Evenflo portabout 5 car seat, piece that holds harness straps to the back of the car seat , broke, on two carseats.*la

I am a cpst checking car seats at local safety council & found an evenflo portabout infant seat & base (purchased at local retailer 3 months ago), without any information on seat as to manufacture date or model number.both base & infant seat were without info. Dark blue base was latch equiped.cover on seat was grey/blue plaid upper half with a giraffe at about the level of the baby's head.lower part of seat cover was dark blue. Seat had 3 point harness. Please investigate as possibly others were shipped without this information.also would be interested in finding out how this type of issue is typically handled.it seems the mfg should have delt directly with the customer...not instructed the customer to return the seat to the retailer.

The infant car seat got stuck in the base and/or didn't lock into place properly.so the seat was not secured into the base.i called evenflo and since i didn't call before the warranty expired they refused to send out anything to correct the problem.i was told to use the seat by itself.shortly after the first incident our family left the country with out the seat.

Child safety seat not installing properly.i have seen as well as recievied several complaints from parents regarding the car seat.

I have a new car seat that we bought brand new and my baby is only 4mouths old and we can not use it becouse one day when we was geting her and the seat out the handle and the rerlease latch on the back of the seat brock off i have called the company they sent me a new car seat it is the same way something needs to be done about this before a child gets hart thanks lisa miller

The car seat has to short of a clip to keep it attached to a shopping cart if the car seat were to flip backwards...which does happen!!! i was going over the bumps in front of the store that are to keep people from slipping...the spot is at a downward angle with bumps and i was going slowly when all of a sudden the car seat flipped over then came disconnected and hit the asphalt! luckily i had my 2 month old still strapped in and he was not hurt. I then investigated the car seat and realized that it would do it again if the situation were to happen again...this is dangerous to anyone who uses it for shopping!! i had a similar incident with a pot hole at a store with my other car seat and it flipped over but stayed attached. This must be an over sight by the company and needs to be fixed/corrected before some child gets really hurt!the full model # is 5561586a.

Child got arm caught up between the car seat itself and the carry handle.*mrchild managed to get her arm caught between the carseat itself and the carrying handle.this occurrence has made an indentation in the child's arm.the car seat equipment is an evenflo baby elephant walk portabout 5 carseat with latch.the child is 9 months old and weights 15 lbs.consumer is also experiencing a problem where the child seat is not releasing properly from the base.*mr

Handle gotstuck and would not release properly.therefore could not use seat *tc

Please disregard my original submission, as i misidentified the seat as a graco instead of an evenflo. I am a certified child passenger safety technician and have been one for about 5 years. I recently inspected a evenflo portabout infant seat (model # 5691250 p1 / manufacturer date aug 18,2003) and discovered a potentially fatal flaw in the attachment mechanism of the carrier. The attachment point on the red carrier release handle has the tip broken off, thus preventing the seat from securely attaching to the base. I do not know if the damage was caused by misuse, abuse or a manufacturing flaw. I am currently holding onto the seat and have advised the seat owner to purchase a new seat. She was provided with a new seat to use temporarily until a replacement is obtained. Digital photos are available of the broken part for review.

Evenflo model # 5931473 n1manufactured 14 may 04there has been no accident related to this carseat's failures.the number of failure's is unknown. I am submitting a complaint regarding this carseat's failure to work properly and as advertised, so that someone else using this model will not sustain injuries if an accident occurs.after using this carseat for a short time, i assumed the car seat was locked into place upon putting into the base because there was a clicking sound and i could not lift the carseat out from the base when double-checking.however, when driving, usually turning a corner or hitting a bump, there will often be another loud clicking sound heard as the carseat does actually lock into the base.there is really no clear way to indicate that the car seat has locked into the base when installing it.i have tried pushing with all my weight to get the carseat to lock into the base, and even then it only locks half the time.only if i pull the secondary release on the base and then push the carseat further into the base will it seem to fully lock into place.the reverse is true when trying to remove the carseat from the base as the primary release usually does not work properly.i usually end up needing to use the secondary base release to remove the carseat from the base. However, because of the weight of the child and the difficulty in pulling the release (it usually takes two hands to pull it with enough force to make it release), it is sometimes necessary to take the child out of the carseat first, removethe entire carseat and base from the vehicle, turn it upside down, and then release it from underneath.i have spoken to evenflo and their response was that nothing could be done to rectify the situation as the warranty was expired and the model has been discontinued.i was advised to discontinue using the base and just use the car seat alone.

Evenflo car seat harness adjuster strap difficult to remove from base. The seat is difficult to remove from the base about 80% of the time.it seems to get caught on something in the base.it is also difficult to ensure a safe fit when placing the seat back in the base.although a clicking noise is heard the seat is still unstable (model number 587147ani/portabout 3).

Child was secured in even flo child safety.car child was traveling in was struck by another car.child safety seat detached at base, sending child and safety seat flying out of the car onto the road.safety seat is still available.

Evenflo portabout 3 infant car seat & basei think something needs to be done about this model, i have read that other people are having the same problem i am with this infant seat. When you go to latch it onto the base in the car it gets stuck and wont release and sometimes it doesn't latch onto it right , my fiance didn't know it wasn't latched on because it made the clicking noise and in fact it wasn't latched so if we were to get into an accident our daughter could be hurt or even killed form the defective problem . Also sometimes the handle on the infant seat wont go from the carry position to the car position . Had i known about all these problems i would have never bought this seat . I am going to contact evenflo and see how they can fix this matter. I can not afford to just go out and by another car seat .

I am the owner of a portabout v.model # 375124cp1, manufacture date 2003/10/11.i bought the seat new in november of 2003.i used the seat for 10 months until my son outgrew it.at the end of that time, the latch was acting up.i thought it was hard to manuever because of his weight.now i have had my next child.we have been using the same seat for 7 weeks.i have had to discontinue use of the base because it does not latch correctly and is very difficult to unlatch and take the seat off of the base.my main concern is that sometimes it appears to be latched correctly and tightly, but if you yank on it, it pops off of the base withought using the red handle latch. I called the evenflo parentlink number. I was informed that evenflo does not make this model anymore.i was told to use the seat without the base.now, left with no other option other than to secure the seat alone into my 2001 ford windstar, i attempted to do so.before i go any further, please let me tell you that i am a trained car seat technician.i took the training at driscoll children's hosptial in corpus christi, tx. I was unable to successfully secure the portabout v in in a way that was safe and comfortable for my child.you see, the seat belt buckle is encased in hard plastic (can't twist to shorten) and the belt buckles under the child's leg when it is tightened to the proper tension.the buckle is very large and this sits directly under my newborn's thigh.so, i thought i would try the latch system just to see if it would work, not knowing yet if this is recommended in terms of safety.even if it is, it won't work either because of the same problem,--large bulge under the child's bottom.i did not mistreat my car seat in anyway to cause this problem. I have also been offered the opportunity to buy a taupe colored base for the car seat directly from evenflo.i do not know if the fault lies with the base or the seat.

Car seat intermittently refusing to detach from the base.this is a safety hazard.this is not an isolated incident.i have reported this problem on a prior incident (2004) to my car seat instructor (peggy howard).she had informed me that she would contact evenflo.it appears this problem has not been corrected by the manufacturer.i have seen this same problem approximately 8 times.

The carrier does not remove from base per chp officer technician check.child seat deemed completely unsafe to use.the carrier should never not release from base.

Child seat base adjuster bends and leans to one side.mrthe only support the base adjuster offered was in the center.

Evenflo car seat base has rough and sharp edges. Seat became stuck in base and could not be released. (evenflo portabout). The writer is a technician and instructor for child passenger safety who runs several fitting stations.over the last few event she has noticed a problem with getting the seat removed from the base.

2 times the base of two different evenflo portabout carseats have not released form the seat itself.in the first case the tail of the latch strap we thought was wedged between the seat and the base.in the second case the red release lever did not work.we had to pull the black lever and it still did not release every time.we have reported this to patsy pilcher with evenflo, but are concerned that if the hooks that attach the seat to the base are bent or broken by someone jerking to get the seat off the base then the child ridining in that seat would be in great danger in the event of a crash. The car seat program at children's healthcare of atlanta gives many seats to patients. No incident that we know of has occurred, but we wanted nhtsa to be aware of this problem.vandie enloe, cpst-i.

Rear facing infant seat with based involved in a roll over crash became detached from the base during the roll over. The seat information is as follows:evenflo (portabout?) model #5581333nimanufactured 10 mar 04this number was also on the shell-2580559008/03upc n43590a040310a000 565.

Over the last few months the consumer has been unable to detach carrier from base. Through safe kids the consumer has continually purchased the evenflo portabout seat, but within the last few months the base problem has been an embarrassing problem while explaining/demonstrating the seat to parents.parents have consequently chosen not purchase the portabout because of the problem (model number 386147p1).

Evenflo portabout model # 5841265p1the seat sticks to the base.if you use the seat belt instead of latch the seat belt causes the seat to either not latch to the base or you get the seat in and then you cannot get it out.i am an instructor in child restraints.this was to worst one i have seen, but it has occured several times before.this one we had to amost disassemble to get apart.

Consumer haddifficulty removing the safety seat from the base.the seat kept getting stuck.

Evenflo portabout 5 defect:black plastic handle in the base that releases child seat from the base snapped off. The child seat is only 3 years old this month.evenflo does not have parts to fix it nor replacement bases.

Evenflo portabout seat.base and carrier system has a hard time releasing for parents. Have had one seat where it would not release from the base.possibly due to the plastic catches they use. *la

2 issues reguarding the evenflo portabout (travel system) 1)it never fit our suabru properly - was often loose and pressure/stress appeared in theplastic base from trying to secure it.it also didn't fit a pontiac, dodge dakotoa, dodge neon, or a bmw - old model all of which were not latch equipped.it has taken us up to and possiblely over 30 minutes to install the seat so it was secure enough to transport the infant.2) it required an extensive amount of effort to release the car seat from the base reguardless if latch available in the vehicle.it has taken up to five minutes to release the seat - i have even removed my child from the seat rather than fighting with the release - this would have not been acceptable in an accident when time is critical.on the date of the incident we actually broke the release handle (red plastic area) while it was in a latch equipped car and it went flying in the car.we have now discontinued use.

Mother and child were passengers in minivan.minivan was struck by another car which had run a red light.the van spun around.child was in evenflo portabout car seat, model 5751318p1.the seat was released from base during collision and seat w/ child in it was thrown from the van.

Evenflo portabout 5 car seat, piece that holds harness straps to the back of the car seat , broke, on two carseats.*la

Dt evenflo model #5581356p1,dom october 12, 2004. The consumernoticed on october 4, 2005that there weretwo metal springs on the base on the seatthat controlledhow the seat latched to the carrier in the base. One of the springs was missing and the spring was necessary in order to get the car seat to latch into the base.one could hear it click and it letknow that the car seat was latched into the base. Whenhearing theclicking sound it could make one unaware of the problem. If the car seat was upside down, and the belt path was facing away from the consumer the spring on the right side was still intact and the spring on left was missing. The consumer stated the spring could easily be dislodged from the underside of t he base. Once the spring becomes missing, the seat will not attach to the baseon that side.if only one spring is missing the seat will continue to click onto the base. Updated 12/14/05.

We purchased an evenflo port-about 5 travel system from babies r us in may 2003.our baby was born in july 2003.the complaint we have is with the plastic "chasis" of the seat.on the bottom of the seat (where the strap with buckle that goes between the child's legs is) the metal ring that is sewn to the fabric strap is held in place by two very thin plastic molded clips that are part of the seat.i just had to take the cover off for the first time since we owned this seat to wash it, and when i went to put it back on i noticed that the plastic clips that hold the metal clip in place have stress cracks on them and one does not even hold the clip in place at all.my son (now 8mo) is a very active little guy, and the seat is correctly adjusted to fit him.i am very concerned that this clip will not hold with his movement (squirming) within the seat.with very little effort i can (from the top side) pull and release the strap to the point that the strap and metal clip come through the bottom of the seat.i called the 800 number and reported this to evenflo who informedme that it was no big deal, and that if i just "pull up on it while securing my child that it won't go anywhere.personally i was not impressed with this laid back response.i could not live with myself if my son or someone elses child is injured over something that was reported and "poo-poo'd" by the manufacturer.my current plan is to try to take it back to babies r us, however i do not even know if they will do this.i do not feel my child is safe using this seat.please look into this matter, call me if you need to, i can't see using this seat the way it is....nor recommending it to anyone else.laurl kimpton.
