I tried to install a yakima roof rack on a naked roof. The q towers connect the cross-bars to the clips that attach to the roof. The roof rack is secured by snapping the cam covers that are part of the q towers. With the q towers that i purchased, i was not able to fully snap the cam covers as their shape was not right. I borrowed q towers from a friend who had an older model and could install the bars without any problem. Without the cam cover fully engaged, the q towers are loose and the roof rack could detach from the roof.

On july 22, 2014, i was driving on rt 95 in ct when the kayak on top of my car came off and went sliding down i-95. Fortunately traffic was light and no was hurt.the problem was the failure of a yakima-supplied cam strap. I do not know how often these straps fail, but this is a potentially serious problem.i have now gone back to usingmarine rope to attach my kayak, and i have driven over 10,000 miles with this setup and never have had a problem.
