Material composition of many holley performance supplied carburetor components does not meet astm specifications for zamak 3.high lead content present causes inter-granular corrosion, which is accelerated by high humidity environments.defective zinc cast fuel bowls, in particular, may result in fuel leakage and fire or explosion.affected part numbers are:fuel bowls 34r12377fuel bowls 34r12378fuel bowls 34r12379metering blocks 34r12380main bodies 8050 and 8051these components were supplied to holley by stone bridge industries in china and built into most holley carburetor between september 2005 and july 2006.approximately 66% of all carburetor manufactured during that time have 1 or more components with lead at least 4x the specification limit (.020%).some parts tested over 40 times the specification limit (.28%).http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1455245&highlight=holley%2bcarb%2bproblems shows how one of the components used in street application has failed.further down in the discussion thread you can see what the affected date codes were.http://www.eazall.com/brochures/zinc%20alloy%20composition%20&%20control.pdf shows the affects of 4 hours steam testing of defective zinc castings.http://www.diecasting.org/media/offshore.htm shows the north american die casting association warning about this exact problem.these carburetors were sold to the public even though holley's engineering would only deviate up to .009% on lead content with a specification limit of .005%.engineering found information that indicated that up to .009% lead might not be harmful if the magnesium is within specification.unfortunately there is a correlation that shows when the lead content goes up the mg conetent goes down.
