Making this report to nhtsa per cpsc.gov recommendation.quickjack bl-5000slx car lift lock failure leading to collapse with vehicle on lift.quickjack is a family of "fail safe" lock equipped hydraulic lift system solds to consumers as a safer alternative to car jack stands. I found to my shock that it can easily be placed into a false lock state that supports vehicle weight, but is prone to sudden and unpredictable collapse when "false lock" fails.i had lifted my 4,000 lexus sc430 using my quickjack and lowered it as usual into lock position. Normally, lock position rigidly jams the ends of two locking bars against stop blocks. Normal operating procedure also includes depressurizing the hydraulics after locking. The ends of those locking bars including pivoting release cams. By going up a far enough for the cams to also go past the locking blocks, going back down into lock instead jams the cams into the locking blocks. Those pivoting cams formed a "false lock" which supported my 4,000 lb car until bang! the false lock broke free. Thankfully i was not under the vehicle and the ends of the locking blocks fortuitously rammed into the stopping blocks as the lift collapsed. The forceful impact against the locking bars did not shear the locking blocks and no injury occurred.because false lock looks very similar to correct lock and is not ever mentioned as a possibility for the "fail safe" locks usage instructions, this will potentially crush a user under a vehicle. My incident was lucky. I was not under the car and the locks happened to catch during the collapse.i reported to bendpak, the manufacturer, but no actual response to this issue has been received.because this automotive lift will readily create a hazardous false lock, i reported to cpsc.gov, but they recommended reporting this issue to nhts instead.
