The contact owns a haldex electronic control unit (n/a).the contact stated that an abs light illuminated on the side of the trailer where the equipment was installed, which indicated that there was a failure in the electronic control unit.upon examining the electronic control unit the contact noticed that water was leaking inside of it.the electronic control unit was replaced and the failure had recurred approximately 29 times.the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact they are aware of this type of failure but there was no recall.updated 10/27/10. *lj
Haldex p/n al 430624 abs brake valves- for heavy semi-trailer applications...we have experienced a number of failures of both oem and replacement new valves. We have had a haldex representative here to inspect the failed valves; he apparently no longer works for haldex and have had no feedback from that manufacturer since (to my knowledge).the nature of the failures is very dangerous. The valves allow the parking ("maxi") brakes to release but fail to supply air to the service brake reservoirs, thus leaving the service brakes inoperative. This failure can occur at any time without warning. We have been fortunate (so far) in that our operators have discovered that they had no operable trailer brakes before they became involved in a "must stop" situation. On mostoccasions, the brakes were operational when the operators started their shift, but later in the workday, they would have virtually no brakes on their trailers. We have had several repeat failures of new valves as well. The valves are non-rebuildable (according to haldex), very expensive, prone to catastrophic failure (which, only by extraordinary good fortune, has not led to an extremely serious incident) and should be recalled and replaced by something more reliable and plumbed internally so that the maxi-brakes will not release until the service brakes have sufficient air pressure to work as designed (such as in older,non-abs systems).i am concerned and frustrated, and have taken it upon myself to contact your organization to see if something can be done before something tragic happens.the potential for disaster is incredibly high.thank you for your time and consideration.
