Curt 23518 black trailer hitch lock failed while driving on a highway. I lost my hitch (with no trailer) as i was driving my 2020 jeep gladiator. The lock failed and the pin came out. There were no injuries or major damage, only damage was a scratched hitch. In prior use of the locking pin, i had trouble engaging the lock. I also found the lock to disengage very easily. There is also no feedback mechanism to know whether or not the lock is engaged besides pulling on the end (no audible click or feeling). Pulling on the lock is sometimes not effective as it may be done at an angle, in which case the lock can appear locked even though it's not locked or partially locked. Issues with the lock are expressed in some of the negative reviews on amazon. Please check those for pictures of the issue. It's only a few cases but might have serious consequences for someone as an entire trailer can become loose due to the bad design. I contacted curt several times about the issue. They checked their internal database and determined there the issue won't be investigated further. This was disappointing and seems very dangerous. I contacted curt and spoke to a representative who said their systems
A curt gooseneck hitch 24,000 pound:during a on the road inspection i noticed 2 out of 4 hitch pins that hold the hitch to the trailerand to the truck - tractor worked there way 90% out.a simple hand pull removed the pins completely.i was pulling39' heavy load that all but came loose from the tow vehicle.note: none of the components were bent or broken.it is a bad design, and someone can get killed from this. *dt*dt
Curt model 63015 pintle hook rated for a 30,000 pound trailer, made by curt mfg, 6208 industrial drive, eau claire, wi 54701. This item is supposed to come with grade 8 mounting hardware.the bolts supplied by curt were indeed 1/2" sae grade 8, but the nuts were not grade 8 and were a metric spec - resulting in a loose fit that would have been dangerously weak.when my retailer contacted curt for assistance, my retailer was told to use a metric socket and everything would be fine.the out-of-spec nuts are a hazard to the motoring public.i purchased my own grade 8 hardware to avoid this danger.
I have a 2001 dodge dakota.when new, i installed a curt manufacturing tow hitch.i take great care of my vehicles.i tow only on rare occasions, probably 6-10 days a year. Recently, i noticed extreme corrosion on the side supports and main tube of the tow hitch.i have no other corrosion of this sort on my vehicle.the sides seem to be corroding in sheets (steel) as if it was a plywood. It is totally unsafe to tow anything while it is in this condition.it needs to be replaced. Curt has a lifetime warrantee. I contacted them and sent pictures.i believe it may be inferior steel or coating from factory.anyways, they denied my claim.i wanted a replacement.i have original receipt and instructions.i am concerned that others my have this, and if not addressed could lead to a catastrophic towing accident as everything towed connects only to this accessory.
