Pulled 5th wheel trailer 205 miles in rain and wind before truck mounted hitch components supplied by pulliam enterprises broke apart and dropped trailer into box of pick-up truck while making a turn at approximately 5 mph. Intersection was partiallyblocked for 1.5 hours until trailer removed by another truck. Hitch totally replaced.
The problem encountered concerns a pullrite fifth wheel trailer hitch, model no. (p/n) 1200. The failed component is a welded locking pin that secures the trailer to the hitch through the locking mechanism. After releasing my trailer from the hitch, i noticed that the release handle "fell" to an abnormal position. Upon investigation as to why this happened, i found that the pin that secures the release handle to the lock bar had become loose because of a broken weld. It should be noted that the" lock bar" is the only device that secures the "lock jaw assembly" in place once the trailer is secured to the hitch. Failure of the lock jaw assembly to remain secured during towing will very likely result in the trailer becoming detached from the tow vehicle during operation. Upon inspection of the said weld, i noticed that the original weld had only been a "tack" weld. In other words, the weld had only been performed on a small circumference of the pin. Luckily, when the weld broke, a small portion of the weld remained with the pin not allowing it to pass through the release handle and out onto the truck bed. I took the broken component to a commercial welding shop and had the pin welded to the lock bar with a 360 degree weld. I have contacted pullrite/pulliam enterprises inc. Through their website about this matter but to date, have had no response fromthem. Therefore, i am bringing this matter to your attention as i feel it is a serious concern. I requested information regarding dis-assembly and re-assembly of the unit so that i may have the new weld plated to prevent rusting of the part to prevent inevitable corrosion and possible further failure(s), but again, no response.updated 12/02/10updated 12/07/10updated 12/30/10updated 01/07/11.
I was towing my 5th wheel camper out of an rv park, after stopping at the stop sign at the highway, i began my right hand turn on an up hill slop, i felt a jerk and i heardthe hitch disengage and my camper slid backwards into my tail gate. I have been in touch with the regional manager at pullrite and he ensures me there is nothing wrong with the hitch plate, however i purchased a new one and after inspecting both my old and new plates, there is definitely a flaw in the plates design that under certain circumstances will allow the plate to open up.the 5th wheel plate needs a safety pin or similar device to prevent it from dropping a trailer. ..updated 12/11/17..bfvin not available updated 7/25/18
Ball bearing failed in new hitch assy model #4400 causing my 13k fifth wheel to unhitch from my truck and slam back into my tail gate. Tail gate kept fifth wheel from severly injuring people in cars behind me. Company listed below told me today that ball bearing has been replaced with a rollor bearing but i do not beleive a recall is in effect for the ball bearing hitches and that has me highly concerned about the safty of others. When i informed my installer, trailers and hitches, wichita, ks 1-888-288-6418, he said another customer with a new same hitch failed too. Hitch manufacturer: pullimen, 13790 e. I purchased a super glide hitch manufactured by pulliam enterprises. This hitch unlike any other rv hitch requires a very high maintenance schedule as in daily, unlike and other 5th wheel hitch if it binds either due to a lack of maintenance or an item locking the hitch up will cause the 7k pound -25k pound trailer to come loose rip through the tailgate and has the potential to become an uncontrollable missile should the break away switch fail to engage. No other 5th wheel hitch has this dangerous feature. Also the same head is used for all weight loads.therefore all hitches should have a safety backup chain sufficient to arrest the trailer should this hitch bind for any reason and destroy it's self. I have this hitch and it came apart and caused $7500 in damage. Pulliam after many discussions is very oblivious to the fact that damage or risk of death of this sort is just unreasonable when pulling an rv. They told me the defacing of the metal parts was actually a good thing yet the deny warranty coverage when there is defacing of the working surfaces. The working surfaces according to the manual are to be sprayed with grease or graphite which are unprotected from dust or road debris which adds to the marring if the working surfaces because the hitch weight scrapes of nearly all lubricant on the first pass leaving the bare metal to grind and wear down the working surfaces till they eventually gall causing the hitch to succumb to torque effects which then drops the rv typically at speed into the roadway. Oddly pulliam states as much in the manual yet supplies no arresting system for it. Most all bumper pulls have chains and most other 5th wheel hitches don't need a chain because they won't come apart as the pulliam will. I have found a few people on the net that have had similar problems and pulliam has told them that it is a lack of maintenance this shaming them into not looking at the real issue with the hitch. 877 pullrite [xxx] is the owner.
