The contact owns a cosco touriva 5 point child restraint.the contact stated that the elastic straps would not remain strapped to the seat.the child was able to wrap the straps around his head and throat.updated 09/05/07

I found it impossible to tighten cosco touriva car seat harness while in rear facing position & nearly impossible in forward position. While forward facing, i would physically put all my weight onto harness tightening belt. This is impossible in rear facing since you must pull up. Cosco was no help. I called nhtsa for info & never received return call. I eventually threw the seat in garbage after cutting it into pieces so no one would take it out of garbage & try to use it.*nlm

I have the cosco "touriva" infant to toddler convertible seat that was given to me by "safe kids" for my daughter she is 3 years old and 26 pounds. It is model # 22-100-ttd.i have two of these seats one manufactured 04/13/05 and the other on 07/18/06 both represent a strangulation hazard for smaller kids my daughter almost strangled herself to death during a 4 hour car trip from anchorage to kenai she was able to cross both elastic straps from the seat pad over the seat under her opposite arm and around her neckfrom both sides of her carseat her seat was behind me so i was not aware of what she was doing until i heard her panic crying and pulled my car over when i did she was dusky in color and her hands were blue because she had cut off her circulation and almost her airway i have since cut the straps from the padding and i took photos on my cell phone camera so i could show local people what i am talking about. I also know another mother who has a 1 year old son who did the same thing in the same type of seat . Please put out a warning of the strangulation hazardif i had not pulled over my daughter would have died before we made it home to kenaishe was already colored by the time she cried and if i had just dismissed the crying it wouldn't have been long before the outcome could have been very different ....

I am a nhtsa cps technician. Through my work with harnett county safe kids, i purchased a car seat for my 5 mo. Old niece in april 03.after using the seat a few weeks, my sis encoutered a problem with it (touriva). The buckle, once opened, would not latch back together without her first using pliers to squeeze on the release button. Since this was the first time, i told her to continue using the seat & if it happened again, we would get a new seat. Last week (june 24, 03) before their family trip, it happened again. Michelle called cosco & they were adamant they had to have the original receipt (which i have since it was a gift to her) & that they would refund her money, send her a new buckle, & she would have to pay to ship items to them required in their proof of destruction letter. I was quite appalled they did not want the seat back to do crash & other testing on it. I had a co-worker purchase the same kind of seat from our sk, have a defect in the harness & she was sent a new seat, not just the harness & prepaid labels to ship the defective one back for testing. Since cosco had done this before, i instructed my sister to ask for the same thing. On the 3rd call placed to them they agreed to send postage paid labels so she could send the seat back & they will send her a refund for the seat.. I really like the touriva seats. The slim base design allows for installation in virtually any car seat, but i now have reservations endorsing this product with the way they have treated my sister, a customer. Do they not care/want to know if their product is as safe as they advertise? why would they rather see the seat destroyed rather than do testing to ensure the integrity of their product? i realize these are questions you will not be able to answer, but as a technician, i would want to know that any manufacturer would be delighted to assist parents in properly securing their child in a restraint, & to keep their products in good standing with the public.

I am a cps technician and mom.initially i noticed the problem while using my child's cps seat.the double buckle system on the cosco touriva can cause damage to the seat webbing.i changed to a different seat with a different buckle system.the problem is that the points on the top piece that goes into the buckle can easily get caught in the seat harness webbing in the transferring in or out of the child to/from the seat.the webbing then gets pulled and stretched.i have noticed that it has happened on other touriva's i have checked.the occurrence can be detected by stretched or misshapen areas in the harness webbing.i probably would not have detected it if it hadn't happened to my own child's seat. I can not imagine this doesn't damage the harness webbing. *nlm

Cosco touriva 02-514 fsm with manufacturing date of 7/10/01.a brand new css found to have a defective release lever- locks in place.i also have a parent bring back a defective css along with the release lever that did not lock at all.now, i have found two more with defective release levers. I originally thought that the parents had used too much force to pull the harness tight; however, we found two touriva just out of the box defective, currently filing report.*la

This failure is regarding a car seat, the cosco touriva convertible seat. The buckle that snaps at the crotch, has cracked down the middle. The parent that notified me of the damage, has had this car seat for approximately six months. Wear and tear seems to be the culprit. I run a car seat program for low-income families, so i gave the parent a replacement seat.

I purchased two costco toddler carseats within a month of one another and both of them have broken on the clip that holds the five point harness together across the childs chest.luckily this did not occur during a car accident, however my son managed to get out of the seat while i was driving when one broke.

After tightening the harness you can pull the shoulder straps loose.happens every time.

Cosco touriva convertible child safety seat 22-100-tip, 12-01-04, to1b004107, i am a cps instructor/tech, and was installing seat listed above.vehicle used did not have latch.i attached the two sides of the lower anchors clips together and tightened to keep them from being loose/dangerous in vehicle.when i went to tighten the strap, one of the clips pieces (the clip moving portion) slipped to the outside of the stationary clip part.this clips moveable part is very lightweight and i check another of the same i had on hand and the same happened. It would appear if just pulling on it with minimal force that the system would not work during an mvc.please advise
