I own a 2004 toyota sienna xle that includes a towing package.the trailer hitch for this vehicle is a safety hazard because it hits the ground going over any small bump when there is no trailer attached, and it is only inches off the ground when a trailer is attached, constantly scraping and causing sparks.this can be especially hazardous at gas stations where there are any flammable substances if it is necessary to go over any small bumps and there are sparks.
We installed the hitch system on our 2004 toyata sienna van at u-haul spring center tx on 10/28/2005. We were informed by another driver on road that vehicle's brake lights were not functioning on 07/26/06. Toyota dealer found a blown fuse, and replace it. Next day on highway, we found the signal lights were not functioning properly. The vehicle was checked in parking lot and found that the brake lights also out again, and the shift gear locked in parking position. Fortunally no accident happended on highway. The vehicle was towed to toyota sevice station, it was found that the u-haul installed hitch wiring harness was shorting out the taillights, brake lights, shift release solenoid. And it was also found that the wiring were routed along sharp edge of frame, and bumper and in behind assemblies in the rear hatch channel, (this wrongly wiring layout was verified and confirmed by u-haul center slidell la laterly). The hitch wiring haness was disconnected and fuse was replaced. The vehicle is working properly now.
Refusal to rent a trailer to be used on a 2004 ford explorer.i have been involved with using larger trailers then theone i wanted to rent.u-haul states they do not rent for ford explorers because of damage.neither you or ford have released any adverse notices about using a ford explorer to pull a trailer.therefore u-haul must be admitting to put faulty equipment on the nation's highways.could their vehicles also be faulty?
Valley sells the 88052 hitch to uhaul and they sell it as the uhaul 78234. The hitch has 3 holes on the right side.uhaul asks that a third hole be drilled into the frame of my odyssey van. See http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&q=cache:3qx9z6r4fu0j:https://www.uhaul.com/publication.ashx%3ffilename%3d78234.pdf%26digest%3dm6nqp58t8fdw61r/5fb6sa+uhaul+78234&hl=en&gl=ushowever for the same hitch, valley asks that only 2 holes be bolted and the 3rd hole be unused.this is an unsafe condition. Possibly thousands of odysseys are on the road with unsafe valley 88052 hitches.
In may 2007, u-haul of kingston, ny installed a trailer hitch on my 2004 honda pilot.on april 4,2008, my turning signals stopped working and i smelled a burning electrical smell.i scheduled a service appointment with my local honda dealer for april 8, 2008.i stopped using the vehicle.the car alarm began to go off intermittently, without provocation.when we tried to start the car to bring it to the service appt., it would not start.it was towed to the dealership.the service tech's localized the smell to the rear of the car and began investigating the trailer hitch installation.the "high energy 3 to 2 taillight converter" had overloaded and the casing around the unit had melted through.
On november 5, 2006 a trailer hitch and lighting package was installed by u-haul of poway, ca.on november 17, 2006 i picked up a trailer from u-haul in order to transport personal items from california to oregon.after traveling to oregon towing the trailer it was determined that the turn signals and brake lights were not working properly.i took my car to the bend, oregon u-haul dealership to determine what was wrong.it was determined that the converter box was defective.i had it replaced.while driving my car in oregon in mid december the turn signals stopped working.i took the car to the local subaru dealership and it was determined that due to impoper installation of the lighting package the turn signal wire fell onto the exhaust pipe, melting the insulation which caused a short in the system and then blowing the signal fuses.i brought this to the attention of u-haul in poway and have been met with "too bad" attitude.these are serious safety issues.u-haul may be intalling defective converter boxes in vehcles and also intalling lighting packages in vehicles improperly.u-haul needs to be investigated for these serious safety issues.
In the fall of 2008 i bought a uhaul 17157 3 to 2 wire taillight converter--an adapter to hook trailer lights up to when towing a trailer. It was installed by a uhaul technician.in the fall of 2009, i started having very strange electrical problems: my brake light and tail lights would fail intermittently-sometimes they would work, other times they wouldn't.directional signal lights on my dashboard would also light up for no reason. I thought i had an electrical short and spent weeks looking for it. Eventually i took it to a mechanic who told me the problem was the uhaul box. He removed it and the problem was fixed.i contacted the ceo of uhaul, joe shoen in phoenix, asking for reimbursement for the cost of the box, plus the money paid to the mechanic, and the amount of a traffic ticket i got for having no brake lights. I was told they would not even reimburse me for the cost of the box because it only came with a 90 day warranty. Clearly the box was junk to have only a 90 day warranty, but, for safety's sake, it shouldobviously be designed that if it should fail, the lights and electrical connections of the car it was installed on should still work properly. It was not designed that way and is a safety hazard.
Inproper installation of u-haul trailer hitch and wiring. Letter provided upon request.
I had a trailer wiring harness installed at u haul inc in sep of 2004, i started experiencing problems with the lighting on my truck in january. This item caused me to lose my tail lights, turn signals, brake lights and head lights. I removed the item from my truck and found that the tail light wire going into the convertor box had shortedout and started to melt. When i told the instaler about the problem they admitted they had problems with the item but failed to remedy the problem since i did not go back to them. Not only did this problem cause a possible fire problem but it also posed a safety problem as you could lose you ligting without knowing it and cause a posible crash.
I'm wishing to report an incident that occurred may 28, 2010.i feel this is important because of potential safety issues.i had a trailer light module installed ( product number 13493) by a uhaul representativein omaha, nebraska . I took the 2006 jeep liberty home and hooked up my boat trailer to thenewly installed module and check to see if the signal lights. All of a sudden i saw smoke. The smoke came billowing out of the rear left signal light area. Fortunately i had a garden hose and started squirting water on the smoking area. It got bad enough i called the fire department and proceeded to douse the smoking area with water. After several minutes i got it under control. I immediately returned to uhaul and one of there reps proceeded to install a new module. She also checked the connector on the boat trailer and rewired it too make sure it had no shorts. She checked for blown fuses and found two which she replaced. She began to test the module with lights on, blinkers on etc. All of a sudden the new module began smoking and she disconnected it. She told me my trailer had a short in it. I will be getting the trailer checked for wiring problems. Forgive me for using all caps but i wish to emphasize this.my main concern is: that if i repair the wiring on my boat trailer and sometime in the future the trailer wiring would short outi'm in a situation where i could have a possible fire again.there is a possibility that the module has an unknown defect which could leadtoa serious safety issue.
We rented a truck from u-haul on 19th ave & bell road.we traveled approx. 320 miles round trip but the odometer recorded 750 miles.i filed a complaint with u-haul and got no cooperation.i was charged $600 for a $300 rental.
Just had the most horrific experience trying to rent a tow-dolly. Firstly - they guy didn't know what he was doing - and said the guy who usually does it is out. And that they aren't a "real" uhaul store.then he didn't have the straight blade to round plug converter. Then the tow-dolly fell apart within a couple blocks from the store~! almost causing serious accident and injury. If not for my driving skills we'd be dead. I am filing this as a formal complaint - and will be filing with the nhtsa and other agencies as well.(date 01-16-17 - order # 24136734 - uhaul store 7220e 22nd st tucson, az 85710).
