Garmin nuvi 260w gets very hot and skips when voice is giving directions. Almost like voice is breaking up. This garmin's serial # is not part of the recall for battery failure, but should be. I'm concerned about overheating and system failure.

I received an email that my garmin nivi 260 was being recalled because of a problem with the battery.to fix it, i need to do the following:"resolutionif you determine that your nvi is affected by this recall, you must immediately stop using the device and return it to the directed garmin-authorized service center for service. The unit's battery will be replaced with a new battery and a spacer will be inserted on top of the battery next to the pcb. The insertion of the spacer will provide a uniform enclosure space for the replacement battery. When the battery is replaced and the service concluded, your nvi will be immediately returned to you. You will not have to pay for any associated service or shipping charges.do not attempt to remove the battery yourself. Promptly discharge the battery in any recalled nvi devices to eliminate the possibility of the battery overheating. To safely discharge the battery, perform the following actions in order:1. Disconnect the nvi from all power cables and mounts. 2. Turn on the nvi. The top right corner of the nvi main menu displays the battery symbol and indicates the current battery charge level.3. Let the nvi sit until the battery is completely discharged and the nvi turns itself off. 4. Do not re-charge or continue to use a recalled nvi. After you discharge your nvi battery, follow the instructions you received from garmin for returning your nvi."according to the website, it will take 10-14 business days once they receive the garmin.besides being without my gps for a long time, i do not feel confident in the replacing of just the battery especially the fact that they will be inserting a spacer.i feel the amount of time it will take to return my garmin is too long, and think the solution is a quick fix without properly resolving the problem which should be to replace the entire garmin.

The contact owns a garmin gps, model nuvi 260w. The contact stated that she received a recall notice from the manufacturer for recall 10e039000 (equipment). The contact called the manufacturer who advised him to return the product but would not provide a return address. The product had not been replaced.updated 02/02/11
