This unit has a dometic brand refrigerator-model rm2852,serial#42500981. There is a recall on this refrigerator and dometic wants to just install a part on the boiler that will keep a fire from spreading into the camper should a fire occur. The main problem is the refrigerator can develop a crack in the boiler, which ours did, and ammonia leaks out. Dometic told us that since our refrigerator already cracked we have to replace the refrigerator at our cost and then they will install the patch. Dometic should replace the refrigerator as it is a problem that they already knew about and issued the recall. They should not just "patch" the problem, they should install a new refrigerator. We were never notified about the recall. We found out about it after our refrigerator boiler cracked and looked up the problem on-line.

We were preparing to go camping in our '04 terry quantum (bought new feb 08) and turned on frig to cool by electricity.noticed next day unit was not cooling, tried the gas, still not cooling.my husband remembered someone told him about their rv catching on fire as result of the frig catching on fire.we called dometic service center, listened to a recording which stated a recall on all '04-'06 frig's with particular model/serial numbers to look for any leaks with yellow residue on back side of the unit or not cooling properly.immediately noticed yellow residue, continued with instructions from dometic's recording stating "to turn off the gas valve" and "do not operate with gas".it stated "could use electricity".we have never received any recall notices from dometic.notified dometic recall center, told our model rm2852, serial number 40503272 was definitely on recall list and given a customer id number with "free service".dometic provided local service center.upon pick-up, documentation was provided for fix; however, upon inspection the cooling unit was not replaced and a metal shield was installed.immediately showed and discussed situation with service center, who stated the "recall" was for a "heat shield" not for replacing the cooling unit.however, our appointment was to fix the cooling unit leak.service rep looked at the frig panel and saw the residue.he would not say why their service tech did not see the residue, which was visible, and the tech should not have installed the "heat shield" with this leakage.the rep stated he would have to contact dometic to see if they would replace the unit.no reply from local service center, we contacted center and they were told by dometic that our unit is not covered under warranty and would not be covered as "free service".to date, the cooling unit is not repaired/replaced and is not operable.

I discovered a problem with my dometic rm2852 on 4/2/08 while preparing for a trip. While in transit, on 4/4, i stopped at a service department to look at the rm2852. Problem identified was a failed cooling unit (yellow residue); recall covers rm2852. B/c i was in transit, to simply take my rv to a local rv service center in my home town after i returned home from camping.through numerous phone calls and information found within the dometic recall, i now understood that:1)dometic had routinely replaced, free of charge, failed cooling units while also performing the recall. As of 4/1/08, dometic is no longer replacing them.2)the recall clearly mentions several points which matched the failure.3)several resources informed me that they've replaced many cooling units while performing the recall and that dometic covered the expenses of the cooling unit replacement.4)while on the phone with the recall center, as well as many other phone conversations with other dometic folks and rv service centers, it was very evident that dometic's choice to discontinue their 'goodwill replacement of the cooling unit' was a total surprise by all and was not expected.my last phone call was just today, 4/14/08 from dometic informing me they won't replace the cooling unit because the recall is not for the cooling unit. When i mentioned that there was obviously a defect, he commented that they understood that in some cases the heating unit may have run hot which could have caused a fatigue crack in the cooling unit. He refused to replace the cooling unit at dometic's expense.i never received a recall notice. Had this failure been identified/reported to dometic just less than days prior, that dometic would have replaced the cooling unit at no cost to me?is there any other recourse that can be taken to remedy this situation i'm in to avoid or minimize the expense to my family?i respectfully request that you engage in this situation (please).

Dometic rm2852 refrigerator, serial no. 23905278. Recall notice. 06e-076.we awoke in our travel trailer to the odor of ammonia. We searched for a cause but found nothing to relate to the odor. We 'aired' the trailer and the odor dissipated. My wife has had a persistent cough since the incident. The following morning, we discovered that the refrigerator was not cooling. Subsequently, while investigating repair options, we were advised that the cooling unit had failed, was cracked and that the ammonia contents had escaped. Additionally, we were advised that our unit was part of a recall group. I contacted the dometic company and was told by the representative that the company would not repair the cooling unit. The representative told me that a recall notice had been sent to us in 2007 and that it was sent to our physical address. Unfortunately, we never received a recall notice. My explanation was that our mail is delivered to a post office box and that when a mailing does not contain our po box number, our postal service personnel often return the mail to the sender. The representative indicated that he did not know whether the notice was returned. I believe that as important as the recall seemed, a returned notice should have been followed by a registered letter. The cost to replace the cooling unit is approximately $1000. We believe that we are entitled to financial assistance from dometic to repair the failed cooling unit.

This is rattling to our refrigerator is a 1999 forest river. The frig is a dometic rm 2852 (ser#82600213) which the manufacturer declared a recall, when i found out about it, i called to get the it done. They have refused to perform the work or get the parts. Can you do anything for me?
In may of 2005 the dometic fridge in my rv developed a coolant leak due to a crack in the cooling chamber. A local rv repair center told me it would cost $583 to have the unit replaced. I did not want to pay that amount and replaced the defective unit with an electric fridge and the rv repair center discarded the defective unit.later i was contacted by dometic by mail with a recall letter on dometic refrigerators because of a defect that caused the cooling chambers to develop a crack that causes the coolant to leak. I supplied dometic with the required information to obtain compensation for my defective unit but was denied reimbursement due to the fact that the defective unit was replaced before the august 2005 recall notification. I believe this is wrong due to the fact that me fridge was one of the defective units and failed to operate.

Dometic refrigerator recall 06e-076 customer has concerns about the recall kit and states that it doesn't work**ccthe consumer stated he just received the recall notice on june 22, 2007 and is glad there was no traveling done prior to the recall notice. The consumer stated dometic should make good with a new refrigerator because the recall kits do not prevent fires, and it is merely an aluminum shield hiding the fact that the propane gas valve is turned off. The igniter will still operate , the furnace is just below and the cook stove is next to it. If a fatigue cracked developed in the boiler tube, it could still cause a fire.

Then i went on the internet and found out about the recall on these refrigs. And how many people have had problems with them and the acs they make. The company just slaps a bandaid on the problem and when the warranty runs out they do nothing. Something needs to be done before someone is injured or ends up dead.

The complaintconcernedthedometic refrigerators for a rv refrigerator recall. Also, against camping world for their lack of timely response to fix the recalled refrigerator. Here is the email conversation with dometic. Thanks for nothing!why bother posting on your website to contact you or the national highway traffic administration if you cannot resolve this issue. The nearest dealer, other than camping world, is 90 miles away and after that, all the other dealers are out of the state of california. I don't think you or the nhtsa believe that it is reasonable for me to travel a round trip of 180 mile at $3.40 a gallon for gas on an rv that gets 8 mpg, along with the 3 + hours of commute time.i will forward this correspondence to the nhtsa.fortunately we cannot help with camping worlds scheduling. You can choose to contact another service center to set up an appointment. Our authorized service this email is to inform you that a company that committed to repairing my recalled refrigerator has not done so after five weeks.the company is "camping world" located at 24901 west pico cyn rd, valencia, ca91381. Phone # (661) 255-9220.my refrigerator serial # is 20205122 and i called 5 weeks ago and i am on a list for them to call me. I call back every week and i am told that they will not repair my refrigerator until my name comes up. They said i was number 55 on the list. Last week, the guy said the reality is that they get paid "nothing" to do recalls therefore the regular "money making" jobs come first. Today when i called they said i am now on their "first page which means another week. When i told them i have camping trips planed, they told me not to use the refrigerator until it gets repaired. I said this is not reasonable since i need to use it while camping. Their response was "go camping, don't use the refrigerator or wait for several more weeks.

I received the recall letter from dometic concerning the fatigue crack in the cooling coil of their refrigerators in march of 2007.i made an appointment with the rv dealer to install recall fix kit on may 21, 2007.on august 10, 2007 the refrigerator failed to work properly.as part of the recall fix kit installation, a new shield was installed around the boiler tube with a limiter switch attached.should boiler tube get hot because of the defect of a fatigue crack in the cooling coil, the switch will pop out and shut down the refrigerator.this is what happened in my case.the refrigerator is no longer functional due to the manufacturer's defect of the cooling coil.i have the yellow staining on the refrigerator, crack in coiling cool and leaking of ammonia.dometic has said since the kit was installed as part of the recall, there is nothing more they can do.they tell me since the refrigerator is not under warranty, replacement of the refrigerator is not an option covered by dometic.this recall notice came out when the refrigerator was already out of warranty.this fatigue cracking of the cooling coil defect has affected hundreds of thousands of refrigerators dometic has in rv applications.this fatigue cracking of the coiling coil renders the refrigerator useless.the consumer is expected to dish out thousands of dollars of their own money to remedy a manufacturer product defect.this is totally unfair since this is a documented defect by dometic which has affected almost a million refrigerators.dometic must pay to replace these defect refrigerators, not just install a band aid with the recall fix kit.i would like to have you contact dometic and find out why they have not replaced these useless refrigerators, all caused by their defective product.
The contact owns a dometic refrigerator, model rm2852.the contact noticed a yellow residue leaking from the back of the refrigerator.the dometic customer center was notified of the failure and stated that they would be responsible for the recall kit; however, the contact would be responsible for the other defect repairs.the estimated repair cost for the refrigerator was $1,050.the refrigerator has not yet been repaired.the contact was displeased to discover that the recall remedy did not address the issue sufficiently.updated 01/07/09 updated 01/07/09.

The consumer stated the kit he received will not repair any of the problems the boiler was cracked. Updated 07/15/08
I have a dometic rm 2852 refrigerator in my 2003 rv that i purchased brand new.i took the rv out of storage to put it in use and discovered that the refrig. Was not working.took it to a rv tech. And was told that it had a recall due to a ammonia leak from a crack in the cooling unit which mine does.he advised me that the recall did not fix the leak problem (crack in the cooling unit) but added some extra equipment to keep it from catching fire (bandaid fix).i believe that dometic should fix the defect in their products (1000s from what i read), not add a bandaid to work around the main safety and environmentalissue. By the way, does the epa know that there are 1000s of these refrigerators leaking ammonia into the air, and does fema know that 100s if not 1000s of the rvs that they provide for shelters may also have these safety and environmental issues?
I have a coachman wyoming with a dometic refrigerator. This refrigerator has a recall. My camper is set up as vacation home not to be moved. Dometic refused to fix my refrigerator. Dometic said i must carry it to a dealer this is almost impossible. The recall said this is a fire hazard and may put my family at risk of death. I think someone needs to explain this to the rude people at dometic. I also do not think it should be my place to get a lawyer to settle this with dometic. If this was not an important recall why is out in the first place. Please give advicethank youwade h mckinnon

Dometic rv refrigerator mod. No. Rm2852 (already under recall campaign id 06e076000) to install a heat shield, does not address the defective coil cracking, only just diverts the flame front if ammonia is released and catches fire. I have experienced a catastrophic failure of the coil releasing so much ammonia that it irritated my eyes and required venting rv to rid it of the fumes.fortunately refrigerator was in electric mode, not gas so no fire. After finding out about recall (was never informed of by dometic as required under terms of recall) and contacting dometic i was informed by their representative that under the terms of recall agreed to by them and the nhtsa they were only required to provide the heat shield free of charge, not replace the defective coils.especially if your unit is out of warranty you are out of luck to get coil replaced at no charge if it has failed because of cracked coil. It is my opinion that this recall is flawed, in so far as it has allowed dometic to cover-up a defective product without being responsible for replacement of defective part which can result in potential fire. I therefore request that the nhtsa re-open investigation into this recall and require dometic to replace defective part(s), the entire coil assembly, that will fail or have already failed creating the fire hazard, which can result in loss of entire rv due to fire and possible injury or death of the occupants.
The contact owns a 1992 hawkins aerosport with a dometic rm2852.the refrigerator was serviced under a nhtsa recall.when the generator for the vehicle was started, the breaker for the refrigerator tripped.the contact attempted to restart the generator, but the failure recurred.dometic was notified and advised him to go to another dealer, however, dometic dealers are refusing to touch the vehicle.the part number, recall number, and location in the vehicle were unknown.no vehicle information was available.

We have a 2004 forest river cardinal fifth wheel rv, model 34 lx.it has a dometic refrigerator with the model listed in highway magazine as being subject to a recall.i called the dometic 800 number on jan 25, 2007 and to date have not heard from them.we are full time rv'ers and live in our rv.could you do anything to help us find out if our refrigerator is unsafe?thank you very much.
This is rattling to our refrigerator is a 1999 forest river. The frig is a dometic rm 2852 (ser#82600213) which the manufacturer declared a recall, when i found out about it, i called to get the it done. They have refused to perform the work or get the parts. It is a danger (as they say right on there answering machine) and i don't see how they can take the risk of not repairing it. There is signs of leakage and they just don't care. Can you do anything for me?
Dometic rv refer rm2852 is on a recall to install a part to limit a fire should a component (cooling tube) should fail.in my case the component failed and the refer was inoperable but, fortunately lt did not cause a fire.contacted dometic to replace the part they knew was subject to failure and potential fire.dometic would not replace the defective part.seems they knew the part would fail and simply put a protective 'band aid' to control the fire potential.why not replace the known defective part?
Dometic had a recall on certain model refrigerators and notified us that it would be repaired at no cost. We could not move our unit so we had a repair service come out. When the repair was complete dometic only paid $40.00 and we were left with a $165.00 balance. This is contrary to info put out by office of defects investigation which i accessed on april 11, 2007 at 03:34pm. Which states dometic will install a secondary burner housing freeof charge.a complaint will also be filed with the florida attorney general consumer fraud division.
The contact owns a dometic refrigerator, model rm2852.the contact received a recall notice on the refrigerator, which stated that it could possibly catch fire.he believes that the remedy for this recall would not prevent a fire in the event that the boiler tube ignites.instead, the actual repair would only contain the fire, rather than prevent the fire.there had been no failure to date.the nhtsa campaign id number and part number were unknown.updated 10-29-08 the consumer stated the refrigerator showed signs of leakage and the refrigerator was not cooling properly. The power converter failed, the fuel pump failed and a switch on the fluid reservoir failed which caused the brake and transmission to fail. Updated 10/30/08.
