While towing the 1999 jeep cherokee behindthe 37 foot motor home on a four lane divided us highway the tow bar connecting the two broke, causing the jeep to leave the highway, cross a wide shoulder and strike a telephone pole, totaling the jeep. Fortunately no other vehicles or pedestrians were struck. The tow bar was an aladdin model bx4325 manufactured by automatic equipment manufacturingcompany. Of pender, nebraska(blue ox). The jeep was 3,300 lbs., well within the rated 5,000 lb. Rating and the jeep was towed level with the hitch receiver of the motor home. The failure was at the "hitch mount", a cast aluminum component of the tow bar itself. Automatic was notified and offered to replace the tow bar if i returned it to them. All parts in my possession now.

Consumer complaint concerning the failure of the tow truck extended legs due to excessive thrust.the consumer didn't agree with the manufacturers conclusion. The consumer stated, if overstress had occurred, the threads on the bar and the internal nut would have been striped and the spring would have been broken.

The contact owns a 2004 journeymen winnebago rv.the vehicle is equipped with a blue ox tow bar.while driving 55 mph over a dip in the road, the tow bar on the driver's side of the vehicle detached from the start of the thread.the contact did not notice any differences prior to the failure and no crash occurred.the contact mailed the tow bar back to the manufacturer and was informed that the tow bar would not be replaced because it was older than ten years.the serial number, purchase date, and part number were unknown.update 09/10/08 *cw

The contact stated that his jeep had a blue ox tow bar attached to the frontand the tow bar base plate metal fractured and separated while the contact drove. The jeep front end was damaged. The manufacturer replaced the base plate.

In 2007, we purchased a 2007 honda crv to tow, four wheels down. We purchased the blue ox aventa lx, bx7445 tow bar class iv (10,000 lb for a 2 inch receiver) and the base plate bx2246 made for the 2007 honda cr-v\, we found that the front fascia of the honda had pulled away and upon further inspection, discovered the blue ox base plate had failed. I mean, totally failed, the metal (not the bolts) had ripped, this happened on both sides, where the base plate is attached (bolted) to the frame. The base plate, was now only being held (and also our vehicle) only by the safety cables.

Failure of a blue ox bx 4325 tow bar.

I bought a kit to tow a smart car with my rv. There are 2 brackets that after installation they will be only 0.236" away from the front tires during turnings. I consider this istallation as a serious safety issue during normal driving. I didn't install this kit and contacted distribuitor and manufacturer to tell them what i found. They refused to refund even i sent them pictures and explained what the problem is. Package, description and instructions don't show if this product meets the dot or sae standards.

Aftermarket towing equipment on our diesel rv tore the frame off the jeep towed vehicle while at freeway speeds in rush hour traffic.

Dt*: the contact stated a weld failed on the locking pin, which allowed the attachment to rotate and come loose from the baseplate. The manufacturer sent replacement parts.

In may of 2006, i purchased a blue ox brake system model bx888193 sn 01091 for our 05 chevrolet malibu max to supplement braking of our motorhome. During the next few months, i experienced several problems with the unit and twice it was sent back to the manufacturer for leaking problems. During my static testing of the unit, the unit locked up and had to be released by pushing the drain button. Alarmed, i called blue ox and was told that each time i used the device, i had to "normalize" the unit which consisted of holding the "test" button and pressing the "sensitivity" button five times.at this point i should have returned the unit but i didn't and afterdoing the necessary requirements, tried to use the system on a trip to maine. Coming off a mountain in new york, i noticed the red light indicating the car brakes were on so i pulled the motor home over to find that the blue ox brake system was locked up and the car front end was smoking. After again pushing the "drain" button i was able to remove the brake system from the car. Being very upset, i called and talked to a mr denny fillipi from blue ox and he told me to have the dar repaired and to return the braking system for refund. After having the car repaired at a chevrolet dealer in maine for over eleven hundred dollars and returning the brake system to blue ox, i received a phone call from deanna from blue ox stating that they would refund me the money for the brake system but not for the repair of my car. She stated that their testing of the unit did not show any malfunction.i contend that there is something that their testing overlooks and that their brake system is dangerous. Blue ox is located in pender nebraska and the person i have been dealing with is deanna graham 800 228 9289.

The blue ox aladdin tow bar model bx4325 could fail resulting in a towed vehicle breaking loose on a highway.fortunately i detected wear on a pivot point before failure and replaced the worn part.the defect as i see it is that the tow bar is made of aluminum which does not have the strength to sustain the max 7500 lb load it is rated for.moreover the operating instructions provide no warning of this potential failure and in fact state that the pivot points require no servicing.when i brought all of this to the attention of the company they gave these excuses. They said the worn pivot may have been caused by towing a vehicle weighing more than 7500 lbs.but the tow bar can only be used with a blue ox base plate and i don't believe they even make a base plate for a vehicle that heavy. Moreover, it is highly unusual for a motorhome owner to tow such a heavy vehicle. They said the worn pivot was caused by failure to service the tow bar.but as i said their own instructions state that no service of the pivot points is required.finally they said the particular model was redesigned in 2011.was it redesigned to correct this flaw and if so why didn't they recall the defective tow bars?

We drove from lake charles la to willis tx and after 150 miles in humble tx i saw on time in the driver side mirror the towing car.i look in the rear camera and saw the towing car was in one bar disconnected.i threw on brakes slowly and we looked for our damages.one horn (attachment assembly) was outside from base plate and the pin is crooked.the two pins there we can look with the key is crooked, also.it's very hard to move the bars.the car has damages on the front, also.
