In repositioning the safety seat from rear facing to front facing the consumer observed recline positioner mechanism popped out rendering the seat unsafe (century smart move, 44709svr, manufactured 11/20/01).*nlm *nlm
Consumer went to the police dept for a child safety seat inspection, the technician attempted to place the seat in the center rear position facing foward, the vehicle seats were leather and the rear center position was raised due to the fact that the two rear outboard positions were bucket seats, the child seat was placed in the number one reclined position due to the angle of the vehicle seat and loss of angle upon tightening the vehicle's seat belt, upon kneeling into the child safety seat to obtain a tight fit, the silver metal angle adjustment bar would pop out of its locked position on one side or the other depending upon which side of the child safety seat that the technician was kneeling on, the side that was not being kneeled on would remian in its locked position, at one point, the silver metal angle adjustment bar was on an angle which allowed it to pop out of the guide and fall to the ground, when this occured, the guide springs attached to the angle adjustment lever dangled freely, the technician had to replace the springs onto the angle adjustment bar and replace the bar back into the guide, the consumer gave the child safety seat to the technician to keep. I purchased a century smart move car seat (no. 4710bzf, mfr. Date 1/29/96).i used it for my son forward facing only.i now have a 6 month old daughter who is too large for the infant seat, so i was using it for her rear facing.i had the seat inspected yesterday by a state trooper who is certified in child car seat inspections, and he said that it was not locking into place properly, which is a well-known problem with these seats.century has never notified me of such a problem, but we both agreed that it would be dangerous for my daughter to continue using the car seat, and i had to immediately purchase a new one.i have had a couple of other problems with century's car seats (one of which i also reported on this website), and it appears fairly clear that they do not inform their customers of well-known problems with their seats.

Mahwah police dept, certified crs technician (t6630) was conducting a car seat checklist inspection and discovered that when installing the seat in a rear facing position and securing with the rear middle position lap belt, the seat moves upright when the lap belt is tightened, seat should recline at angle of 45 degrees but is nearly at 90 degrees with a tight installation, rolling spring design does not allow seat to lock in recline or semi-recline position and could be a suffocation hazard to infants, manufacturer was contacted on 8/16/00 with a similar problem (model#4720nit) and was told by customer service rep that they advise two inches of side to side motion with lap belt secured to maintain recline, however this is in direct contrast to crs certification that requires less than one inch of side to side movement for a proper installation.(model#44709svr)

The harness tie that holds the shoulder straps in place broke while being unbuckled. It seems it weakened with age (car seat is three years old and being used for a second child). I am very glad this didn't happen during a car crash. They sent a replacemnt part made of a different type of plastic, which seems much more durable.

Whilemaking a full stop, and waiting to turn from the highway, the vehicle was struck from the rear by another vehicle that was traveling at highway speed. The 4-month old child was seating in the rear in a car seat. Upon impact the car seat unfastned, child was ejected from vehicle and died from the injuries.

Century model # 45600jti, dom06-19-2000; consumer was driving at approximately 70 mph, lost control of vehicle and ran down an enbankment, hit concrete post with the rear, and nosedived into the ground. At stop, consumerturned around to check 17- month old child, and noticed arm of overhead shield had popped out of buckle and rose up half way . Child was totally unrestraint, and hit face against the arm, causing bruises. It looked like shield unsnapped towards the end of accident because child was still in seat, but totally unrestraint.

I was just driving down the road, and my one son pointed out that my other son's car seat was broken. The safety belt still buckles, but the shield is loose and doesn't seem safe. Is inherent problem in shield design since shield does not contact lower body of smaller children, effectivelyrendering it a "one point" or at most a "three point" harness. Crotch buckle ends up bent, indicating the loading forces are taking the weight of the child under the shield. As child goes under, shoulder straps provide no protection.

Problem:my son (2 yrs of age) is opening the one piece harness tie (chest clip) manually during our road trips and is sliding out of the 5 point harness to free himself from the seat.note:i explained the safety issues to him, but i must remind you that a two year old's thought process is not like that of an adult.a two year old child should not have the ability of removing himself from a car seat under any circumstances.i watched in horror one day in the rear view mirror to see him standing in his car seat while i traveled down the freeway.the car seat in question is a century-graco 1000 ste (model #44161blc 20010501).the seat was purchased in 2001 at babyrus in san antonio texas.i contacted century products directly to advise them of the problem.i then ordered a replacement unit, the 2 pc harness tie (chest clip).this device has two individual pieces that clip together and is very difficult for a child to open.the one piece unit bends very easily, allowing the child to weave the seat belt harness through the clip and free himself from the seat. I recommend century replace (free of charge) all one pc harness ties with the two pc harness tie unit for the safety of all children. I believe that the cost of the replacement ($8 inclucing s&h) is far less than the cost of loss of life.thank you for your time and attention with this matter. The century rep had no comments for me other than purchasing the item.i was not expecting an appology or an admission of wrongdoing, but i was expecting some form of human concern.thank you for your time and attention.

Shoulder harness can not be adjusted properly.it simply isn't designed to allow it to fit properly.the century anate shoulder straps have six positions, and cannot be adjusted more precisely for a proper fit.the officer at our local public safety office who conducts the free carseat safety inspections was shocked and dismayed by the design.she even called the manufacturer to confirm.century just doesn't see it as a problem, but the seat can not be made to fit snugly and safely.

The child removed the tie tabs and consumer is concerned that other children may do the same thing, consumer states the only reason the tie tabs are being replaced is because she called regarding the problem, there is nothing in the owners manual that states the tie tabs wear and need replacement periodically, seat was purchased new.
