Adding oil to generator then started generator as it was warming up smoke startedcoming out of the generator.

Onan rv genset 4000ky micro-quiet generator model # ky fa26100j this rv motorhome generator had oil leaks. The unit was taken into the repair facility of cummins west inc. For service. During the course of several service attempts at repairing the problem, and bringing the unit to the service facility back and forth for the 5th time, there were still complications with oil leakage. After sending me home again after they stated all ok, while operating the generator at my home, the unit started to smoke, which resulted in excessive smoke in the engine compartment (not from the exhaust) and possibly into themotor coach living area. It was ultimately discovered by the local cummins west inc. Mechanic, the cummins west inc. Branch manager, and the cummins west inc. Service engineer, that the problem resulted from the design of this onan model which routed oil carry over into the air cleaner and ultimately into the genset housing. The service engineer stated that there is a risk to sleep in the rv while the generator is running and that he wouldn't sleep in it.we later had a conference call with the vice president of cummins west inc. And informed him of the situation and my concerns that the generator model is unsafe and a danger to the public. As a result, they offered to replace the unit with a different new model which they stated had the same design which allows the oil carry over to accumulate in the genset housing. We refused the unit and took our rv home.please take note that these units, per their statements and theirs and my observation, pose a risk of smoke and/or fire with the potential for property damage and ultimately public safety.

The contact owns an onan inc 4000 watt oil/gasoline rv generator (model: 4kwfa26100j, serial number: 8000060411) that was being used in a 2000 itasca spirit rv. The contact stated that the generator leaked oil after being used. The generator was inspected by a mechanic who determined there was a defect on the design and that the blow off valve was blowing oil into the air filter. As a result, oil was entering into the generator compartment and accumulating. The oil was blown to the generator's motor and caused the vehicle to smoke. The generator was not repaired. The approximate current and failure mileage was 120,000.
