I was stopped for wearing a non-dot approved helmet on three occasions. But, when i bought a new helmet after the first stop, i took in the nevada revised statute, a copy of fmvss.218 and asked the dealer if the helmet i was purchasing complied with both of the above.he said it did.i was stopped again two months later.i once again attempted to purchase a different helmet, with the same guidelines, but the salesperson had no idea if the helmet complied, and repeatedly stated that fmvss.218 was a manufacturer's obligation, not the obligation of the seller.if it is not the obligation of the seller, then it cannot be the obligation of the purchaser.i went to the highway patrol offices in nevada, california and arizona and they only told me that any helmet i bought had to meet fmvss.218.i contacted the department of transportation and asked for a list of approved helmets, so i could make a "conforming" purchase.i was told they do not approve helmets, and once again was referred to fmvss.218.as a middle class, administrative assistant who likes to ride without getting stopped due to the helmet, can someone please tell me what helmets are legal - as in, i need a manufacturer, make and model before i spend any more of my hard earned money.i live in rural nevada, so it has to be one i can buy on line or in washoe county.
