3 of 4 tire valve stems installed when i bought tires from sears in feb/07 have failed in the last two months.i believe this is the issue documented in your investigation pe08-036 dated 5/15/2008.in neither case did sears say anything about a general problem when i brought the car to them the first two times.the third time i was not close to a sears store & had it repaired in a local tire store.i found out about the general problem from the consumer reports website. I was fortunate that each time the tire went flat when the car was parked in a driveway - it had been driven at highway speeds shortly before each instance.i feel that due to the potential hazard involved, a general recall notice should be issued.

Re: tpms, valve stem failure due to corrosion. Valve stem locking nut corroded and sheared off, causing the tires valve stem to fall into the tire, causing rapid release of tire pressure.upon inspection of other valve stems, the same issue was present in various degrees of corrosion andadventual failure.

Nhtsa action number pe08036we purchased a set of michelin tires on oct, 06, from ntb in fredericksburg, va to put on my 2004 mercury sable. Within the past 2 mths, i have had to replace all four valve stems.the first went flat, i took it back to ntb, they replaced it.within 2 weeks, another tire was leaking air.i took it to a different dealer, replaced that valve stem.the next morning i drove to work, when i parked the car, i heard air and another tire was leaking air.i had the last two valve stems replaced.the valve stems broke off. The last tire dealer , little tire in fredericksburg, va, gave me one they took off my car and saidthey looked as if the valve stems had dry-rotted.i contacted ntb about this problemasking if there was a defect or recall on the valve stems.they told me they would check it out and i have never heard back.i do think these valve stems need to be recalled.it is very dangerous.luckily, i pay close attention to my car and tires and noticed the leakage before the tire went completely flat or blew out but not all people do that.this is definitely a very serious problem.

March 8, 2011; vehicle was at dealer for service, while performing the service the right rear tire, pressure sensor fell apart.this was replaced with a new sensor. Other sensors in the other three tires were not checked at that time. June 5, 2011; computer warned of low tire pressure, i attempted to put air into left front tire, took the cap off, put the air nozzle on and the valve stem broke off. Needless to say, i found out how to change a flat tire.june 6, 2011; i went to a local tire dealer, snow tires removed, to be replaced with summer tires. The technicians reported that two of the sensors, valve stem assembly came apart. I requested standard value stems to put in 3 of the tires.i feel this is safer, seeing that the valve stem is now, a one piece unit.not something that two pieces of metal that are adhered together and don't stand a chance in our climate.this is a 3 year old vehicle, value stems are 3 years old, i feel this is a safety issue for all concerned. I have contacted the compliant department at chrysler dodge in michigan, as what will be done, don't know yet.

I work in a tire store. Every day i see cars that have bad valve stems. Most of the time the customers come in because of a flat repair. It has been going on for about a year. The company knows about the problem but the turnover in mechanics is so great most of them overlook the problem setting the customers out with the possibility of another flat repair which does happen. I have watched the company try to handle this problem for about a year and it isn't working. The government needs to recall all defective valve stems.
