2014 grand design 303 rls 5th wheel trailer being towed by a 2014 ram 2500 6.7l diesel truck.in august of 2015, we experienced grease streaks on the wheels of our 5th wheel while traveling.we made an appointment at the lippert service center in northern indiana, and they inspected the brakes and axle bearings stating they didn't see any problem.the 5th sat in an enclosed storage facility from september 2015 until may 2016, when we left on a trip.i had been looking for any sign of grease on the wheels during the trip, and prior to leaving we also installed a set of tire minders on the valve stems of the trailer so we could monitor tire pressure and tire temperature.on june 13th, after entering alberta canada the previous day and staying in lethbridge, alberta, we packed up and were traveling to red deer, alberta to visit a relative.about 5 miles out of clareholm, alberta (one hour), we were flagged over by a passing vehicle.after safely stopping, we discovered the front axle of the 5th wheel on the drivers side had flames shooting out.the dust cap of the wheel was missing, and as i turned onto a county road 50 feet ahead to get out of traffic, the tire, and hub assembly fell off.we had the 5th towed back to an rv dealer in lethbridge on a roll back flat bed wrecker.eldorado rv in lethbridge, alberta examined the damage andstated the the axle bearing had seized, and the axle had to be replaced.they also repacked all of the bearing on the trailed and stated that all the grease appeared to be of a light weight and runny consistency.i experience damage to the fender skirt, which was not addressed, and the repair bill amounted to $1,954,03 dollars.
