Reese weight distribution ball mount- when changing from one vehicle to another it was noted that the teeth that hold the ball mount to the hitch were completely stripped. This could have lead to trailer separarting from vehicle and a possible accident- this happened with 2 separate reese hitch ball mounts
A ford excursion hauling a four star brand horse trailer switched lanes on the interstate and started to sway and the reese trailer hitch that was used to hook the trailer to the excursion cracked causing the trailer to break away from the vehicle.this event caused the excursion to cross the median into oncoming traffic.the excursion hit a chevrolet cavalier head-on killing the two occupants in the cavalier.

Trailer ball mountsnapped in front of trailer ball while towing trailer that was under weight of manf. Specs. For ball mount reese # 21793 5000# trailer weight 500# tong weight trailer id plate stated 4420# trailer weight 410# tong weight. This was a reese ball mount sold by cequent towing products a trimas corp. This could have been deadly, just 1 mile further down the road i would have been on interstate 20 and doing hwy. Speeds i have repeatedly tried to get company to contact me by phone calls,e-mails, and letters, the only thing i have heard from them is ( the ball mount broke due to being overloaded) this came from trimas corp. Lawyer. I feel the ball mount broke due to metal failure not overload condition. I also feel trimas corp. Should take responsibility for damages.
1-7/8 trailer ball failed at highway speeds while carrying small landscaping trailer and golf cart. Item was installed and torqued correctly but while under load snapped midway down the shank causing the trailer to detach from the tow vehicle, destroying both the trailer and golf cart. Load was far less than the 2000lb maximum as per reese.
Trailer hitchs:fifthreese 16000 fifth wheel hitch may have a defect in design that allows safety pin to fall out.without a safety pin, the main load-bearing pin can then slide out causing the rv to become disconnected from the towing vehicle.the pin fell out on two recent occasions on my hitch.
I was driving down an inclined road at night in a rainstorm (in colorado mountain pass) when i heard a loud clunk. I slowed down immediately and turned off the road onto the first road i could find. That's when i noticed one of the spring bars for my reese mini350 weight distribution hitch was missing and that there was an indentation on our camper's nose hitch crank wheel where the spring bar had hit. The spring bars are under hundreds of pounds of downward force and can't fall off by themselves unless the hitch falls backwards. My hitch was still adjusted properly.i eventually had a replacement bar fedex'd in from a dealer after the manufacturer (cequent dba reese towing) refused to provide one to me. They said the remaining spring bars they had in stock were defective.after careful examination of my remaining spring bar it was noted that the end of the spring bar had worn away so that only a tiny portion of the steel was holding it in place under the clamp. It is obvious that reese did not make this part wide enough. The replacement spring bars (i order both sides to be safe) have a much wider surface area to keep them in place under the bracket. I don't know if they redesigned this part or whether my original parts were that wide to begin with. In any event, if they did redesign it then the owners of the original parts need those as replacements. And if they didn't redesign it then these parts are flawed as they can wear down too quickly. Fortunately, our camper did not run over the dropped spring bar. If it did, then this incident could have been fatal.i reported the lost bar to the durango police department in case they ever found it on the highway.

Extra spacers on the hitch cause the safety latch to rub the groves in the latch handle permiting the handle to open the safety latch whenthe trailer is going down a steep grade resulting in the trailer dropping onto the truck.nlm
After driving approximately 75 miles, the interchangeable hitch ball released and the trailer became disengaged from the vehicle, driver was traveling at a slow speed(35-40 mph).the trailer did not turn over but eventually came to a halt in the ditch with only minor damage, driver was able to reconnect the hitch ball.
