offered a new set of tires from the dealer service center at a reduced cost.
Two tires failed within a week with similar circumstances.the first tire failure was less dramatic than the second due to the fact that it occurred at night when temperatures were cooler and vehicle stops were more frequent.the second failure was catastrophic.the sidewalls completely separated from the tread on a very busy highway.after the first tire failure i had the tires aligned, balanced and pressure checked by a gm technician.the service manager at the gm dealer clearly told me that the two remaining tires were in good shape and had several thousand miles on them before i had to worry about changing them.four days later the tire failed completely.after the incident i called back to the gm dealer to verify their process for tire alignment.they informed me that the tires were indeed verified to be at 35psi, the factory recommended level.i retained the failed tire for future use.the tires were continental conti-trac p245/65/r17 with a dot number of hw8t bl5 0305.a similar report has been filed with the nhtsa.
Dt: was driving at about midnight when suddenly the vehicle started shaking.there was a loud thump.pulled over ,and tire had exploded.had towed to home.called aaa to come out and change tire and put on spare tire.there was no evidence of running over or striking an object.when went to service dealer for tires, dealer said tire should not have deteriorated.dealer suggested consumer take picture of this unique damage to the tire.no problems since this has been replaced but there was concerned because the remaining tires were continential brand tires ,and the vehicle still shook, even afteralancingtires and alignment.

The treads of my continental tires separated when i was traveling on the freeway. My car lost traction and spun uncontrollably when i was driving on freeway.my tires were purchased 5 years ago and have about 75,000 miles on them. The other 3 continental tires also show substantial wear that are beyond the typical wear and tear.
I have been having problems with my vehicles and all 4 of my tires since july 06. My vehicle/ steering wheel/front end is shaking & vibrating terribly. I was told by three different authorized tire/dealerships that all four of mytires are bad, they are cupped & feathered and the tread is not good. The dealership where i bought my vehicle says it is not their responsibility to provide me with new tires (my vehicle is still under warranty) the tire manufacturer will only pay for 1/2 the retail cost because they say it is not their problem either. I am very upset. The vehicle is unsafe to drive, and i am afraid i am going to get hurt or someone else will., i do not know who to trust and could really use some help.
Heard a hissing noise when i got in my car this morning. Noticed a valve stem was cracked on back tire (drivers side). Went directly to tire company.. Had to stop numerous times on the way to put air in the tire because the crack was getting bigger. When i arrived at the tire company, the valve snapped and the tire went flat in a matter of seconds. The tire company examined my vehicle and stated that 2 other valves were cracked. I had to replace 3 valve stems today.
Tread separation on continental contitrac suv tires.with 48,000 miles on vehicle, and routine service, tread in good visual condition.tread separation on two different tires w/i 30 days.all four tires replaced.some minor damage to suv body. Scared me.

I bought a 2003 ford expedition.i have been having problems w/ the ride, only to be told by the dealer that the only fix is to replace all of the tires.i only have 20000 miles (almost all highway) on the tires, with good tread depth.according to the technician "they've had tons of problems" with the continental contitrac suv tires.if this is the case, why isn't there a recall?this vehicle is very hard to steer with the tire problem, and it shouldn't be the consumer that pays for these flaws.
1.we were driving to go on vacation on i-95 in georgia when the car became out of controlwe spun and hit a guard rail before we came to a stop.the car hadto be towed.there was over 6500.00 in damage to my vehicle.the insurance paid for 3 tires but not the one that caused the accident.
This is to let you know about a potentially dangerous problem with the continental contitrac tr tires that came standard on the 2003 ford expedition.the following is a copy of an email that i sent to the continental customer service department.i think that has all of the information you will need to start looking into this problem.please feel free to call me with any questions since i think this is a very important issue.you have a length of only 2000 words and my message to them is too long so please contact me for the rest of the message. Dear rashida, (or whomever else sees this message)i thank you for your help and concern this morning.i have some interesting news.i think it is quite astounding and will warrant some major attention from the powers that be.not only is the damage to my tires a manufacturer defect but the damage is in all of my tires, including one that was replaced about 6 months ago.the other original that had to be replaced may have had the same problem since it had a gash in the side that caused it to go flat. After talking with you i happened to mention my problem to a neighbor who asked me to have her husband look at it.as it turns out he had been a plant supervisor for kelley-springfield tires before moving up to this area.he knows all about tire manufacturing and testing.he took one look at my tire and said "there is no way that was caused by a razor, that is a defect and it is bad news."he told me to let whomever i talked to know that the tire is separating "where the apex meets the sidewall."he went into a bit more technical description but i am not an expert so i can't accurately relay what he said.he said it is a major safety issue and he bets that a major recall will be occurring, hopefully before anything tragic occurs.he is not an overly excitable man but he probably told me about 10 times to get the tires off of my car.
Dt:while driving at speed of about 62 mph, it was dry and clear, the car in frontslowed down ,and asconsumer was applyingthebrakes the side wall of tire blew out. There was crash, no roll over. The tire has not been inspected, but the insurance was going too.took pictures, and got all the information that onthe tires.
After traveling about 350 miles on i-95 & i-26 we experienced a blowout on the rear tire.it did 1300.00 in body damage to our 2000 silverado 1500 p/u's rear fender.after replacing the tire with the spare we continued to our destination where we replaced all 4 tires with new ones.there was still approx 8000 miles left on the warranty, but we purchased a different brand.we saved the defective tire and sent it to the manufacturer who claimed it was road hazard damage.we did not encounter any road hazard and maintained the correct air pressure and tire rotation schedule.
While traveling at 60 mph, right rear tire failed to hold together. A "thumping" sound was head just prior to the tire exploding. Diver maintained control after hitting the retaining wall along the freeway. Vehile impacted rataining wall once, then spun and inpacted it again totaling the vehicle after airbags deployed. Upon the on scene inspection, it has been determined that the tire separated and lost all tread. No deaths happened as a result of the driver not panicing and maintaining what control she was able to. Tire was a continental contitrac suv.
In the afternoon of saturday august 8, 2009 the tire warning light in my 2004 expedition came on. Later i inspected the vehicle and noticed a tear in the front passenger side tire. The tear was about 1/2" to 3/4" long at about where the steel belt meets the tire wall. Monday august 10, 2009 as i was travel south bound on i 15 about 3 miles south of temescal canyon exit. I heard and felt the tire blow. I was able to pull over. The entire steel belt tread from wall to wall had torn off and there were two lacerations, completely through the tire, about 5" apart running from the rim to the tread. I will replace the tire.

Tire blew out in the sidewall. Tire is a continental contitrac suv 235/70r16 (note that you do not have this tire size listed for this tire model but this is the correct size). Area where defect occurred appears to be where tread and sidewall meet. There is no evidence of prior damage to tire. I did not hit anything prior to the blowout.defect is approximately 6 inches long.
Side mirrors do not return to original position after backing up. Too much brake dust and wear.tires had to be replaced at 20,000 miles for sidewall degradation.

I drive a 2004 ford expedition eb with contential contitrac suv p265r70 17 tires.dec 2004(2) two of the tires had to be replaced due to cracks/tears in the sidewalls, the vehicle had 17k miles . At that time iwas told my other tires are fine. I have 22k miles on the vehicle now, and a tire has developed cracks and "chips" and the connection between sidewall and tread. These tires are a serious problem waiting to hurt the public.
I have continental contitrac suv tires.they have lumps in sidewalls that concern me.

Three of the four original tires on my 2003 ford expedition have had a tread separation failure. The first occurred june 2006 at approximately 36,000 miles. This tire was replaced pro rata at the ford dealership. The second occurred fall of 2007 at 48,000 miles and was also replaced pro rata at the dealership. Now a 3rd tire has failed, feb 2008 at approximately 52,000 miles.

2004 chevrolet trailblazer (fiance's), factory equipped with continental contitrac tires. At approximately 12,000 miles, we noticed a tread separation on right rear tire. (two different spots on tire). It is very obvious that the tread is peeling back on rest of tire also. As of this time, the dealer has refused to do anything about it.ore recently, we found out that continental has a 12-15 week backorder, leading me to believe that they have halted production due to a known problem.****actual tire ize:245/65/sr17**** site did not give that option.

Two of the oem tires on my 2003 ford escape xlt were replaced on 8-12-05 because of tread/should separation.they were continental contitrac suv 235/70-16 (dot#a3084533602).the tires had 17,250 miles on them and had only been driven on pavement and not faster than 70 miles perhour.they had never been under inflated nor drive for long distances.the other two tires on the escape are losing chunks of rubber, but the continental adjuster at discount tire company said they are not separating from the tire carcass so continental will not replace them.he attributed the loss of chunks of rubber to driving on gravel roads.this car has not been drive on gravel roads.
Only one of 4 original equipment tires on a 2003 ford expedition had execssive and unsafe wear ( feathering) on the insidetread of a tire after 23,000 miles . The tires were rotated every 4000 miles. Manufacturer refused to adjust the tire. Ford refused to adjust the tire.photos avaialable upon request.
Dt:the contact stated the driver's side rear tire cameapart on the tread.this happened while driving on the interstate at 70 mph.it pulled off the bottom part of the truck, anddid damage to the bumper and paint damage to the door.the vehicle was pulled over and a mechanic had to be called to change the tire.the tire still had air, just the tread was coming off.the tire was taken to the dealership, but they state it was not covered under the warranty.
A continental contitrac at size 25575r17 mounted on the left front of a 2001 lincoln navigator failed at highway speeds on a a three lane highway in ma.the sidewall and tread separated around the circumference in a catastrophic failure.with great difficulty, i kept my vehicle from hitting other cars and/or going off the road. Continental has recalled tires of this type but not my serial number.they have had previous suv crashes resulting in deaths.i think the tires mounted on my vehicle are all potentially defective and asked continental to replace four tires and the damaged rim.they have only agreed to share 50/50 cost on one new tire.it gets worse.the tire that failed is out of production.they supposedly are working on a replacement but it is in the testing phase.in an all wheel drive suv all tires should be the same.since the original is discontinued, i need four new tires.i think continental should pay for all four and the damaged wheel.
The contact owns a 1999 ford f250 super duty.the vehicle has continental contitrac suv, size p265\70\r16 tires.while driving 65 mph, the front driver side tire tread completely separated from the tire.the failure caused the tire to slowly deflate.the contact pulled off the road.the dealer stated that the contact was at fault because he either did not properly inflate or overloaded the tire.the contact owns a mechanic shop and checks the tire pressure regularly.the current mileage was 137,000 and failure mileage was 115,000.
Have 2001 dodge ram pu upon which continental contitrac suv 265-70x16 tires were mounted dot a3723jj1103. Tires had approx 29,000 miles on them (60,000 mile warranty) while traveling nb on ih35, just south of hillsboro ,tx, left rear tire exploded, about 15 mins after strange vibration was felt. Tread separated from sidewall. Entire tire was recovered and taken to discount tire co in grand prairie ,tx.was inspected by manager who also inspected remaining tires. Manager insisted upon immediate removal of all continental tires after finding evidence of impending tire separation on remaining tires. Left rear was sent to continental for inspection who reported that the tire was damaged previously by unknown impact. Failed to report on remaining tires. There was no previous impact and there was no puncture prior to tire failing. Continental refuses further comment.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 72 mph the treads on the driver rear tire separated without warning.the vehicle was maneuvered off the road.damaged was caused to the rear bumper and quarter panel on the driver side.the dealer has been alerted.
Problems with excessive tire wear. 1.) (21,088 miles) purchase a pre owned certified vehicle02/14/08 front tires look fairly new and rear tires looked like some wear on inside but not bad enough to bring to dealers attention. 2.) (21474 miles) brought back to dealer 02/25/08 for excessive wear on driver and passenger rear tires. Driver side rear was almost completely bald in inside of tire. Passenger side was not as bad but was worn to a point where you can notice. Dealer gave me a hard time and said that there was no way those tires wore that quickly. They said i bought the car that way. Put two new tires on the front (i paid for one $110.00) and took the fairly new front tires and put them on the back and had a 4 wheel alignment done.3.) (21505 miles) 02/27/08 brought vehicle to my local ford dealer and had the 4 wheel alignment check because i had no trust in purchasing dealer service department because of the hard time they gave me over the problem. Alignment checked out to be within specifications.4.) (21,972 miles) 03/26/08 notice excessive wear on rear tires again and brought it back to local dealer. They agreed that the tires front and rear where wearing excessively and performed another alignment check. Again the alignment was within ford specification. They also check underneath the vehicle for any part being bent and also check the frame to see if that may be bent. Everything checked out ok. Dealer brought the vehicle to a private tire / alignment shop and had the alignment checked out by an expert and he made some adjustments to bring it in a tighter to the specifications. Dealer advised me to bring back the vehicle back after 1,000 miles to rotate the tires and check them as well.

Side mirrors do not return to original position after backing up. Too much brake dust and wear.tires had to be replaced at 20,000 miles for sidewall degradation.
