Multiple cracked / broken welds in pickup truck bed shell. Unit is a dcu model made by are of massillon, ohio 44648. The failure was recently noted on a 5 year old shell.mounted on a pickup truck bed.failure consists of cracked and broken welds in shell frame. The frame and skin are aluminum. These cracks if unnoticed can lead to catastrophic failure of the structure leading to loss of life from flying debris being scattered on the highway. The required repair consists of repairing the welds and repainting the shell. The manufacturer apparently has no interest in the safety hazard created, as their warranty is for 3 years and they will not accept responsibility. By any reasonable manufacturing standard, welds are not supposed to crack / break prior to failure of the metal around them.
Dt:the consumer received nhtsa recall 05026000 from american racing equipmenton april 22, 2005 regarding american racing wheels. Consumer contactedthe manufacturer three tines to get the replacement wheels.according to american racing, the federal law stated all of the defective wheels must first be returned before the replacements could be shipped.the part numbers for these wheels were 1067780 and 6067780. The consumer was given loaner wheels, and the defective wheels were at the body shop where they were purchased.
